Speaking of Arizona, they enacted a major anti-abortion/forced birth bill earlier this year.

No one involved knows what the law they enacted actually means, because the law banning abortions after 15 weeks references an older law that bans abortion, except to save the life of the mother.

That older law dates back to 1901. So, the 1901 Arizona legislature was more progressive than these white nationalist Christian fascists.

Under regular rules of construction, the older law’s provision allowing abortions to save the life of the mother would remain in force.

Ducey and the extremists want to treat this as a blanket ban, even though the law doesn’t say that.

Science and Civil Liberties: The Lost ACLU Lecture of Carl Sagan
Around 1987, Sagan gave an uncannily prescient lecture to the Illinois state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union on the intersection between his area of expertise and theirs. We were fortunate to obtain a recording of that lecture, which we have transcribed, lightly edited, and annotated to update its historical allusions and contemporary relevance. Sagan spoke prophetically of the irrationality that plagued public discourse, the imperative of international cooperation, the dangers posed by advances in technology, and the threats to free speech and democracy in the United States. A 35-year retrospective reveals both increments of progress (some owing to Sagan’s own efforts) and continuing menaces.
Most importantly, he highlighted the virtues common to science and civil liberties that are needed to deal with these challenges: freedom of speech, skepticism, constraints on authority, openness to opposing arguments, and an acknowledgment of one’s own fallibility.

Unfortunately, too many in our ranks don’t seem to get that preaching to the choir is not gonna save our asses in November. We drug a lot of folks to the polls in 2020 on pure hatred of Trump, people who we had to do little to convince to vote for Dem candidates. Those same people are now asking themselves why they should vote for Dems again and the most we can offer them is “We’re not Republicans.” The idea that that is not a convincing argument is being met with violent resistance.

The thing I dislike about this meme is that it totally ignores all attempts to get Roe codified by Democrats, ignores all of the Democratic lead states stating that they will help those in other states get abortions, and ignores all of the things Democrats in Republican states are doing like announcing they aren’t prosecuting abortion cases.

I sure hope Biden isn’t planning on nominating that guy. I could see a Republican leaking it just to get us fighting against each other, but we won’t know until Biden makes the nomination. And while there are a few little things he could do, the only real solution is that we have to get people to vote, even if they vote because they are made at Biden. It’s the only way it’s going to get fixed.

Has the auto spell check when writing a comment stopped working for anyone else? It works if I click the button to start spell check, but it used to flag my spelled words automatically as you type.

Earl Butz deserves to be remembered for more than telling crude racist jokes (this was not the first time he had been caught, btw), since many of our longest-standing and most intractable agricultural issues actually started with him.

His policies favored large-scale corporate farming and an end to New Deal programs.

His mantra to farmers was “get big or get out”, and he urged farmers to plant commodity crops such as corn “from fencerow to fencerow”. These policy shifts coincided with the rise of major agribusiness corporations, and the declining financial stability of the small family farm.

He was featured in the documentary King Corn, recognized as the person who started the rise of corn production, large commercial farms, and the abundance of corn in American diets. In King Corn, Butz argued that the corn subsidy had dramatically reduced the cost of food for all Americans by improving the efficiency of farming techniques. By artificially increasing demand for food, food production became more efficient and drove down the cost of food for everyone.

And this SCOTUS would render that law unconstitutional too - because they’d invent some penumbra or emanation to claim that Congress can’t deny a fetus their rights (even as governments and legislatures do that all the time - from not counting them in the census to not extending life insurance to not considering for tax purposes until live born).

A SC County Commission was reversed by the state GOP when it recognized the loser based on some vague allegations that the machines weren’t working right. And the response we keep getting back is that voters only need to hear is that Republicans are fascists, they intend to destroy the nation, and anybody who’s not convinced enough to vote to stop that is effectively a fascist themselves. That there’s no room for the carrot in our approach, it’s gotta be all stick, and anybody who wants to know where the carrot is needs to be whacked with the stick until they fall in line.

And that when we point this out, we’re immediately accused of “defeatism” and we’re gonna be the reason for why the party fails and the fascists take over. That that effectively makes us fascists as well, because anything less than total devotion to the party is letting the fascists win.

Most places in Nebraska are mail-in voting with no choice to go to a polling place. This red state is actually more all-in on mail voting than Colorado. Same with Utah.

My county routinely has a turnout north of 80% thanks to mail in voting.

If Democrats started making big gains in this state, mail voting would be out in an instant, because the purpose is conserving power. As long as mail voting does that, then we have mail voting. The second it works against them, mail voting goes away.

The complicated business of democratic politics is to negotiate agreements between groups with different interests. The objective is finding a common way forward. It requires principled opponents clashing about value systems, each of which is in some way valid; a competition between basically well-intentioned people who see the world somewhat differently.

At present mostly only large and small D democrats buy into this premise.

Meanwhile, Republicans are dismissive of the legitimacy of their political opposition. They do not market any notion of participatory politics but rather authoritarian and dictatorial power, domination, and force of will. (yes, i mostly agree with anymouse on this)

It isn’t only because what the parties want is diametrically opposed..that’s what negotiating and compromise are - i.e. raise taxes on the rich vs lower taxes in the rich.

It’s because the Rs want total power to do whatever they feel like doing. To get that, they want the complete destruction of the Ds. (Sound like anybody?)

Politics sucks, democracy is messy, the glass is always half empty, and it would be so much easier if Biden could just rule by decree. The Democrats passed a terrific infrastructure bill and are getting lots of diverse judges confirmed. We have to unify and fight like hell to hold Congress, because the GOP has its eyes on the prize: absolute power to impose a fascist theocracy.

The Nebraska Medical Association strongly opposed bill LB933 (the total abortion ban in February).

Now they are “negotiating” with the Republicans to try to find a way forward to allow some abortions to be banned but not others. Since February, there is a new chair of the NMA and he is a conservative first and a physician second. Any place conservatives can gather power they will. It doesn’t have to be government.

we got to that place because manchin and sinema a)refused to consider filibuster reform and b)make up two votes in a 50 vote coalition. If we hadn’t experienced the January Miracle in Atlanta, we wouldn’t be getting anything passed, and we wouldn’t be getting any judges confirmed, because we wouldn’t even hold the senate.
