Thread, thirty-two tweets, on what conservatism is and why you can never convince a conservative to adopt a different position (taxes, guns, school shootings, climate change).
Essentially, it’s Edmond Burke’s justification for the exercise of power, but updated in simpler terms.
Here is the Republican message on everything of importance:
1. They can tell people what to do.
2. You cannot tell them what to do.
This often gets mistaken for hypocrisy, there’s an additional layer of complexity to this (later in the thread), but this is the basic formula.— Ethan Grey (@_EthanGrey) June 7, 2022

As for the politicians and pundits, they lie. You know they lie. They know you know they lie. Yet, they still lie.
Lying is the exercise of raw power over another’s reason when it is successful. Everything a conservative does is the exercise of power, whether over your right to be without religion, a woman’s right to her own body, or impose a lie to kill a million people with a disease (and death is the ultimate exercise of power over another).
Conservatives will destroy an entire nation before allowing anyone else to share power. They have done so throughout history.

Backlash after Georgia school’s new logo resembles Nazi symbol (The Guardian, today)
The rollout of a new logo for an Atlanta-area elementary school was paused after parents noted similarities to a Nazi symbol, though a school district said the design was based on a US army colonel’s eagle wings.
The Cobb county school district said on Tuesday it had halted distribution of the new logo for East Side elementary school in Marietta after it drew condemnation on social media.
The logo depicts an eagle, the school’s mascot, over the school’s initials ES.
The Nazi eagle, which was developed in the 1920s and later became a symbol for white supremacists, depicts an eagle holding a swastika in its talons.
Georgia’s second-largest school district announced plans to delay the new logo while “immediately reviewing needed changes”.

Of course. But it’ll sound even more impossible to his ears than 100. Let him learn of that clue x 4’ headed for his noggin it once incentivized to read up on it.
Or that my masking is based on what I learned last year of Swedish high school. I was one of the last years to receive the obligatory Civil Defence school training.
One of the things we learned of was both the risk of use of CBRN weapons, as well as the risk of disease while packed in a fallout shelter.
We had a list with various actions to mitigate transmission. For aerosol transmission it is protecting your airways, washing your hands, distancing according to known maximum “jump” distances for the disease, especially if you have symptoms, and if you have access to a safe vaccine, take it.
And yeah, I’ve tried to explained it rightio’s, but no “Science can have changed since then!! 11ty!!” Yes of course it has. Better masks, better soaps, better knowledge of jumping distances and better vaccines. But the fundamental course of action remains the same: 😷🧼↔️🌡🤬💉.

What’s going on with worldometer? For some reason, it no longer reports total US population and therefore omits several important statistics.
Nebraska is back to not giving county statistics again.
Several weeks ago, the state changed the state dashboard to exclude important metrics. Moreover, they removed the Covid-19 dashboard entirely, and simply report Covid-19 under the classification “respiratory illness.”
Testing is dramatically dropping (by design of the state) so positive test numbers are also dropping (as a result).
The new dashboard is also misdesigned so that much of it is cut off on the right side of the screen. I’ve reported it to the state (I imagine others have as well) but they haven’t bothered fixing it.
In Panhandle Public Health District (the Nebraska Panhandle plus Grant County):
Positive cases last week: 100
Positivity rate: 17%
Vaccination rate (stuck for months): 47%
In hospital: 2
Deaths: 298
Most cases by age group: 20-29, then 30-39, then 40-49

re: #56 Hecuba’s daughter
Testing is dropping everywhere; most people test at home and never report to authorities.
In Nebraska, for a test you must be referred by a doctor to a hospital. In very few places can you get a test at a clinic or a pharmacy, and even those require a referral by a doctor.
For Paxlovid, the drug is restricted by the state government. (For example, only one hospital here has it, they note they have roughly seventy courses, and they are only allowed to give out two courses a week.)
Nebraska Med’s chief epidemiologist noted that outside of Omaha and Lincoln, it is almost impossible to get a test.
The same goes for vaccinations. You must go to a doctor who writes a prescription to get the vaccine at a hospital. A pharmacy may not administer the vaccine unless there is a physician on-site.
The vaccine itself is free because of the feds, but a doctor’s and hospital appointments add far too much cost which insurance will not pay for. Hence, we’ve been stuck at a 47% vaccination rate for months out here.

They can order the rapid tests from the government. That requires Internet service or cell service, both of which are in short supply here.
Even my mother in Chicago couldn’t order rapid tests since she can’t afford Internet service, so I ordered them for her from my computer here.

Poll: Trump endorsement has little influence on Hageman-Cheney race in Wyoming (Rapid City, SD Journal, July 19, 2022)
Former President Donald Trump has made the defeat of Rep. Liz Cheney a top priority, even visiting Wyoming for the first time to campaign for Harriet Hageman, his pick to unseat her. But a new Casper Star-Tribune poll found his endorsement may have little influence over voters here.
Only 30% of people who plan to vote in the Wyoming Republican Primary next month say the Trump endorsement makes them more likely to vote for Hageman, the poll found. In comparison, 26% say it makes them less likely to vote for Trump’s pick, while 44% indicated it has no effect on their decision.
“They’re voting against Cheney to vote against Cheney, not because Trump told them to vote against Cheney,” said Brad Coker, managing director of Mason-Dixon, the polling company that performed the survey for the Star-Tribune.

Though in this case, a hasty visit to an auto-paint shop is likely to have been involved somewhere in the process…
There are lots of parts of the world where Nazi symbolism (and even ideology) does not evoke the same gut reaction that it does in most of Europe and America. You can find examples in South America, the Philippines and other parts of Asia. They will insist that they have a more “distanced” and “nuanced” view of things.

And a car with such provocative message perfectly painted on it? Standing outside the consulate? Apparently for some time? No way it wouldn’t have happened without a CCP officials approval or possibly even on CCP officials orders to power project against Israel for some reason or another…
You do realize that China is desperately trying to bury a damaging report about the situation with the Uyghur minority right now?
I’m trying to remember which book, but… in one of the Jack Ryan books, Tom Clancy has a subplot about a Secret Service agent who’d been compromised by… was it Russia or Iran? Can’t remember now. But he was maybe/probably an assassin-in-waiting until he was caught.

They were quick to sign on to the War on Terror after 9/11 as cover to crack down on their own “domestic Islamist terrorists”, which worked for quite some time.

I am aware of the Uyghur situation. Chengdu is a large city: I can believe a random car parked on a street would not necessarily come to the authorities’ attentions until someone called it out to them.
In that thread a whole lot of fascists are claiming it’s not really a Waffen SS symbol, it’s really a “hooked cross” or a Hindu symbol.

The Reichsadler, yes… And this combined with the uptick in antisemitism in Chinese social media since Feb 24… They know their social media is being a kept an eye on by foreigners… Yet it took it beginning to gain attention until it was quashed? More likely than not that the censors in the social media did not know how to act because they knew it’s a government op… More than likely the same situation here…
Also, given the current bank problems, it’s an easy diversion for the CCP to dig up old antisemitic canards against Jew bankers to get the people off their backs…

Here we go again.
Truckers protesting a looming California labor law shut down one of the busiest seaports in the United States for the third day in a row.
Operations were halted at the Port of Oakland on Wednesday as hundreds of independent big-rig truckers picketed gates and blocked other drivers from hauling cargo in and out of terminals at the port.
The truckers are protesting Assembly Bill 5, a gig economy law passed in 2019 that sets tougher standards for classifying workers as independent contractors.
I worked for TNT, where the workers had regular schedules set by management, leased their trucks from the company, had to wear company livery but were still considered “independent contractors”
After TLC lost their cash cow “19 Kids and Counting,” three years ago they slipped in another Christian show called “Welcome to Plathville.”
The premise of this show is a Christian family with way too many children decides to isolate themselves in Georgia to home school their children and protect them from evil secular society.
Despite the incredible odds against them, the two oldest children (then minor teenagers) do not believe the premise of Christianity (and make the mistake as minors to tell their parents they are atheists).
The parents respond with reasoned, measured questions asking their children why they think that. (No, the parents act as most Christian parents do: They kick their two eldest children out of the home and tell them never to return. TLC thinks this is a good thing to make money on, abusing children.)
In season three (the current one), TLC manages to convince the now nineteen year-old woman and twenty year-old man to come back to talk to the parents, ostensibly so the children can admit how sorry they are to their parents and how they were really wrong to not believe in God.
That doesn’t go well, as the children talk about how hard it was living on the street, obtaining GEDs so they might have a chance at getting work or furthering their education. That also doesn’t go well: The mom is personally offended they hold her responsible for crippling their education, and the dad is personally offended that they are still atheists. That ends with them told never to come back, and the children are dead to their parents.
Christian cruelty sells on American TV. It’s not enough that Christians all across the land do this every day; TLC has to have a “how to” programme to persecute your children for not following your religion.

These parents, I’m sure, went to Church and learned their moral lessons from the Bible almost every day of their lives, and threw their children to the wolves without hesitation when the children displeased them.
At least they didn’t stone their children to death.
The modern apologetic from both Evangelicals and so-called liberal churches is the plain text doesn’t actually mean what it says: It only refers to severe punishment for adult children (not mentioned as such), or that a parent should use a rod.
On the other hand was the Stubborn Children Law in Massachusetts, based on the Bible and passed in 1646. It carried the death penalty for such children. (Christianity is only less violent now because the Enlightenment reigned in its barbarism.)
The law was not repealed until 1973.
Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire passed similar laws later.
The text of the Massachusetts law reads:
“If a man have a stubborn or rebellious son, of sufficient years and understanding sixteen years of age, which will not obey the voice of his Father, or the voice of his Mother, and that when they have chastened him will not harken unto them: then shall his Father and Mother being his natural parents, lay hold on him, and bring him to the Magistrates assembled in Court and testify unto them, that their son is stubborn and rebellious and will not obey their voice and chastisement, but lives in sundry notorious crimes, such a son shall be put to death.”

re: #120 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
Legal scholars following how that law was applied noted that the law was later expanded to include daughters. They note that after daughters were added to the law, over three hundred girls were incarcerated in the Framingham Women’s Reformatory between 1877 and 1971 for the crime of disobedience to parental authority.
A rabbi first learned of the law when he was called to represent a minor girl in a case in 1969. The case Joyner v Commonwealth was appealed all the way to the Massachusetts Supreme Court.
The defendant’s lawyer held the law was unconstitutionally vague. Every court to the Supreme Court of Massachusetts held for Middlesex County that the minor child was “unruly” and therefore should be remanded to the Women’s Reformatory.
In 1970, the Supreme Court held for the defendant, ordered her released from custody, and ordered Middlesex County to pay all court costs and lawyer’s fees.

Teachers are invested in the lives of their students (or should be, if they’re good teachers). They want to form bonds with the kids they see every day for the majority of the year, so that they can reach them and understand how to instruct them. I absolutely heard bits and pieces of my teachers’ life stories when I was in school; they weren’t shy about sharing who they were or where they came from, especially teachers I resonated with.

True. Some people at our former church (all unvaccinated) are currently on their THIRD go-round.
Maybe I’m not Christian enough, but it seems pretty dumb to me to roll the dice on getting a disease with poorly understood long-term health risks and an unreasonably high short-term risk of death or serious damage even ONCE. Why you’d want to dance with the reaper THREE TIMES is absolutely beyond me.

They are lucky to still be alive to catch it a third time. The only unvaccinated person in my office died of Covid last December. She is the only person I know personally who died of Covid, but I know several who were hospitalized, and I know of other deaths second hand.

God works in decision trees. Some of those decisions are, “You’re stupid and you’ll die if you do that.” It’s our choice to walk down that road, He just tells us what happens at the end of it.

I have felt pangs of guilt that I didn’t try harder to convince my coworker to get vaccinated, but it would’ve been a futile effort. Her husband actually posted more anti-vaccine memes on FB after she died than he did before.
re: #166 Belafon
Need the gun people here to read this: dailykos.com
The short version: The US military has been paying for a new rifle to replace a bunch of different ones, such as the M-4. It was designed to penetrate body armor. A company, Sig Saur, is now beginning to sell civilian versions of the weapon.
That boat has sailed. The 6.8mm cartridge, which is the key to the weapon’s power, is already available in a number of rifles, including the AR-15.
For that matter, the AR-15’s original 5.56 chambering will penetrate most police body armor, at least at close range where most such encounters happen. The 6.8 has considerably greater penetration but probably no better than traditional high power cartridges like the 30/06. There are semi-auto 30/06s and even more powerful S/A chamberings, but they are mostly straight up hunting rifles with wooden furniture and 5 round mags. They might be very useful in a civil war situation but fortunately the ammosexual RWers have an aversion to them, probably based on their appearance and heavy recoil.
I would expect the 6.8 to become a lot more popular now, though.

I feel this. When my in-laws got COVID and Mrs. Fish’s dad was seriously sick, my wife was beside herself about her mom. Her dad never would have gotten vaccinated; he is a seriously hardcore conspiracy theorist. But her mom is able to be swayed, and Mrs. Fish had tried very hard to persuade her to get the shot anyway. (She ultimately declined, citing “respecting and submitting to her husband”, like a good Christian woman.) She would’ve been inconsolable if anything had happened to her mom because she was unable to persuade her.
re: #180 Belafon
The reason to not wish for that is you don’t get it once and you are done. You can still get it again later, even if you are vaxxed.

it is hard to respect that adults are responsible for their own decisions, even within families.
it is difficult to accept and to watch. Especially when you know that what they don’t know can be dangerous or destructive.
My wife and I stopped at a Buc-ees this past weekend. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically a big-ass gas station/truck stop place found mostly in Texas and elsewhere in the south.
It’s like a combination of Target, your local Chevron station, and a mall food court.
There had to be at least 300 people in the place when we arrived. Not shoulder-to-shoulder busy but not far off. I saw only one family wearing masks.
Suffice to say, we got the hell out of there QUICKLY.
re: #178 Eclectic Cyborg
You know, I’m almost at the point I wish Covid would hit me and I could just get it over with (I am vaxxed and boosted). I haven’t had it that I know of (may have had Omicron last fall, had a chest cold like illness that lasted two weeks), but it seems like just about everybody is going to get it sooner or later.
I’m encouraged that people are starting to wear masks indoors here again. I was lax but have started again too, though I’m under no illusions that it will keep me 100% safe. If another booster is deemed necessary, I’ll get it. I too am not sure if I’ve had it. In mid-March 2020 I had diarrhea for a week with low fever, and even after these cleared up I had weird issues like being unable to remember my debit PIN number at check out. There were known cases in our state, but it wasn’t clear how widespread. So, who knows. Anyway, I’ll keep doing my best to never* get it.

We stopped at the “first in South Carolina” version, thinking we’d get lunch on our way to Columbia. The checkout lines were 50 people deep; mostly at the front of the store were crappy souvenir crap; we looked around for about 3 minutes and left.
The other thing about Buc-ees is that they have been paying pretty decently above minimum wage and offer health care, vacations, regular schedules, and 401K.

They’ve got to do closing arguments, the judge has to provide jury instructions, and then the jury begins its deliberations.
It’s possible we could get a verdict as early as EOD today, or tomorrow, depending on how much time the parties take to make their closings.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) “has become a focus of an anti-abortion group, as well as a fellow Republican lawmaker, following a speech where she advocated for rape and incest exemptions to a proposed abortion ban making its way through the state legislature,” Newsweek reports.Said Mace, referring to her own rape at age 16: “Rape is not a partisan issue. A rapist is not a father. And I hope and pray any women or teenager who is raped or assaulted or a victim of incest would choose life. But I’m not going to take that decision away from anybody else. You have no idea what a woman or child goes through who is a victim of rape or incest.”

Feel good story of the morning.
A family were left stunned when their dog escaped only to return later that day with a rosette from a dog show. Peter and Paula Closier became sick with worry when their five-year-old beagle-cross Bonnie vanished on Sunday morning.
They looked all over the house in Bolney, West Sussex with their two daughters and their neighbours even joined in. Paula, 48, had called the police, vets and dog warden in a frantic bid to find her.
Little did they know John Wilmer had spotted the pet by the side of the road just minutes after she escaped as he took his two dogs to a show in Felbridge, Surrey. The family’s fears were eased when Paula spotted a Facebook post by John asking for the creature’s owner to get in touch.
And once he knew the owners had been told, John decided to enter Bonnie into the competition for best rescue dog and she returned with the third place rosette. When Bonnie got back she just thought she had had a fun day out but “knows she shouldn’t have run out in the morning.” (pic at the link Wales Online)

There are lots of parts of the world where Nazi symbolism (and even ideology) does not evoke the same gut reaction that it does in most of Europe and America. You can find examples in South America, the Philippines and other parts of Asia. They will insist that they have a more “distanced” and “nuanced” view of things.

195 GOPers in the House voted against your right to contraceptives.
This shows that the GOP has no intention of protecting rights that SCOTUS will shred in overturning Griswold. They will continue shifting all the burdens on to women, all while denying them rights and agency over their own bodies.

These votes are important in letting people know what the GOP agenda is: outlaw birth control, pass a “life begins at conception” bill, pass a “marriage is one (biological) man and woman” bill, and allow “sincerely held (Christian) religious beliefs” to outweigh any other laws in country.

Don’t get me wrong; there are true believers in this lot. Margarine Tater-Greens and Lauren Boobert definitely appear to be among them. But for the rest of the GOP, they vote according to the religious wingnuts’ whims because they know who butters their bread. They are beholden to a group they only tolerate for the sake of political expediency, because they are the source of power.
re: #222 The Pie Overlord!
Surprised that so few Republicans voted to keep birth control legal when 47 voted for SSM. My guess is they are worried about getting crosswise with the forced birth activists, who view some forms of birth control as abortifacients.

No, it is a swastika. They go in both directions, and can be found in public everywhere influenced by Indian religions between India and Japan. In Hinduism, the clockwise facing one (like the one in that photo) is for those on a left-handed path, but it is considered auspicious in Buddhism. In Japan, for example, I understand they are the standard map symbol for Buddhist Temples. There are many variants of it, some with 4 dots in the middle, and some with pointy edges.
The Nazi’s called “their” sign the hakenkreutz — the Crooked Cross — IIRC.
re: #255 jaunte
If we can align their self-interest in inching left, they will inch.
But their self-interest will never work that way. Because at its heart, conservatism is only one principle - only conservatives get to hold power and everyone and everything else is expendable. That’s it. Only conservatives get to make rules, only conservatives get to break rules. Any lessening of that is, by definition, against their self-interest.
I suppose a different scenario could be something like ‘support something that benefits the common good or be hung by the mob’. That, I suppose, would involve taking a liberal position that would be in their self-interest. But it would only be in the short term self-interest.

This is an excellent example of how human sacrifice is okay in the US. In any other civilised nation, this man is a criminal and is going away for a long time, because most people and nations understand that using lethal force for revenge after a property crime is appalling and monstrous. But a grand jury of citizens in the US doesn’t even think he committed a crime at all. Frankly, I’m surprised he was even charged, though I suspect he was only charged because he wasn’t white.

It’s a symbol for Hirosaki City, Japan. They have very artistic manhole covers that feature the manji (swastika). They sometimes have to deal with the outrage of uninformed foreign tourists.

Thankfully the new rifle it probably less dangerous on civilian hands than an AR-15.
It fires a more powerful round, yes, but the armour piercing round will not be available to civilians, and the fact that it does fire a more powerful round will make it slower firing in the hands of less trained shooters.
It is also absurdly expensive and much heavier than the AR-15. Frankly I think the army are stupid to be buying it.
