Unless someone changes their mind at the last minute, it looks like Ketanji Brown Jackson will be confirmed to the Supreme Court. So here’s the live feed from the Senate chamber to witness this historic vote.

The Senate is voting Thursday to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court. The vote follows three days of testimony from Jackson and questions from senators in late March. Jackson was nominated by President Joe Biden in February to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer. If confirmed, Jackson will be the first Black woman on the high court. The PBS NewsHour’s Nicole Ellis will speak with NewsHour correspondent John Yang immediately following the vote about what comes next in this process for Judge Jackson.

Yeah. I mean, it’s not like the vast majority of places where there are large gatherings of people are gun-free zones or anything.////

(sarcasm because obviously, that is the case - like workplaces, schools, etc.)

I have a flat tire to fix. I get to be a bike mechanic again! I had to go to a bike shop and buy a tube. That hadn’t happened before today in this millennium. The last time I was in a bike shop and bought a tube, it was cases of them.

Donald Trump used to bank with the big guns. Now he’s borrowing from Axos Financial, an obscure, internet-only institution based in San Diego and Las Vegas.

In mid-February, Axos refinanced a $100 million Trump Tower mortgage due in September, a New York City Finance Department document shows. The new loan was made just days after The Trump Organization’s auditor resigned, saying that 10 years of the company’s financial statements could not be relied upon.

In lending to The Trump Organization, Axos is stepping up when other banks have balked. But this is not unheard-of for Axos. An examination of legal filings, internal documents and land records shows Axos has a history of handling atypical loans.

Axos has teamed up with nonbank lenders on loans to small businesses that carried cripplingly high double- and triple-digit effective annual interest rates, loan documents show. The bank has also specialized in loans to foreign nationals, internal documents and its website state, and has offered a type of loan that allows borrowers who paid cash for a property to turn around and instantly take money out. Such loans may pose money laundering risks, banking analysts say.

The Trump Organization used to borrow from major banks. Now look who’s lending it money (NBC News via Yahoo)

just an unattributed assertion in a Chicago Tribune article opinion piece by John Lott Jr. from 2018:

Most gunmen are smart enough to know that they can kill more people if they attack places where victims can’t defend themselves. That’s one reason why 98 percent of mass public shootings since 1950 have occurred in places where citizens are banned from having guns.

Was he really stupid enough to believe that the Secret Service would let him go in the first place? That is the amazing thing about Trump: he always gets a Mulligan for being clueless.

Things are getting spicy in Pakistan….

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has ruled that Prime Minister Imran Khan’s move to dissolve parliament and call for early elections was illegal.
- The court has ordered parliament to reconvene and hold a no-confidence vote that could lead to Khan’s removal from office.
- The political crisis erupted last week when Khan lost his parliamentary majority and was on the verge of being forced from office by a no-confidence motion tabled by the opposition.
- But the deputy speaker of parliament threw out the motion, ruling it was unconstitutional and part of a foreign conspiracy. Khan then dissolved parliament.
- The standoff has thrown the country of 220 million people, ruled by the military for extended periods since independence in 1947, into a full-blown constitutional crisis.

Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif has said the Supreme Court’s decision meant the “people of Pakistan have won” while congratulating all who “supported, defended and campaigned for the supremacy of the constitution”.

The first subvariant of Omicron, the latest major variant of the novel coronavirus, was bad. BA.1 drove record cases and hospitalizations in many countries starting last fall.

The second subvariant, BA.2, was worse in some countries—setting new records for daily cases across China and parts of Europe.

Now BA.1 and BA.2 have combined to create a third subvariant. XE, as it’s known, is a “recombinant”—the product of two viruses interacting “Frankenstein”-style in a single host.

With its long list of mutations, XE could be the most contagious form of the coronavirus yet. “From the WHO reports, it does appear to have a bit more of an edge in terms of transmissibility,” Stephanie James, the head of a COVID testing lab at Regis University in Colorado, told The Daily Beast.

But don’t panic just yet. The same mix of subvariants that produced XE might also protect us from it. Coming so quickly after the surge of BA.1 and BA.2 cases, XE is on track to hit a wall of natural immunity—the antibodies left over from past infection in hundreds of millions of people.

Two COVID Variants Just Combined Into a ‘Frankenstein’ Virus (The Daily Beast)

However, I filed to run for the village board again. We’ll see how that goes.

State Senator Megan Hunt was on fire on her final speech before the abortion trigger-ban vote came up, calling out one senator as a liar, and noting that no one who voted for this bill could ever be her friend if they wanted her eleven year-old daughter to carry a pregnancy.

This one is particularly insidious, because I thought I had it on the first guess. Turns out, the first part is a sample for someone else’s “I never heard of it” song.

Conservatives only care about themselves. That’s why even with family members dying in the hospital, they will still deny it’s Covid-19, still claim it’s a hoax, and pressure doctors or coroners to put down something other than Covid-19 as the cause of death.

This historic picture should be front and center of any and all Democratic Party efforts to turn out the vote amongst minority and woman outreach programs. Because should Republicans win the White House in 2024, it will all go away starting in 2025.

Civil Rights, Woman’s Rights, Child labor and marriage, any Democratic Party SCOTUS appointments, the right for any adult to vote… ALL benefits of liberal causes will simply go away. We will literally rewind the legal clock back 150-250 years.

If those who stand to directly benefit voting with the Democratic Party once again refuse to actually turn out to actually vote for Biden we will allow cranks, criminials, con men, and elitist opportunists like Trump, McConnell, Ted Cruz, Matt Gaetz, Hawley, Barnett, Clarence Thomas, etc etc etc dictate to the country an unrecognizable hellscape with a few short years. We have a lot to lose and this picture hopefully serves as a testament to that.

The experiment is seeing what happens when you coat children with alcohol and set them on fire. It seems to be something this school does regularly.

The school district did not provide any additional details but Granbury police told NBC 5 that on April 1, a 12-year-old boy suffered possible third-degree burns. This was after his teacher, who police have identified only as a 37-year-old woman, put hand sanitizer on both his hands and lit it on fire as part of a science experiment.

“It looks like every class that day had a group of students volunteer to do it. There was also another classroom that was doing that same thing where there was no incident,” Lt. Russell Grizzard with the Granbury Police Department told NBC 5.

what is this lunacy reporting?
if it happened “doing the same thing” IT WAS AN INCIDENT.
maybe they are inartfully saying ‘no injury’??

then we’re back to no injury no problem
so i can point my loaded weapon at anyone. if i dont fire, no problem.
in fact i can actually shoot.
as long as i miss, no problem.

now the unserious part:

did anyone determine whether they “37-year-old woman” teacher was gay?
or secretly teaching CRT?

those the laws that are being passed because that stuff is way more dangerous than this. //

It’s very important to get a good sample size. If you only gravely burn one child that doesn’t show it’s reproducible.

If I had kids, I’d want them in the control group that is not on fire.

re: #176 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

This district is a weird mix. It’s mostly conservative when you look at who wins the elections. I personally think the poorest areas are where some serious voter suppression brought on by the usual tactics but also people were just giving up and not even bothering to vote. That is until Stacey Abrams and Fair Fight began digging in and working hard to get people not just registered, but watching for shenanigans. We had pretty good turnout here, and while Warnock and Ossoff won, there was almost no turnover of house or state level offices where I am. In the next district over, MTG has Marcus Flowers to contend with. He’s a black veteran who wears a cowboy hat sometimes and is often accompanied by his dog(whose name escapes me). He also isn’t easily intimidated. He has a chance, but that district is extremely white and mostly small town/rural, so I am not overly optimistic. I am optimistic that a lot of people are waking up and getting involved. We just need to unite and become a more powerful force to move the racists out of the way.

watch as our mainstream media either ignore CPAC’s cozying up to actual Nazis in Europe or describe them as “alternative parties”.

This is the place where her own words/video need to be thrown at her stupid face. I bet a bit of digging would find someone getting hurt as at least a partial result of her ridiculous mouth leakage. She’s hateful, loves being hateful and won’t stop until she is thrown out of power. People like her break everything they touch. And do not care.

funniest part of the legal proceedings is when Ammon tried to claim that working for his campaign for governor should count as community service.

My sister-in-law attended MacArthur High for a time in the mid-eighties, when she got tired of private Catholic school education. Despite my wife having graduated from the very conservative private Catholic university down the street from MacArthur, given our family’s advocacy of LGBTQIA+ issues for the past quarter-century, I know that if my wife were teaching in Irving where she grew up, she’d be targeted like these people.
