re: #94 Rightwingconspirator

So after the first of the year, my old wireless mouse quit. I really got tired of the wireless limitations and bought a “gamer” mouse from Razer. LOL “DeathAdder” is a pretty over-the-top model name but whatever. Already the trackwheel is acting up. Stiff and it’s noisy.

Yes, folks, I have a mouse that squeaks.

If it starts to roar, I’d worry

Martin Luther: James is the Epistle of Straw. It does not contain the purity of the Gospel the other books of the New Testament contain.

This is why so many Protestant churches ignore the edict “Faith without works is dead.”

re: #8 Patricia Kayden

What the actual hell?!

Evangelical adoption schemes have a habit of veering into “well, you went and did a child trafficking” on the regular.

The core idea is “get kids to the right kinds of people” where “right kind” is a thin layer of ritual…and cash on hand…this tends to result in things like: not checking the kids don’t still have parents; grabbing kids in disrupted regions opportunistically; handing kids over to very dangerous people; covering up adoptions that don’t work because more material forms of child welfare are less important than spiritual welfare.

And, yes, this is another thing where QAnon imagines buying and selling kids must involve a D&D campaign setting’s worth of baroque conspiracy but is, in fact, happening entirely in the open.

The splinters of Indian schools and Catholic orphanages are shot through modern Western civilization, secular and sacred.

The intersection of “your body is not your own because you are a child” and “your body is not your own because you are ward of a superior race” and “your body is not your own because it belongs to God, who delegates his entitlements to his obudsman Steve” tends to provoke deep discomfort and denial, beyond regular denial of mass crime,

Everybody wants to claim that they live in a civilization where, at minimum, nobody does things to kids unless they’re some kind of Grendel-like outlying monster.

Everybody wants to claim that they live in a civilization where, at minimum, nobody does things to kids unless they’re some kind of Grendel-like outlying monster.

“Your body is not your own” comes from 1 Cor. 6:19. A few verses later, in 1 Cor 7:4 wives are told they do not have authority over their own bodies. Paul also says the same thing to husbands, but that’s often ignored. Then Paul says that neither should withhold sex except to engage in prayer. I’m going to be utterly blunt here and say that this not just ignores the whole notion of consent, but stomps the hell out of it. And given the patriarchal nature of most of Evangelicalism (and other Christian faiths), wives are told to give it up to their husbands whenever and wherever the husband wants it. Mark Driscoll told wives to basically let husbands perform anal when she’s on her period. Of course, this goes along with the idea that men are so horny that women have to dress so that they don’t tempt men, but have to remain sexy enough so that their husbands don’t stray.

So yeah, just basically stampeding over the rights of children separated from their biological parents during wartime is right in keeping with that.

The chiral twin of this is the anti-trans legislation being pushed through. A child’s body is their parents’ until the parent(s) make choices that affirm the child rather than the hegemonic cultural force that wants that kid’s body to serve their purposes.

This might be justified with some version of “your body belongs to God” but in his absence there are many men, at varying levels of prurient, who will tell everyone what their body is for.

My running thesis is that anti-cancel culture rhetoric is primarily powered by people who faced shaming on social media, and wish to take that absolutely-minimal form of accountability and conflate into some kind witch hunt precisely because it covers more elaborate bad behavior…

…while at the same time being kinds of okay with witch hunts that have the right cultural credentials.

All of this happens independent of the actual moral panics and internet mob behavior, because “anti-cancel culture” is always hierarchical…the right kinds of people should not be mocked or criticized.

Hertling is exactly right.

Case in point:

1) Let’s give the Ukes old US jets!

Response: Many of the US jets in the boneyard in Tucson *could* be regenerated, but it would take weeks. Plus, even after getting them into flying condition, the instruments are in English, not Cyrillic, none of the instruments read in Metric, none of the Ukes wrenches would work because all their tools are in metric, etc.

Try flying combat when you are mentally trying to convert speed from KPH to MPH, altitude from Meters to Feet, and fuel usage from Liters to Gallons/minute.

And maintenance support personal working on airplanes they have never seen before?

Impossible.

Targetpractice  Mar 17, 2022 • 9:55:26pm

Good answer thread over at Quora on the question of reactivating aircraft from the Boneyard, but the short answer is that most of the aircraft there are spare parts.

The aircraft that would take the shortest time to reactivate are ones that are still in active service but are in temporary storage in order to save hours on the airframes and allow for extensive maintenance/upgrades that otherwise would have to be squeezed in during deployment.

The aircraft that are in there on long-term storage would take months due to the level of preservation done to them and would need extensive upgrades because most of them are way outdated.

Anything past that level is gonna get stripped for parts before either being scrapped or sold off to a foreign military “as-is.”

The answer is to keep providing spares, ammo, and missiles (at & aa) as well as however many volunteers wish to go. But if he sticks his nose into any NATO country (or Finland if they have started the process to join) the Article 5 hammer has to come down hard and the VVS ceases to exist and those stalled columns learn what the Highway of Death was like.

Best solution at this time is to keep the Ukrainians fed, armed, and informed. I get that we feel a moral obligation to stop the images we’re seeing on the news and feel that we’re somehow failing if we don’t bring it to an end, but the overall picture is of a country that is holding its own and bleeding its enemy white. Those Russian conscripts are conflicted with fighting and killing Ukrainians, but they will feel no such conflict with killing Americans, Brits, Germans, Czechs, etc.

Agree. I should have included “if we want to provide air support.”

I think the big issue we face is that we’re not dealing with the WWII-era Lend-Lease idea of aircraft being so similar that you could just ship over some new stock (or, in the case of the Brits, war-weary hand-me-downs) to other nations, hand them a few maintenance manuals, and give the pilots a few hours familiarization training. The West and East went along two different evolutionary paths during the Cold War and so training pilots from one side to fly aircraft from the other is a complicated process. Far easier to just provide them with 1-to-1 replacements because you skip all the retraining business.

Yesterday a major paper (SF Chronicle) finally said what I have been saying for over a year:

twitter.com

One impact of the pandemic appears to be far more metropolitan areas where the real estate market looks increasingly like San Francisco’s.

According to a Chronicle data analysis, there are at least 10 metro areas that could soon become “the next San Francisco” in terms of housing affordability and availability, including San Diego, Raleigh, N.C., and two areas in Montana.

Important to realize too that San Diego County is far larger than San Francisco (the city fills its small County.)

So there are many more residences here.

And yet the prices went crazy shortly after the pandemic started. The prices were already under pressure before the pandemic, but the pandemic collapsed the availability to almost nothing so people with money have been bidding up what becomes available.

Example: February data on real estate sales for San Diego County:

Single family residences:
Median price up 18.1% YoY.
Average price up 21.4% YoY.

This has been going on now for over two years, each month.

Average sales price in Feb was $1,262,360.

Compare the slope of the line before the pandemic to after the pandemic:

The Median price is a bit less than the Average price, of course. But also remember that is for the whole County, the 5th largest in the US, and that houses inland will sell for less than those within about 5 miles from the ocean.

I checked Zillow last week and noticed that a new construction in the part of San Diego city that is out on the peninsula (for those familiar with the city, this property was in the middle of the peninsula, not an ocean-front or bay-front property) ask was $3.9M . It was just a normal size house on a small lot (a lot that was from an older one divided in two, clearly, by the developer not long ago.) The County tax collector valued the lot for under $700k, which means the new building is being priced at $3.2M. This for a narrow house of about 2.5k square feet.

The prices are a direct result of this:

Note that while Trump was pushing denial of Covid, the real estate market knew exactly what was going on, and once a whiff of a major event was happening the real estate folk pulled houses off the market pronto.

How this real estate price bubble will work out is beyond me.

I do not think our economy can allow prices to go on like this.

But at the same time the forces (read: mortgage holders) cannot allow prices to collapse back 40% to the prices before the pandemic. This is because too many house owners would go upside down, deeply so.

re: #110 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

This may be a classic housing “bubble”. This time the bubble is fueled by a sudden lack of supply:

What Is a Housing Bubble?

A housing bubble, or real estate bubble, is a run-up in housing prices fueled by demand, speculation, and exuberant spending to the point of collapse. Housing bubbles usually start with an increase in demand, in the face of limited supply, which takes a relatively extended period to replenish and increase. Speculators pour money into the market, further driving up demand. At some point, demand decreases or stagnates at the same time supply increases, resulting in a sharp drop in prices—and the bubble bursts.

Because homeowners stopped selling in the pandemic, the demand outpaced supply. As prices skyrocketed existing homeowners were less likely to sell because they don’t want to miss out on the next 18% gains.

The end of low rates may counter that.

Mortgage rates have risen above 4% for the first time since May 2019.

The 30-year fixed-rate home loan averaged 4.16% in the week ending on Thursday, up from 3.85% the previous week, according to Freddie Mac.

A year ago, the long-term rate was 3.05%.

The data was released just a day after the Federal Reserve boosted interest rates by a quarter of a percentage point in an effort to tame rapidly rising inflation.

The decision marks a reversal of the stimulus policy adopted by the central bank to prop up the economy when it was hampered by the coronavirus pandemic.

Mortgage rates rise and fall independently of the federal funds rate. Instead, they correspond to the yield on 10-year Treasury bonds.

re: #116 Ming5000

The problem is, people still need a place to live.

While price changes over the past few years on a graph look like a “bubble”, in practice the buyers of housing have been more than willing to pay the price.

Because the people buying are those who have money.

The others - normal people - do not have the money.

So this is not a broad-based bubble, but one that reflects the distribution of wealth in society.

IOW, the wealthy are starting to hoard the land, even more so than before.

What is going on is land-banking on a grand scale.

Both wealthy individuals and real estate companies are picking up whatever they can.

For some companies the problem is now they’ve overreached. See what happened to Zillow recently.

Maybe.

Or maybe not.

For here in San Diego County, and this will be true of other major urban hot markets, many mortgages where the owners needs to borrow a decent share of the price are mortgages in the “jumbo” category.

Big mortgages are awkward. The bigger they are the farther they are from government guarantees.

I think all of this spells disaster for anyone other than those who have held real estate since 2008 and decided to sell in the last few months. Those folk are raking in the money.

Shropshire Slasher  Mar 18, 2022 • 5:15:43am

Blue icing works the same way. Eat two days before St. Patricks day for the full effect.

If you ever wanted an excuse to bake a bunch of muffins, you’re in luck… just make sure they’re blue.

Experts believe eating the specially-coloured treats may provide a warning sign of poor gut health.

If the coloured muffin passes through your system too quickly, it could potentially indicate inflammatory bowel disease.

Or it could be a warning sign that you’re at risk of type 2 diabetes, if it takes your body takes longer than 60 hours to digest it.

Studies show that 20 hours between eating and expelling a meal is the ‘sweet-spot’ for gut health.

But the time it takes for your body to digest food can vary from between as little as a couple of hours to three entire days.

Dr Sarah Berry, a nutritionist at King’s College London who helped design the muffin test, says the ‘blue poo challenge’ can give medics an ‘early warning’ sign something is not right.

In the 90’s, I lived in Langen, home to Michael Kühnen, one of Germany’s leading gay Neo-Nazis:

Michael Kühnen (21 June 1955 - 25 April 1991) was a leader in the German neo-Nazi movement. He was one of the first post-World War II Germans to openly embrace Nazism and call for the formation of a Fourth Reich. He enacted a policy of setting up several differently named groups in an effort to confuse German authorities, who were attempting to shut down neo-Nazi groups. Kühnen’s homosexuality was made public in 1986, and he died of HIV-related complications in 1991.

Indiscriminate firing that will lead to still more civilian casualties. It also seems to suggest lack of training, lack of air superiority over Ukrainian airspace, and inability to conduct proper attacks against military targets because Ukrainians are well defended, have the means to shoot these aircraft down, etc.

It’s almost equivalent to say a US military unit in Vietnam cataloging a mission into the jungle where they claimed success based on how many rounds of ammo fired, and guestimating how many VC were killed.

We fired 40 zunis, 2000 rounds of 50 cal, at suspected enemy locations, and we estimate we killed 20 enemy troops.

Reality: we fired weapons indiscriminately, have no idea what we hit, or if civilians were caught in the fire, and returned to base thinking ourselves successful.

re: #162 No Malarkey!

India, which has remained neutral toward the war, gets cheap oil, and Russia gets badly needed hard currency. Of course Europe is also still buying oil and gas from Russia.

[Embedded content]

One of the smarter randos I see on disqus/politicalwire.com

Also, one of the things that is happening is that Russia is now seeking to sell their oil at bargain prices to make up for the loss of key western exports.

For example, India has just agreed to import an additional 15 million barrels of Russian oil at below global market rates. They’ve indicated they plan to take advantage of the price cuts to buy more Russian oil going forward.

Additionally, Russia is trying to cut a similar deal with China.

The impact of that on global prices may be interesting - right now India gets their oil from Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the US. China is dependent on the Saudis and UAE as well.

If clearance price Russian oil sales to India and China ends up supplanting the supply from the more traditional Middle Eastern suppliers, suddenly those countries will be seeking to sell additional oil on the global market.

There is a reason that the global price of a barrel of oil was approaching $130 almost 2 weeks ago, but has now come back down to c $100. Iranian (and Venezuelan) supply entering the market would probably keep downward pressure on world prices.

The “news” media should get out of the editorial business altogether. They suck at it and it only gets them in trouble. Twitter, podcasts, blogs and substack replaced any need for that.

Not going to cancel my subscription, their actual news reporting is really good.

It is worth noting here the important distinction between what the First Amendment protects — freedom from government restrictions on expression — and the popular conception of free speech — the affirmative right to speak your mind in public, on which the law is silent.

What part of “Congress shall make no law…” do you not understand?

There have always been consequences for “free” speech, just think of McCarthyism and blacklisting , the Scopes trial of the 20’s and Lady Chatterly’s Lover on trial…

Americans are upset because they cannot have consequence-free speech.

Specifically, white Americans are upset because speech that used to be consequence-free now has consequences. It used to be okay to drop the N-word, or to call gay people “faggots”, or any number of other racial, ethnic, or gender slurs. It’s not okay anymore (and never should have been, but that’s neither here nor there), and people who still hold those feelings are mad that they can’t let them out in public without consequences anymore.

Also, the entire culture and infrastructure of discourse has changed: where one’s opinions might not make it beyond the circle of friends at the bar or the bowling team/locker room, etc., now there is an opportunity to broadcast them across the world instantaneously, while cameras and recorders erase the distinction between the public and private sphere.

I have a lot of jokes that I only tell to people who understand my sense of humor and where it is coming from, and fully understand how some people could find them offensive if they were to hear them outside of that context.

That’s what I grew up with - 1943 Springfield .30-06 - dad had a patient who was an old gunsmith and the guy took me out to his shop, asked me to pick an old Model-T axle, and machined me a new barrel for it. Lyman peep sights - didn’t want a scope as I hunted in brush anyway. Great deer rifle.

Should have seen that guy’s house. Freakin’ museum. 50 years of guns he made lining the walls from floor to ceiling. Everything from a rifle he built to go after Elephants in the 50s (gorgeous, small, but large caliber - says he bruised his shoulder with it) to a 4 barrel 16 gauge shotgun he welded together in his teens for poaching ducks - all four barrels fired at once.

India is going to buy Russian oil at a “discount”. WP had no detail on the discount.

I had the thought a while ago that Russia was going to have to sell oil at a discount to some countries who need to or are not on team UA, which sucks for Russia.
And, if India gets cheaper oil from RU they won’t be buying as much of all the rest of the world’s oil, which doesn’t suck for India or us.

I am no mathematician so I am sure I will be given the correct answer.

I think all of this spells disaster for anyone other than those who have held real estate since 2008 and decided to sell in the last few months. Those folk are raking in the money.

I live in a townhome community and have been here since 2007. So yeah, I bought at the height of the last bubble. It’s only been within the last 18 months that housing prices first caught up with my mortgage on the townhome and has then zoomed up to 3.5 times the current balance on my mortgage. My mother’s house (paid for) has nearly doubled in the same period. It’s insane. People can’t afford to buy homes, but they’re being bought up by speculators. I don’t know if this means a crash for these people or continued penury for families who are just trying to make ends meet.

Mosin Nagant rifles. Fine shooting irons. Equivalent to our 1903 Springfields.

Five round internal mag, 7.62 x 54mm cartridge. It’s my deer gun and I paid $100 for it. Accurate to 500 yds over iron sights.

A far better rifle than too many give it credit for. The Finns took them by the thousands from the Russian, mod-ed them only slightly and used them to kick Soviet butt. I had one but sold it to finance my Kraig-Jorgensen carbine, which is my deer rifle.

It is a fine weapon; the M1 Garand outclassed it not because of its superior shooting qualities, but because it altered the name of the warfare game. A rapid-fire semiautomatic rifle in the hands of competently trained soldiers gave a US platoon the firepower equivalent to a European battalion.

The family of Halyna Hutchins, the late cinematographer who was killed on the Alec Baldwin movie Rust last year, is currently trapped in Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion, her husband says.

Halyna Hutchins’ widower, Matt, told TMZ on Friday the late cinematographer’s family members have been trapped in Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the wake of Russia’s invasion of the country. “Halyna’s mother knows she cannot leave safely and is instead continuing to work in the same hospital where she’s been a nurse for more than a decade, and Halyna’s father is hunkering down too,” the report says.

Yep, then Kalashnikov took the concept of a submachine gun and lots of ideas from the Garand and the M-1 carbine to make the Avtomat Kalashnikov giving a single soldier the firepower of an American platoon.

She thought she was being cool and cutting edge, but people really hate the NFT grift.

Brie Larson has attracted fresh criticism from Marvel fans for promoting NFTs.

The Captain Marvel actor recently faced a backlash for revealing on social media that she had bought her own non-fungible token from the “Flower Girls” collection.

Designed by Varvara Alay, the collection in question reportedly donates a portion of all their sales to “a range of children’s charities”.

Now, Larson has posted a tweet of an NFT, writing: “Welcome to my lil corner of the @some_place metaverse. Can’t wait to welcome you all in soon.”

Her fans expressed their disappointment with Larson’s post on social media.

I think the boiler room in my elementary school (Mary A. Wilson - good old Mary A) had a fallout shelter sign on the door. I guess they were planning on herding us all in there? I don’t remember any talk of nuclear war when I was a kid. My younger brother (10 years younger) was in school in the 1980s and was anxious about the bomb. Was duck and cover more prevalent in the 80s than the 70s?

The Silent Generation is the demographic cohort following the Greatest Generation and preceding the Baby Boomers. The Silent Generation is generally defined as people born from 1928 to 1945.[1] By this definition and U.S. Census data, there were 23 million Silents in the United States as of 2019.[2]

The polls throughout our country’s history should have been more to the point:

“do you feel comfortable in today’s society hurling racist insults, sexist cat-calls, gay bashing and calling to oppress or remove minorities from the country?”

That is the “speaking their mind” they worry about.

I have personally felt the definition for Boomer birth years is way too broad. Some marketing folks have felt so too, claiming that there are really two co-horts comprising the Boomers - the Early Boomers and Generation Jones.

The Generation Jones folks didn’t grow up with Howdy Dowdy, too young for Woodstock, heard MLK’s “I Have A Dream” years after spoken, and only a few barely old enough to understand what was going on with the JFK assassination.

We had duck and cover when I was kid. Of course, my dad was in the military and so we always lived near or in air force bases, which were potential targets.

I have this hanging in my man cave. These were ubiquitous when I was a kid.

Scariest memory of that time was when we were living in Germany at the edge of the 5K zone. We could see the fences at the border with East Germany in the distance and occasionally see it get lit up at night along with hearing explosions and gunfire when a crossing was attempted.

Kennedy was assassinated while we were there and we knew if a war started we were on the front line. A scary time.

I’m 1956, I agree with dividing the Boom into two cohorts — the description seems reasonable, and I’ve seen plenty of references to Early and Late Boomers. But ‘Generation Jones’? Where on earth did they come up with that weird designation, and wottheck is it supposed to mean? Has anyone else heard it before?
