re: #347 Teddy’s Person

Does DeSantis have the “charisma” or maybe stage presence is a better way to put it (i.e., obnoxious bully who punches down) that seems to draw MAGAs to Trump? I’ve paid attention to his policies and read about things he’s said but never have actually watched a public speech or presser. My impression is that he is as “charismatic” as Scott Walker (who always looks like he just woke up from a nap).

It’s not charisma, I don’t think. It’s the ability to get it across that you are ready to do all the horrible things your audience thinks about doing, and flaunt it shamelessly in public.

Minnesota is going to wind up with “warriors” posted across the borders on every side as forced-birth states try to inspect cars for women crossing into MN. It’ll be easier to get in from Canada.

I honestly think that after the midterm elections in MN, both the house and senate will be D and Walz will be confirmed as the re-elected governor by 8:03 pm.

Oh, if we could get the MN Senate to be D, that would be glorious. I’ve had enough of shitty people like Dr. Scott Jensen running their mouths about their latest performative fuckery.

I may have to vote as a republican during MN’s open primaries this year. I’ve done it once before in the 80’s when there was no drama on the D side but some dangerous Rs on the other side.

I will be in the local primary here. We have three republicans and no democrats running for Sherriff. The incumbent is semi-sane; the challengers are not. I’ll vote for the devil I know.

I’m soothing myself by watching airplane disaster videos on YouTube. Yeah some planes crash and everybody dies, but more frequently than not the plane lands safely.

I voted for a couple (good) republicans in my 50 years of voting. Not this decade. I know the year I voted in the R primary a lot of other Ds did it too. Some of the downticket R offices got ratfucked pretty bad with unelectable candidates. 😏

I made the mistake of voting for an R state senator in the 2020 election. Never again. I will never vote for another Republican again, ever, unless we go through a second Southern Strategy and the Republicans become liberals.

Today is my first full day of being 68. Birthdays haven’t been the same since I discovered that I was born at 11:40 PM. It feels like cheating to celebrate during the day, and it’s kind of dumb to feel like shouting “It’s my birthday!” at 20 minutes before midnight.

That’s why I put “charism” in quotes. It’s not quite the right word, but I couldn’t think of anything else.

I can’t imagine this happening, given where I live, but I can imagine voting in a republican primary (if we ever put an end to the open primary). Think of it as deciding who you want as the enemy, not voting for someone.

Also too, the morning after pill is one little pill. A chemical abortion is one to nine. Imagine trying to stop them from going through the mail (which is federal, not state, anyway, so she probably can’t intercept and search the mail).

Just returned from a pro-choice rally in downtown Appleton (WI) a bit ago.

Good crowd, very orderly and motivated with no asinine counter protesters other than a pair of attention seeking singles looking for their moment of infamy.

Let’s hope we are able to somehow turn back the tide and correct this travesty of a SCOTUS ruling. Until that day comes, I’m going to keep pushing for people to

Stand up!
Speak out!
Fight back!
Vote!

Rally pictures behind the tag for anyone who is interested.

That isn’t something that is really doable; you can’t prohibit women from leaving a state, and you would create hours long backlogs if you try to interrogate every woman going to Minnesota in a car. Even the most ardent forced birther wouldn’t tolerate being effectively trapped in Bum Fuck North Dakota. Its more practicable to turn their neighbors into bounty hunters.

My sister lives just south of Appleton and says that the local chatter is very pro-ban. She works for a rich conservative boss who has rich conservative clients and she hates it. I suggested to use the comeback line “Wait ‘til you realize you’re the dog that caught the car”. I’ll have to find out if she knew about the rally. Glad to here you (mostly) weren’t hassled.

Many years ago I went to present a paper at a regional conference in Milwaukee. I stayed with cousins in Whitefish Bay. As soon as I pulled into town in my old Ford Ranger a cop started tailing me. Things are different today of course. GOP Senators made it clear recently that they will not vote for any Justice nominated by a Democratic President, no matter how well qualified. If the GOP regains control of the Senate in the midterms, and a vacancy opens on the Court next year, McConnell will absolutely hold that vacancy open until 2025.

It’s Hillary’s Moment

June 26, 2022 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard 460 Comments

John Ellis: “The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade creates the opening for Hillary Clinton to get out of stealth mode and start down the path toward declaring her candidacy for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.”

“Say what you will about Hilary Clinton, she is formidable and ‘up to it.’ And whatever else she might be, whatever baggage she carries, she is an enduring champion of women’s rights.”

“What the reversal of Roe v. Wade has put front and center, smack dab in the middle of the town square of American politics, is women’s rights. Justice Alito’s opinion has unleashed the fury of millions of American women, vast numbers of whom see it as judicial activism run amok and a brazen, unilateral attempt to reverse decades of hard-earned progress. That fury has yet to find its focus. Because it needs to, it will. I guarantee you that rallying behind Joe Biden will not be where it makes landfall.”

Yes and parents who were deemed “unfit” because of alcoholism, poverty, and “immorality” (out of wedlock mothers) had their children taken away and brought up in the workhouse.

The most expensive nonpresidential race ever features a radical right candidate in the GOP Illinois primary whose platform basically amounts to “Chicago can go to Hell” (he literally proposed expelling Chicago from the state), who is likely to defeat a moderate black Republican mayor the establishment thought had a good chance of winning in the general. The Democratic candidate, Governor Pritzker, has spent lavishly on negative campaigning to tear down the moderate, Richard Irvin, and promote the fascist, Darren Bailey, as “too conservative” for Illinois. Bailey basically wants to be Governor of Southern Illinois and just wants to purge the Illinois GOP of non-fascists.

re: #133 William Lewis

Does anyone know of a good resource for someone who wants to learn how to make decent bread? My attempts have always come out horrible, but I’d like to try again. I can make a very good pot of soup and I’d like to have homemade bread with it.

Overlord? Perhaps some tips on the right flour and technique?

My suggestion is to find a decent bread machine and use a box mix. It sounds like cheating, and maybe it is, but it makes bread easy and it’s really not bad.

Last time I tried one it fell flatter than a pancake with the consistency of a brick…

I think it’s safe to say that it’s been a very long time since that general last weighed anywhere close to 300 pounds…

That boy makes _me_ look skinny. 200 kg I’d bet.

What are they going to do? Send General Lardass to starve the Ukrainians by eating them out of house and home?

And “nearly 300 pounds”?
That’s an estimate about on par with the Russians’ casualty figures….
Or is it a misprint for “300 kilos”….?

Check your State Extension Service. They will have all kinds of instructions.
