I wonder if Russia has a special department that just fields the angry phone calls from mothers of conscripts demanding their sons be sent home immediately.

In today’s intercept, the soldier tells his mom not to bother getting a lawyer…they’re ready to take things into their own hands. Jesus I hope someone gets this on tape if and when it happens and leaks it.

sorry, this died as the last comment on the previous thread. I was mentioning that wozzkitchencreations.com is doing a july 4 sale for 20% off, code SPARKLE.

These are the folks who make an enormous number of really yummy condiments, sauces, etc. that you aren’t finding in a grocery store (balsamic fig moderna, anyone? Oh hell yes. That was not a rhetorical question).

Speaking of Arizona, they enacted a major anti-abortion/forced birth bill earlier this year.

No one involved knows what the law they enacted actually means, because the law banning abortions after 15 weeks references an older law that bans abortion, except to save the life of the mother.

That older law dates back to 1901. So, the 1901 Arizona legislature was more progressive than these white nationalist Christian fascists.

Under regular rules of construction, the older law’s provision allowing abortions to save the life of the mother would remain in force.

Ducey and the extremists want to treat this as a blanket ban, even though the law doesn’t say that.

the roberts court:

Folks, listen.
May we have your attention, please?
Attention, please.
We can deal with the trouble, friends
With a wave of our hands, these very hands!

Please observe us if you will…

With any luck, we will someday train dogs to sniff out fugitive Repug media and politicians so they can be sent to the Hague for trial. There should be plenty of specific trace odors, cocaine laced cash, cheap whisky fumes, Twinkie crumbs, etc.

Science and Civil Liberties: The Lost ACLU Lecture of Carl Sagan
Around 1987, Sagan gave an uncannily prescient lecture to the Illinois state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union on the intersection between his area of expertise and theirs. We were fortunate to obtain a recording of that lecture, which we have transcribed, lightly edited, and annotated to update its historical allusions and contemporary relevance. Sagan spoke prophetically of the irrationality that plagued public discourse, the imperative of international cooperation, the dangers posed by advances in technology, and the threats to free speech and democracy in the United States. A 35-year retrospective reveals both increments of progress (some owing to Sagan’s own efforts) and continuing menaces.
Most importantly, he highlighted the virtues common to science and civil liberties that are needed to deal with these challenges: freedom of speech, skepticism, constraints on authority, openness to opposing arguments, and an acknowledgment of one’s own fallibility.

This is how you get GIlead, folks. Once one basic right is abridged, every basic right is up for grabs. Abortion access is only one step along the way, next comes free movement of women. It’ll start within our borders, but eventually it’ll turn into movement anywhere on the planet. And it won’t just be pregnant women, it will be all women if they get their way.

True, dogs apparently cannot reliably detect pregnancy. They can easily detect whisky fumes and McDonald’s grease though, so it may yet be of some use in tracking down fugitive Republicans.

Yes, I’m angry at Republicans. I can hold two thoughts in my head at once, goddammit. But to continue insisting there’s nothing wrong with the Democratic response to GOP fascism, and try to embarrass and intimidate people out of criticizing them, is just plain self-defeating.

I saw one yesterday or the day before that basically said, “If I stop being angry at Democrats, and complaining about the way they handle things, that’s when you need to worry that I’m going to stop voting for them.” The implication being, “Because then they’ve lost me.”

Unfortunately, too many in our ranks don’t seem to get that preaching to the choir is not gonna save our asses in November. We drug a lot of folks to the polls in 2020 on pure hatred of Trump, people who we had to do little to convince to vote for Dem candidates. Those same people are now asking themselves why they should vote for Dems again and the most we can offer them is “We’re not Republicans.” The idea that that is not a convincing argument is being met with violent resistance.

They’re afraid, and think of the Democrats as the people who protect them against the theocratic-right. Fear makes people defensive.

I’ve supported the Democrats for decades because they believe in our secular society and keep a lid on the people who don’t, but they’ve clearly failed to do their job, and have earned criticism.

The thing I dislike about this meme is that it totally ignores all attempts to get Roe codified by Democrats, ignores all of the Democratic lead states stating that they will help those in other states get abortions, and ignores all of the things Democrats in Republican states are doing like announcing they aren’t prosecuting abortion cases.

I sure hope Biden isn’t planning on nominating that guy. I could see a Republican leaking it just to get us fighting against each other, but we won’t know until Biden makes the nomination. And while there are a few little things he could do, the only real solution is that we have to get people to vote, even if they vote because they are made at Biden. It’s the only way it’s going to get fixed.

Only thing I’m seeing is the air quality warnings, which are only going to get worse from here on out.

Thunderstorms I can deal with. Breathing air I can see is a problem because all of the particulates, ozone, and other contaminants that make breathing more difficult or toxic. We can thank SCOTUS for that - and upwind power producers that don’t care how much particulate and contaminants they spew.

If I recognizer that allusion, does that mean I’m old?

Earl Butz deserves to be remembered for more than telling crude racist jokes (this was not the first time he had been caught, btw), since many of our longest-standing and most intractable agricultural issues actually started with him.

His policies favored large-scale corporate farming and an end to New Deal programs.

His mantra to farmers was “get big or get out”, and he urged farmers to plant commodity crops such as corn “from fencerow to fencerow”. These policy shifts coincided with the rise of major agribusiness corporations, and the declining financial stability of the small family farm.

He was featured in the documentary King Corn, recognized as the person who started the rise of corn production, large commercial farms, and the abundance of corn in American diets. In King Corn, Butz argued that the corn subsidy had dramatically reduced the cost of food for all Americans by improving the efficiency of farming techniques. By artificially increasing demand for food, food production became more efficient and drove down the cost of food for everyone.

Democrats passed the bill in the House.
Senate blocks because of filibuster (needs 60 votes).

When was last time that Senate had 60 votes for Democrats and controlled both chambers and WH?

More Republicans claiming the vote in GOP primaries was rigged. Senate blocks because of filibuster (needs 60 votes).

When was last time that Senate had 60 votes for Democrats and controlled both chambers and WH?

And this SCOTUS would render that law unconstitutional too - because they’d invent some penumbra or emanation to claim that Congress can’t deny a fetus their rights (even as governments and legislatures do that all the time - from not counting them in the census to not extending life insurance to not considering for tax purposes until live born).

No offense, but that is a lot of words that amount to “We’re fucked no matter what.” If we’ve conceded that no law will survive this SCOTUS bench, then the only answer is a constitutional amendment. And that’s not 60 votes, that’s 435 Representatives, 67 Senators, and 38 state legislatures. Which means all the talk about having enough votes to override Sinema and Manchin on the filibuster is more smoke being blown up our asses than a California forest fire.

Our democracy needs a major overhaul, which is unlikely to happen until after we have a major crisis. The House should be expanded, D.C. should be granted statehood, and Puerto Rico as well (if it wants it), we should have multi-member districts to make gerrymandering moot, voting should be made as easy as possible, and SCOTUS thoroughly reformed.

Particularly in the many years that Republicans controlled Congress.

I wonder where all of the rich Democrats are that could have sued to stop the tax law from happening, you know, like how Republicans have these rich people whose sole job is to sue over emissions and abortion and the right to force my students to pray.

We are always working from a hole: We need government to work; the current system favors smaller states, which skew conservative, which means that even though more Democrats voting we don’t have as many people in office as we should; the right is united in their racism while too many on the left can’t unite against that racism; and the Right gets rewarded by its own for breaking the rules (see the recent decision in Wisconsin) while the left gets punished by its own (see the recent ruling in New York over gerrymandering).

And I don’t know what to do other than getting more people to the polls, and that’s why I get truly, truly annoyed at anything that looks defeatist.

And I don’t know what to do other than getting more people to the polls, and that’s why I get truly, truly annoyed at anything that looks defeatist.

Here’s the issue from my perspective: Folks like myself keep insisting that we need something more than “WE’RE NOT REPUBLICANS!” and “TRUMP BAD!” to get folks who are not devoted Democrats to the polls in November. We need to be addressing the issues hitting common folk and working to come up with plans to do so. And the response we keep getting back is that voters only need to hear is that Republicans are fascists, they intend to destroy the nation, and anybody who’s not convinced enough to vote to stop that is effectively a fascist themselves. That there’s no room for the carrot in our approach, it’s gotta be all stick, and anybody who wants to know where the carrot is needs to be whacked with the stick until they fall in line.

And that when we point this out, we’re immediately accused of “defeatism” and we’re gonna be the reason for why the party fails and the fascists take over. That that effectively makes us fascists as well, because anything less than total devotion to the party is letting the fascists win.

Given how many deals that Mitch has broken when it suited him, it doesn’t frakkin’ matter when this deal was made or what the terms were. He should be told to go frak himself with a rusty rake and thank Joe for the privilege, not get what he wants because there’s a question of honor or integrity at stake.

If the attempted overturning of the election wasn’t a major crisis, what is?

any constructive way forward is elusive, let alone even possible, when half* the country is not an honest player in ‘the game’.

weve discussed time and again that the R’s went off the rails 10, 20, 40 years ago - depending on your perspective and what you feel is the watershed moment

in one sense, of course 1/6 was / is a major crisis

Didn’t Colorado go with an all mail-in voting model? I don’t think she has a choice.

Most places in Nebraska are mail-in voting with no choice to go to a polling place. This red state is actually more all-in on mail voting than Colorado. Same with Utah.

My county routinely has a turnout north of 80% thanks to mail in voting.

If Democrats started making big gains in this state, mail voting would be out in an instant, because the purpose is conserving power. As long as mail voting does that, then we have mail voting. The second it works against them, mail voting goes away.

any constructive way forward is elusive, let alone even possible, when half* the country is not an honest player in ‘the game’.

weve discussed time and again that the R’s went off the rails 10, 20, 40 years ago - depending on your perspective and what you feel is the watershed moment

in one sense, of course 1/6 was / is a major crisis
but half the country ‘supports’ it

so it’s not the kind of crisis that points to a way forward

Probably 2/3 of the country still has this idea that it failed and that the whole concept is too abstract for it to have any effect on them.

And your comment is exactly why people think Democrats don’t do anything. What do you think people hear, Democrats accomplished some things, or Democrats didn’t accomplish everything so they accomplished nothing? We know it’s the latter, because that’s what happened with the ACA.

Yeah, sorry, but at least I could tell my fence-sitting friends and acquaintances that the ACA was worthwhile and educate them about its value. The ACA was how I was able to afford health insurance for the first time in my adult life. Judges ain’t doin’ a thing to put food on my table or gas in my car, especially if we’re grumbling after this week that it doesn’t matter what those judges say if the SCOTUS majority can rule by fiat.

re: #156 Dangerman

The complicated business of democratic politics is to negotiate agreements between groups with different interests. The objective is finding a common way forward. It requires principled opponents clashing about value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world somewhat differently.

At present mostly only large and small D democrats buy into this premise.

Meanwhile, Republicans are dismissive of the legitimacy of their political opposition. They do not market any notion of participatory politics but rather authoritarian and dictatorial power, domination, and force of will. (yes, i mostly agree with anymouse on this)

It isn’t only because what the parties want is diametrically opposed..that’s what negotiating and compromise are - i.e. raise taxes on the rich vs lower taxes in the rich.

It’s because the Rs want total power to do whatever they feel like doing. To get that, they want the complete destruction of the Ds. (Sound like anybody?)

So instead we watch an inactive Senate constantly moan about how it can’t do anything because it doesn’t have the votes, while being told that things would be “so much worse” if we actually tried to apply the least bit of pressure on the roadblocks to anything being done. This is only a single step below “We have 59 votes and the ability to abolish the filibuster to get shit done, BUT WHAT IF THE REPUBS WIN THE NEXT ELECTION!?!”

Politics sucks, democracy is messy, the glass is always half empty, and it would be so much easier if Biden could just rule by decree. The modern electorate is driven by negative polarization; we have to scare people to the polls, which the GOP has just made a lot easier with their radical abortion policies. The Democrats passed a terrific infrastructure bill and are getting lots of diverse judges confirmed. We have to unify and fight like hell to hold Congress, because the GOP has its eyes on the prize: absolute power to impose a fascist theocracy.

The Nebraska Medical Association strongly opposed bill LB933 (the total abortion ban in February).

Now they are “negotiating” with the Republicans to try to find a way forward to allow some abortions to be banned but not others. Since February, there is a new chair of the NMA and he is a conservative first and a physician second. Any place conservatives can gather power they will. It doesn’t have to be government.

we got to that place because manchin and sinema a)refused to consider filibuster reform and b)make up two votes in a 50 vote coalition. If we hadn’t experienced the January Miracle in Atlanta, we wouldn’t be getting anything passed, and we wouldn’t be getting any judges confirmed, because we wouldn’t even hold the senate.
