Colbert: Senate Skips Town Without Taking Action; 100+ GOP Midterm Ads Feature Guns

Senators McConnell and Schumer opted not to consider any gun violence solutions before letting the Senate leave for a two week break, and Republicans who are concerned with violence on TV need look no further than their own campaign ads. #Colbert #Comedy #Monologue

I’m just trying to imagine being one of those parents, terrified for my children, and a goddamn cop draws a gun on me because I want them to go in and save my kids. What the actual fuck?!

Guns don’t kill people, VIDEO GAMES KILL PEOPLE!

Never mind the literal billions of peaceful video game players around the world, most of whom don’t even own guns. Or the shooters here in the United States who weren’t video gamers. Noooo, it’s not the guns that are the problem, clearly it’s video games and their oh-so-realistic depiction of *checks notes* elves shooting at orcs with bows that inspires gun violence.

(And yes, I’m aware of hyper-realistic first-person-shooters such as the Call of Duty franchise, but the point is still as ridiculous.)

So what happened when the National Rifle Association held its 1999 convention in Denver only a few weeks after the massacre at nearby Columbine High School won’t be anything like what happens as the NRA holds this year’s convention in Houston only days after the massacre in an elementary school in nearly Uvalde.

Except for one thing:

The NRA’s revoltingly cold-blooded determination to go on with the show in spite of the carnage.

Lock up the local GQP factions in the crime scenes so they can see with their own eyes what they’re allowing to happen.

The QAnon Qcumbers would probably just say, “It’s just Hollywood special effects like the ones Tom Savini does!” or something like that.

“The way they’re firing these questions… is a little unfair”? WHAT THE FUCK?! NINETEEN KIDS ARE DEAD, ASSHOLE! I think the reporters are allowed to get a little bit skeptical, and be a little bit heated, when the police are VERY OBVIOUSLY LYING THEIR ASSES OFF about how 19 innocent kids, 2 teachers, and 2 other adults died when they were RIGHT FUCKING THERE!

“They were watching ‘Lilo and Stitch,’ it was the end of the school year, and she said one of her teachers got the email that there was a shooter in the building and went to the door, and he was right there,” Neus said. “They made eye contact.”

The 18-year-old gunman then shot out the window in the classroom door and came into the room.

“Miah says it just happened all so fast, he backed the teacher into the classroom and he made eye contact with the teacher again, looked her right in the eye and said, ‘Goodnight,’ and then shot her and killed her,” Neus said. “He said, ‘Goodnight,’ then it happened pretty fast after that, as well. He started open firing in the classroom. He hit the other teacher, a lot of Miah’s friends. At that point Miah was hit by fragments of the bullets. You could even see them yesterday on her back, on her shoulders, the back of her head.”

The killer then went through a doorway to an adjoining classroom, and he kept firing his AR-15 rifle.

Online gaming and multiplayer gaming would be the correct terms.

” is too difficult and dangerous for a typical local police force to handle”

I think it would make sense to, I don’t know, maybe look into WHY the situation would be too difficult or dangerous for police?

And regardless any such investigation would probably lead to two obvious conclusions: We need more competent police and measures taken to reduce the danger level associated with these situations.

We always invoke the bravery of the first responders at 9/11 who entered the buildings others were fleeing EXCEPT — let’s not forget that no one was expecting the buildings to collapse. They thought they might be facing fire but no one was anticipating the actual disaster that killed them. It did not take the same level of courage to rush into the towers when your mission was to rescue people who were trapped rather than face likely death yourselves because of the hazards you would be encountering.

If the cops are afraid to go into a school and protect children because the perpetrator has a particular, very frightening weapon they don’t want to have to go up against… isn’t that an argument for why any random 18-year-old should not be allowed to buy such a weapon over-the-counter with no waiting period, no training, no license, no questions asked?

The bobbies have their own share of problems and make their own fair share of messes, but their messes generally aren’t as deadly, because they don’t carry a weapon with the ability to instantly inflict fatal damage as part of their daily duties.

But they also aren’t as likely to confront malefactors who are armed to the teeth with weapons anyone can acquire. If their population was as armed as ours, they too would be likely to be carrying lethal weapons.

There’s nothing of substance behind these Texans — it’s all posing for an audience. Look tough but act like cowards or incompetents when confronting real danger

Looking at the Uvalde massacre in a cynical light…

“Success has many parents. But failure is an orphan.”

In the grand scheme of fingerpointing, the Uvalde Police Department is at the bottom of the heap. And everything is going to roll downhill. They are the designated under-the-bus chumps.

And in the end, I suspect that not much is going to change in rural isolated Uvalde. The mayor and his clique will still need somebody to beat the locals into submission. And the children will still be dead.

I guess that I read the Frum tweet a bit differently.

As folks here well know, there is a rwnj meme that a “Good guy with a gun will stop a bad guy with a gun”. This meme is flung around to justify everybody in the public carrying a gun. (And to sell everyone those guns.)

My impression of what Frum was saying is that
- There were in fact ‘good guys’ with guns right at the massacre scene.
- They did not, in fact, stop the bad guy with a gun.

The meme is (as we already knew) therefore absolute bs.

The first proposition is that cops can’t be held accountable because they’re always putting themselves at mortal risk.

Therefore, they have to be as violent as they are.

The second proposition is that cops that don’t do what is supposedly the essence of their job—risk themselves to confront danger—have to be understood as merely flawed people and cannot be held accountable.

As I point on a regular basis, the trick is to never accept the argument as an argument, it’s just a trailhead that will lead you back to the thing they’re protecting.

Iirc, last night on Lawrence ODonnell, he had on a former head of one of the Fed LE Agency divisions. The guy was saying that barricades were a well known problem.

At the beginning of one SWAT exercise, he simply walked up and locked the hallway door. And by doing so, managed to basically shut down the entire exercise.

His solution was basically what you proposed. Get a hook and ladder truck with FD guys in. “Those guys have also sorts of power equipment for opening stuff and they know how to use it.”

The massacres will continue because people want you to understand that massacres aren’t inherently bad, the right kinds of people are entitled to do massacres—vaporizing Yemen children because they might be Houthis—and if you play your cards right you’ll have the option to do further massacres of approved subjects—protesters, rioters, traitors, immigrants, perverts—and be a hero for doing it.

The problem is that occasionally an individual imagines themselves entitled to do the wrong kind of massacre.

I hate that it would take a massacre at the NRA convention to change gun laws, but that would be when Republicans accept that gun control is good.

I thought of that, but that was not a massacre, just a racist being shot by a lunatic.
If as many adult Republicans were wounded or killed as in our latest school shooting, I think we’d see change.

We may see change without the need of a bloodbath. I hope David Hogg is right.

They say those don’t count, as part of a tradition of ignoring data that doesn’t fit their narrative.

In response to open discussion of both individual and institutional complicity in sexual abuse, reactionaries have promoted social stigma and harsh penalties for the kinds of people that they find abnormal, not the kinds of people that actually do the most harm.

What they already propose w/r/t to gun violence is…

- stigma and punitiveness towards kinds of people find threatening, not the kinds of people that do the most harm

- greater license for the right kinds of people to kill without accountability

Were they ever to explicitly propose gun control…and eventually they will…it will simply follow the same path: here are the kinds of people that cannot have guns, opposed to the good kinds of people that are permitted guns and their free usage.

Hierarchy is super-ordinate to morality: punishment is not proportional to the deed but to the caste status of the doer.

Back in the 1990s, my favorite game was DOOM II. You know, on 3.5 inch floppies, because bandwidth was so crap then it took less time to run out and buy it or even get it sent by mail than to wait for it to hopefully download before timing out yet again. I loved killing monsters, just loved it. I loved playing the mods. And I knew it was a fantasy game. And at that time, I was a woman in my 30s. Not exactly the DOOM II crowd, but there was something just *satisfying* in eviscerating various types of demons on Mars with my chaingun.

I’ve since moved on to 4x space empire type games, and I’m thinking about buying a 4x strategy game with wargame elements called Shadow Empire. The attraction is that as part of the game setup, you get to generate your own planet from various types and characteristics, but every planet is pretty much guaranteed to be a challenge in some way or another to play. The planet itself might be hostile, there are other groups on the planet, there may be alien life forms, and so on. No garden planets or space Edens. Since my foot is pretty much nailed to the floor this weekend, I might do this for some fun.

I fully believe that he’s an idiot. I take his claim that he didn’t know what was going on much less seriously.

WASHINGTON — A New Jersey man with alleged Nazi sympathies who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, tried and failed to convince a jury this week that he didn’t know the Capitol building is where Congress meets.

Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, who was in the U.S. Army Reserves when he stormed the Capitol, was convicted Friday on all five counts he faced, including a felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding.

Hale-Cusanelli, who has been in jail since Feb. 2021, did not dispute that he entered the Capitol on Jan. 6, and his defense lawyer explicitly admitted that Hale-Cusanelli engaged in criminal activity that day. Video shows Hale-Cusanelli yelling at cops outside the Capitol, entering the Capitol moments after it was breached, waving other members of the mob into the building, and attempting to grab another rioter away from police.

But Hale-Cusanelli attempted to defend himself against charges by saying he didn’t know that the Capitol was where the House and Senate sit — despite having described himself during the trial as a history buff who closely followed the electoral college certification process. He claimed in testimony on Thursday that he didn’t realize that senators and House members were in the Capitol building on Jan. 6.

Zmodem solved that broken connection problem in the 80’s, allowing resume. I was very happy when that was adopted, since I lived with my parents at the time, and there was only one phone line. It was still faster to go to the store and buy a game on disks of course.

I find it strange that simulated violence in video games is suspect but simulated violence in fanfiction about how guns will be used to defeat the bad guys is wholesome.

Or, for that matter, the relationship between reactionary excuses for state and individual violence—that person had to get hit, get beaten, get killed—and the individual shooter’s argument that they’re entitled to kill who they feel is an acceptable target.

As I said, the thing these people can’t say outright is that they’re pro-massacre, they just want exclusive rights to determine who should be massacred.

I thought of that, but that was not a massacre, just a racist being shot by a lunatic.
If as many adult Republicans were wounded or killed as in our latest school shooting, I think we’d see change.

We may see change without the need of a bloodbath. I hope David Hogg is right.

Hogg isn’t. The NRA and the GOP don’t care how many lives are taken. It’s thoughts and prayers as the standard response. And if adult Republicans were killed, the response would be to implement laws to silence anyone who criticizes Republicans, but not to limit access to guns, except by anyone who has ever expressed objections to GOP rule.

You can’t do background checks because certain kinds of people—men, fathers, husbands, authority figures—are entitled to their violence and coercion. It’s not violence, and it’s not immoral, for higher kinds of people to harm lesser kinds of people.

But when an individual granted this license does far too much violence…

…it has to be explained as the product of alien forces working upon the perpetrator, who thus has diminished responsibility; or the perpetrator is revealed to be a lesser kind of person that is guilty of borrowing the license of their betters.

Problems can only arise from outsiders and perverts, and can only be solved by punishing outsiders and perverts.

“Mental illness” is not invoked because there’s a genuine interest in psychology of violence, it’s just a stigmatized category.

Video games are not invoked because there’s a genuine fear of simulated violence as conditioning, it’s just a stigmatized category.

These aren’t good faith arguments, they’re bullshit constructed to protect the unstated core premise that people are not equal and the better kinds are entitled the violence and their coercion.

He probably is furious. It makes his propaganda task much harder. The cops are supposed to at least _pretend_ to do more than their job of keeping the minorities and peons in their places.

Not that it matters since nothing will happen to change this unless 1%er kids start dying and that would only get private armies gunning down any potential shooters outside their gated communities. See your nearest Cyberpunk game for details…

I also want Trump under virtual house arrest and unable to communicate with the outside world except through his lawyers.

I started wondering about the gun store where the killer picked up his weapons. No surprise, the authorities are familiar with them.

The gun store where the Uvalde mass shooter picked up an assault-style rifle he may have used to massacre 21 children and teachers at an elementary school was at the center of an ammunition smuggling case several years ago.

Oasis Outback sold more than 10,000 rounds of ammunition in one day to an Eagle Pass businessman who gave them to Mexican cartel operatives, court records show.

More punishment, for less infraction, for the kinds of people they dislike, is the solution to everything.

Sexual assault.
Foreign policy.
Crime.

The only thing that’s real is their caste system.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A California man pleaded guilty Friday to plotting to blow up the state Democratic Party’s headquarters in what prosecutors said was the first in a planned series of politically-motivated attacks after the defeat of former President Donald Trump.

Ian Benjamin Rogers, 46, of Napa, pleaded guilty to conspiring to destroy a building by fire or explosives, possessing an explosive device and possessing a machine gun under a plea agreement that could bring him seven to nine years in federal prison.

U.S. prosecutors in San Francisco charged Rogers and Jarrod Copeland with conspiring to attack targets they associated with Democrats after Trump’s defeat in the November 2020 presidential election.

The pair “hoped their attacks would prompt a movement,” prosecutors said when they announced the charges in July.

Copeland, 38, previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy and destruction of records.

“I want to blow up a democrat building bad,” Rogers wrote in one of the messaging apps he used to communicate with Copeland, according to the indictment. In a different message he said that after Democratic President Joe Biden was inaugurated, “we go to war.”

When I was about 10 years old we had a big ass wolf spider build a web between an oak tree and our shop wall. I could see it from the swimming pool. So I caught the biggest grasshopper I could and threw it into the web. Thought it would tear free and leave but before it could get its legs set that fuckin’ spider raced across three feet of web and started hammering away on it and spinning silk at the same time. Took about three minutes to bind the grasshopper to where it couldn’t move.

I never fucked with a spider’s web after that.

In gradeschool I was afraid of them, so I made myself keep a big one in a watch box and handle it until it wore out. Now I remember it as a probable Wolf spider.
