A Tiny Desk (Home) Concert Whose Time Has Come: The Linda Lindas

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Marissa Lorusso | April 11, 2022
A library might not be the first place that comes to mind when you picture a suitable venue for a punk band — unless, of course, you’re thinking about The Linda Lindas, who shot to viral stardom after a performance in the Los Angeles Public Library’s Cypress Park Branch last year. For the band’s Tiny Desk (home) concert, the teen punks returned to the library — this time, playing at the Los Angeles Central Library — with several members even sporting buttons that pledge love to the LA library system. “We’re playing the library once more,” guitarist Lucia de la Garza says with a smile, in awe of the “cool space.” (It feels fitting — after all, having artists perform an intimate, powerful set under daytime office lights is kind of the Tiny Desk’s whole thing.)

The four members of The Linda Lindas – sisters Mila de la Garza and Lucia de la Garza, their cousin Eloise Wong and their family friend Bela Salazar – first played together in 2018, as members of a new-wave cover band put together by Kristin Kontrol of Dum Dum Girls. Soon after that, they formed their own punk group, going on to open for artists like Bikini Kill, Alice Bag and Best Coast.

In the band’s Tiny Desk (home) concert, each of the members — all between 11 and 17 — take turns singing, starting with “Growing Up,” the title track to the band’s debut album, sung by guitarist Lucia. After a couple upbeat tracks sung by drummer Mila and bassist Wong about friendship and frustration, the band is joined by an additional percussionist. “We put an advertisement in the library a few days ago,” Lucia jokes, before introducing Spencer Lere of the band Bleached (who is also, Mila points out, her drum teacher) for a surfy track sung in Spanish by guitarist Salazar. The band ends its set with the scorching “Racist, Sexist Boy.” Co-written by Mila and her cousin, it’s the song that first caught the internet’s attention with its powerfully righteous anger about a racist incident Mila experienced in the early days of the pandemic. “Here we go — let’s blow the roof off,” Lucia says dryly just before the final song — but given how hard these four rock, you’d be forgiven for thinking she’s not joking at all.

“Cuántas Veces”
“Racist, Sexist Boy”

UPenn Law Professor Amy Wax is at it again, attacking Blacks, other non-Western immigrants, and singling out Indian immigrants. On Tucker Carlson’s show.

But she still claims not to be racist.

But she still claims not to be racist.

It’s pretty obvious she’s envious of the achievements white men have accomplished, and is resentful she isn’t part of that group.

CEO speaks like a CEO. They did donate the majority of the terminals, so this seems like nitpicking to me.

After Russia launched its invasion, Ukrainian officials pleaded for Elon Musk’s SpaceX to dispatch their Starlink terminals to the region to boost Internet access. “Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals en route,” Musk replied to broad online fanfare.

Since then, the company has cast the actions in part as a charitable gesture. “I’m proud that we were able to provide the terminals to folks in Ukraine,” SpaceX president Gwynne Shotwell said at a public event last month, later telling CNBC, “I don’t think the U.S. has given us any money to give terminals to the Ukraine.”

But according to documents obtained by The Technology 202, the U.S. federal government is in fact paying millions of dollars for a significant portion of the equipment and for the transportation costs to get it to Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced it has purchased more than 1,330 terminals from SpaceX to send to Ukraine, while the company donated nearly 3,670 terminals and the Internet service itself.

This is a question for Anymouse. I noticed a while back that you said you had quit the Nebraska legislative race for District 47 because of threats on your life. Quite understandable.

But on checking the Nebraska SOS site I see that there is no election scheduled for district 47 this year. Surely you knew that. Care to explain?

“[Embedded content]

Take your time. I no longer post here, so I’ve forgotten how to post an image, otherwise I’d post the image of your March 9 post where you mention the district and the man who currently holds the office.

(moved from previous thread)

Not sure why that is. I was allowed to file the paperwork.

Double checking, Sen. Erdman was last elected in 2021, so he’s term limited in 2025. I should have checked that before filing, but the county clerk shouldn’t have accepted my paperwork either.

I guess that’s a foul-up all around. We’ll see what happens in the village board election instead.

Another piece of the puzzle is that the NE legislature has 4 year terms with half the legislature up for election every 2 years. The next election for district 47 is in 2024. Perhaps the system just assumes anyone who registers as a candidate is doing so for the next available election.

Rachel Maddow is back. Sort of. From now til the end of April she will be on M-Th. Starting in May she will only be on Mondays. So she can finish up stuff she’s working on right now. Everything else is kinda up in the air.

MSNBC can give Joe and Micka McDipshit FOUR HOURS five days a week, instead of finding a replacement for Stephanie Ruhle who moved to Brian Williams’ old time slot at 11pm. I am hoping honestly they would give Rachel’s hour to Jen Psaki, but I don’t know how good she is at investigative journalism. I guess she would have Rachel’s team who help her research.

The death of Eric Boehlert last week really has made me think about how broken “news” is. More than I usually think about it and how to fix it. We need people who are dedicated to not just exposing the corrupt owners of media, but the lies and spin and then countering that with truth. And that takes talent, time and lots of money. We lack large amounts of the last two. The talent is there, but there’s no or very little media there that tells the truth. We’re in danger kids. It’s not getting better.

I don’t think so, since there are opening and closing dates to file. For example, filing for city council/village board is open right now, but incumbents cannot file for a few more weeks.

I wonder if I can get my money back?

Spectrum here in the DFW area has it’s own news channel at channel 1. I haven’t watched much of it, but I caught a segment talking about Abbott, how he’s blocking trucks, making rumbles about Chinese and Russian people coming up through the Mexican border, and having to walk back the putting immigrants on buses bit. The guest they had on rightfully, twice, called it a race to the bottom between Abbott and DeSantis to compete for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination.

Scientists find fossil of dinosaur ‘killed on day of asteroid strike’
Remains of thescelosaurus in North Dakota believed to date back to extinction of species 66m years ago
theguardian.com

Scientists believe they have been given an extraordinary view of the last day of the dinosaurs after they discovered the fossil of an animal they believe died that day.

The perfectly preserved leg, which even includes remnants of the animal’s skin, can be accurately dated to the time the asteroid that brought about the dinosaurs’ extinction struck Earth 66m years ago, experts say, because of the presence of debris from the impact, which rained down only in its immediate aftermath.

“It’s absolutely bonkers,” said Phillip Manning, a professor of natural history at the University of Manchester. He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme the thescelosaurus leg discovered at the Tanis dig site in North Dakota was the “ultimate dinosaur drumstick”.

So one of the big things these days on you tube is “reaction videos”. Someone listens to a song that they have perhaps never hear or never listened closely to before. Some are better than others, obviously. I’ve found one I enjoy a lot is a professional opera singer named Elizabeth Zharoff and she has a lot of fun with it.

This is her first-time hearing Ozzy singing “Crazy Train”. It’ worth the time to watch :)

You know. I was actually watching her stuff the other day. Specifically her reactions to TOOL songs. And she brought me back around to their song The Grudge and how it relates to the state of politics in our country (and everywhere else for that matter).

Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive your scarlet lettermen
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip ‘em to the lonesome end
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Terrified of being wrong, ultimatum prison cell
Saturn ascends
Choose one or ten
Hang on or be humbled again
Clutch it like a cornerstone, otherwise it all comes down
Justify denials and grip ‘em to the lonesome end
Saturn ascends, comes round again
Saturn ascends, the one, the ten
Ignorant to the damage done
Wear the grudge like a crown of negativity
Calculate what we will or will not tolerate
Desperate to control all and everything
Unable to forgive these scarlet lettermen
Wear the grudge like a crown
Desperate to control
Unable to forgive and sinking deeper
Defining
Confining
And sinking deeper
Controlling
Defining
And we’re sinking deeper
Saturn comes back around to show you everything
Let’s you choose what you will and will not see and then
Drags you down like a stone or lifts you up again
Spits you out like a child, light and innocent
Saturn comes back around
Lifts you up like a child
or drags you down like a stone
To consume you till you choose to let this go
Choose to let this go
Give away the stone
Let the oceans take and trans mutate this cold and fated anchor
Give away the stone
Let the waters kiss and trans mutate these leaden grudges into gold
Let go

Finishing reading, again, the article linked in #40 above. This is just so exquisite.

My experiences with the Russian and Ukrainian armies over the two decades reminded me of a passage from Jean Larteguy’s The Centurions. In a moment of frustration, a French officer summarizes the two purposes an army can serve:

I’d like [France] to have two armies: one for display with lovely guns, tanks, little soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals, and dear little regimental officers who would be deeply concerned over their General’s bowel movements or their Colonel’s piles, an army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country. The other would be the real one, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display, but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught. That’s the army in which I should like to fight.

For all their bellicose rhetoric and Victory Day parades on Red Square, I sometimes wonder if Putin and Shoygu know the difference between the two types of armies. The Ukrainians sure do.

This is such important truth that I’m not sure all the various pundits wondering how the Russians keep losing have understood. They built an NCO corps and then used that to build an Army. Since 2014, the world changed and the Russians failed to notice & thank whatever god you believe in.

The purpose of the Russian Army in the past two decades has largely been to sell weapons. They roll through Red Square with the latest prototype armour, flying prototype jets overhead, boasting about the power and scale of the Russian bear with the hope that foreign buyers will see how amazing they look and express interest in acquiring them for their own militaries.

But then they get into combat and within weeks if not days, they’re rolling out the museum pieces and dropping pallet-loads of dumb bombs on civilians. And when observers ask why those cutting-edge prototypes aren’t making their combat debut, the reality sets in: There are only ever a handful at most, all reserved for testing and showrooms, while the muscle of the Russian Army remains largely last-gen tanks and aircraft still using munitions that their granddaddies would be familiar with.

Bulwark is full of writers whom I’ve detested over the years due to their prior demonization of Democrats and single-minded support of Republicans, but Trump certainly has changed the perspectives of those die-hard Republicans who were also true believers in the United States and our mission to “save” the world, especially those Republicans who were devotees of neo-con causes.

Avoid guessing the hidden word in as many tries as possible. Sounds easy, but there’s a catch!

If you guess a letter that’s not in the word, it’s grayed out and you can’t use it again.
If you guess a letter that is in the word, it turns yellow and you must include it.
If you guess a letter in the exact position, it turns red and is locked in place.

That was when I met him. I was involved in his Primary campaign in Wisconsin that year. I also believe he would have done far better in the general election because they would not have had the Vietnam baggage. But we never found out…

re: #49 William Lewis

Finishing reading, again, the article linked in #40 above. This is just so exquisite.

This is such important truth that I’m not sure all the various pundits wondering how the Russians keep losing have understood. They built an NCO corps and then used that to build an Army. Since 2014, the world changed and the Russians failed to notice & thank whatever god you believe in.

The article also made clear that the rot was in the Russian military back in the 1990’s; Putin’s ascension to power did nothing to remedy the situation and probably exacerbated it. Hopefully, Ukraine will be able to emerge triumphant from this destruction, but the Russian plan seems to be to level the nation. It doesn’t matter if the Ukraine military is superior, if the Russian goal is exclusively devastation of civilian areas.

At our weekly Monday zoom gathering, one friend was very eager for Ukraine to attack Russia proper and challenged us on what the American response should be if Russia used tactical nuclear weapons. I don’t think it will come to that but if pushed to the brink, I am increasingly uncertain about Putin’s actions to avoid defeat. His new general is a war criminal, so any outrage is certainly a possibility.

I lost my husband to congestive heart disease at 11:23 pm Atlanta time. It was sudden, he was gone in 15 minutes. His lungs filled with fluid and that was it. His last words were I Love You.

I am devastated . I have to go home and explain to my son that his dad didn’t make it. I am lost. Completely lost. He was my world and he’s gone. Fuck. I can’t. I just can’t. I don’t know what to do.

Mike Dunford’s (questauthority) take on the current institutional reputation of SCOTUS:

For that definition of short term:
Unless there is sweeping structural chance to the Court, it will not fully recover its institutional legitimacy in my lifetime.

Structural change is not likely to happen in our lifetime; but then it hasn’t happened in the past century. Structural change that benefits this nation would require a significant majority of Democrats in both Houses and that’s not likely to happen any time soon

But there are potential ways for it to regain legitimacy:

Barrett experiences a Blackmun-type revelation that changes her perspective. When he was appointed to the Court, the term “Minnesota Twins” applied to the relationship between Blackmun and Burger. Blackmun could be reliably counted on to vote the same way as his friend Burger. But gradually he switched his viewpoint and became one of the more liberal members of the court. Barrett is on a Court that now has 4 women; it is possible that their views could moderate her philosophy.

Or a couple of the more extreme members of the Court are forced to leave, for whatever reason. Perhaps the discovery that they were involved in the January 6 plot. One never knows.

The current Court is the worst since the Fuller Court.

Thomas is incompetent in legal matters, yes, but that is not what makes him special. He shares a familiar streak with others in the far right wing in that their main path to success to the ability to fail upwards.

Clarence Thomas, ever since his Ayn Rand conversion in the 70’s, has been drawn to the pursuit of pure power just like Trump. Thomas sees himself not as a Justice, but now has the power associated with presidents and kings, or at least a king’s council. His decisions are at war with legality, precedent, compassion and common sense. His willingness to cast aside any help towards racial justice speaks to his disassociation with the black experience in America and his 100% attention to personal power at any and all costs.

Clarence Thomas types are prevalent in societies like Putin’s Russia, Iran and China and are an acid in the machinery gears of democracy. The dark core of right wing rot is just starting insIde the core of American Government and it is only going to get worse.

You can take out the 2 religious lines if they don’t apply. I found it very helpful when we lost my father in law and my father the same year.

Walking with Grief from Celtic Daily Prayer

Do not hurry as you walk with grief;
it does not help the journey.
Walk slowly, pausing often:
do not hurry as you walk with grief.
Be not disturbed by memories that come unbidden.
Swiftly forgive; and let Christ speak for you unspoken words.
Unfinished conversation will be resolved in Him.
Be not disturbed.
be gentle with the one who walks with grief.
If it is you, be gentle with yourself.
Swiftly forgive;
walk slowly, pausing often.
Take time,
be gentle, as you walk with grief.

re: #129 Punish Domestic Terrorists

I read that in Christian Bale’s voice.

“Do you like Phil Collins? I’ve been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn’t understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where, uh, Phil Collins’ presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group’s undisputed masterpiece. It’s an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.”

That screenplay was absolutely brilliant. And Christian Bale was an absolutely perfect casting choice.

Sure, they’re quite young and though they’ve certainly heard the song on the radio over the decades, they weren’t around during the actual disco era, when the BeeGees were pretty much everywhere on TV.

Which has been interesting in a number of the various reaction videos. The listeners are generally young and were not yet born or listening to music when the songs came. And they often filter the context of the song through a different set of filters than older people do since their experiences and history are different.

And Hip-hop has a different set of tropes than the older rock and roll and metal. So they often get surprised by things - or they notice how something they know has sampled what they are currently reacting to. One reaction duo appears to have developed a great appreciation of Black Sabbath as a result of listening to it.

Yea. The whole “I thought the BeeGees were black!” thing is absolutely hilarious.

The BeeGees definitely based their sound on R&B, so it’s easy to understand why they thought that. At the same time, lots of whites in the era treated them as black as well, and the overreaction to disco was a reaction to R&B and blacks in general. Record burnings, like the big one, I think in Chicago, wasn’t just disco records, but all sorts of records by black artists.

Yeah, as I recall it wasn’t just a reaction to disco; it seemed part and parcel of a broader backlash against R&B, soul, funk - genres that had been getting increasing airplay on radio at the time.

Certainly, disco was a fad. When Saturday Night Fever was released in late 1977, by all accounts that fad was pretty much played out.

Not anything specifically to do with your response, but northern Wisconsin reminded me that we used to go to Boy Scout summer camp at a place called Tomahawk near Birchwood and the Wisconsin kids would make fun of us: “oooh, so yer from Illinoiz.” (I went once to Rhinelander in Boy Scouts for a snowmobile trip. The only thing I remember is that it was cold and that you could drive up to the back of someone’s home and it was often a bar.)

ETA: oops, googled, it was Camp Tesomas near Rhinelander where we went in the summer and not Tomahawk Scout reservation.

Hmm. I can see what you’re saying but, honestly, I would say that the Fuller Court was far less corrupt than the Robert’s Court. If nothing else, Thomas remains the single worst SCOTUS Justice in the history of the nation; utterly and completely incompetent.

The Fuller Court gave us Plessy vs Ferguson and Lochner vs New York. If a court supports evil, then it’s corrupt, even if it’s not being paid off. Is Thomas truly incompetent, but just malicious and doing his best to impose his destructive views on our nation? Destructive views that are part and parcel of the Federalist Society vision for the United States?

Trump was certain that his supporters would not care about Ukraine and would see Putin in the same light as he did: a military genius. Tracey is trying to live up to that narrative that Trump believed would dominate the conservative media and his base, despite the fact that apparently most of his ardent admirers have, for whatever reason, switched to the opposite side in this conflict. Indeed, my brain dead Trumpster FB friend even claimed, all evidence to the contrary, that it was the left who really didn’t support Ukraine.

AT&T-backed satellite provider DirecTV finally made it official last Tuesday, dropping far-right One America News from its lineup, leaving the conspiratorial channel in a full-blown existential crisis. The inevitability of OAN’s calamity also caused an exodus from the Trumpy network in recent weeks, Source Material has confirmed.

Even though OAN owners Robert and Charles Herring hoped to force AT&T to keep them, and at one point begged other providers for a rescue, several key staffers saw the writing on the wall and bailed.

Update on this morning’s subway incident.

16 injuries, including 10 who appear to have been shot. The perpetrator used smoke “grenades” to confuse and fired at people randomly. Suspect at large. The NYPD isn’t calling this terrorism.

The suspect was described as a Black male, 5-foot-5 and 175 to 180 pounds, wearing a green construction vest and gray hooded sweatshirt.

An FBI official says they are assisting NYPD and that it does not appear related to terrorism at the moment, but FBI headquarters is monitoring.

There are subway disruptions throughout the area across multiple lines. CLICK HERE for the latest MTA service updates.

/ed spell

Yes, it appears that some of the victims jumped on a subway from the station where the incident occurred to flee. That’s why victims were found elsewhere.

But for the easy availability of guns, this would not have been possible.

Enough good buys with guns would have left him a bullet-ridden corpse. Along with several bullet-ridden subway cars, station platforms and passers-by but a small price to pay for freedom, etc….

In many ways, it IS a proxy war. And what is generally unstated is that the U.S. is perfectly happy to have Ukraine grind up the Russian army for us. If there’s going to be a NATO conflict with Russia, it will help if the Russians have lost 50% of their total force between now and then. But we don’t say these things out loud, because it’s rather gauche to do so. Well, the Russians did this to us through nearly a decade in Vietnam. Payback is a bitch.

re: #194 I Would Prefer Not To

I live here. I hear the helicopters overhead. I have no idea what is happening. Need to go into city, but the subway is probably closed. Will report latter.

They’ve put on extra buses to run along what would normally be the subway route.

Pretty quick of them, I’m actually impressed.

re: #206 The Pie Overlord!

Apparently, the perp at large was wearing a hi-vis vest and a gas mask; a friend of mine here in town, who’s originally from NYC, commented to me once, “I remember seeing a guy dressed only with a sock over his dong strolling down 6th Avenue in broad daylight.”

I get the feeling that no one in NYC would even bat an eye over someone wearing a hi-vis vest (gas mask might be odd); it’s like the ladder test - walk into any building holding a ladder and for a lot of people, they’d just brush it off as a maintenance worker - it looks official.
