The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Nikki Birch | April 15, 2022
The opening piano notes are barely sufficient warning to brace for the sweet and powerful voices that transport us to Samora Pinderhughes’ Tiny Desk (home) concert, shot on film. “The Cry” heralds our journey into the Bay Area native’s sophomore album, GRIEF. The vocalists move briefly out of frame for “Masculinity,” a probing, open letter that addresses masculine stereotypes with directness and compassion. The song blooms beautifully, with Pinderhughes accompanied by strings, a background chorus, and his sister, renowned flutist Elena Pinderhughes.

Between tunes, Pinderhughes greets us and shares that the setting for this Tiny Desk (home) concert is his exhibition, “The Healing Project,” at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Five years in the making, the project explores trauma and healing from structural violence with conversations, film, music and art created by incarcerated artists, including the artist Pitt Panther. Pinderhughes then plays “Holding Cell,” a dedication to those behind the walls. For his next song, Pinderhughes leads us to a blue space, a memorial shrine with candles, offerings and dedications, where we encounter the haunted pleas of “Grief.”

Pinderhughes’ ability to be vulnerable makes his music incredibly intimate. He reminds us of this quiet strength once again as he introduces the last song in his set, “Process,” with some final thoughts: “I think a lot of times we get a message that we should just succeed or triumph over something that’s difficult in our life, particularly things like depression or grief or anxiety. But sometimes it’s about living alongside those things and just taking it one day at a time.”

And if you spoke up against it to the staff, not only would the singers object, but so would a lot of other Christians as well.

Persecution comes in many forms. It’s why I have no hope for the upcoming Supreme Court case which seeks to overturn no mandatory state-sponsored prayer in schools.

Persecution comes in many forms. It’s why I have no hope for the upcoming Supreme Court case which seeks to overturn no mandatory state-sponsored prayer in schools.

I’m just going to point out to you that case is an edge case (Kennedy v Bremerton). It’s about a privileged obnoxious football coach who (IMHO) decided it’s all about self-aggrandizement while using a football team as his proselytising tools. What is NOT on the table is prayer in actual school. What IS on the table is prayer outside the instructional setting, e.g. at a football game.

Now it is entirely possible that our fanatical Supreme Court justices could just overturn Abington School District v Schempp (1963) which prohibits prayer in the instructional setting at school. I will give you that. But I’ll also tell you that the USA of 2022 is very different from the USA of 1963, and it would be a fucking free for all akin to civil war if that were to happen. I live in a multireligious area and could see fanatics of various religious faiths just tearing the community apart over the prayers to be said in school.

But I don’t think that will happen. The question before the Court is much, much narrower than that. What I do think our fanatical Supreme Court justices will do is a camel’s nose under the tent maneuver. It’s not quite overturning Santa Fe ISD v Doe (2000), which involved the use of a loudspeaker at games by students over which prayers were recited by the dominant Baptist culture. Instead, the fanatic justices will carve out an exception for this guy’s allegedly private prayers in a football huddle, even if the students are pressured to join that huddle. I am completely NOT happy about this, but this is how I see the case going.

ETA: If you want to see what happens when various faiths clash over prayer, the aforementioned Santa Fe ISD v Doe is a great case. As I mentioned, the dominant Baptists had control of the district and therefore were basically praying Baptist prayers over the loudspeaker at football games. The Doe plaintiffs suing the Santa Fe ISD were described as Mormon and Catholic students. At one point, the federal district court judge had to warn the school district to stop trying to “out” the anonymous plaintiffs. So yeah, if you use this as an example (from a case that began in the mid-1990s & wasn’t resolved until 2000) and fast forward nearly three decades…I’m of the opinion that people will complain a lot louder and a lot faster if prayers are reintroduced to school and their particular prayers are not being said.

What the allegations against Herbster mean for the governor’s race (Omaha World-Herald)

It means he’ll stay in the race, and as the richest billionaire in the race, he will still win the primary.

The Nebraska GOP is resolute in staying out of “putting its thumb” on the primary (meaning they won’t condemn Herbster over the allegations of multiple years of sexual assaults).

On the Democratic side, we are down to one candidate already (State Senator Carol Blood).

The case is being presented as persecution of Christians. The school offered all sorts of accommodations to him, and he rejected them all. While it was a football game, the case is being argued as all public school spaces at any time.

Four of the justices are already on-board with this (the usual suspects) leaving Roberts as the swing vote.

The GOP has been moving toward making this a Christian State for a very long time (all my life).

Pseudo-historian and Christian Nationalist David Barton is at it again.

David Barton Is Constantly Unveiling New and Misleading Claims About American History (Right Wing Watch)

This time, at a pastors’ luncheon, he floated a new lie: The Constitution was ratified only after it was approved by churches.

Barton’s claim that the Constitution was “sent to churches” for ratification is outright false. What actually happened was that the Confederation Congress sent a resolution to all 13 state legislatures instructing them to establish conventions that would then vote whether to ratify the Constitution. While most such ratifying conventions were held in the states’ legislative chambers, some were held in churches but purely for practical, not religious, reasons.

The problem is millions of Christians believe this guy is a serious historian, and not a serious liar. And they vote based on religious lies like that.

In the discussion of Kennedy v Bremerton above, it was floated as an “edge” case.

So is the current attack on Roe by Mississippi (and the Mississippi law in question is not the most restrictive anti-abortion law out there).

This coerced football huddle Christian prayer scam is exactly what has been done before largely unquestioned under the radar.

A Jewish FB acquaintance from a Texas HS let it be known that back in the 80’s during games and practice that he was coerced by the head football coach to get involved in the specifically (fundamentalist) Christian prayers kneeling in the huddle. If he did not participate, he would not play on the field for “not being a team player”. He ended up quitting the team.

The right wing contingent of FB alumni were split in his dilemma with some expressing regret he had to go through that abuse and others joyful that Christian supremacy was enforced in a public school.

The same happened to a teenage Oklahoma basketball player. She stood aside from a prayer in the middle of the school basketball court where both teams were praying before the game. That outed her as an atheist.

The town started harassing her. The school accused her of stealing another student’s shoes (she didn’t). Then the death threats started coming in (depressingly common for atheists in the USA).

Her father pulled her from the school to protect her life, and began homeschooling. Her father describes the Christians in her school as a gang. Eventually they were forced to move.

re: #62 Barefoot Grin

I had a similar experience once. I wanted to see the Kodo drummers in Indianapolis, so I got a ticket through IU-Bloomington where I was a grad student. It came with a Charter bus. I got on and in back there was a drum circle of IU undergrads. Two-way hell. The Kodo performance was great, though.

When we caught the charter from Atlanta to the Rally to Preserve Sanity, the hippie rabbi behind me got us singing Woody Guthrie and 60s Folk Revival as dawn broke in Virginia. Wife and I thought it was cool, but his teenaged daughter didn’t. I could have complained to the Bus Captain, but I was the Bus Captain.

Here is an example of a misleading headline that may convince some people that there is no point in getting vaccinated. It compares people “not fully vaccinated” (lumping together the unvaccinated and those with just one shot) to the “fully vaccinated” (lumping together people who got boosted with those who only got two shots). The story would be very different if they compared the unvaccinated to those who are fully vaccinated and boosted.

The same school in West Virginia where YouTuber Telltale and his daughter were threatened with death and burning down their house, and they were forced to flee the state (first to Nebraska as part of the network which hides atheists under persecution, then to New York City), just held a mandatory Christian revival service during school hours.

theguardian.com

No, not the same school. Telltale’s child attended Milton Middle School in Milton, WV. This walkout occurred in February at Huntington High School in Huntington, WV.

Milton is almost 17 miles away from Huntington as the crow flies and approximately 21-23 miles away by winding mountain roads. Both, however are in Cabell County.

In 2019, Huntington had a population of 46,667, and Milton had a population of 2,586.

Kitlinx.com is the latest big hobby retailer to go out of its way to express support for Ukraine. This is from their newsletter:

Ukraine Humanitarian Project

Kitlinx has friends in Odessa, Ukraine

Kitlinx is starting a project to help the people of Ukraine, like GreatModels did with the US Service man and women in Afghanistan and Iraq in the 2000s

Below are our friends. They are affiliated with a local Church organization, which means they are volunteers.
Their wives, sisters and mothers are mostly gone to safer areas, but they are compelled to stay because they are of ‘military age’.

Kitlinx will start selling ‘Russian Warship, go f** yourself!’ stamps block of 6 as soon as we receive them from Ukraine (they are hard to get!)

95% of the cost of the sale will directly go to the people of Ukraine. Kitlinx makes no profit.

This is partly because Ukraine has long been a center of scale modeling activity, with a number of excellent manufacturers. This is the their rundown on Ukrianian suppliers, including potentially very bad news about one provider.

News from Ukraine

ResKit are working and we expect a delivery late next week…

Clear Prop are working and we expect a delivery along with

ICM and possibly Armory in about 2 weeks.

A parcel that was posted March 7th from Print Scale has also just arrived and we will have them on the website next week . We are sold out of more than 120 Print Scale decals so we will be sending them another order soon…

New and re-stock of AOA Decals arriving next week.

Pavla Models. There have been no replies to our emails and their website has gone so we think they must have closed. We are not expecting anymore deliveries so please order anything you need as soon as you can. Nearly half the range has already sold out….(emphasis added)

The school district is now facing a lawsuit. Over one hundred students walked out in protest over the forced evangelisation, which apparently included baptisms.

Students forced to attend Christian assembly at West Virginia high school, suit says (Charlotte Observer)

In Rep. Jamie Raskin’s amicus brief to the Supreme Court about the Bremerton suit to the Supreme Court, he quotes an ACLU staffer from a different case noting that despite all the divisive issues the ACLU takes on, the only ones they get death threats over are the death penalty, and taking on enforced Christianity in schools (and the prayer death threats are far more than the death penalty ones).

From the article:

Some parents said they found “proselytizing literature” in their mailboxes after speaking out against the assembly, according to the lawsuit.

“At the behest of adult evangelists, Huntington High School held an assembly for students that sought to convert students to evangelical Christianity,” lawyers representing the families said. “Some students were forced to attend. Regardless of whether attendance is mandatory or voluntary, the defendants violate the First Amendment by permitting, coordinating, and encouraging students to attend an adult-led worship service and revival at their school during the school day.”

The students and parents who filed suit are seeking a permanent injunction that would bar the district from sponsoring any future religious activities during the school day as well as damages of $1 per plaintiff and the cost of attorneys’ fees.

The mountain folk of Appalachia have a particularly hard time separating Evangelical Fundamentalist Christianity from public civic life. When you don’t travel much beyond the hills and hollers and distrust almost everyone from outside your community and almost everyone subscribes to the same religious dogma, religious pluralism, let alone atheism and agnosticism, find it hard to take root.

Going from one visiting job to a post-doc from Kentucky to Virginia I drove through WV several times. I remember flipping between radio stations. In addition to the micro-local stations that had basically flea-market call-in shows (“I’m sellin’ a set of Tupperware….”) there were decent NPR stations discussing the critical economic issues such as “why can’t we have Bible Study in our public schools?” Not implying that NPR was supportive of those views, but that they were talking about WV issues.

Those look like cool kits too. I don’t know of anyone else who made a P-35 kit. I was also amused to see a kit of the CW AT-9 as well, which looks cool but was apparently a real handful to fly so the Army used it to get pilots ready for planes like the B-26 Marauder.

Another really good boxed set is Traffic’s 2-CD boxed set Smiling Phases. So, what other boxed sets do you all consider just damned good for the money? Not boxed sets where they just put the albums all together, like the Genesis 1970-75 one (which is also damned good, by the way), but ones where there was clearly some really tasteful curating going on to just make the collection work. One I wish I could find on CD (or streaming, for that matter) is one I never owned but only heard at a cousin’s house—Miles Davis’ Tallest Trees.

Yes it does. And also a few things to say about those who accept money to say or do certain things.

He does say Any Mouse. //

How many people in Broadwater are aware of the Anymouse online handle?

Given the small population of the village, and the even smaller number who even lower themselves to use the internet, the suspect pool has to be pretty low.

The perp may have been smart enough to avoid previous trouble with the law. The perp could even be in local law enforcement.

re: #47 Decatur Deb

I was 20 years as an open agnostic on an Army base in Alabama, and no one ever threatened me with shit.

I’m not clear what you’re saying here.

“I was in a totally different situation and I had no problems”.

So?

re: #52 Dangerman

If there’s no rule against this then I’d start singing my own song over him.
We can duel it out

1 By the waters of Babylon,
there we sat down and wept,
when we remembered Zion.
2 On the willows there
we hung up our lyres.
3 For there our captors
required of us songs,
and our tormentors, mirth, saying,
“Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”
4 How shall we sing the LORD’s song
in a foreign land?
In the boney-m version of course

What part of “Congress shall establish no religion…” don’t they understand?

The Baptists were great fans of that back in the day.
