The worst bike crash I ever had was when I was going very slow - no more than 5 or 6mph, when the guy in front of me suddenly stopped with no warning and my hands weren’t on the brake levers. Fell over sideways and tried to relax but ended up with two broken ribs and a mild concussion, and a gash on my ankle where the big front gear attacked it.

I’ve had crashes going 20mph+ that caused less damage. It just caught me at exactly the wrong moment, I guess.

That is extreme for just falling over sideways. I’ve laid down a motorcycle and been pinned under the hot engine with a lot less damage.

As a kid I had one of those bikes with the banana seat and tall handlebars. I wiped out, and the handlebars scooped under and pulled out my ribs. It hurt a lot but I didn’t break anything.

I’ve always been very lucky on a bike. Even yesterday, when a jerk in a red car got too close. The luck failed me once on foot.

The broken ribs happened because I tried to tuck and roll but ended up falling over sideways with my elbow right in the side of my rib cage. It was bone against bone.

The RWNJ outrage du jour, the Mickey/Minnie “sex cartoon,” makes even less sense than most such outrages. Mickey and Minnie are a stable, consenting heterosexual (important to RWNJs) couple of very senior years (90+) I do not share their penchant for giant blue sex toys, and would definitely not want to witness it, but I can avoid that by either not looking or by keeping my mind out of the goober- gutter. Certainly nothing about it is illegal. Indeed, given their advanced ages, I say more power to them.

I’ve been carted to the hospital twice with bike injuries. The first time I was apparently partially hidden in corn at an intersection and a young woman plowed through me in her Trans Am. I have a hole in my left shin and a scar on my head from breaking her windshield with it. The second one, though, I just hit a rock on an early morning ride. I was going at about 25mph, just feeling great, and the next thing I knew I was on the pavement. A guy on his way to work picked me up and took me to the emergency room. I have a slightly separated shoulder from that one. Now I have bursitis there.

I’m looking forward to taking up cycling again this summer. Even if it’s just a couple of miles around my neighborhood to begin. So wild that I used to do marathons, biathalons and Century rides regularly and now I’m fat as fuck. I shall return. Maybe. Could be.

I’ve been keeping an eye on E-Bikes and E-Motorcycles for awhile, as a motorcycle rider I’m waiting for the Tesla of E-Motorcycles, but there isn’t one (Zero has issues), and might never be one, and E-Bikes actually seem to make so much more sense than E-Motorcycles at this point. That said one of the youtube creators on the subject had this video which is ‘food for thought’.

Also check out his video where he made his own Electric motorcycle too.

Is the difference the power level?

(IMHO, they’re all motorcycles.)

I wonder why there aren’t Tesla e-motorcycles. It could be affordable for some of the people who can’t afford their cars.

They should just be called “motorcycles,” with the regular internal combustion style called “enginecycles.”

re: #24 Punish Domestic Terrorists

I wonder why there aren’t Tesla e-motorcycles. It could be affordable for some of the people who can’t afford their cars.

They should just be called “motorcycles,” with the regular internal combustion style called “enginecycles.”

The “biggest” name in E-Motorcycles is Zero. The problem is, that E-Motorcycles get about 160 miles of range if you are going slow in traffic and stopping and going. If you actually get out on the highway or the boonies, it drops to somewhere around 70 miles.

My Triumph 675 gets 48-52 mpg, I can go about 160 on a tank both in town and out on the highway. E-Bikes make more sense for short commutes or trips to the store where you aren’t buying a trunk load of groceries. E-motorcycles are only good now at that too, but aren’t made for it (and people who want them want to use them as recreational vehicles mostly rather than commuters) and cost 10x as much.

Better battery technology might fix this, but right now it’s not practical. A decent Zero is like $25 grand too. My Triumph was $9900 when I got it 13 years ago. The current model of that bike is $11000-ish.

If Tesla came out with something, I wouldn’t buy it anyway for a couple of reasons:

1. I refuse to give Elon Musk a dime if I can help it.
2. They will make it something god awful ugly like that stupid truck.
3. It will still have the same “Right to Repair” issues that Tesla cars and Zero Motorcycles have.
4. Certain EV manufacturers, Tesla included seem to view their vehicles as a “mobile app platform” first and a “vehicle” second, rather than the other way around. I’m not a fan of that attitude/viewpoint and it often leads to further ownership vs licensing and right to repair issues as above.

So I’m waiting for Honda, Yamaha, or Triumph to try their hand at this seriously for the people who what an actual motorcycle to do actual motorcycle things. I can build a goddamn E-Bike myself.

Unfortunately, the test to verify rabies requires the animal to be euthanized. Maybe they will eventually develop a non lethal test; but that’s not what’s in use. The fox had bitten at least nine people in total.

To be fair, those comments were made before the invasion. I would ask them to comment again all things considered.

Doesn’t the date say March 16th? About 3 weeks into the war?

Pulled this from a facebook post:

(whether or not it’s true it sounds like a good idea)

ATTENTION ALL TEACHERS AND PARENTS
This is an article that needs to be repeated:
Every Friday afternoon Chase’s teacher asks her students to take out a piece of paper and write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. The children know that these requests may or may not be honored. She also asks the students to nominate one student whom they believe has been an exceptional classroom citizen that week. All ballots are privately submitted to her.
And every single Friday afternoon, after the students go home, Chase’s teacher takes out those slips of paper, places them in front of her and studies them. She looks for patterns.
Who is not getting requested by anyone else?
Who doesn’t even know who to request?
Who never gets noticed enough to be nominated?
Who had a million friends last week and none this week?
You see, Chase’s teacher is not looking for a new seating chart or “exceptional citizens.” Chase’s teacher is looking for lonely children. She’s looking for children who are struggling to connect with other children. She’s identifying the little ones who are falling through the cracks of the class’s social life. She is discovering whose gifts are going unnoticed by their peers. And she’s pinning down- right away- who’s being bullied and who is doing the bullying.
As a teacher, parent, and lover of all children - I think that this is the most brilliant Love Ninja strategy I have ever encountered. It’s like taking an X-ray of a classroom to see beneath the surface of things and into the hearts of students. It is like mining for gold - the gold being those little ones who need a little help - who need adults to step in and TEACH them how to make friends, how to ask others to play, how to join a group, or how to share their gifts with others. And it’s a bully deterrent because every teacher knows that bullying usually happens outside of her eyeshot - and that often kids being bullied are too intimidated to share. But as she said - the truth comes out on those safe, private, little sheets of paper.
As Chase’s teacher explained this simple, ingenious idea - I stared at her with my mouth hanging open. “How long have you been using this system?” I said.
Ever since Columbine, she said. Every single Friday afternoon since Columbine.
Good Lord.
This brilliant woman watched Columbine knowing that ALL VIOLENCE BEGINS WITH DISCONNECTION. All outward violence begins as inner loneliness. She watched that tragedy KNOWING that children who aren’t being noticed will eventually resort to being noticed by any means necessary.
And so she decided to start fighting violence early and often, and with the world within her reach. What Chase’s teacher is doing when she sits in her empty classroom studying those lists written with shaky 11 year old hands - is SAVING LIVES. I am convinced of it. She is saving lives.
And what this mathematician has learned while using this system is something she really already knew: that everything - even love, even belonging - has a pattern to it. And she finds those patterns through those lists - she breaks the codes of disconnection. And then she gets lonely kids the help they need. It’s math to her. It’s MATH.
All is love- even math. Amazing.
Chase’s teacher retires this year - after decades of saving lives. What a way to spend a life: looking for patterns of love and loneliness. Stepping in, every single day- and altering the trajectory of our world.
TEACH ON, WARRIORS. You are the first responders, the front line, the disconnection detectives, and the best and ONLY hope we’ve got for a better world. What you do in those classrooms when no one is watching- it’s our best hope.copied for hope to save more Children

Oh gah, it’s those little villages on the west side of Houston…this is nothing new. (Remembering back to the 1980s…) So much corruption.

ETA: He’s *exempt*! Exempt employees are not supposed to be paid overtime. And he signed off on his own time cards. Sheesh. But no surprise, ultimately.

If by tree rats you mean squirrels, no, they almost never get rabies (any mammal can get it). Neither do rat rats, by the way.

So go ahead and handle squirrels.
