Colbert gets more specific than saying Congress. It’s GOP in Congress that blocks any action supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans. Something like 90% of Americans want responsible gun regulation and background checks, and the GOP blocks it.

The filibuster wouldn’t be invoked here if enough GOPers gave a damn to end cloture and bring things to a floor vote. They refuse to do so because they have made the tactical decision that maximizing the body count is preferable to shutting the flow of revenues to gun manufacturers who profit from the unfettered sales of all manner of guns and ammo and body armor gear to civilians.

Many years ago, I wrote a letter to a newspaper about violence in the media, suggesting that this is what they need to show. We need to see how the violence ripples out into the community destroying lives to understand the full horror of a violent event, rather than glorifying violence.

I believe th people advocating for the “single entry” or door, are talking about a single unlocked door. Either way, it’s more telling that they will work themselves into pretzels to try to do anything other than what the majority of the people want.

I watched the presser yesterday with Gov Abbott and his clown show of obese old white men in cowboy hats and Abbott was talking about expanding the Texas rules about educators being able to carry arms in schools. He mentioned right now it’s limited to “volunteers”. Does that mean the next step is forcing teachers to carry guns? Is he trying to blame the this on the teachers? At what point will people stop sending kids to school? Or maybe that’s what they want.

At any rate, i think they will just stroke their greasy beards and shuffle papers until this passes over and get back to their “culture warz”.

Oh, and even if Beto wins, there will be a rush to limit his powers in office as Abbott is wheeled out of office.

You can’t buy a beer at 18.
You can’t rent a car unless your 20/21 in most of the US (and some car rental companies put serious restrictions up to age 25).
You can’t get a car license until you’re 16-18 in most of the country.

But you can get a weapon, the explicit purpose for which, is to murder people, with no questions asked.

It’s also nominally easier to buy a gun than it is to get sudafed. Or certain baby formula.

Could you imagine the outrage if there was a gun shortage?

I’m starting to move toward abolishing the police, which I once considered unacceptable.

Parents should have forced the cops into the building, but people are afraid of the police. When cops are murdering someone in front of witnesses, no one takes out the murderer, because we’re afraid of police.

If they’re just a useless gang that instills fear in Americans and writes reports after a tragedy, why keep them around?

A police force is a good thing to have. America doesn’t actually have police though. American police are, culturally and philosophically, a gang that exists to enforce the interests of America’s privileged class by doing violence to those without privilege. They are for all intents and purposes an occupying military force whose purpose is to keep a conquered people in line.

Again, worth noting that the SC security thing only passed as quick as it did because the GOP sens were on board with unanimous consent. And that also included several progressive stalwarts on the Dem side as well. The cloture vote just now? Yeah. Again, Republicans are the stonewall monolith here, as always.

re: #107 retired cynic

Chris Murphy I believe. He’s on the record as being desperate to try and get any little thing through, even if he knows getting the bipartisan agreement is pointless. He has to try, because its his job, and it’s been his pet project since Sandy Hook. And isn’t that what folks have been rabbling about toward Dems? To ‘try’?

That is certainly true, and the fact that we send them out to maintain law and order in a weaponized society in which any encounter can quickly turn into a lethal one does not make their job any easier.

In 2019 German police shot and killed 14 persons (pop. 83 million)

In USA 634 persons were killed by police (population 330 million)

so per capita, some twelve times more in the USA

So why don’t we support our police by reducing the number of guns they have to face on a daily basis instead of “supporting” our police by absolving them of all responsibility for their actions?

That’s a fair point. Reasonable gun control, social safety nets, living wages, civil and voting rights, and all the other Democratic bills currently rotting on the Senate filibuster table would sure draw down a bunch of the desperation that fuels so much rage, and could help send violent crime rates on their way back down toward the historic lows we used to enjoy, way back in (checks notes) 2013-2015.

And we know how much calmer the GOP and police departments used to be back then.

Colbert gets more specific than saying Congress. It’s GOP in Congress that blocks any action supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans. Something like 90% of Americans want responsible gun regulation and background checks, and the GOP blocks it..

And how many of these fucking rocket scientists keep voting for Republicans?

Colbert’s right; this fucking national policy of protecting guns over children is entirely Republican-made. But if you can’t get people to punish the GOP by not voting for them, it’ll never get fixed.

Jesus, my sister is a teacher and she gets angry at me for being angry about this situation. If I blame Republicans, it’s all “Both sides are just as bad”. Her husband is on a “Biden is a moron” kick right now. He’s blaming Biden for the fact no one wants to work in his shitty warehouse because people are finding better jobs that are less strenuous and pay better.

Until people are ready to point the finger at the people responsible and keep them from the levers of power, we’re never going to get this under control.

What I do know is that that Democrats are a normal U.S. political party, which means that they are mainly pragmatic problem-solvers. That is, what US political parties are usually good at is finding out what makes their constituents unhappy and attempting to do something about it. They listen to voters in their districts; to the party coalition that nominates them; to their strongest supporters. Some of their solutions may turn out to be highly ideological. Some are not. They’re generally willing to cut deals to pass something, figuring that something is better than nothing. If it doesn’t have the votes, or it’s implemented and it doesn’t work, they’ll try something else…”

re: #215 Charles Johnson

He deleted the tweet. There’s a ‘shopped image going around purporting to show Ted Cruz posting exactly the same tweet after every gun massacre.

Disinformation is bad, but your post did encourage me to take another shot at Ted and Texas.

Deleted that tweet because I don’t want to malign police who may not have been on scene.

re: #195 John Hughes

Ok, a mostly irrelevant comment:

When we obsess over the exegesis of the 2nd:

“Why is there a comma there”, “what does well regulated mean”…

Why don’t we we talk about the simple fact that it’s bullshit.

“A well regulated militia” is not just unnecessary for “the security of a free state”, it’s also useless, often contra productive.

History shows you’re right but in 1776, they were paranoid about standing armies after the Wars of the Three Kingdoms/English Civil Wars and its New Model Army. That led to the fantasy that a militia of white males with the property owners as officers could suffice.

The only thing the militia was ever good at was killing Native Americans and slaves who tried to revolt or run away.

Knew this was in the works but didn’t know construction has started until the other day when I needed to go down to Jackpot.

Massive solar investment project coming to Twin Falls County

“It’s a 120-megawatt facility, utility-scale solar and it’ll be operational, (its) planned operation is at the end of this year,” said Idaho Power COO Adam Richins

Less than 5 minutes if you catch the (only) stop light in town right. Remember to set your watch/clock back 1 hour when you cross the creek south of town.

They want to force guns onto teachers instead of being a developed nation with reasonable gun control.

Because you can’t trust ‘em to teach about math, history, race relations, or that LGBTQ folks exist. But carrying a gun in a classroom full of kids? Sure! What’s the worst that could happen?

The Right are all coalescing around the “solution” - turn schools into fortresses, with a single entry point guarded by one or more heavily armed police officer.

I looked it up - there are 190,000 schools in America. So, that’s hundreds of thousands of new police officers, whose job is to do nothing all day, at the gate. Who would volunteer for, or take that job? And are they really who you want to give a gun to, and charge them with keeping children safe?

They have no intention of appropriating the funds that would be necessary to pay for that. As soon as the news cycle moves on, they’ll drop it.

Right. It’s chaff.

If you look at what the GOP does, as opposed to what they say, they support more school massacres.

Objectively pro-massacre.
