re: #97 dat_said

- my wife and our youngest daughter hauled a Canada goose to the local nature wildlife rehab center this morning. It was alive, could barely stand and move its wings when we found it this morning behind the garage by the pond. I suspected avian flu and wife and daughter took precautions before taking it to the center. The people there met them outside as they didn’t want to contaminate the facility. They agreed with my layman’s diagnosis and were glad they brought it in - they were concerned that the hawks and bald eagles in the area would eat and catch/spread the flu. I’m worried we’ll be hauling some more there in the next week. I guess another good reason to have face masks around.

Looks like about 40 Canada geese out on the pond right now along with a dozen mallards and 8 hooded mergansers but migration is starting and the pond will likely completely ice out tomorrow. So, there will be a lot more soon. Not a big pond, only about 25 acres and 2 to 5 feet deep, but it can hold a surprising amount of wildlife during migration (and throughout the year).

Just like they’re brainwashing their kids in Sunday school every weekend.

Pastor complains people are leaving his church — woman stands up and says, ‘It’s because you keep touching them, you nasty perv’ (Deadstate)

When complaints first surfaced against the pastor over a year ago, the church board covered it up. Now the FBI is involved in investigating the church.

re: #100 EPR-radar

This is the most significant kind of indoctrination of children (by the numbers), and it’s considered very rude to describe it in those terms.

No propagandist wants their propaganda questioned.

It works too, as Pew Research continues to show atheists are less trusted by Americans than paedophiles and rapists.

re: #96 Florida Panhandler

It took decades for me to near-100% deprogram myself from my own Sunday School cult I grew up in. And this was after telling my parents at age 14 or so that I was an atheist.

My entire family other than my mother disowned me when I was outed in the 2018 election.

Missing hiker’s body found 2-plus weeks later with dog by his side

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A hiker who went missing more than two weeks ago was found dead in Griffith Park with his dog by his side, authorities said.

Oscar Alejandro Hernandez, 29, was reported missing on March 16. His body was found Thursday night in a remote area of the sprawling urban park. His dog, King, was alive but emaciated.

He apparently hadn’t left Hernandez’s side for two weeks, a relative told KNBC-TV. The family was there when the body was found, said Sgt. Ruben Arellano, a watch commander at the station in charge of Griffith Park.

Griffith Park is a little spooky sometimes, and it would be spookier if I were at all superstitious. In 1933, it was the site of a catastrophic brush fire that killed 29 mostly amateur firefighters. Otoh, Griffith Observatory is one of my favorite places in the world and especially was when I was a kid. Dr. Edwin Krupp has been Director there since 1974 (not a typo, NINETEEN SEVENTY-FOUR). Dr. Ed is now 77 years of age and may retire soon. Or he may not.

Watched the video. Loved it. Sort of a take on H. Beam Piper’s Paratime series.

I think Lance Reddick will become the next James Earl Jones. With that distinctive voice and great acting skills he could easily fill those shoes.

Though I’d say that it’s not a unique thing for Russian nationalism to have close ties to a theocratic element and a huge belief in being unique or God-favored as a nation. In fact, I’d say that it’s a pretty common element to nationalism in general. And the authoritarians love it since it’s a very convenient justification for all sorts of actions.

mmmirele  Apr 2, 2022 • 6:07:27pm

This came bouncing across my timeline and I had to look up the word “rort”—which is Aussie slang for “a fraudulent or dishonest act or practice.” To wit:

Mormons Inc: Church accused of multinational tax rort
The Mormon Church has been accused of engaging in significant tax evasion in Australia, allowing its adherents to collect hundreds of millions of dollars in tax exemptions that are not lawfully available to followers of other religions.

Some of its tax activities are run through a shell company, with no paid employees, that could be in breach of Australian tax laws, an investigation by The Sunday Age and The Sun-Herald has found.

smh.com.au

There’s a LOT to the article, and I know next to nothing about Australian tax law. But what it looks like is that the Mormon Church is using it’s Aussie income (fungible, moveable) on charity by basically shuffling it off to the United States as a huge chunk of its worldwide yearly giving. Apparently this gives Australian members some tax benefits. However, a 2019 Australian tax law ruling says that charity given to a “deductible gift recipient” must have Australia as “the focal point of the DGR in a legal or organisational sense”. The organization in Australia the money is being funneled through has no employees.

Australia has some very tight tax and charity laws compared to the USA, and after the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (mid ’10s, but fallout is still occurring, with the recently resigned/pushed out Hillsong pastor Brian Houston facing charges of not reporting his father based on his Royal Commission testimony), there’s somewhat less willingness to let religious organizations get a pass.

Cynical me suggests that the Utah church will spin up an office in Sydney with a couple or three people getting a paycheck for basically acting as a front. But as I am NOT an expert on Aussie tax law, it’s possible that in the weeds there’s some weirdness going on.

That’s fair for sure. The letters aren’t getting leaked to him, but to Vladimir Osechkin, who is a well known Russian human rights activist in exile. Igor just translates them. I used to put a list of disclaimers about it possibly being disinfo or pure fiction before linking. That’s still to be assumed. Still, it reads like it could be true; at least the early letters.

Mormons Inc: Church accused of multinational tax rort (Brisbane Times)

Rort, Australian slang for a fraudulent or dishonest act or practice.

TL;DR, the Mormon Church allegedly set up a shell company to take out donations to Utah.

Georgia Pastor Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud after Buying Mercedes with Fraudulent Pandemic Disaster Loan (Ministry Watch)

A South Georgia pastor will forfeit the Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan he bought with nearly $150,000 in fraudulent pandemic business disaster loans in accordance with a plea agreement after pleading guilty to two counts of wire fraud.

Mack Devon Knight, 45, of Kingsland, Georgia, pleaded guilty to the charges March 25, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia said. Knight admitted sending fictitious documents to the U.S. Small Business Administration, including a fake tax document and an altered bank record.

He will serve up to 20 years in prison and face financial penalties and restitution as well as three years of supervised release after completion of any prison sentence.

Almost no one performs gender-changing surgery under the age of eighteen.

This is part of the conservative culture war, implying parents are forcing children to undergo sex changes, and attacking puberty blocker drugs (which are entirely reversible).

Rep. Bobert is arguing that no one should be allowed to express their gender or sexual attraction prior to age eighteen.

Hence, my snarky response that a boy can’t declare he likes girls.

Yeah, I don’t know what to think, personally. I’ve spent my career bobbling around in national bureaucracies and have a fairly decent understanding of the Russian government, and what he’s saying sounds plausible to me, especially with the explanations of bureaucratic complications and knock-on effects that wouldn’t occur to an outsider. But still, it has all the 2017 American “rogue staffer” sort of energy going on. I’ll read it, but won’t count on it.

The United Methodist Church just circulated a letter amongst its bishops saying they should consider not renewing their charters with the BSA, because in the BSA’s bankruptcy filing, the BSA lied to charter holders (saying they would be explicitly held as not liable). The settlement did not include that.

As such, the UMC suggests they either eject Boy Scout troops, or convert charters to facility use contracts.

Russian Troops Dead After Getting ‘Treated’ to Poisoned Meals, Ukraine Officials Say (Daily Beast)

In a show of hospitality, Ukrainian citizens in the besieged region of Kharkiv have reportedly been “treating” Russian troops to local delicacies—laced with poison.

At least two troops from the 3rd Motor Rifle Division of the Russian Federation died immediately after eating stuffed buns served by the residents of Izium, a town about 80 miles southeast of Kharkiv, the Main Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine wrote Saturday in an announcement posted to Facebook.

Another 28 Russians are being treated in intensive care from eating the contaminated treats. The condition of these poisoned invaders has yet to be confirmed.

According to the Intelligence Directorate, several hundred Russian soldiers have also suffered severe illnesses from drinking poisoned alcohol while occupying the region. Ukrainian officials said that the Russian military is “writing off these cases as so-called ‘non-combat losses.’”

Because most Europeans, not just Ukranians, have vivid memories of war happening on their block. The before, during and after — they know experientially how to prepare, how to endure, how to rebuild. We’ve never been occupied. We haven’t had air raids. We’ve never had any real worry about being invaded. No artillery battles downtown. The only people who might shoot at us is our down the block neighbors, or that guy from the third shift at work, or some asshole who cut you off on the freeway.

For Americans, war means our soldiers go someplace really far away, the rest of us read about it or look at pictures. Our civilians, our homes, are in no danger. And when it’s over, 97% of our troops come home alive. There’s not a single square inch of Europe that wouldn’t be happy to trade for that experience.

This is one reason I hold the USA isolationists in a large degree of disdain.* A lot of US foreign war policy has been pretty much to go and fight on someone else’s land rather than waiting for it to arrive on our shores. With the above experience you mention thus being avoided.

And the last widespread war fought in our settled territory was done in the mid-19th century when the war devastation was quite a bit less relative to what can be inflicted with the 20th century and beyond tech. (And there is still a lot of caterwauling about that 19th century damage in certain circles. Generally tied into the Lost Cause faction as well.)

* - Disdain is about as worked up as I can get about these people. Hate is much too expensive of an emotion to carry around.

Yes, I don’t think that its a recommendation that you immediately rush out and get your second booster, though I did personally. I probably could’ve waited because Omicron just finished burning through Kentucky, but my personal inclination is to get every covid shot I can ASAP. It certainly may be a better strategy to space them out more to try to maximize your immunity when surges do occur.

And as long as Putin doesn’t declare actual ‘war’ conscripts can’t be forced to go back to the front after their year is up. So 100,000 of them are at or near end of contract and the 135,000 he’s drafting aren’t ready for battle yet.

Well. They will have a choice. Go back to the front or we send you and your family to Siberia.

I give it just a few months before we start seeing photo/video of the concentration camps they’ve set up for Ukrainian prisoners.

And a high school girl can’t decide she wants to marry the guy at the bowling alley that is showing her and her friends his junk.

Art Tatum! Every time I listen to something like this, from him, I am in sheer awe. How can any one human, with only one brain, two hands, and ten fingers, do that? It’s unpossible. Loved the Rhapsody in Blue reference near the end.

And he was blind!

Went to Michigan today. Got my 4th shot. Bank closed. AT&T closed. Meijer out of the good tamales (did curbside). Got lost in the middle of fucking nowhere (thank you GPS for the rescue).

All the time I was there, the only person who wore a mask was the guy who jabbed me and only when he was near me (maskless behind the pharmacy). Not one mask in any parking lot. Not one mask on anyone going into or coming out of any store.

It’s fucking depressing.

I understand how you feel. I went to my local supermarket this morning. While I was waiting to get in there were two other men waiting. They did not have masks on whereas I did. And it was also 7:05 and the store should have been open. I called the supermarket on my cell and asked them politely to open the doors. For some weird reason these guys did not think of that.

We haven’t been able to get fresh basil for some time. It’s not a big deal, except that my wife makes pesto since spaghetti with pesto is one of my son’s favorite meals (he’s a bit picky in what he likes, though he’ll tolerate lots).

I guess phones are for looking at now, not talking to. Maybe they were waiting for somebody to park in front, get out and walk up with a key to start the day.

Closer to home, 53% of Republicans view Trump as the 2020 election winner. They don’t even know America has a new president.
