LYRICS:

I just want some girl to love me back
Tell me I’m her only
And take away the lonely
This deep love in my heart
Can’t got to waste
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get loved back by a girl

I just want some girl to talk to me
And tell me that I’m different
Or say that I’m same
I don’t care what she thinks
Just think of me
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get talked to by a girl

This is what I want
This is what I need
If I ask real nice
Will you give her to me
If I just say please
This is what I need
But if I can’t have that
Well then at least

I just want some girl to look my way
And see that I am better than the others
That I matter
In her life I want to be a friend
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get noticed by a girl

In this great world
We just plan to live
But you can’t plan love
Love’s from above

And if I do have a choice
I’ll just put one foot in front of the other
I’ll say one word after another
In my voice
If I have a choice

I just want some girl beneath my feet
To tell me I’m her king
And then beg me for a ring
And I want her to be afraid of me
And think that I might leave her
And that I will not believe her

When she says that she loves
and cares for me
Cause if I won’t get to meet God
And I won’t get to be a god
Then at least God let me get worshipped by a girl

In this great world
We just plan to live
But you can’t plan love
Love’s from above

This is what I want
This is what I need
If I ask real nice
Will you give her to me
If I just say please
This is what I need
But if I can’t have that
Well then at least
This is what I want
This is what I say
And this is what I pray

Pro-rights people need to stop comparing these rulings to Islam.

Saudi Arabia now has more liberal abortion laws than some of our states. This is Christianity. Even liberal Christians are quite happy to blame “the brown people” for what their co-religionists do.

Biden should at least say expanding the court would be the solution but it cannot happen without a significant majority of Dems elected to Congress, with Sinema and Manchin replaced. People need to know what to do. The average American just doesn’t know these things.

They just don’t seem to get it:

We’ve got a good working definition of human death. No functioning forebrain, no human.

Why isn’t this a definition of human life?

Answer:

It may well be that a 22-week babbie, with a 28% chance of surviving outside of the womb, might not have the definition of a functioning forebrain. That definition is in dispute. Most of the babies who survive being born at 22-weeks are fundamentally disabled.

Expanding the court when you are disagreeing with a ruling is not a winning response to Mr & Mrs America.

Sucks, but there are so many afraid of radicalization.

Biden’s view on that might change if the midterms go right, but telegraphing a radical move before the midterms, that’s only possible if they go right, to try to ease people’s minds would be counterproductive.

He’s made it clear that this is unacceptable and that the protections must be made law by Congress.

Republicans are shameless hypocrites, so they get away with packing the Court while vociferously denouncing court packing, and the media only reports what they say. This is also how they get to be perceived as the “party of fiscal responsibility.”

Does anyone honestly believe that Dems giving Biden the boot is going to inspire confidence or give the media reason to let up on Dems at all? Since when has trying to forcibly push an incumbent pres out of the light ever worked out for the incumbent party. You’d have to go back to before presidential term limits existed to see where even voluntary stepping aside worked out for the incumbent party in the presidential election. And yes, that mainly rests on Johnson’s problems with the Vietnam war, but does anyone honestly believe that, no matter how much the media has the knives out for Biden, that they will actually let up if Biden is forcibly kicked out, or even voluntarily opts out?

I’ve seen some dangerous talk, from Los Angeles specifically, suggesting that a dozen or more protests could be started at once, then “Direct Action” taken once the cops were distracted. I am not sure who these people are, but police were casually referred to as “pigs,” the anarchist expression “propaganda of the deed” was prominently mentioned, and pictures of guillotines and burning buildings posted.
The problem with this is that, cops or not, there will be thousands of Rittenhouse wannabes milling around just looking for an excuse to shoot. Don’t give it to them. Performative violence has always been bullshit. This time around it could get you killed. As I said earlier, fight but fight smart.

I always had the idea of Joe as a one term guy because of his age and how hard that job is. His name will (wrongly) be attached to all things economically bad. IMHO no sitting President can expect to keep his job in the face of runaway inflation. So now that’s two good reasons to run a different person. Perhaps against Trump. Ugh.

By the way, I was saying he should opt out. I don’t think he should get “the boot”.

Again, considering the highly coordinated effort between the GOP, a complicit media, and apparently a significant left flank to give all blame for everything, including this ruling, to the Dems and only the Dems, I can’t see any scenario where the Dems will get credit for changing horses midstream, and we’ve seen all too well just how any prominent Dem can get turned into Public Enemy #1 the moment it becomes convenient. This idea that getting Biden out of the spotlight to save us from attacks regarding the economy or anything else is simply not supported by past trends.

Charles, I understand your frustration, but really, the Supreme Court can’t do any more damage until after the midterm elections.

What Biden needs to do is win the midterms in both the Senate and the House. He needs to use the killing of Roe to expand the Dems power in both houses of Congress.

That’s the key to making the R’s yesterdays party, who bit off more than they could chew.

If they had the power back in the early 70’s to keep Roe from happening, they would have been King Bees in the legal world. But they didn’t. And it happened. And they worked for Fifty Fucking Years to get to the point to where they could kill Roe.

But when they finally got the juice to do it, a large majority of the polity supported the basics of Roe. They killed it 50 years too late, and they are going to get creamed in the midterms if the Dems play their cards just right.

(CNN)Ali Alexander, the leader of the “Stop the Steal” group who helped to organize rallies before the US Capitol attack, testified to a federal grand jury on Friday in the Justice Department’s sweeping investigation into the January 6, 2021, insurrection.

CNN spotted Alexander entering and exiting the federal courthouse in Washington, DC, where a federal grand jury that has heard January 6-related matters meets. He spent about four hours at the courthouse on Friday behind closed doors.
Alexander did not respond to questions at the courthouse. He has not been charged with any crime.
He acknowledged his testimony in a social media post on Friday. “Today a DC grand jury brought me in under subpoena and the threat of imprisonment. I told them I committed no crimes and observed no one committing any crimes during the 2020 Election and January 6th,” he wrote on the Trump-founded site Truth Social.

re: #78 austin_blue

I’m just quickly getting exhausted by the second-hand nihilism I feel because it’s starting to feel like pulling teeth to keep people focused on Republicans as the root cause of all of this. Everywhere, even here, seems to be falling under the lure of blaming Dems for all the ills of the world as if the GOP has no agency while they keep reaping the benefits of it all. The media has been all in on refusing to lay blame where it should (because THAT would make them ‘partisan’, so both sideing things so the guilty party looks better, that’s absolutely not partisan at all!), and the left flank has been increasingly trying to scream about denying Dems the vote, because if the Dem party collapses, that’ll magically bring about the progressive utopia once a ‘real’ leftist party emerges from the ashes (instead of, you know, just having ashes in the scorched earth left). Meanwhile, the GOP skates because they’re never held to account. Because ‘that’s just how they are, so it’s pointless to get angry at them’. Meanwhile, we persist with circular firing squads meant to ensure that we get nowhere. And I’m just feeling the energy ebb from me because I’m seeing the same trap that gave us Trump in 2016 about to kick us in the stomach in ‘22 and ‘24, because Dems are never ‘good enough’, thus they’re all to blame.

Look, I get Dems can be tone deaf. But considering the minefield they have to keep walking along with shitty media meddling and narratives, and a perfect split Senate that people keep acting like is a Green Lantern ring to make miracles with, I’m far more forgiving of them being tone deaf as long as they’re trying to point in the right direction, especially when the GOP is hitting Reverse on the entire country in hopes of bringing us back to 1861.

Slacktivist at Patheos (Fred Clark, a Christian), describing how anti-abortion positions were the stalking horse for Christian segregationists.

Evangelicals were a non-voting bloc (the idea of “we live in the world but are members of the Kingdom of God”).

In 1973, the flagship Evangelical magazine Christianity Today put out an entire issue praising Roe and defining abortion and contraception as a Catholic problem and un-Biblical.

The ‘biblical view’ that’s younger than the Happy Meal

I wish I was as confident as you, but at the end of the day if inflation and gas prices are still high I think Americans are still more likely to just blame the party in power, and the price of gas and groceries is more consequential to most people day to day than abortion rights. Hope I am wrong, but it isn’t something I would be willing to bet on.

The disorienting thing is that I have no memory of the seconds immediately prior to blacking out.
I remember making the decision to get up off the bed in my daughter’s old room to head toward the bathroom, but I have no memory of reaching the bedroom doorframe.

My next memory is the sensations of impact and being spawled on the floor in the hall.

If it’s all about Roe, and it gets out the vote, we win and can initiate a counterforce to what Trump accomplished in four disastrous years for this country. We can fix it pretty quickly with Legislation.

I only hope that after the midterms we can look back and say the Democrats fought back and shocked the conventional wisdom by expanding their congressional majorities. Then next year they do something with it. People will have to believe their votes can make a difference for that to happen.

re: #90 Charles Johnson

My take has been, for a very long time now, that the Democratic Party has long been defined by “we’re not Republicans”.

Contrary to the claims of right-wing demagogues, there is no strong ideology that has rallied a high percentage of self-declaring Democratic party members.

This is why Pelosi and others raise money for Dems who may not agree with other Dems on various issues.

It’s also why purity ponies find the Democratic party easy pickings: because it’s a big tent (contra the GOP) one can always find a Dem who doesn’t agree with some stance on some issue.

And then we have religion.

It is true that part of the Democratic Party’s composition since the early 1960’s has been black church members. This has always been a fine line to walk, and why so many Dem leaders are not champions of, say, Voltaire (or other historical anti-religious figure heads.)

I switched from being independent to registered Dem when I saw what was happening when Obama was nominated.

It was clear that Obama had uncovered latent racism in many corners of this country.

But here’s the thing: If my ideology is that of a materialist socialist (which it sort of is), there is no way I will have any chance of getting the majority of the Democratic Party to make that the declared ideology of the party.

It’s just not going to happen (in my lifetime.)

The recent Supreme Court decision has me sick at my stomach.

You cannot image all the potential problems this is going to cause. This is something the ob/gyns at my hospital have been taking about since the ruling was leaked. We have decided no matter what the law says, we will do what is right for the patient.

The tricky part will be exactly how the laws are worded. One state was looking at using a heat beat as the point of no return. Well, I have seen ectopic pregnancies have a heart beat. Am I just suppose to wait until the tube ruptures before operating? My patient could die. That is completely unacceptable. I’m going to operate and will take the risk of being arrested later.

I’m going to take an Ativan for my nerves and go to bed.

I only hope that after the midterms we can look back and say the Democrats fought back and shocked the conventional wisdom by expanding their congressional majorities. Then next year they do something with it. People will have to believe their votes can make a difference for that to happen.

Josh Marshall describes how to make this happen:

Democrats Can Win This Fall if They Make One Key Promise
[…]
To make the 2022 elections a referendum on Roe, Democrats have to put protecting Roe and abortion rights on the table.

Here’s one way to do that: get clear public commitments from every Senate Democrat (and candidate for Senate) not only to vote for the Roe bill in January 2023 but also to change the filibuster rules to ensure that a majority vote would actually pass the bill and send it to the White House for the president’s signature.
[…]
If my math is right and there are 48 Senate Democrats ready to make that pledge, they need two additional Democratic senators in the next Congress. And that is the party’s message that makes the 2022 midterms a referendum on Roe: “Give us the House and two more senators, and we will make Roe law in January 2023.”
[…]
Some senators may resist at first. And that wouldn’t be surprising. Politicians seldom see any advantage to committing themselves in advance or reducing their room for maneuver. It’s always safer to keep your options open and be as general as possible until the final moment. That’s why assembling a clear public list of commitments is critical. Once the list gets down to a handful of hesitaters, the pressure from Democrats nationwide, focused on those members, will be overwhelming. If there are real holdouts, they’ll fold in short order.

You don’t need to wait on Nancy Pelosi or Chuck Schumer or President Biden. You can get the ball rolling by calling up your Democratic senator today.

And that’s it for me on the day of the most important legal decision since I was 16 years old, which shows how much the most Conservative branch of the Catholic Church controls American law.

You know, in 1928, Texas voted for a Republican Presidential candidate, Herbert Hoover, for the first time since there was a Republican Party. They wouldn’t do it again until 1980.

Why? Because Hoover’s opponent was a Catholic named Al Smith.

So for 120 years, the State of Texas voted for exactly one Republican Presidential candidate, and that was only because he was running against a Mackerel Snapper from New York.

Nowadays, Texas just loves loves loves them some Catholic Opus Dei judges because they can’t get any Evangelical Protestants onto the Court. The only judge who claims to be Protestant is Gorsuch, but he was raised Catholic and has switched to Episcopalianism, which is Catholicism with all the bells and whistles but without the guilt.

It’s a very odd thing, but the fact is that the most conservative faction of the Roman Catholic Church now controls how American Law is interpreted.

My dad called yesterday to tell me that my mom had tested positive for covid. She said it felt like a cold. I pressed him to try to get her seen about. They had been going through a low cost clinic, and when they called, all they got was an answering machine. When my wife told me that, I called and pressed him to get her seen about because they are still within the window for the drugs. He tried calling a minor emergency clinic and a hospital emergency room, but were told that, because Republicans let the funding expire, they no longer do the testing or issue drugs. My parents are going to have to try tomorrow morning and hopefully get in touch of her primary care doctor. If they have to wait until Monday, they will be out of the window for the drugs.

My parents have gotten lax on taking care around people. They’ve had one booster, but have stopped wearing masks. They don’t go to a lot of places, but they do go to church.

Like everybody else here, I have been sickened at the SCOTUS’ open and unrestrained grabbing of power contrary to our democratic and legal traditions.

I respect and appreciate the thoughts and views on Joe Biden and how well he is doing his job.

I guess that I have a bit of a contrarian viewpoint on Joe Biden. As always, ymmv.

I view Biden as having a very specific role in our nation, as the representative of the Constitutional Institutions of our government, particularly those of the Executive Branch.

In my view, he is doing a fairly good job.

Particularly in light of all the people and groups trying to destabilize our democracy. That includes the gqp, the anarcho-capitalists, the libertarians, authoritarians, generally discontent, and foreign enemies such as Putin. (I guaran-fricking-tee that Putin and his minions are very ‌involved.)

I think that Biden has stabilized much of the Executive Branch and the Nation. (Look at the J6 hearings to see what disarray everything was in under tfg.) Under the rules of our democracy, he has less control over the Legislative and Judicial Branches.

Regarding the bully pulpit. I think that he has been using it, but very carefully. And in great contrast to tfg’s misuse.

About specific issues that concern us, I recall the words of Franklin Delano Roosevelt to community leaders (to paraphrase) “Your job is to make me support those issues”.

I do agree that if we want a strongman, then we will indeed need to find a very different person.

I have two thoughts regarding the wish for a strong-man or authoritarian or a dictator to fix everything for us.

First, in our democracy, the folks responsible for fixing the problems are us. In our system of government, power devolves to and originates from the people. And that is us. Fixing it is our job. And we cannot pawn it off on anybody else. Sucks… I agree. But there we are. As Pogo said “We has met the enemy. And he is us.”

Second, we just tried a strongman wannabe, tfg. We barely escaped his misrule. And only because he was completely incompetent and too psychologically damaged to hire and use competent help. The next time we seek a strongman, we may find that next one is more competent. And then we we will be in real big trouble.

In summary, to quote Jim Wright “We need to be better citizens if we want a better government”.

And as stated above, ymmv.

In the long run? Perhaps. Perhaps not. But the civil war that went with the breakup of Yugoslavia was a very brutal war and would be devastating to much of the former United States. And if it devolves into religious based ethnic cleansing and genocide?

No, I don’t think balkanization would be a good thing.

Like I said yesterday, being nice gets you nowhere.

And we play too nice. Let’s realize that there’s no compromise to be found with the right-wingers and it is useless to appeal to the better angels of their nature because they don’t have one.

This is a fight to the bitter end. It’s Manichean, and it ends in either victory or defeat for one side or the other. And if we want to win, then we’d better be prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve that victory.

Yup the US has often been plagued with the issue of regionalism.

Just before the Civil War there was a lot of regionalism in the “Old Northwest” of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. The problem was that the rest of the regions in the Federal Government were unwilling to help build canals and other transportation projects to connect the region to the rest of the country. As a newly developing region the area did not have the resources to do it themselves.

It took a lot of careful maneuvering by some excellent politicians to keep the Old Northwest in the Union and out of the separatist camp.

Yes! It is fascinating to look at post-Civil War national voting maps. In many of them, the South would vote solid Democratic and the North solid Republican. That pattern only started to break up in the 20th Century.

On the issue of Catholicism. Many here probably do not remember that John F Kennedy, a Catholic, had to make a public pledge that he would follow the best interests of the United States and not be subordinate to the Pope. This was in 1960. Not that long ago. At least for us oldsters.

*snip*

The only other Catholic [before Kennedy] to become a presidential nominee was Al Smith, the Catholic governor of New York, in the election of 1928.

“[He] lost disastrously in the midst of overt anti-Catholic campaigning,” O’Toole explains. “As soon as Smith was elected president, his opponent said [Smith] was going to build a tunnel between Rome and Washington so it would be easier for the pope to get his instructions to President Smith — preposterous of course…there were actually campaign flyers that said that that was, that was going to happen. And that was the kind of opposition that Kennedy faced when he first ran for president.”

*snip*

Kennedy couldn’t have been more pointed in response, when he spoke to a group of ministers in Houston that fall.

“I am not the Catholic candidate for president. I am the Democratic party’s candidate for president, who happens also to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my church on public matters, and the church does not speak for me,” Kennedy told Greater Houston Ministerial Association.

Three words why this won’t happen? “Pro-life Dems.” Guys like Cueller who just won the nomination for reelection this past Tuesday won’t go for it, and even if they did the leadership would be too afraid of putting them on the spot to go for it. If anything, promises to make Roe law after they allowed Manchin to very publicly block the last attempt could very well backfire for the party.

If Justice Thomas and the rest of the fascist clique really get cracking they could conceivably over-rule Lawrence, Griswold and Obergefell all by, say, the middle of October. With any luck, the result would be an unprecedented disaster for mid-term hopeful Repugs, crushed, extinguished, under an avalanche of outrage. To paraphrase a headline from the end of the Civil War, “Treason and superstition buried in the same grave.”
It goes without saying that the GOP will use lies, sabotage and violence on a massive scale to prevent this. Democrats need to be ready at every level to counter this and they need to be ready for a brass knuckle, eye gouging, gonad crushing brawl in the process.

I think it’s admirable that blue and purple states are announcing that abortion is still legal within their borders, but I don’t think they quite get that the theocratic fucknuggets pushing this effort are not going to stop at just banning it in some states and allowing it to remain legal in others. Until they can get a nationwide ban in place, whether through Congressional action or judicial fiat, they will start working in the states they do control to begin placing restrictions on the free movement of pregnant women. Do not be surprised if, between now and 2024, one or more red states have women in jail awaiting trial for violating some new law banning travel across state lines to obtain an abortion in a state where it’s still legal.

In the DonBas, the Ukrainians had a salient that connected to the towns of Lysychansk and Severodonetsk. A couple of days ago the Russian forces were finally able to push up along the Western bank/Ukrainian side of the Siverskyi Donets River. This threatened to cut off the last road out of the salient.

The Russian efforts to push the Ukrainians out of the salient had taken a month and significant casualties. The Ukrainians also took heavy casualties. But not as heavy as the Russians. Nor are the Ukrainians as short of manpower as the Russians.

So the Ukrainians finally decided to pull out of the salient. Any retreat is controlled chaos. But it sounds like the Ukrainians are managing it well.

And, I would suspect that NATO intelligence and surveillance are feeding the Ukrainians up-to-the-minute information. Probably not only on where the Russians are and what they are doing, but also where the various Ukrainian units are.

Here are some descriptions of that retreat:

Very true!

I remember reading the retreat out of Laos in 1971. (I just missed the draft for Vietnam. I turned 18 the year they discontinued it.) And I knew some people that had been in the retreat from the Chosen Reservoir in the 1950’s.

I also remember back in the bad old 1980s where we were supposed to be prepared to retreat in front of massive Warsaw Pact hordes. I always assumed that I would end up being a speed bump. No matter where they stuck me. So I wasn’t expecting a lot out of any controlled retreat

Retreat? We were told to be sure to kill 5 WP tanks before dying. That might slow them enough for REFORGER to actually work.

Of course, after the fall, we found East German army documents that said they expected us to be able to bring in 2 or 3 times as many troops as we actually could which was one reason the balloon never went up.

Heh! Anything, as long as it worked. I had two hopes.

The first being that maybe the Warsaw Pact nations’ militaries were not really interested in dying for the glory of Russia. And second, that maybe a lot of them would disperse while being busy looting.

Beyond that, I was just hoping the end would be quick and relatively painless. I figured that REFORGER might stabilize things around the Rhine. If the US reinforcements even made it into theater.

As you can see, I was the optimist of the unit.

Thus, as cancer treatment directly interferes with God’s plan for that individual human being, cancer treatments should be prohibited.

End times lunacy really ramped up after 1970 and was at a fever pitch in the 80’s and 90’s.

When the end did not come in 2000, the end times nuts really had no where to go.

Tied to the formation of the modern state of Israel, apocalypticism ran wild in American fundamentalist circles.

If you look at the curve from Gallup (posted by the Scottish professor), you can see the nose-dive after 2000.

Few people want to admit publicly they were duped. but many Americans were duped by the end-times preachers.

Instead of owning up to it, these marks just sort of slinked off to the side.

I’d bet $5 that’s one of the books David Seltzer read when he was writing the screenplay for The Omen (along with “The Late Great Planet Earth”).

Seltzer incorporated a lot of Dispensationalist ideas into his screenplay and turned what were, up until then, little more than fringe Christian eschatological notions and made them mainstream thanks to the success of that film; I’d argue that The Omen probably had more lasting cultural influence than The Exorcist.

The very idea that the Antichrist was the literal son of Satan comes from The Omen….anyone who’s familiar with Christian eschatology knows that the Antichrist is simply a follower of Satan - but Seltzer kicked that idea up a notch for dramatic license. He had to explain the whole idea of 666 through exposition because mainstream audiences at that particular point in time (1976) weren’t all that familiar with the concept of the number of the beast (or the mark of the beast).

And the “daggers of Meggido”…totally made up by Seltzer. In fact, the very idea that you’d need to kill the Antichrist runs counter to Revelations, something you’d think the film’s religious consultant (an Evangelical Christian) would’ve picked up on, but completely failed to notice.

I don’t know how they’re doing right now, but I wish them ill.

People who actually read and study the Bible tell me that the notion of planes falling from the sky when all the True Believers are caught up in the Great Snatch is is just Bad Theology.

But the megachurch grifters are more interested into packing seats and filling donation baskets than in teaching Gospel, so they lean on the sensationalism of Fire and Brimstone.

The very idea of the rapture isn’t found in historical Christianity; it’s a relatively recent doctrine of American Evangelical Protestantism and their sectarian premillennial dispensationalist eschatology. But they’re extraordinarily good at popularizing their ideas and spreading them throughout popular culture.

On the subject of The Omen versus The Exorcist, by any metric, The Exorcist is a far better film (I’d say it’s the gold standard of the supernatural horror genre). But whereas most people would tell you that the Antichrist is the son of Satan (thanks to The Omen) how many people can name the demon that possessed Regan MacNeil off the top of their heads?

And the answer to the latter question is not “the devil”.

He may have a point. The death of Savita Halappanavar, combined with the scandal of the Irish Catholic pedophile priests, certainly did it over there. I know very little about the local mega-churches. The only one I know anything about in the Northern Virginia area is the massive McLean Bible Church. It basically provided a lot of community services to what I concluded were lost and/or insecure people. Including singles and support groups. From other singles groups, I knew a few that went there. I have been out of that scene for some time and do not know how thy are doing now.

Tearing itself apart, apparently, accusing the pastor, David Platt of being “woke” and teaching CRT. It’s quite the mess. Why yes, it ended up in court. Here’s an article from May: washingtonpost.com

I remember reading it in the eighth grade (I already had rather refined literary tastes by then) and just asking out loud what kind of hideous bullshit it was.

One work of religious fiction that influenced me (long before The Da Vinci Code) was Irving Wallace’s The Word, about the supposed discovery of a “Fifth Gospel” that is supposed to turn Christianity on its head (and later turns out to be a fake).
It goes into some detail about the history of the New Testament and the early Church.

re: #175 Dr Lizardo

I’d bet $5 that’s one of the books David Seltzer read when he was writing the screenplay for The Omen (along with “The Late Great Planet Earth”).

Seltzer incorporated a lot of Dispensationalist ideas into his screenplay and turned what were, up until them, little more than fringe Christian eschatological notions and made them mainstream thanks to the success of that film; I’d argue that The Omen probably had more lasting cultural influence than The Exorcist.

Yeah, but this assumes that all Evangelicals are of one belief on the end times. They’re not. They probably got some conservative Presbyterian who knew nothing about the elaborate scenarios from C.I. Scofield and his successors. You’ve got the pre-tribulation rapture people, the guys who were convinced Jesus was coming back to lift everyone up into the clouds and then there’d be seven years of wrath. Then there were the mid-trib rapture people, where there’d be 3.5 years of wrath and then the rapture, then the post-trib rapture people, where Jesus would return and the saints would be raptured to meet him in the air. And then there are the dominionists who think they have to purify the USA (less the world) before Jesus comes back so they can present us as a gift to Jesus. (Makes middle finger hand gestures, that’s what I think of this *gift* business.)

And all of this whipped out of virtually nothing. The whole rapture business comes out of 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, where Paul was writing to people whose friends/family had died before the very soon return of Jesus, trying to reassure them that why yes, their dead friends and family would meet them with Jesus at Jesus’ return. Paul told his Thessalonian readers to expect Jesus’ very soon return, but the reality is that we’re still waiting. (Or, as the Lutheran pastor once told me, Jesus’ return will be at our deaths.)

My point is that there are as many views of the end of times as there are people, and I bet The Omen’s religion specialist was simply not familiar with end times prophecy, at least not as familiar as say a teenager like me growing up in the South in the 1970s.

The idea that became The Omen apparently originated from an ad exec and Evangelical Christian named Robert Munger.

The story goes that Munger had read “The Late Great Planet Earth”, which got him thinking, and he mentioned the idea, “Hey, what if the Antichrist was here among us right now and nobody knew it?” to his friend Harvey Bernhard, then Harvey turned around and commissioned David Seltzer to come up with a screenplay from that idea - and Seltzer started reading out-there Christian literature available at the time and mixed and matched various fringe eschatological ideas to flesh out the screenplay.

Bernhard served as Producer for The Omen and Munger got credited as the film’s “religious consultant”. Harvey Bernhard was a frequent collaborator with Richard Donner, who directed the film.

Well done, GOP, we’re North Korea.

North Korea Forbids Doctors To Perform Abortions, Implant Birth Control Devices (Radio Free Asia, October 14, 2015)

North Korean authorities have issued a directive banning medical professionals from performing birth control procedures and abortions in an effort to reverse the isolated country’s falling birth rate, sources inside said.

“This central policy was announced at a lecture for health care workers on Oct. 8,” a source in the country’s northern Yanggang province told RFA’s Korean Service. “The new policy says that birth control procedures are illegal, and gynecologists who implant birth control devices in their patients will be punished by law.”

The directive also forbids gynecologists to perform abortions, although it did not indicate the penalty for doing so, he said.

The source surmised that medical doctors would have to pay a large fine if they are caught performing abortions.

If doctors who are not gynecologists perform such procedures, they will be sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison, he said. (more)

The red states are to be completely demilitarized. That includes conventional and nuclear weapons, which will be transferred to the blue states. They will no longer be allowed to use the US Dollar as their currency. Etc., etc.

With the exception of Texas, which is doing OK (for now, at least) the overwhelming majority of red state America would turn into Somalia in less than one year without economic assistance from the blue states.

Good Omens, on the other hand, was a great book - the series was okay, it was just trying to hard to be hip, when one of the major tropes of Douglas Adams’ work is the notion of everyday un-hip bumblers who find themselves thrust into world-shaking events.

Since Douglas Adams didn’t write Good Omens, it makes sense that Gaiman and Pratchett, who did write the book, while influenced by Adams, would deviate from Adams’ major tropes, especially when Gaiman came around to doing the video adaptation.

Once these cases are done away with by judicial edict Thomas’ role will be done and he is largely expendable to the theocrats. He will be asked to step down by Republicans so they can replace him with someone young and full of bitter hatred who will overthrow Loving vs. Virginia and really get down to brass tacks about what this is all about.

Clarence Thomas, in his diatribe masked as a concurrent statement yesterday left out Loving Vs. Virginia regarding cases to be overruled. Wonder why? Interracial marriage affects him personally, so he cares about this one. He doesn’t care one bit about anyone else. This is apparent to everyone by now.

That’s what the Democrats have been talking about doing. The concern is that the court will strike down whatever they do. Doesn’t that very plainly state that “JUST BECAUSE WE SPELLED OUT CERTAIN THINGS DOESN’T MEAN THAT THESE ARE ALL THE THINGS”?

Since the courts have thrown out Roe maybe we should consider codifying it. I know it will be a long and hard road but it will be worth it in the long run. That and quite a few more people will be involved in the legal and voting process so that too will be a win.

If we can a filibuster-proof majority we can start pushing through legislation and expand SCOTUS too. We have to do this over the next two election cycles (this year and 2024). An interesting phenomenon is that blue cities in red states will refuse to prosecute abortion “crimes”, so they will become havens for the black market sale of abortion pills. I assume at least some red states will create abortion crime divisions of their state police, and authorize states AGs to prosecute abortion crimes in response. A good solution would be for the FDA to make misoprostol and/or mifepristone OTC drugs since they have uses other than abortion. Red states wouldn’t be able to prosecute anyone for prescribing them, and it would force them to pass unpopular laws to prosecute women for inducing their own abortions if they are determined to stop it.

Fuck him.

IANAL, but wasn’t the Loving decision based on other criteria and so would not fall automatically under the umbrella of cases Thomas wants to reconsider?

This court would definitely throw it out. The VRA was established legislation, approved by overwhelming bipartisan majorities (before the GOP completely devolved) and that didn’t stop Roberts from overturning it.

There are only 2 ways to protect women’s rights: a Constitutional amendment which will never happen or a court with a majority of liberals. And the only likely way to get the majority we need is for lightning to strike down at least 2 of the GOP judges, the sooner the better.

So to throw cold water on my idea to make abortion pills OTC; its not going to happen anytime soon, if ever.

Neither Biden nor Becerra addressed making the pills available over-the-counter, a process that could take years, medical and regulatory experts told Reuters. They said drugmakers would need to conduct studies showing directions on the product’s packaging would enable a consumer to safely use it without professional medical guidance.

The two companies that make the pill for the U.S. market have shown no interest in the process. Should they do, any U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval would become a target for lawsuits from abortion opponents that could delay implementation for years, experts said.

“The hard part that I see is getting the evidence or the agreement that no prescriber is needed at all,” said Susan Wood, a former Assistant Commissioner for Women’s Health at the FDA.

“I personally don’t see it happening in the next couple of years,” said Wood, now director of George Washington University’s Jacobs Institute of Women’s Health.

The essential element of ‘show up every time’ that the Republicans mastered — focus on the local races (especially the school board). To respond, the local party will need more help from national: Find and FUND candidates for every single open slot. Then keep reminding voters to check off every single office on the ballot, not just the top few.

Far easier said than done, of course. The ‘find and fund’ part will be the kicker, when armed and organized thugs are targeting the candidates’ families.
