Under new “model policies” for schools’ treatment of transgender students released Friday evening, the Department of Education is requiring that families submit legal documentation to earn their children the right to change names and genders at school. I’m guessing that the judge can attempt to hold the entire set of court cases hostage if she cannot get her way. That is, dismiss the case with prejudice. And attempt to order that all seized materials be returned to tfg.

Even if those orders are eventually overturned, it could take years. At which point, any damage assessment would be badly undercut.

A state district judge Friday blocked Texas’ child welfare agency from pursuing abuse investigations into gender-affirming health care provided to any transgender child whose parent is a member of the LGBT advocacy group PFLAG, expanding a previously narrow injunction that applied only to a few families.
Judge Amy Clark Meachum in Travis County wrote in her ruling that the lawsuit filed by the group to halt all such investigations is likely to succeed in proving that the state agency unlawfully adopted the policy of treating gender-affirming care, such as hormone therapy or puberty blockers, as possible child abuse.
IN-DEPTH: Families of trans kids are living in fear of CPS investigations, some leaving Texas altogether

The policy change took effect in February after Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a nonbinding opinion finding that some kinds of gender-affirming care could constitute abuse, and Gov. Greg Abbott then pointed to that opinion as he directed the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services to begin investigating such cases.
“The court finds this new rule was improperly promulgated by defendants and interferes with or impairs — or threatens to interfere with or impair — the legal rights and privileges of PFLAG members and their families,” Meachum wrote. “The DFPS rule was given the effect of a new law or agency rule, despite no new legislation, regulation or even valid agency policy.”
The attorney general’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the state is likely to appeal the ruling, as it did with the previous injunction.
Child abuse investigations are based on complaints or tips received by the state. As of Sept. 9, DFPS had closed eight of 12 investigations of parents of transgender children. The other four remained open.
The ruling Friday essentially puts a stop to all investigations as long as parents claim membership in PFLAG. According to PFLAG’s website, an annual donation of $50 or more gives a person national membership to the organization.

That is a seriously big problem. And not just with drones.

Putin took a first bite of Ukraine back in 2014. This was after specific treaty guarantees to respect Ukrainian sovereignty given in return for Ukraine getting rid of it’s nuclear weapons.

Putin is trying to take another bite of Ukraine with his February 2022 invasion.

His word is meaningless. And there is no reason to believe that he, or his successors would not try a third time or a fourth, when it suits them.

So, yes, one of the issues with ending the war, is how to protect Ukrainian sovereignty in a meaningful way.

One dependable way would be to remove the ability of Russia to interfere. Whatever that means.

This is a problem we are facing as well after having tfg trample over US agreements worldwide.

It’s a bit doom and gloom, but here is the synopsis:

The world thinks it’s in an energy crisis today and indeed there are shortages in some places but the world is undergoing an energy crisis more fundamental than the simple shortage happening today in Europe. A shortage can be remedied.
The larger problem is that oil use began to decline from 48% of total world energy consumption after 1977. This was the beginning of the end of the oil age. Per-capita oil consumption has been flat since since 1985). That means that individual worker productivity is not growing as it did before the oil shocks.

The world thinks that an energy transition is underway but fails to understand that transitions are additive. The relative percent of fuels changes but volumes rarely decrease. There is little chance that this transition will take 30 years instead of the century or longer period for earlier transitions.

The real crisis today is the economic expression of the reality that energy is the economy.

As living standards fall, mass immigration and civil unrest will probably increase. The oil age has been ending for 50 years but there is no substitute for oil. Wind, solar and nuclear only address electric power generation which accounts for only 18% of world energy consumption. Even if we could magically transform 100% of electric power to non-fossil energy sources, this would not address the other 82% of energy use that society needs.

The medium- to long-term should be increasingly affected by limited supply growth. The market will send price signals to producers based on its sense of medium-term supply urgency. Prices will rally until inflation and a fragile economy end the rally. This is the dialectic that I expect will dominate oil markets in 2022 and probably beyond.

There is great opportunity for those who understand this pattern and for scientists who are skilled at finding new oil supply. The successful geologist, geophysicist and engineer of the present and future will not be a specialist who only makes maps and interprets subsurface data. Analysis and understanding of macro trends of global supply, demand, price structure and economics will be needed.

The age of oil as the dominant energy source may be ending but non-fossil energy will be largely limited to electric power generation which represents only 18% of primary energy consumption today. Those who can help provide solutions for the remaining 72% will be in great demand.

We have some friends who are retired geologists who made their nut with the oil industry. They worked primarily in the Dakotas but did very, very well and now have vacation homes in Mexico and Hawaii, as well as a condo in Seattle they use for connecting flights as their main home is in Montana.

Because our own interior political upheaval appears to be MAGA-idiots wanting to go back to the 17th century (I still expect someone to start saying they want witch trials) we take our eye off the global ball.

I too expect American lives to get even more difficult as we have to reckon our international dependence with the nativists idea of building a wall around the country and hiding our heads.

I am not a scientist and my knowledge is very limited. Why can’t nuclear, wind, solar, hydro-electricity provide the energy needed to power our modern economy? Of course there are non-fossil fuels (such as alcohol) that contribute to global warming but are renewable. Aren’t these alternatives sufficient?

I’m objecting to the doom porn we keep getting subjected to on the subject… frankly on many subjects of importance to center-left Americans. Just that fact that the king of doom and gloom on LGF labeled something as doom and gloom, immediately puts it in my disregard category. I’m tired of it. I want actual solutions, not complaints, worrying, and finger pointing.

The sky is always falling and nothing we can do. Civilization is falling and we have to lower our expectations and live “simpler lives”. The US is collapsing, while apparently Russia and China are A-OK… A whole lot of “tradition wisdom” thrown around right now is complete and utter horseshit.

The solution is obvious: lead simpler lives that take less energy.

Your life is being shaped by these issues.

Next time a Republican wins campaigning on the horrors of high gasoline prices, inflation, and so on, the reality of life in the 21st century will manifest itself in the politics we are experiencing.

Convincing Americans to lead a different lifestyle maybe appears as doom and gloom to you.

I will never forget Trump urging his supporters to vote twice in 2020 because mail in votes were “insecure”. We have several examples of Republicans using mail-in votes on behalf of deceased family members. In 2018, there was a scandal in North Carolina where McCrae Dowless illegally collected absentee ballots in the 9th Congressional District election in 2018, forcing North Carolina officials to throw out the results of the election and order a new one.

Okay, I’m a retired Professional Geoscientist, so let me take a swing at it:

He states that renewables will never supply more than 18% of total energy needs.

True/Not True/ or Needs Clarification?

Correct answer? Needs Clarification.

18% is the present mix of electricity in total energy consumption.

Can this be expanded? Of course it can. Could you use electricity to heat your house? Dry your clothes? Cook your food? Of course you can!

Can you improve battery density so that that it can support long distance transportation? Of course you can! It’s just a science/logistics problem.

Are you familiar with A Better Way? It’s was an Israeli concept that posited battery stations instead of gas stations, where a standardized battery, agreed upon as an industry standard could be swapped out in less than a minute with the nearly-spent being transported to a rack for recharge.

That’s at least a decade old and got shut down by Shell, BP, and Elf/Aquitane.

Could it work? Of course it could! They had built a demonstrator station where the time to switch out a used battery for a new one was less than 45 seconds. So if you could replace all of that with all of that with renewables, are we still looking at 18%? Of course not.

I was nearly 30 (and just graduated from law school) before I learned how to drive because the people who tried to teach me wanted me to use a stick. I simply could not do it. It was incomprehensible. So I paid for driving lessons myself and learned on an automatic. Fast forward a few decades and I learned that people on the autism spectrum can have motor coordination challenges and well, yeah, trying to learn on a stick was likely a Bad Idea. I drive now, but I can’t say I’m super enamored of it.
