I don’t think any actual, breathing person has ever been as adored, indeed, worshiped, by such a large segment of the American population. I’ve had the impression that judges and their clerks are pretty set in their procedures, and that of the court, being followed and attempting to run things smoothly.

Trump operating per se is just not going to work. He won’t be organized (and won’t tolerate being told what to do in a public setting), if he shows up late or attempts to grandstand an entrance he’ll be look at contempt right then and there, and if he starts talking back to the judge or interrupting he be in a sidebar real fast. And his ego is not going to take being scolded by a judge.

Just finished “Zero Fail” by Carol Leonnig, an excellent book about the Secret Service and its mismanagement/lack of funding/outdated technology/Animal House mentality. The chapters about Trump were rushed but it is clear that, like most police organizations, it needs to be cleaned out. But the most infuriating part was Trump reckless demands on the organization, without providing the financial resources so that they could operate effectively. And of course, he made a profit by forcing them to pay rent at his properties. The GOP and Trump hypocrisy of criticizing Obama’s golf outings, while ignoring the costs that were 12 times as great for the Trump family.

So far today there has been little change in our House seat election:

Peltola, a Yup’ik former state lawmaker from Bethel and the only Democrat in the race, took an early lead in the special election with nearly 38% of first-place votes.

Palin, propelled by her name recognition, was in second place with almost 31.9% of first-place votes. Begich, a businessman making his first run at statewide elected office, was in third place with 28.5%.

The election officials have not released any information about the 2nd choice voting results. I think they may wait until August 31st when all mail in ballots due. Of course this creates a lot of speculation.

Naturally, criticisms of the ranked choice voting process are coming out of the woodwork. There will be a major effort next year to remove the process.

Ranked choice voting, in first test in Alaska, is already under attack

The citizens initiative that put Alaska’s ranked choice system into place, and simultaneously eliminated the state’s partisan primaries, passed in 2020 by just 1%. Since then, it’s been protected by a provision in the Alaska Constitution that bars lawmakers from repealing an initiative for two years after its passage.

In other news, fall has arrived in SE Alaska. School stared today, leaves are starting to turn color and fall, the fireweed blossoms are long gone, it’s raining very hard, and the temps are in the low 50’s.

Allen Weisselberg, a fiercely loyal, long-time employee of former President Donald Trump’s company, is in advanced talks to plead to the indictment, the person said. The judge overseeing the case has set a hearing for Thursday morning.

Under the terms of the deal, which is still being finalized, Weisselberg would receive a five-month prison sentence but would serve about 100 days behind bars, the person said. Weisselberg faced up to 15 years in prison.

The day is going to come, sometime before the end of the century, when people are suddenly struck with how high methane levels are, and realize there is nothing that can be done about stopping it.

Because what is going to happen is the oceans are going to outgas as the water along the continental shelves warm.

Warm water dissolves less gas that cold water.

When the methane clathrates sublimate faster and faster, the only end result is a much hotter world.
