Tom Hardy still does not have an Academy Award, but now he does have a gold medal from the 2022 Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open Championship. The 45-year-old actor, famous for his roles in Inception, Mad Max: Fury Road, and the Venom franchise, took home the top prize at the UMAC Milton Keynes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open on September 17.

Hardy competed as a “high-level blue belt” in the category of men 41-and-older. Per local paper the Milton Keynes Citizen, Hardy told one stunned opponent, “Just forget it’s me and do what you would normally do.”

In August, Hardy won another Jiu-Jitsu event-a competition in Wolverhampton for the REORG charity that he works with-where he defeated a 40-year-old fighter named Danny Appleton. Appleton told The Northern Echo, “He’s just a top guy-he’s very strong which surprised me and a very good fighter. But he’s probably the toughest competitor I’ve had — he certainly lived up to his Bane character, that’s for sure.” Hardy apparently has ties to North East England through his wife, actress Charlotte Riley, as well as one of his grandfathers.

I remember, when I was sitting Nuclear Alert in the early 80’s, fully prepared to take off and sling Nuclear Devastation on the Godless commies, that I thought to myself “Hey! I’ve got a Top Secret/No Dissemination to Foreign Nationals/Emergency War Order clearance! I’ll just declassify it with my Big Brain and make a little Walking Around money by selling it to the Russkies!”

The reality that Trump is never going to allow to sink into his addled brain is that he made himself a target for these various criminal and civil troubles with his need to prove he was “better” than the black guy who made him feel bad that one night in 2011. In a reality where he chose to pass on running in 2016, nobody was interested enough in his finances to realize that the numbers he was telling the tax assessors bore no relation whatsoever to what he was telling the banks holding his numerous debts.

Stillwater is one of the prettiest parts of Oklahoma.

When I was at Artillery Officers Basic Course in Ft Sill, Oklahoma (decidedly not one of the prettier parts of Oklahoma), another attendee was a graduate of OSU. He had been born and raised in Oklahoma, went to college in Oklahoma and joined the Army so he could finally get out of Oklahoma.

In the infinite wisdom of the Army, he was assigned to the Field Artillery Branch and sent to the basic course in… Oklahoma.

At the end of the course the Army, after reviewing your requests for assignment, provides you with your next assignment.

In order to get out of Oklahoma, he requested Korea. Which at the time was considered a hellhole assignment. The Army, in its infinite wisdom assigned him to the new MLRS unit. Which was based in, yup… Ft Sill, Oklahoma.

I doubt that he ever made it out of Oklahoma.

A bunch of Conspiracy Theory sources are claiming that there is going to be an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse) event this coming weekend. Most are claiming it will be a Carrington Event. (Solar Flare)

I haven’t yet figured out why they chose an event that they most likely couldn’t even spell originally. The only thing I can think of is that it gives them an excuse to wear tinfoil hats.

One important thing to keep in mind with Russia - Putin only mobilized 300K more troops. He originally sent 200K. By most estimates, between the 54K dead and the estimated wounded, he’s lost 150K in Ukraine. So he basically is backfilling the 150K he lost and adding another 150K to cover his expected losses.

This isn’t augmentation, or an increase in force. It’s replenishment.

Ted Cruz Takes Credit for Legislation He Voted Against
“While speaking at Texas Tech University on Sept. 1, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took credit for an ‘incredible victory,’ saying he led the fight to fund a project that he voted against,” WCPT reports.

“The expansion of I-27 is estimated to create thousands of jobs and provide direct links for local and international trade by reducing congestion on the highway in the Eastern region of Texas.”

“Even though the U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed the legislation by a 68-31 vote in March, Cruz failed to mention was one of the Senators who voted against the bill was him.”

Worker was dead in department store’s bathroom for 4 days: authorities

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A 63-year-old worker died in the public bathroom of a South Carolina department store, but her body was not discovered for four days, authorities said.

Bessie Durham, a janitor at the Belk at Columbiana Centre, was found dead Monday, investigators said. Her cleaning cart was outside the restroom.

Durham was last seen Thursday at work and her body was found shortly after her family filed a missing person report, Columbia Deputy Police Chief Melron Kelly, told WIS-TV

Nobody wants to pee in a department store bathroom?

About 25 years ago, I worked at a now-closed Sears store in the Portland, OR metro area. The public bathrooms were always kept very clean; That was something the store manager insisted upon because he recognized that lots of people wander into a store just to use the john and if it looks clean, it makes a positive impression. It may sound weird, but on that score, he was right.

According to the Russian law the potentially mobilizable can’t leave Russia. The message from the Kremlin sources has nevertheless been, that the borders will stay open for them for now (I think to weed out the potentially “active” elements unwilling to become cannon fodder — easier to get rid of them this way than to have trouble with them later). Still, many (not all) men in the Moscow airports are being interrogated about military-related matters. See no info yet on whether some were prohibited from leaving.

re: #86 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

The reason I ponder this is because she is 33 and the problem with celebrity is that the onus on women is too look young and sexy, which she does well, but time is not on the side of celebrity women.

It’s all part of the asymmetry in life, how women are judged more harshly in regards to looks and aging.

A musician can of course become better as they age and I have no doubt she can too. But also I wonder if her Korean family is pressuring her to have babies. Societal pressure works against artists in general, and I suspect even more so for women in east Asia.

Yoon Kyung Cho studied at Julliard and continues to make a name for herself, but I wonder if she’s reached a point where her career has plateaued. In the world of serious music there are only so many positions at the top, and while a handful of cellists have become celebrities of a sort, it’s only a handful.

Trumpworld is about to run into reality. When you have spent decades of Criming, you are going to spend decades in jail.

We already have Tucker Carlson telling us that Watergate was an FBI Deep-State Plot.

You can well imagine how they are rationalizing all of this.

I used to go watch the Luchadores with my Latino neighbors in Hammond, Indiana, and was impressed by the costumes obviously hand-stitched together out of old curtain scraps and sofa coverings.

El Nacho Libre was not a great film, but it did bring tears of nostalgia to my eyes.

So apparently, after the visit from the Republican state house candidate yesterday afternoon, while I was gaming with my son last night, the Democratic candidate showed up and talked to my wife. Mrs. Fish says they had a pleasant conversation, and she discussed her concern about our kids going through active shooter drills and false alarms (we got an email from my daughter’s school about schools apparently being “swatted” now). I have to admit, candidates showing up in person to campaign for themselves is… not what I expected, even for Minnesota state politicians, but I respect that. I’m also glad Mrs. Fish got a chance to interact with the candidate I plan on voting for, so that she has a first-person reason to vote for her herself. She is proudly independent, and in any case, I wouldn’t want to feel like I’m telling her who to vote for, so now I feel more comfortable.

She is deaf so no amount of soothing talking is going to calm her down. So the vet has given us pills to mellow her down. We give them to her an hour or two before the appointment. He took the documents, claiming they were his.

FTFY. Not because they’re not classified; they certainly are. But because, as I’m sure you already know, it doesn’t matter. He took documents belonging to the US Government. Period. Full stop. Any claims that he made them his personal documents according to the Presidential Records Act are bunk. Even if those claims were valid - say, for example, handwritten notes on the documents - NARA still owns the documents, and he is given access to them. He doesn’t get to walk away with them and do whatever he wants with them.

Yeah, but maybe Trump will claim that since he thinks those documents are his, and has assumed all along that they are his (regardless of trivial facts like their “classification” status), they fall under the authority of the Presidential Mental Powers Act wrt to their actual status, so no crime applicable at all. Ever. Nohow….

(This is satire, of course, but it’s a good bet that TFG’s next line of “defense” over his illegal possession of the MAL documents will probably be something close)

That’s about the only defense Trump has left. He was found in possession of all those documents. That’s a crime. He mishandled those documents. Also a crime.

Additional crimes: the documents were classified, and carry specific penalties for espionage.

His lawyers can’t even do the pound on the table routine, without throwing Trump’s earlier lawyers to prosecutors and state bar associations for disbarment - as they lied on their official pleadings and reports to DOJ that all documents were returned, when that clearly wasn’t true.

I’m being genuine here, but it seems like the only other defense they could use is mental decline. Particularly after that Hannity interview.

I realize that Trump admitting any sign of illness or weakness is pretty much salt on a snail for him, but it seems like that would be a remote option that should be on the table. Even if it is put-on, like that mobster from NYC who used to walk around in a bathrobe feigning dementia.

And as everyone else has said: this motherfucker literally got on air, on the most watched news network, and basically claimed that telepathy is a method for US presidents to declassify documents.

It just boggles the imagination.

I also have to question Hannity’s motivations if he thought this was somehow going to help Trump. Unless it was just “Fuck it, I’ll have the doddering old fool on to con his sheep again, because I could use the ratings.”

Would love to see Trump go with a diminished capacity defense, but it isn’t going to happen. A real possibility is his lawyers throwing Trump aides under a bus by implying that they packed up a bunch of documents Trump wasn’t even aware of. It’s a lie, so they won’t actually put any testimony on, especially not Trump himself, but they just need to plant the idea in the minds of the jury in hopes of getting a mistrial, if not an acquittal.

In a footnote to the government funding fight, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) seems to be fighting a losing battle on his latest hobby horse: making it easier for the fossil fuel industry to get permits to rape the land. He made a deal with Schumer to secure his vote on the Inflation Reduction Act in August, making an agreement that the permitting bill would be attached to the continuing resolution. Unfortunately, no one else made that agreement. House leadership seems not to want to pick a fight with the growing group of members who are asking that the bill be left out, and now a group of liberal senators are joining that call.

They’re not saying they’ll shut down government if it’s attached. They’re not even saying they’re implacably opposed to it. They’re saying they “believe such important issues should be examined through detailed committee consideration and a robust floor debate separate from the urgent need to see that the government stays open.” Meanwhile, Republicans whose support Manchin would need to get it passed show no interest whatsoever in helping him. Manchin promised that he would finally release the language for his bill on Wednesday. As of early Wednesday afternoon, it hadn’t materialized.

He may have decided to take his ball and go home. He had a bit of a meltdown over how everybody is picking on him Tuesday. He told reporters that he had “never seen” such an example of “revenge politics” from the left, with Sen. Bernie Sanders and the “extreme liberal left siding up with Republican leadership” to oppose his plan. It’s not about his plan, he insisted. “It’s revenge towards one person—me,” Manchin said.
“I’m hearing that the Republican leadership is upset,” he added. “They’re not going to give a victory to Joe Manchin. Well, Joe Manchin is not looking for a victory.” Yeah, the prospects for that bill being forced through in the continuing resolution are fading by the minute.

The most likely possibility is that we see an endless barrage of different excuses, several contradictory, until the US media finds one that they can hammer enough until Americans accept once again that Donald Trump is above the law. This will become easier once he declares his candidacy and then all the panels and think pieces can raise the possibility that all of this is just a politically motivated witch hunt.

After that, they can then run the panels and think pieces that talk about how he is a maverick candidate that shrugs off scandals that would sink normal politicians. Who wouldn’t want that guy as Emperor?

Well yeah, that is why Trump’s lawyers are just going to try to imply it; it’s a blatant lie. The truth gets Trump sent to prison. If just one Trumper who assumes Trump is innocent and the “Deep State” is persecuting him gets on the jury, they can get a mistrial.

Trump’s lawyers have been desperately trying to not argue for the crazy stuff Trump says in interviews and on social media, but when he gets indicted for stealing these documents, for the life of my I don’t know what his defense could possibly be. I’m guessing his lawyers will make vague suggestions that maybe the documents were planted, and this is just a political witch hunt, rest their case, and hope a juror who distrusts the government will refuse to find him guilty.

Prosecution: “If these documents were planted, then why is Mr. Trump’s very distinct handwriting in Sharpie marker all over them?”

Gigante was notorious for mumbling nonsense, wearing pajamas and a robe outdoors, etc.

Trump’s making coherent statements (for him) as to taking and storing documents at MAL. There’s no way he could try the Gigante defense, and in any case, it’d have the same outcome.

Gigante was found guilty - and ultimately admitted that the insanity defense was a ruse to delay/avoid prison. He got additional time slapped on his sentence and died in prison.

Yeah, but maybe Trump will claim that since he thinks those documents are his, and has assumed all along that they are his (regardless of trivial facts like their “classification” status), they fall under the authority of the Presidential Mental Powers Act wrt to their actual status, so no crime applicable at all. Ever. Nohow….

As I understand it, that should be fine (there are, after all, personal papers in there). We the people shouldn’t care if he goes through the unclassified papers to determine which have any executive privilege—that still doesn’t affect the case for obstruction. Nor should it affect the determination of personal papers—-if they were generated by other departments, they are, by definition, not personal papers.

5’10?

I didn’t know you could stack shit that high.

Trump’s statements indict himself on taking the documents at issue. He directed that they be taken.

This wasn’t an accident where they were grabbed by mistake. They were purposefully taken. Trump just helped the DOJ prove its case against Trump.

Again.

re: #145 No Malarkey!

That defense especially won’t work if Trump’s fingerprints are on the documents.

I think what’s funny is, the DOJ gave Cannon this out when she issued her awful order. She said, no, I am going full speed ahead on this, I dare you to tell me otherwise. The 11th Circuit stepped in and handed her her ass and said, you should’ve taken the DOJ’s out when they gave it to you. So now they’ve essentially gotten the exact same result as they would have if she had accepted their motion for reconsideration, except she looks like a partisan hack in front of the entire world, thanks to being eviscerated by the circuit court.

re: #103 Eventual Carrion

Just finished doping the oldest cat. She has a vet appointment in a couple hours. She absolutely HATES going to the vet. She hisses and won’t come out of her transport, fights the whole time. She is deaf so no amount of soothing talking is going to calm her down. So the vet has given us pills to mellow her down. We give them to her an hour or two before the appointment. Will see how they work this time.

I had to take a cat to the vet once. The cat was great in the car and at the vet. Half way to the vet I had to go thru a tollbooth. I’d done this many times before without issue. This time, however, said cat decided she wanted to hang with the toll guy so she jumped out of the car window right into the tollbooth. Before I could completely freak out, Tollbooth Guy picked her up and handed get back to me.

So that was a fun outing.

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Reuters) - The white woman who falsely told police she was threatened by a Black bird-watcher in New York City’s Central Park has lost a lawsuit accusing her former employer Franklin Templeton of illegally firing her and portraying her as racist.

In a decision on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Ronnie Abrams rejected Amy Cooper’s claim that she was defamed when Franklin Templeton and its Chief Executive Jenny Johnson referred on three occasions to the incident and said they did not tolerate racism. A video of the incident went viral.

The Manhattan judge also said Cooper failed to prove she was fired in May 2020 because of her race or gender, and without the kind of thorough investigation once done into a male employee’s alleged offensive conduct.

I’m sure there’s something to do with revenue that could involve the Trump brand having some intrinsic value, but it doesn’t matter when you’re discussing the value of a property vis-a-vis what it should be worth to someone else.

NEW YORK, Sept 22 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Thursday ordered the dismissal of a National Rifle Association lawsuit accusing a New York regulator of stifling its speech by pressuring banks and insurers to stop doing business with the gun rights group.

In a 3-0 decision, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said the NRA failed to prove that Maria Vullo, the former superintendent of New York’s Department of Financial Services (DFS), “crossed the line between attempts to convince and attempts to coerce.”

Vullo had in April 2018 called upon banks and insurers to consider the “reputational risks” of doing business with gun rights groups, following the fatal shooting two months earlier of 17 people at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

She later fined Lloyd’s of London and two other insurance businesses more than $13 million, and they agreed to stop selling NRA-endorsed products that New York considered illegal.

The 11th Court essentially said to Judge Cannon, “Oh, for fuck’s sake, you were actually serious? This is stupid, no.”

Cannon, a Trump appointee who is obviously sympathetic to him, responds with the editorial equivalent of screaming “SMOKE BOMB!” and basically eliminates any chance Trump has to appeal to a Supreme Court he helped build, and in theory would be in the bag for him.

Do I have this right?

Also, I missed this, but how was Trump able to get in front of Cannon in the first place? I remember reading about some venue shopping going on. Was it just luck of the draw, or did another MAGAt judge or court employee gin up the system for him?

As far as I know, it was luck of the draw; he filed it in her district, intending for it to go directly to her, but lawtwitter told me that MDFL has some kind of a rotation system for cases, so there was actually a chance that it could’ve landed with somebody who isn’t completely in the tank for Trump.
