Today we celebrate the 1,000th concert the Tiny Desk team has captured and published, and I can’t imagine a more inspiring spirit to help us celebrate than Angélique Kidjo. Originally from the West African country of Benin, the singer and activist plays a crucial role in spreading the music of Africa and the spirit of love in all that she does.

When I started the Tiny Desk series in April 2008, I never imagined its impact. So many artists’ voices have been raised and shared with music fans worldwide through these performances. When Angélique was preparing for her Tiny Desk concert, she thought it would be a good idea to watch some past concerts for inspiration. It’s then she saw Sampa The Great’s home concert from Zambia and immediately reached out in hopes of collaborating. Now here they are, at NPR, brought together by a series that has been blessed with so much talent and a global audience with big ears and open arms.

Angélique Kidjo’s band drives the energy and melody as they perform songs from her 2021 album Mother Nature and then dig back a decade to perform the song “Afirika,” encouraging strength for the African people. The celebration concludes as Angélique Kidjo pays tribute to her friend and mentor Miriam Makeba by performing her 1967 global hit, “Pata Pata.” It was a lovely way to shine a light on how we can impact each other’s lives through music.

The effort to reduce mass shootings got a win over the weekend, as American Express, Mastercard, and Visa all said they would adopt a new code to categorize sales at gun shops. That in turn could help flag suspicious purchases that could be the prelude to a mass shooting—for instance, the shooter responsible for the Pulse Nightclub massacre in 2016 spent $26,000 on guns and ammunition just a week earlier.

The move by the credit card processing companies followed the announcement of the new code by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which Sen. Elizabeth Warren called “an important step towards improving coordination with law enforcement and preventing gun violence.”

Such codes are used to break out purchases at many types of business, including coffee shops, movie theaters, and salons. Gun lobbyists think it’s unfairly targeting guns to apply the same type of code to gun stores, but, as New York City Mayor Eric Adams has said, “When you buy an airline ticket or pay for your groceries, your credit card company has a special code for those retailers. It’s just common sense that we have the same policies in place for gun and ammunition stores.”

re: #6 Belafon

It’s only going to work if the credit card processors and/or the issuing banks then build some algorithms to flag suspicious transactions. Otherwise, it’s just spitting in the wind.

Daily KOS is reporting a QAnon tragedy out of Michigan where a 53-year old man shot and killed his wife and dog as well as shot one of his daughters, who survived to call the police. A second daughter was staying with friends and is unharmed. Apparently, the man was deep down the QAnon rabbit hole and when his family declined to follow, he decided they had to die, so he shot them. When the police arrived, he met them outside with gunfire, whereupon he was killed.

Two more bodies attributable to TFFG.

I’ve said it before that they may be making a mistake calling them children.

If they have any recognized rights, like the right to life, well so does the mother.

There’s a system for dealing with conflicting and competing rights.

No one has automatic, unquestioned, unchallengeable and superior rights to another.

At the moment they’re working by totally banning a medical procedure. A stupid approach that doesn’t account for certain correct and obvious uses of it. Just like they’re trying to do with the plan b drugs.

If they morph it into a rights issue I think they open up a can of worms they’ll wish they hadnt

Looks like they are trying to make the original Dobbs case nationwide — by implementing the Roberts approach and banning abortions after 15 weeks, which affects only those states that still offer legalized abortion. Obviously this bill will not pass the Senate as long as the Democrats are in control, but after November if there is a change in control of both Houses, Biden will veto the bill. However, when the GOP next has the trifecta, it won’t be a 15 week limit, it will be a nationwide total ban.

Today I went to the bank to get quarters to do laundry, and when I stuck my card in the reader, the teller said, ‘What’s that?’. It was a credit card that had just been replaced by a new one in the mail, at which point, I had taken my bank debit card out of my wallet and disposed of it. I figured out what had happened, and asked the teller to order me a new debit card.

I stopped by work to say I’d be taking the week off, and I got a hug and some free food. The hug was free too.

It’s not that this war is an intel bonanza, that’s been true of past wars for centuries. No, what’s so hilarious is that the Russian conscripts are so desperate to GTFO that they’re running away without making even a token attempt to damage or destroy anything valuable. We’re finding totally intact vehicles whose only issue is either cheap Chinese tires or that they’ve run out of fuel. NATO analysts must be absolutely swamped with data from the last six months alone.

It’s less than two months until the midterms.

Your party has already suffered two massive upsets since the Dobbs ruling dropped that were a total shock to pundits.

Polling and registration data alike shows that there has been a massive influx of women into the voter pool since said ruling.

And numerous candidates have had to wipe entire sections of their campaign websites of any mention of abortion just to avoid the issue.

But sure, just strut out to the cameras and announce that you’re gonna make a national abortion ban the centerpiece of your appeal to voters in November.

What’s the worst that could happen?////////

It was run as a test in June/July/August, good for local rail connections (No Intercity or ICE) for nine euros for the whole month for the whole country.

German train stations tend to be located downtown, which means that the immediate neighborhoods are often sketchy, but access is generally easy, with most bus and tram/subway lines connecting there.

Anyways, there are plans to reinstate the nationwide monthly pass for a less spectacular price (they are currently considering €49 euros, which is still a great deal for anyone who uses it regularly).

Two for Tuesday, and why I may wait to retire.

Minnesota nurses began a three-day strike on Monday in protest of pay and staffing shortages, in the largest private-sector nurses’ strike in U.S. history.

Supported by ‘Squad’ member Ilhan Omar, who represents Minnesota in Congress, and the Democrat governor of Minnesota, Tim Waltz, 15,000 nurses angered by conditions and pay went on strike.

snip

The Minnesota Nurses Association has proposed a 30 percent pay increase over the next three years, noting inflation is at a 40-year high.

Health-care groups have proposed a pay increase of 10 to 12 percent.

‘The union’s wage demands remain at 29 and 30 percent increases over three years, which we’ve told them is unrealistic and unaffordable,’ Omodt said.

dailymail.co.uk
Another example:

The Biden administration is scrambling to head off freight rail strikes at the end of the week that could cost as much as $2 billion per day, further choking supply chains and causing what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce warned would be an ‘economic disaster.’

Labor Secretary Marty Walsh has canceled travel plans and the White House is holding crisis meetings.

Unions and railroads have until Friday to agree contracts for tens of thousands of workers.

snip

They were based on the presidential emergency board’s recommendations that called for 24 percent raises over five years, $5,000 in bonuses and an extra day of paid leave a year.

But those agreements do not include some of the biggest unions and more than half of 115,000 workers involved in talks.

As a result, rail companies have begun putting shutdown plans into action.

dailymail.co.uk

I certainly don’t want to lock in a pension at the beginning of an inflationary trend.

He must believe it will rally their bade. That is the only thing that makes amy sense.

Florida:

Lee County GOP to consider branding WHO as terrorists and barring IRS and FBI agents

Another resolution takes aim at use of Dominion electronic voting machines.

Lee County Republicans this week will consider resolutions demanding Florida outlaw electronic voting machines and federal agents. They will also consider whether to declare the World Health Organization (WHO) and World Economic Forum (WEF) as terrorist organizations.

The series of controversial resolutions will appear on the agenda for a special meeting to be held Sept. 15 at party headquarters. The meeting will be closed to the public, with only REC members permitted to attend.

Jonathan Martin, Chair of the Lee County Republican Executive Committee (REC), stressed that the resolutions do not represent the view of the REC unless and until a majority of members support adopting them.

“They are not necessarily a priority of the party until the party chooses to make them a priority,” said Martin, a likely incoming state Senator.

Martin said the resolutions were proposed at the last REC meeting, a contentious event that spanned four hours, but came up only after many members had already left and there was no longer a quorum.

Three members proposed four resolutions at that point, but with no ability to take a vote, a special meeting was called, Martin said.

But look at this picture of the new King addressing the combined Parliament of Commons and Lords:

Very very white with only a few darker skinned folk widely scattered in the crowd.

And of course many are quite old.

There is a good NPR article on the hot new topic of Quiet Quitting.

The economics behind ‘quiet quitting’ — and what we should call it instead

Over the last several weeks, the concept of “quiet quitting” has exploded like a supernova across the media universe.

The big bang began on TikTok, with a video uploaded by a 20-something engineer named Zaid Khan. With the sound of a piano playing a ragtime-style tune and summertime shots of New York City flashing across the screen, Khan narrates a 17-second video that has introduced millions of people to the idea.

“I recently learned about this term called quiet quitting, where you’re not outright quitting your job, but you’re quitting the idea of going above and beyond,” Khan says. “You’re still performing your duties, but you’re no longer subscribing to the hustle culture mentality that work has to be your life. The reality is it’s not — and your worth as a person is not defined by your labor.”

Quiet quitting, in other words, is not really about quitting. It’s more like a philosophy for doing the bare minimum at your job.

If you aren’t being compensated appropriately for everything you do, this should be the first step while you look for a better job.

However it will only go so far since a job action by only one person has little impact on the wallet of the owner class.

Organizing a Union will allow multiple workers to have a positive impact on their productivity, compensation, work environment and everything else needed to help a worker receive the actual value of their labor rather than the fraction of the value that the owners want to get away with paying for the value of their workers’ labor.

No matter what the Republicans claim, class war is ongoing, and they have been winning. That can be changed, and freedom can win again here like Ukrainians are winning in the Donbas.

Yesterday I left for work early to look for photo opportunities. I drove south of Eau Claire and decide to drive past where my grandmother lived a lifetime ago. To say she had issue is to understate it. Her alcoholism (“you can’t be an alcoholic if you only drink beer”) was in some ways the least of it. The house was, bluntly, a four-room shack where the sleeping areas were divided between her sons and daughters by sheets hung as curtains. It was ripped down as soon as she died, and no one misses it. One of my uncles and his wife had a mobile home on the property for a time till he died from cirrhosis of the liver a few years later. Like mother like son, I guess.

The property has apparently been sold again and there is now a huge & fugly McMansion going up there. At least a couple of the oaks I played under as a boy survive. The grass runway and hangers next door of the Piper J3 Cub owner I first flew with are long gone; the land being turned into housing plots.

Good night moon…

I’m not sure Russian soldiers would want to go home after surrendering. Ideally they’d try to get their families out, or else they’ll all be disappeared by FSB.

If there are enough of them, the FSB can’t disappear them all. This is no longer Stalin’s NKVD terror state

re: #135 William Lewis

OT. Good juju appreciated.

Ms. Cyborg just took our 10 year old doggo to the vet. She’s lost some weight and we think she is nearly blind and may have arthritis. She is still eating, drinking and pooping as dogs do so we don’t think anything is imminent, but my wife has already lost her mother this year and I’d hate for us to lose our beloved dog on top of that.

My two 15 yr. old cats each chose one of us as their fave when they were kittens. The one who chose Mr. w now seems older than his litter mate.

There are POWs in every war. Putin knows about this. There’s no evidence any Russian POWs have been repressed merely for having been POWs (even though this necessitates giving up).

The Russians imprisoned 10s of millions of returning soldiers and POW’s after WWII in the infamous Gulag systems, merely because they had either been in prison camps and observed Western prisoner treatment as a comparison, or because they had escaped from German POW camps and thus were suspected of potentially being deep spies.

On our cross-country bike trip in 1986, Mr. w and I went from the southwest corner of Kansas, into the OK panhandle, barely missing Texas, and crossed into New Mexico. We got to the rest area/welcome center and thought we got to heaven. There was green grass, which we hadn’t seen for days, spectacular landscaping, bathrooms with hot and cold running water, and the largest rolls of toilet paper I had ever seen in my life. The attendant invited us to his ancestral home, which wasn’t too far out of our way, but it was up a mountain. We had to decline. Nine years later, we moved to New Mexico, and stayed for 25 years.

Unlike Putin, Stalin actually personally ordered to kill significant groups of POWs en masse (you remember Katyn), and Stalin was, in fact, much worse and bloodthirstier than Putin. So the fact that even under Stalin most enemy POWs remained alive argues against this hypothesis. Also consider that even the Azov bogeymen (vis a vis Putin’s propaganda) were taken alive and most remain alive so far.

Russian troops have surrendered en masse in the face of a rapid Ukrainian counter-attack that is continuing to gain ground today, leading some to hope that a turning point in the war has finally been reached.

Kyiv’s military intelligence said large numbers of Moscow’s soldiers had laid down their weapons rather than fight troops advancing east out of Kharkiv because ‘they understand the hopelessness of their situation’.

Oleksiy Arestovich, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the military has captured so many Russian soldiers over the last several days that it is running out of space to house them - with military intelligence spokesman Andrey Yusov adding that ‘significant’ numbers of Russian officers are among them.

A statement on his Facebook page listed no cause of death but said Mr. Lewis “died peacefully at his home in Chicago” Monday morning.

Inflation rose more than expected in August as rising shelter and food costs offset a drop in gas prices, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Tuesday.

The consumer price index, which tracks a broad swath of goods and services, increased 0.1% for the month and 8.3% over the past year. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, CPI rose 0.6% from July and 6.3% from the same month in 2021.

Economists had been expecting headline inflation to fall 0.1% and core to increase 0.3%, according to Dow Jones estimates. The respective year-over-year forecasts were for 8% and 6% gains.

Energy prices fell 5% for the month, led by a 10.6% slide in the gasoline index. However, those declines were offset by increases elsewhere.

The food index increased 0.8% in August and shelter costs, which make up about one-third of the weighting in the CPI, jumped 0.7% and are up 6.2% from a year ago.

Medical care services also showed a big gain, rising 0.8% on the month and up 5.6% from August 2021. New vehicle prices also climbed, increasing 0.8% though used vehicles fell 0.1%.

I saw that railway workers are thinking about striking. I do hope they get more, and I realize there’s always an election to worry about, but less than 2 months before one of the most pivotal ones ever, what would collapsing the existing fragile supply chain do for their cause?

yes, that part is true.

it’s this asinine argument ‘i dont want my money going to…”
it basically ignores that there’s an entire government that exists, and has a function.

similar to when they say ‘he’s not my president, or senator’ or whatever

They’re lying. Granted, they do only record calls from sycophants, but they’re still lying. If it comes out of their mouths, they’re lying. And I’d venture to guess that all those calls were from big, strong men with tears in their eyes, men who’ve never before cried in their lives.

New details of the death of the Russian top manager appeared in the Telegram channel Baza.

According to the publication, the man and his friends were intoxicated when they boarded the recreational motorboat. In addition, Pechorin decided to swim before sailing, which angered the captain of the boat, who did not want to go to sea after sunset.

The channel’s source reported that the company continued to drink on the boat. Forty minutes after sailing, the captain was informed of a man overboard. Presumably, Pechorin fell into the water from the deck in the bow of the vessel. According to another version, the top manager, ignoring the comments of the captain, sat on the decorative fence and fell into the sea, when the boat was rocking on the water, the publication writes. Immediately after that, the captain turned the boat and together with the team began to search.

I think what the “conservatives” are missing here (among vast quantities of other stuff), is there there actually IS a “plan to end the war”, and it’s not even particularly “long-term”. It’s just that said plan is for the Ukrainians to utterly kick the Russians’ asses on the battlefield, boot the survivors back across the border, and then get about the business of rebuilding their country* as a member of the EU/NATO/Western World.
