To be fair, that’s what they insist all Democrats do, all the time. They’re not being inconsistent here; there’s no cognitive dissonance. They know, deep down, that the Dems are telling the truth, but they can’t very well admit that, as it would break the narrative that the Democrats are the Anti-Christian party, full of nothing but liars, cheats, crooks, and worse.

The Jan. 6th Committee Starts With “Just the Facts, Ma’am”
The committee rises to the occasion. Will we?
thebulwark.com
by Bill Kristol

I am open to the possibility that the hearings will have little practical effect. Churchill’s great speeches in the 1930s made little difference in the short term.

One can’t guarantee an effect. One can’t control if one makes a difference.

What one can do is act in a way that makes one’s fellow citizens proud. That is what the House January 6th Committee did tonight. And that is what Liz Cheney in particular did tonight.

I tend to classify Dave Troy as an “Idea Puppy”. He seems to have some interesting ideas. Particularly in cutting edge things like the groups behind crypto-currency and their motivations. But I do seem to find that occasionally, he can also be a conspiracy theorist.

I do appreciate that he isn’t dialed up to ‘11’ (on a 1-10) dial like Dr Kendzior can be.

Anyway, this is an interesting observation:

In a modern industrial war, ability to produce implements of war is critical.

That is one reason that Russia is attempting to destroy Ukraine’s infra-structure. Meanwhile, the kleptocrats seem to have stolen much of Russia’s.

According to the article, both Ukraine and Russia are running out of some critical munitions. Although the Ukrainian depletion of 152mm artillery ammunition is probably more immediately critical.

re: #20 ckkatz

I read elsewhere that with the influx of NATO munitions (155mm) they now have approximately 10% more artillery power than they had when Russia invaded. They also have more tanks.

That doesn’t mean Russia doesn’t still outgun them. Their stockpiles of 152mm are pretty significant.

But the other thing Kos pointed out was that the NATO munitions, being more ‘intelligent’ - some laser guided, some self guided - means the burn rate for Ukraine is much lower than it is for Russia, with greater results. Ukraine’s still launching about 5,000 to 6,000 artillery shells per day, so if we stopped sending them shots they’d run out in about 35-40 days.

Funny you should mention that.

And his father was an associate of one of the old Italian Mafia families. Until the Russian mob took over and he transferred allegiance.

Plus Michael Cohen’s wife’s family reportedly includes a number of ranking Russian mob folks.

And, reportedly, the Trump Organization was reportedly involved in real estate development projects with Russian mob related projects in Former Soviet Union Republics.

Draw from that what you may…

IIRC, Rudy’s takedown of Cosa Nostra was in the mid-to-late 1980s, whereas Trump was doing most of his construction work during the twilight years of the Five Families in the mid-to-late 1970s/early ’80s. I forgot if it was the Gambinos or the Lucchese Family that pretty much owned concrete and construction in NYC.

Before you ever get to “sedition” the Jan 6th riots…were a riot. You’re talking to people who routinely gloat about how protests are riots and should be met with gunfire but also are enraged with the small, controlled amount of gunfire that happened.

You can’t wound them because they live in an entirely different reality than you, one where all offenses against their kind are outrages meriting disproportion violence, and their offenses against other are at minimum necessary but more often both heroic and enjoyable.

re: #21 sagehen

But Ukraine has sources of resupply. Russia does not.

I have not seen any information on the Russian manufacturing capacity for 152mm ammunition. I would assume, in theory, that it is fairly large. And that the 40-50 year old Soviet stockpiles are also fairly large.

However, 40 year old explosives, like artillery propellant can be a bit… touchy. And there was a recent report of an old artillery stockpile near Rostov exploding. Also, old ammunition has a higher rate of failure.

On the Ukrainian side… Over 90% of the Ukrainian artillery is from the Soviet era and uses Soviet/Russian ammunition. Prior to the recent Russian invasion, Ukraine had the ability to manufacture it. And it also had some war stocks. Due to the Russian attack on Ukrainian infrastructure, and the ongoing war, there may be little of either left.

Some other NATO and other countries (like India) also had stockpiles and manufacturing capacity. I understand that most market available 152mm has been purchased by Ukraine and its friends, and the current production capability is far too small to support the massive amount of artillery shells being fired.

This may be partially due to these other countries seeing the war and realizing they need to massively increase their war stocks.

The Ukrainians are trying to replace their old Russian artillery with modern NATO models. However, after years of peace there are not much currently available. NATO uses a different artillery shell (155mm).

Ukraine probably started out with about as many artillery pieces (2000) as all of NATO has. NATO has, according to the article, has supplied Ukraine with about 10% of its total artillery. And production at peacetime rates, is fairly slow.

This is what happens when one doesn’t do the scoot part of “Shoot and Scoot”.

The M777 (provided by the US) is a highly capable howitzer. But it is not designed for rapid emplacing and displacing (‘scooting’) like more recent artillery such as the French Caesar.

Mork had been sick for a week with a few really bad days, and is getting back to normal in recent days.

Both of my cats felt like they had unusually warm paws, and Mork had vomited a lot of bile three times over three days and was lethargic.

Two days ago he was still retching once in the evening but didn’t throw up for the first time. Yesterday, he was back to begging for treats a little bit and ate a lot of Churu, and today he’s aggressively begging for treats, and is his old skittish self, but he still hasn’t climbed the cat tree.

I’m hoping he’ll fully be himself tomorrow.

I took a covid test, since if I had it, they might as well, but tested negative. It’s possible that they have it and I don’t, since I don’t sniff the carpet after I come in.

We don’t actually know if the Ukrainians even have the basic base-blead extended range ammo (pat pending Gerald Bull), never mind the laser guided or GPS guided stuff.

Meanwhile the Russians do, and have been using it to some considerable success since 2014 (although they may be running low now).

And of course, quantity has a quality of its own.

Don’t want to be a downer, but:

The US sent the M777s with parts of the aiming packages removed.

France has only sent 6 CAESAR systems so far.

Other promised artillery systems don’t seem to be turning up.

Jared Kushner knew his father-in-law and boss Donald Trump had lost to Joe Biden. But that didn’t stop Kushner from trying to help his wife’s dad cling to power.

Nowadays, as Kushner seeks investments for his firm and attempts to launder his image, the former senior White House aide would like everyone in the public and the press to believe he had nothing to do with the January 6 insurrection or Team Trump’s most scandalous efforts to overthrow the American democratic order. However, there is one problem: Kushner absolutely was intimately involved with Trump’s scheme to overturn President Joe Biden’s win in the 2020 election. It’s just that he bailed on the mission early to save himself.

According to four people familiar with the matter, in the week following Election Day in early November of that year, Kushner took charge in overseeing the development of plans to keep Trump in office — Kushner just wasn’t publicly ostentatious about it in the way Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and others were. During that first week, Kushner repeatedly met with Trump and other high-ranking aides to the then-president to discuss and map out possible strategies for multi-pronged legal battles and a scorched-earth messaging war against the victorious Biden campaign, the knowledgeable sources tell Rolling Stone.

And then, saying that there has been confusion over ordering parts before, ask the parts person to describe it.

Well….it is.

COVID-19 is literally never going away. It’s widely present in animal populations, which means innumerable vectors (including household pets) and there are no signs of vaccines that offer sterilizing immunity coming out any time soon.

When all this started, I said that the “new normal” everyone was talking about was going to be radically different than what everyone was imagining, and sadly, I was right.

The “new normal” turned out to be “acceptable losses”.

So I must have some freaky long-lived hard drives here that I pulled out of my old Mac Pro, because the dates on all of them are 2008, and they’ve all been basically running non-stop the whole time.

Freaky deaky HDs.

We might have been able to basically wipe it out (like polio) if more human beings had been responsible, educated about the issues, and caring about others, instead of selfish entitled jerks.

On the other hand modern society with rapid travel to any point in the world may be the real determining factor. It may no longer be possible to pull off something like the eradication of polio.

And of course, there were the Army ones of telling someone to return with a box or grid squares and a filled out ID-10-T form.

I agree - at the very outset of the pandemic, there was a brief window of opportunity to contain the spread. Sadly, that window closed very quickly. Sure as hell didn’t help that TFG absolutely bungled the US pandemic response.

And you’re right that in the era of global mass tourism, maybe it’s almost impossible to contain a highly contagious respiratory disease. Hell, I could be Frankfurt in a few hours, and from there, I could be in Nairobi by tomorrow morning. Or Tokyo sometime tomorrow afternoon. Or Los Angeles…or any major metropolitan area.

“His body. His decision.” is what the guy did. And the dialysis clinic has the right to think the decision is the wrong one and not worth risking their other patients over.

“It’s politics” is the lame excuse for someone avoiding emotionally and intellectually dealing with consequences.

Jesse has only eaten about half a bowl of food since yesterday morning. If her appetite is no better by tomorrow, it will be off to the vets with her. She doesn’t seem to be in discomfort, and she just went outside, so I don’t think she’s getting ready to shuffle off her mortal coil.

I dunno if we talked about this, but I thought I’d mention it anyway. First of all, I’m no fan of golf, I think it’s elitist because of the entry expense. That said, my late father LOVED playing golf. He would take a client golfing and they’d golf, which is what my dad wanted to do. “When you’re golfing, you think about golf. There’s time to think about that other stuff later.”

Apparently Trump buddy Prince Salman “Bonesaw” Al-Saud had decided he’s going to try and hollow out the PGA Tour. So he’s been buying up golf stars who are quite happy to take his very very blood-spattered money.

So far, of the 48 golfers involved, the most high-profile names to join LIV Golf are Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, who were reportedly offered $200 million and $125 million, respectively, to join the new tour. Additionally, LIV Golf is offering larger prize money payouts. In May, Justin Thomas won $2.7 million as the winner of the PGA Championship, while the winner of the LIV Golf tournament, which kicked off this week, will claim $4 million, the second place winner $2.1 million, and $1.5 will go to the golfer who places third.

qz.com

While “golf” may be torn over the blood soaked Saudi tour, I certainly am not.

My brother likes to watch golf. I hope I can get him to continue watching the PGA Tour.

re: #114 steve_davis

i’m going out on a limb and assuming the next level is going to tell the appellate court where to go. How on earth is Geico on the hook for this? Is it collision/comprehensive?

The Missouri Court of Appeals is siding with a woman who won a $5.2 million award against GEICO, in a case that centers on a unique auto injury claim: the woman says she contracted a sexually transmitted disease in a Hyundai sedan whose owner was insured by GEICO.

The woman, identified in court papers as M.O., says a man, identified as M.B., infected her with human papillomavirus, or HPV, when they had unprotected sex in his 2014 Hyundai Genesis.

She says the man was negligent and didn’t tell her about his health diagnosis, despite having a throat cancer tumor that was confirmed to be positive for HPV.

GEICO had told the woman its auto insurance coverage didn’t apply because the “damages claimed did not arise out of the normal use of the vehicle.”

snip

M.O. has now won three victories in Missouri. But in April of 2021, GEICO sued both M.O. and M.B. in federal court, asking the court to rule that the insurance company isn’t liable for the woman being infected with HPV, and that it doesn’t have a duty to defend the man from her claims against him.

GEICO says the car owner’s claims for coverage should be dismissed because they’re barred by a number of legal doctrines, including “fraud, collusion, illegality, laches, and unclean hands.”

But M.O. says GEICO acted in bad faith, by refusing to defend the man who owns the car, despite multiple requests, and by refusing to settle her claim. She says the man “was insured against his personal liability arising from his negligence in actions involving his automobile,” and that makes GEICO responsible.

The federal case is set for a jury trial, which is currently slated to begin in a Kansas City courtroom in October. Since GEICO filed its federal suit more than a year ago, well over 100 docket entries have been made.

Julee Cruise, whose gorgeous collaborations with David Lynch elevated projects such as “Blue Velvet” and “Twin Peaks,” has died at 65 years old. Her husband, Edward Grinnant, revealed the news on a B-52’s Facebook page, as first reported by The Guardian. Cruise was an occasional touring member of the band, acting as Cindy Wilson’s stand-in on stretches from 1992 to 1999.

“For those of you who go back I thought you might want to know that I said goodby to my wife, Julee Cruise, today,” he wrote. “She left this realm on her own terms. No regrets. She is at peace. Having had such a varied music career she often said that the time she spent as a B filling in for Cindy while she was having a family was the happiest time of her performing life. She will be forever grateful to them. When she first stepped up to the mic with Fred and Kate she said it was like joining the Beatles. She will love them always and never forget their travels together around the world. I played her Roam during her transition. Now she will roam forever. Rest In Peace, my love, and love to you all.”

Ya, I’m missing something here, because on its face, this seems ridiculous. It almost sounds like the insured and M.O. entered an agreement to assign his bad faith claim to her, because otherwise, I don’t see how she has standing to recover on a duty to defend. Even if the bad faith claim was assigned, it still seems absurd.

While “golf” may be torn over the blood soaked Saudi tour, I certainly am not.

My brother likes to watch golf. I hope I can get him to continue watching the PGA Tour.

The PGA is banning players who sign up to play in any of the LIV tournaments.

PGA Tour Bans All LIV Golf Invitational Series Players

In a strongly worded letter from commissioner Jay Monahan, the Tour says that LIV Golf players are “suspended or otherwise no longer eligible to participate” in PGA Tour events. They will be removed from the FedEx Cup rankings following this week’s RBC Canadian Open and will not be eligible for the FedEx Cup or Presidents Cup.

My house has a laundry chute with an opening on the second floor and an end point dumping its contents on the basement floor. Our laundry room is on the first floor between the kitchen and the garage (it was built that way, back in 1967!) and the “laundry” chute does not empty out anywhere near there! So that’s weird. The house I grew up in had a laundry chute that emptied into the actual laundry room.

We sealed up the second floor opening so the kids wouldn’t throw random shit into the basement. It would be handy to have a chute that actually empties into the laundry room (like we had in the house where I grew up, which was built in 1930!) It would be way more convenient than hauling baskets up and down the stairs.

I’m not unhappy about this. The PGA has worked very hard on creating and marketing its brand and providing benefits to its members. I still think golf is elitist but I’m not gonna fault the PGA for protecting what it’s done over the decades.

Another thing I forgot to mention is that it is alleged the Saudis offered Tiger Woods $1 billion to play in their blood soaked golf tournament. He allegedly turned them down. Dunno how true that is, but still a possibly interesting data point.

It’s good. I’m not quite as ga-ga as some are (but I never hated Picard, Discovery, Lower Decks either) though I’d say I like Prodigy better. The key is they’ve gotten good scripts and some of the others have had rather weak ones. So far SNW is 6 for 6 at the “good or better” level which is something amazing considering the usual 1st season of a Star Trek series (less said about TNG prior the beard, the better).

More than seven months after the group first met in Dallas, it is heading back to the city this weekend after Protzman once again promised that JFK would reveal himself to the group, proving once and for all that he is, in fact, the reincarnation of Jesus Christ. Protzman has already checked into the Hyatt Regency, where hundreds of people gathered back in November.

“What started in Dallas ends in Dallas,” one member of a Telegram group linked to the cult wrote on Friday morning.

😂 That was such a bad movie. The earlier Alien movies are fantastic and they had to wreck it with that stinker.

What, you didn’t like La cité des enfants perdu?

re: #190 A hollow voice says Vaccinate the world!

IMHO, the article greatly overstates the “ripoff.” Yes, they sometimes start with the same concept, like the single-sexed planet (Theodore Sturgeon beat out both Trek and LeGuin), but they don’t take the ideas in the same direction. And SF is not the only genre they borrow from — compare DS9’s Duet with The Man in the Glass Cage.”

(I haven’t seen Strange New Worlds yet — I’m too worried about being disappointed by it.)

Oh, and as for the single sex planet trope, anyone who hasn’t read it owes themselves a quick read of Lois McMasters Bujold’s “Ethan of Athos”.

This is Wilson. When I got him from the shelter he was 38 lbs. According to our vet, his healthy weight is 55 lbs, so that tells you how he was doing. He is terrified of other dogs, and doesn’t love strangers right away, but he warms up to new people soon enough.

Lower Decks and Prodigy for me. Picard may be admirable, but it’s not really engrossing the way I found the earlier series.

Actually, I’d say TNG is the only older series that has a seriously weak first season (I hate the first two seasons of Enterprise so much that I won’t comment on them), and when I’ve gone back to it, I haven’t found it nearly as bad as I remembered. (That said, the lighting, costuming and makeup of the first season are part of the reason people remember it as so bad. And some of the episodes really did suck.)

In 20 years no one will care about ball golf. If you happen to hear the word “golf” it will be about disc golf.

DS9 had a very unbalanced first season. It wasn’t until mid to late second season that the show started to find itself.

re: #140 John Hughes

The main problem that there is no “check” against rogue corrupted SCOTUS decisions other than Constitutional Amendment, which by itself is an almost insurmountable barrier in today’s fractured America. Then you get reactionary follow-up decisions by the whacked-out corrupt SCOTUS and Federal Circuits that go out of their way to circumvent Amendments (like the 2nd, “…well regulated militia…” for instance) that can basically ignore or re-write clauses and ignore other corrective Amendments altogether either by scope or intent.

The American system is broken. Republicans just plain broke it on purpose, and with evil intent.

I don’t see a way to fix it. I think despite all its flaws the Parliamentary system of government has proven over time to be the best (or least bad) system of leading a large industrialized country. I hope that that whatever is coming next for us the damage and violence can be limited before a new system of government and a new Constitution can be realized. But whatever the case, we are at one of those points in history that defines the next 50-100 years.

I’m a big fan of DS9, and I really don’t find it unbalanced. In fact, I just looked at the list, and I can’t find an episode I really didn’t like (I note that Lwaxana Troi was never a favorite.)

June 10 (Reuters) - A Texas judge on Friday blocked, at least for now, Governor Greg Abbott’s directive that child protective services investigate medical providers or parents over gender transition treatments for minors.

Travis County District Judge Jan Soifer issued a temporary restraining order at the request of the gay rights organization PFLAG, which sued Abbott and the state over his February mandate to the Texas Department of Family Protective Services.

“That families will be protected from invasive, unnecessary, and unnerving investigations by DFPS simply for helping their transgender children thrive and be themselves is a very good thing,” Brian Bond, PFLAG executive director, said in a statement.

Which of her novels in that universe I think has aged the least well.

However, Bujold is generally a good read anyways.

I’ve been watching Enterprise along with the rewatch on tor.com and I’ve been finding it nowhere near as bad as in memory. The first season was very uneven as with some utter stinkers but a couple were better than average and I like what they did with the Andorians. So much promise just wasted in the end.

I am pretty sure that this is in response to Canada no longer requiring testing for entry. Just a vax record/card proving you have been both vaxed and boosted. And the the usual ArriveCan pre-entry document.

The case, which comes from the disciplinary branch of the D.C. bar, focuses on Giuliani’s efforts to push unsubstantiated fraud accusations for Donald Trump in a Pennsylvania court. The new filing accused Giuliani of violating the state’s Rules of Professional Conduct. The charge was filed with the D.C District of Columbia Court of Appeals.

Giuliani “brought a proceeding and asserted issues therein without a non-frivolous basis in law and fact for doing so,” the filing said, in which he “engaged in conduct prejudicial to the administration of justice.”

The latest action is another blow to Giuliani’s reputation as a lawyer and threatens his ability to practice in the capital in the future. It also comes roughly a year after he was suspended from practicing law in both Washington, D.C., and New York, after the New York State Bar association launched a probe into his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
