We knew this was coming. The religious fanatics have won.

The Supreme Court on Friday overturned the fundamental right to abortion established nearly 50 years ago in Roe v. Wade, a stunning reversal that could alter the nation’s political landscape and leaves states free to drastically reduce or even outlaw a procedure that abortion rights groups said is key to women’s equality and independence.

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start. Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division,” Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. wrote. “It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people’s elected representatives.”

Adoption isn’t an option when it’s an ectopic pregnancy or the fetus is stillborn and poses an immediate threat to the mother’s life.

This decision ignores my religious beliefs - that a fetus is not a person until born alive and that the mother’s life is sacrosanct. Rather, these Christian extremists have imposed their religious beliefs on everyone else.

Niece Waidhofer, a model and social media influencer, has died by suicide at age 31.

Waidhofer’s family confirmed the news on Thursday to TMZ, saying, “Sadly, Niece took her own life after a long battle with mental health issues.”

The model was discovered in her home in Houston, Texas after law enforcement completed a welfare check requested by a “concerned family member” last month, TMZ reported.

Mississippi is one of 13 states with what’s known as a trigger law. That means with Friday’s decision from the Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, abortion access is almost immediately banned across the state.

Mississippi put its version of a trigger law on the books in 2007 with a bill authored by Sen. Joey Fillingane. It’s not an automatic. It includes a certification step from the Attorney General within 10 days of the court’s decision.

“It’s no decision making authority involved in that certification process, it’s just a legality,” explained Sen. Fillingane. “She would have a period to certify that, in fact, the opinion has been issued, that it is been filed in the court clerk’s office, and that is now the law of the land.”

Fillingane says it was a backstop to avoid rushing back for a vote if the court ruled down the road.

“The idea is that we’re only in session 90 days out of the year, typically the first quarter of the year,” he explained. “And typically, the Supreme Court decisions of this magnitude are typically handed down, and the end of June… we wouldn’t be in session again for another half a year.”

There are two exceptions in that law, rape when there’s a formal charge and protection of the life of the mother. But…

“There won’t be a place for anybody to say, ‘Oh, I’m going to use the exception to go down to the clinic,’” said Fillingane, when referencing the rape exception in particular. “The clinic is not going to be there.”

“What that means for Mississippians is the nearest clinic outside of Florida if you are over 15 weeks means that you will have to travel the closest clinic will be in Granite City, Illinois,” said Michelle Colon, Executive Director and Co-Founder of SHERo Mississippi. “That is a city or suburb on the other side of the line of St. Louis.”

Groups like SHERo Mississippi are working on organizing the resources necessary for reaching those out of state locations.

She thought she had indigestion at 11pm. Couldn’t sleep. Pain at midnight, bad enough to call an ambulance. Ambulance to hospital by 12:45, and she went straight to the operating room where Dr. Ed Zabrek saved her life over the next 4 hours.
A lot of women, even wealthy conservative women, are going to die because the doctors will be legally prevented from that lifesaving surgery.

Donate to Democratic candidates, volunteer to work for Democratic and voter registration campaigns, and vote, and encourage others to vote. If you live in a blue state, lobby your representatives to pass legislation to protect reproductive rights.

My daughter enters the University of Arkansas next week. Arkansas has a trigger law, so as of this morning abortions are banned there. The reality is that all the arrangements for college are so complex that today’s decision won’t change her path. But I’m terrified.

Certainly, though, the decision will give pause to many who are at an earlier point in their planning.

The reason for this is that Dred Scott merely denied a group of people Constitutional protections, while overturning of the Roe v Wade decision actively removed established Constitutional rights to over half of the American people.

However, this is dependent on whether the fascists actually succeed in taking over the country, because if that happens, then there won’t be any historical review.

She thought she had indigestion at 11pm. Couldn’t sleep. Pain at midnight, bad enough to call an ambulance. Ambulance to hospital by 12:45, and she went straight to the operating room where Dr. Ed Zabrek saved her life over the next 4 hours.
A lot of women, even wealthy conservative women, are going to die because the doctors will be legally prevented from that lifesaving surgery.

Oh, I know it. But that’s just “bad luck” or “God’s will”, according to the Texas Leg.

I had a dear friend who suffered a ruptured ovarian cyst (a haploid ovum that just decided to start growing insider her ovary), and it damn near killed her.

I was just trying to make the point that Texas’ law was going to impact the poor more than suburban women, who still might pull the R lever this fall in spite of the “inconvenience” of that daughter/mom weekend in Denver.

As a Kentuckian, I have to disagree. Mitch has no core principles, other than money and power. He doesn’t give a rat’s ass about abortion. He only wants to do two things in the Senate: pass tax cuts for rich republican donors, and confirm Federalist Society judges to legislate from the bench. He will keep the filibuster, because it blocks progressive legislation, but is not a hindrance to the only two things he wants to do.

well, that’s not surprising if 2 out of every 100 pregnancies are ectopic, that would skew the apparent occurrence rate for IUD pregnanicies, since IUDs generally prevent implantation in the uterus but would have no impact on fallopian tubes.

They well might. It’s not like they’re acting in good faith. And I’m not sure on what basis the US Congress has the authority to require states to allow abortion access.

But what I described is the legal framework as to why today’s decision doesn’t affect either a federal law requiring access or a federal law banning access (except that the latter is now no longer prohibited by the Constitution).

imo medical autonomy is a human right not merely a constitutional one

anymore than the 14th gave certain people something they didnt inherently have before

I get your point, but the Supremacy Clause just says federal law trumps state law. It doesn’t provide an authority for federal law to regulate anything Congress wants it to. The usual route to such authority is the Interstate Commerce Clause, but that would be a real stretch—not that it hasn’t been stretched awfully far before.

Sometime in the early ’70s a good friend of my then girlfriend became pregnant. At the time abortion was illegal in Illinois. There was a well known service that flew women to a New York clinic to have the operation and return them the same day. IIRC the entire package was $300. I drove my GF and her friend to the airport and killed time in the city until they returned. It was a long day.
I expect similar services will start springing up. The states with bounty laws will be a problem, especially with modern data collection activities.

But I am reminded that when Hillary made abortion point-blank part of her statement at one of the “debates” with Trump that her statement didn’t seem to generate the political heat she may have hoped.

It all sort of died quickly in the media, because Trump is a good showman and knew his obscene carnival is what sells tickets.

This is going to be difficult going forward. If the Dems get more than 52 Senators they can try to go with a national law legalizing abortion, getting rid of the easy filibuster. Assuming the Dems hold the House and Presidency.

I don’t have a very clear crystal ball. Wish I did, but I don’t.

I don’t know how all of this will play out in states where a Senate seat is closely contested.

Having said that, I had my fill of this on Twitter well before lunch. While I do not come to you today with a suggestion on how to go forward, I don’t feel like I would be going out on a limb to say that patting yourself on that back for your foresight is not going to accomplish anything but MAYBE making you feel better for about 2 seconds.

If (and FFS, even Trump is canny enough to notice this, regardless of what he may say publicly) suburban women voters abandon the GOP, what are they gonna be left with as a voter base? I took my dog to a new place for a walk, a very long walk. I couldn’t internet and had to just get out. And still I can’t let go of when an old and dear friend from grad school came to visit us three years ago. We had agreed to not talk politics because she went from being a liberal in favor of gay and women’s rights when I first knew her to making the abolition of abortion her number one issue. Out of nowhere she announced that she voted for Trump. I blurted out, “are you fucking kidding me?” No, she said, he was the best chance she had ever seen for overturning Roe. We remained civil of course for the rest of the weekend, but I haven’t spoken to her since. I doubt she cares. I mean, she went from being proud of her alma mater, Notre Dame, to condemning it because of it’s liberal professors within a few years. (The reason she was in our area was because her niece was about to say goodbye to the secular world to enter the life of a nun somewhere in Massachusetts.)

ETA: sorry, that is just a dumb rant with no real meaning.

I used to get the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade’s newsletter. This was in the early 80s when they operated from Australia. It was a pretty good window into the mindset of right wing religion in general. You could look at it and see our present predicament coming.
There were some subtle indications that it was influenced by, if not fronting for, the anti-communist China Lobby, still headed at the time by Madame Chiang Kai-shek, with Anna Chennault as probably the number 2 figure. It was Chennault who helped the Nixon campaign subvert the 1968 election by acting as an intermediary between Nixon and Thieu regime in South Vietnam. They convinced Thieu that he would get a better deal later if he helped Nixon get elected by sabotaging the ongoing peace talks (thereby denying the Johnson administration credit for a peace deal.) The war went on for another seven years, with not thousands but millions more casualties.

We can mourn for a day. Then, it’s time for cold, focused anger and actions.

Lobbying the federal government to open up abortion clinics on Federal lands in every state with abortion restrictions that are effectively a ban. If that gets implemented and pisses off some of the reich wing states enough to make it more likely that they try to seceed, even better.

Supporting all groups doing good messaging… assuming they want to put out hard hitting videos to support Women’s right to make their own decisions on healthcare. (I note the Lincoln Project hasn’t put out any videos yet, unsurprisingly. But they’re focused on destroying Trumpism, which is still good.)

Obscuring pregnancies.

Mass buying of pregnancy tests is a good idea by all women or all who could get pregnant. Even by those who are pregnant. Because those who could get pregnant will need to test every month, and everyone else needs to provide cover for them. Not everyone has money for them though. Are there other legitimate uses of neo-natal vitamins other than by pregnant people and new mothers? (Okay, this is certainly not enough — there are other items for which cover buying is useful. I’m thinking off the top of my head as a father of a 1.5 year old).

Buying things in cold hard cash without using credit cards or loyalty cards. People can data mine and figure out that people are pregnant based on their purchases. There’s safety in numbers. And the police state isn’t yet taking photos of everyone who buys something for use in prosecution.

Deleting any period tracker apps. Or installing any period tracker apps that can guarantee they have their data in a foreign jurisdiction.

GETTING OUT THE VOTE. Vote for the most progressive Democrat who can win 52% of the vote or maybe 55% to be safe. We need to have a large enough margin to win over Republican shenanigans on election day, during registration, while challenging ballots, etc..

Power. That’s it. This doesn’t end with women (as noted in Thomas’s opinion that the court needs to revisit such cases as Lawrence and Obergefell).

The Libertarian Party is no different, as their monarchist wing, the Von Mises Institute, have taken over the national caucus this month.

The bullshyte proposed in Ohio about “re-implanting” ectopic pregnancies, and all the hot takes that conservatives don’t understand human anatomy miss the point. Maybe some don’t understand, but the majority are quite happy to use a lie if that’s what it takes to grasp more power. They don’t care about the truth, they care about power.

I am under no illusions that the Fascist Party is not going to come after me as an atheist. The National Christians (Nat-Cs) want me dead. I know this. They get cover from Radical Centrists.

As of now, Nebraska remains a place out-of-state Democrats ignore, and a place where in-state Democrats fought off an abortion ban in a special legislative session several months ago. We remain a Red state where abortion access is legal though the second trimester.

Our state’s First Lady Suzanne Shore has endorsed the Democratic candidate for the special election in NE-1, state senator Patty Pansing-Brooks. Outside of Nebraska, I imagine Democrats haven’t heard of either of these women. My wingnut governor’s own wife endorsed the Democratic candidate.

Polling is thin in Nebraska (again because we mostly get ignored), but the race in NE-1 seems too close to call at the moment. It is not enough to hold on to Blue states, Democrats have to quit ignoring the Red states which have not yet stripped rights.. Don Bacon in NE-2 has a real chance of being turfed out in the General Election.

just looked at the new stuff coming to netflix and my reaction is still “I’m not paying 10 bucks for this shit.” They really need to get it together. For 10 bucks, HBOMax is giving me enormously better quality. I’m paying Apple 5 bucks, and they’ve given me a couple pretty decent tom hanks flicks and a couple of the better sf/space opera series I’ve seen in a long while.
