There’s a reason the D-35 is called a Dreadnought. It has a depth of sound as big as a battleship. Gorgeous.

a snip:

“…Shortly after Hitler’s army entered Austria that year, my wife’s mother escaped to the United States. Under the protection of our laws, she too, was able to live without fear of persecution.

That protection is what distinguishes America from so many other countries. The protection of law - the Rule of Law - is the foundation of our system of government.

The Rule of Law means that the same laws apply to all of us, regardless of whether we are this country’s newest citizens or whether our [families] have been here for generations.

The Rule of Law means that the law treats each of us alike: there is not one rule for friends, another for foes; one rule for the powerful, another for the powerless; a rule for the rich, another for the poor; or different rules, depending upon one’s race or ethnicity or country of origin.

The Rule of Law means that we are all protected in the exercise of our civil rights; in our freedom to worship and think as we please; and in the peaceful expression of our opinions, our beliefs, and our ideas.

Of course, we still have work to do to make a more perfect union. Although the Rule of Law has always been our guiding light, we have not always been faithful to it.

The Rule of Law is not assured. It is fragile. It demands constant effort and vigilance.

The responsibility to ensure the Rule of Law is and has been the duty of every generation in our country’s history. It is now your duty as well. And it is one that is especially urgent today at a time of intense polarization in America.”

I was using mcrypt for private comments, so I’m now working on converting that code to use PHP’s openssl_encrypt and _decrypt.

Abbott’s misappropriating our taxes.

Texas has spent more than $12 million sending busloads of migrants to East Coast cities, according to the Texas Division of Emergency Management. And on Wednesday, Gov. Greg Abbott’s office announced that it had begun busing migrants to Chicago.

Documents from the emergency management department show that the state has already paid a total of $12,707,720.92 to Wynne Transportation to bus thousands of migrants from Texas border communities to Washington, D.C., and New York City, CNN first reported.

A department spokesperson confirmed the total to The Texas Tribune on Wednesday.

Openssl encryption is working. Didn’t expect it to be this simple! The code is actually much shorter than the old mcrypt code.

function encrypt($string) {
    $iv = openssl_random_pseudo_bytes(openssl_cipher_iv_length('aes-256-cbc'));
    $encrypted = openssl_encrypt($string, 'aes-256-cbc', base64_decode(LGF_OPENSSL_KEY), 0, $iv);
    return base64_encode($encrypted . '::' . $iv);
}
function decrypt($string) {
    list($encrypted_data, $iv) = explode('::', base64_decode($string), 2);
    return openssl_decrypt($encrypted_data, 'aes-256-cbc', base64_decode(LGF_OPENSSL_KEY), 0, $iv);
}

Ok, speaking of school funding in the last thread, my ex-boyfriend called and wanted to know if I knew which group had 50-odd people (including children) out on the sidewalk next to Changing Hands on McClintock Dr. in Tempe.

I’m all, “WHAT?”

The background is this. Save Our Schools is running a petition drive to get enough signatures to put the state’s new voucher plan on the ballot and hopefully get it voted into nonexistence. According to ex-bf, there were 50 people out on the sidewalk and grass in front of the shopping center where Changing Hands is at, telling people not to sign the petition.

I’m not sure if ex-bf thinks we semi-pro protesters have a website or something where we exchange tips or schedules (there isn’t) or if he thinks I keep track of this stuff (I don’t). But I did a quick Twitter search and I could not figure out who would do this, although there was one mention by a Tweeter of a bunch of exclusively white people protesting out in front of Changing Hands. In any case, I haven’t signed the petition (wasn’t super aware one was in progress) and told him I was going to drive over to Tempe to sign the petition and maybe talk to the protesters if they’re out there.

He all but said he didn’t want me talking to them because “You’re not going to convince them.” I KNOW THAT. I just want to know what group can get 50 people to protest in high 90s-100F temps on a Saturday afternoon in Tempe. If they’re not out there, I’m sure the Save Our Schools people will be happy to tell me, once I say, “my ex-boyfriend told me they were out there so I came to sign the petition and ask you guys who they are.” I’m not going to get into a fight. Besides, I needed to get around so I could go to the Phoenix Zine Fest and I can do this too.

This afternoon I was heading out to go running at a nearby track, but remembered the scraper and instead went to a road that has many white supremacist stickers on road signs. The Patriot Front stickers came right off, but the “Jesus Loves White Children” stickers from Slavic Storm were glued on and impossible to scrape with just the tool alone. Anyway, no one can really tell what the stickers say from a passing car, but pedestrians can. And the pedestrians tend to be international students walking from a campus close by to the local supermarket.

Ok, got back from signing the petition. There were ~10 protesters today. It’s 100 degrees outside. The protesters are homeschoolers, but they say they’re not organized. I think that’s bullshit and I told them so. You know, there is an advantage to always masking up, they can’t see who I am :).

The white male leader was wearing a GoPro, so I happily waved at it, and then proceeded to tell him that their signs were not fit for purpose because McClintock Dr. is 45 mph and they had too many words on their signs. I also noted that the TWO WOMEN who were down at the table a few hundred feet to the west told me that they were getting lots of attention and signatures because of the homeschool families.

After looking at their van, I believe they’re being organized by the Goldwater Institute based on the website: declinetosignarizona dot com. I don’t know why they couldn’t tell me the truth.

Then I drove over to the Phoenix Zine Fest, which was actually very close to my house. I spent about an hour there, looking at zines and then buying them. We have a zine distro, but it’s in downtown Phoenix, kind of a long way to go for me. But the distro did bring a zine I had seen on their website, so I was happy.

I have to admit I was glad to get out of the venue because I was wearing a N95 mask (there were lots of people and I didn’t want to take any chances), the venue was kind of warm, and I was sweating under the mask. But I did enjoy being out in a public venue for the first time since March 2020. (Well, except for protesting. But you all know how that is.)

re: #87 Barefoot Grin

This morning I put a scraper (3” blade) in my car.

If you can’t beat em by scraping maybe cover with a plain white sticker or label or gorilla tape…

The chopper was answering a distress call from the same boat. The Coast Guard crew immediately turned around and returned to base, where they confirmed that the chopper had been hit. The boat is a 75 footer so the owner is, or was, pretty affluent. No word on his party affiliation.

Man, when you upgrade from PHP 5 to PHP 8 there are a fuck-ton of breaking changes, and I’m starting to think my code contains every one.

Better written story than the CNN bilge.
Correction: The boat was a 40 footer, which is still pretty far up the goober income ladder. The chopper was hit in the rotor.

Looks like the Pelosi visit is bearing fruit.

I suspect that Azerbaijan had already met all their war goals last year and didn’t see much benefit to another war with Armenia. Even if they were to win. So they were likely happy with the de-escalation as well.

My wife and I went to the movies tonight and saw the horror film “Barbarian” starring Bill Skarsgard, Georgina Campbell and Justin Long.

I’ve found that I enjoy horror movies less as I get older because the main characters are inevitably idiots with almost zero critical thinking skills.

For example…

*minor spoilers follow*

There’s a scene near the end of the movie where one of the main characters gets away from the bad guy and has a chance to, you know, save themselves.

But instead they go back into the bad guys den to save some other guy they met just a few hours ago.

Now okay, I might go back in for a dear friend or loved one but someone I hardly know? Nope, it’d be peace out for me.

The cinematography was well done but unfortunately most of the film just fell into well worn horror movie cliches that make you groan at the stupidity of the people involved.

Two big cyclones battering islands this weekend.

712mm is a lot of rain.

I checked in on my favorite Tokyo-Shinjuku live streams this afternoon (late night Japan time) and the rain/lights/umbrella combinations made it look like Blade Runner again. Seems to be clear now though.

The race to the bottom of humanity has begun.

joke’s gonna be on Florida:

Nowrasteh adds, “I’ve been observing the escalating chaos on the border for the last 2 years. The situation is only made more chaotic by governors stepping [in] to fly migrants to parts of the country where they don’t want to go. Venezuelan migrants are integrating well. Their largest community is in Florida and many of the migrants flown to Martha’s Vineyard will eventually end up there.

That was purely aspirational and the capybara knew it.

It would have been very sad, but also very hilarious if he had hit the rotor and brought the bird down on top of him!
