A boat is just a hole in the water you throw money into.

He’s got that sinking feeling.

SNL star Colin Jost revealed this weekend that the decommissioned Staten Island Ferry he purchased with fellow Staten Islander Pete Davidson will be named “Titanic 2.”

“This is why idiots should not be allowed to do things,” Jost said on Late Night with Seth Meyers Friday night.

“Pete and I bought this boat, and like — there’s so many immediate decisions you have to make,” he said. “You have to create a financial entity to deal with this boat.

“And so we’re on a call and I’m just like, ‘Alright, well how about Titanic 2?’” Jost said to laughs.

“And everyone on the call is ]like, ‘Oh that’s great, let’s do that!’”

Although the comedian had a laugh at taking the moniker of the doomed British Ocean liner that sank into the ocean, the name has not been a hit with insurers.

“We’re looking for insurance — which we have to buy because it’s a giant deathtrap boat,” he said. “And then every insurance company’s like, ‘It’s called Titanic 2?’”

Jost and Davidson, who left ‘SNL’ last year after 8 seasons, purchased the decommissioned ferry in January, winning it at auction from the city for a mere $280,000. The paid hopes to turn the boat into a nightclub.

You know crime is getting out of hand when the criminals are wearing matching outfits. This is surreal.

They’re the Green Goblin Gang — and the furious mom of one of their victims says the fiends were “complete animals,” randomly attacking her daughter on her birthday.

Newly released video captured the bizarre group of female robbers wearing full-body, neon green leotards as they punched and tossed around two 19-year-old women on a Times Square subway train about 2 a.m. Sunday. The victims were robbed of a cellphone and handbag, cops said.

“She said she was attacked by aliens, and I didn’t know what she was talking about,” the mother of one of the victims told The Post on Monday.

“Yesterday was her birthday,” said the distraught mom, who asked that she and the victims remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation. “This is how she spent her 19th birthday. I hope they get what they deserve and then some because it’s disgusting.”

The video posted on social media shows about six females dressed in green tossing around one of the teenagers and punching the other repeatedly in the face. Some of the attackers are also wearing hoods with face masks. They are still in the wind.

I was going to say “why is he wasting his money?”, but since TFG never pays his lawyers, usually, I guess they might as well toss another useless* suit into the Inbox….

*IANAL, but this sounds like the typical Trumpian BS (surprise!) - make a BFD announcement about some dire-sounding lawsuit, which would take years to wend its way through the courts - if they would even accept it - but in the meanwhile, grift the rubes for a “legal defense fund”…

[ADD] (see IANAL disclaimer above): it’s my understanding that (for good or ill), US law sets the bar for “defamation” of “public figures” absurdly high - WAY higher, IMO, that The Orange Anus would ever be able to detail, even if this suit was anything other than a grift. Education on the matter will be appreciated.

After Arizona began to enforce one of the strictest abortion bans in the country, a 14 y.o. girl was denied a life saving prescription she depends on, because it is also used to end ectopic pregnancies (which are 100% nonviable and fatal to women).

From an LA Times article in July concerning that very drug:

“That’s what was shocking to me,” said Schwarz, a 27-year-old who lives in Tysons Corner, Va. “In a state where I thought I was relatively protected regardless of what the Supreme Court decided, I found out I wasn’t.”

Somehow she failed to understand that this is what happens when you vote in a Republican governor. Of course, that election was prior to the Dobbs decision. But I hope Democrats use this as a constant warning that no modern day Republican can be trusted when it comes to women’s rights.

That seems a bit cruel—until you realize that you in fact are reading A Modest Proposal. To be clear, The Onion is not trying to compare itself to Jonathan Swift; its writers are far more talented, and their output will be read long after that hack Swift’s has been lost to the sands of time. Still, The Onion and its writers share with Swift the common goal of replicating a form precisely in order to critique it from within.

Rand Paul declines to debate Charles Booker on KET

Republican U.S. Sen. Rand Paul did not respond to an invitation to debate Democratic challenger Charles Booker on Kentucky’s statewide public television network, KET.

The forum, scheduled for Oct. 3, was the only scheduled appearance between the two candidates. Paul is running for his third six-year term in the U.S. Senate.

In a statement, a representative from KET said Paul had met candidate criteria and was invited to the debate but his campaign had not responded to the invite by the deadline. Instead, Monday’s episode of Kentucky Tonight will only feature Booker.

Paul was asked by WKYT earlier this week if voters will have a chance to see him debate Booker. In response, Paul said his campaign was “troubled by some of the advocacy for violence coming from the campaign and that’s given us some pause.”

In a statement, Booker responded that Paul’s use of “violence” to characterize Booker’s campaign was a “dog whistle.”

hi

It’s been two days since I inflicted photographs on y’all, so here’s a few.

We are in Tadoussac, Québec tonight. We will take the car ferry across the Saguenay River tomorrow.

We were finally able to pick up a tour book near the end of our trip from Labrador City to Tadoussac. Reading the book, it notes you should never take a two-wheel drive passenger car on provincial highway QC-389 north of the Manic-5 dam, because the road is unpaved for about 100km, and the section near the Labrador border is narrow, twisting, and dangerous. “Only the most adventurous should attempt this route.” QC-389 is 567km long, and there are almost no businesses or homes along the route.

google.com

That’s the two day route. The dot in the middle (Le Relais Manic Outardes) is not actually a hotel. I gotta hand it to my wife to be able to find places to stay when planning trips (she’s had us in a dockside room, sharing an apartment with someone else, a hunting lodge, a brothel, a hiking base camp, and a country club).

What it is, is an overflow barracks for Hydro-Québec workers at the Manic-5 dam. It is several rooms connected to a common bathroom and shower, with a chow hall (“restaurant”). Hydro-Québec rents this out to deranged Americans on QC-389 when they are not using it.

Scary Québec Sign on QC-389 (winding dirt road 67km)
Gagnon, Québec (ghost town)
Manic-5 Dam, the largest multi-arch dam in the world

I could not get a photograph of “the Eye of Québec” impoundment behind the dam: There was no good place for a photograph. (As large as it is, you really need to be above it to get a good picture.)

St. Lawrence Estuary

The end of QC-389. We reached the St. Lawrence Estuary, then turned right to head to Ontario and Michigan.

Perhaps that’s why we got so many looks from people driving a Smart where no Smart has gone before.

It should also be noted that this is not a failure of targeting. The Little Dictator That Could isn’t stupid enough to actually shoot directly at Japan or Japanese assets. It’s to send a message that Japan is easily within the range and capabilities of North Korea’s weapons.

Many things are closed in Québec today due to the provincial election. There is a whole lot of confusion in the polls here as to whether the Conservatives or a coalition of left-leaning parties will come out on top.

They note that the Parti Quebecois (the separatist party) has the fewest seats in fifty years, and will lose more seats because the party leader was caught not paying his taxes, which tanked what little support for PQ (they hold seventeen seats in the national assembly and they may have none after today).

Additionally, another candidate was caught yesterday stealing campaign materials from another candidate, and that is expected to end the thief’s career.

“(The Satanic Temple) venerates, but does not worship, the allegorical Satan described in the epic poem Paradise Lost - the defender of personal sovereignty against the dictates of religious authority,” the lawsuit states.

The group also describes The Satanic Abortion ritual as a “protective rite” for the woman, intended to help them through any “notions of guilt, shame and mental discomfort.” The ritual includes meditations, recitation of the temple’s tenets and the abortion procedure.

In both lawsuits, the temple writes that it is advocating on behalf of female members “who are involuntarily pregnant.” It also states the women “wish to remain anonymous due to the risk of violent retribution from domestic terrorists motivated by animosity to proponents of abortion.”

Neither “new”, nor “insanity”, because this kind of nonsense IS politically useful. It’s helped to get Republicans elected everywhere in the country.

There’s a bit more to this Republican nonsense than its political utility. After all, when Lyndon Johnson would have rumors put out that his election opponent was a pigfucker, nobody got all swivel-eyed loon about so and so *really* being a pigfucker.

It’s a strange cultish thing of going all-in on obvious lies, perhaps as a group bonding exercise.

re: #88 Romantic Heretic

Truth is an absolute defense to defamation. More importantly, a comparison to Hitler - if such a statement was made - fails, because the test is for:

1) A provable statement of fact;
2) That is false;
3) Is definitively damaging to the plaintiff’s reputation or business; and
4) (if the plaintiff is a public figure) was made while knowing it was false, or with “reckless disregard” for whether or not it was true.

Comparing someone to Hitler is not “a provable statement of fact” because no one can LITERALLY BE Hitler. Whatever the implications are of calling someone Hitler, it isn’t defamation, because, as we are so fond of saying, there can be only one.

This just dropped from the Daily Beast, and of course it’s absolutely no surprise.

‘Pro-Life’ Herschel Walker Paid for Girlfriend’s Abortion

The woman has receipts—and a “get well” card she says the football star, now a Senate candidate, sent her.

Herschel Walker, the football legend now running for Senate in Georgia, says he wants to completely ban abortion, likening it to murder and claiming there should be “no exception” for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.

But the Republican candidate has supported at least one exception—for himself.

A woman who asked not to be identified out of privacy concerns told The Daily Beast that, after she and Walker conceived a child while they were dating in 2009, he urged her to get an abortion. The woman said she had the procedure and that Walker reimbursed her for it.

She supported these claims with a $575 receipt from the abortion clinic, a “get well” card from Walker, and a bank deposit receipt that included an image of a signed $700 personal check from Walker.

The woman said there was a $125 difference because she “ball-parked” the cost of an abortion after Googling the procedure and added on expenses such as travel and recovery costs.

Additionally, The Daily Beast independently corroborated details of the woman’s claims with a close friend she told at the time and who, according to the woman and the friend, took care of her in the days after the procedure.

I know the Sen/Rev Raphael Warnock might be a bit squeamish about going on the warpath with that information, but he really shouldn’t be.

My anecdotal political polling by seeing what political yard signs are out and in what number while driving rural roads in western PA. (Today was north of Pittsburgh in the general region around Kittanning and west towards Butler.)

Most seen:
Doug Mastriano - often by itself.

In comparison Shapiro signs were generally grouped with signs for the other Democratic candidates.

Oz and Fetterman signs seen in roughly equal numbers.

Not many “Trump 2024”, “Don’t Blame Me I voted for Trump”, or “Trump Won” stuff. One business along US-422 with tons of that stuff up. And maybe passed one house with a few Trump signs.

Overall, I’d say there are fewer yard signs out than I’ve seen in the past few elections. Might still be early. Might be from changing residence across the state. Or might just be that the usual enthusiasm the nuts have for coating yards with stuff is not there.

I won’t say there is a lack of outward patriotism* since plenty of homes and businesses are flying US flags. Most of them properly.

* - And I don’t hold at all that patriotism or caring for one’s country requires one to make such displays or such a display makes you automatically a better citizen than another.

He may be afraid of elevating Booker in public sentiment if viewers compare the performances or see both of them on the same stage; this way he figures that the audience will be significantly reduced and far less attention will be paid to his opponent. He won’t be treating him as an equal, but as a minor nuisance who can be ignored.

My brother texted me, said that mom wanted him to take her over to JoAnn’s so she can buy elastic so she can sew it into her new bras (that don’t fit) since she hadn’t heard from me about bras.

Well, blergh. She wanted Playtex Cross Your Heart bras, which are not available in the USA and it appears they’re only available in parts of Europe. Her former Playtex bras don’t fit. So that’s out. And she can’t be sewing anything into bras because she’s legally blind. I called my brother up and we (I) came to the conclusion that I just needed to order a bunch of different bras, size 38B, so she can try them on. Which I did, for delivery Wednesday. So we’ll see.

What I wish I could do is buy her the bras I wear, but they don’t have hooks and eyes in the back. And she would probably have difficulty pulling them over her head. In fact they’re the very brand of bras that Rod Dreher was whinging about this weekend, to wit:

I never knew my underwear was going to be the downfall of civilization.

What is really stupid about Musk’s tweet and conservative support of it is that no way the Russians would agree to it. They, like their Republican friends, would ask for amendment, after amendment, until the agreement became the exact opposite of how it started. The Russians will insist on peace the day before they are defeated. Musk is not tweeting in good faith (and probably never has).

Eight minutes after the polls closed here in Québec, CTV calls an outright majority government for the Conservative Party. The question now is whether the Liberal Party loses its official opposition party status.

The total number of seats required for a majority in the National Assembly is 63. The predicted range of seats for the Conservatives is 76 and 98. Parti Quebecois may be wiped out completely.

That lack of good faith is exactly what to expect. At its core, political conservatism (and Musk is exactly that) is the desire to uphold an unjust status quo in the face of pressure to reform.

All arguments in favor of that are axiomatically dishonest.

The Conservatives were the majority going into this election. It would appear the Liberal Party has retained its official opposition status, though it looks like the party leader is going down in defeat. Parti Quebecois (the separatist party) has won one riding (down from seventeen). Québec Solidaire (the democratic socialist separatist party) has won two seats.

121
Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Oct 3, 2022 • 5:24:39pm

Political analysis seems to indicate the Conservative Party message of “dirty immigrants who don’t speak French and won’t work and pandemic restrictions are crap and should never have been proposed” (the same message as the GOP) resonated with Québec voters. Traditional Liberal Party ridings are being flipped to Conservative.

The weird thing about the Conservative campaign here is the Premier (and party leader) insists on giving all his speeches in both French and English, saying Québec is for everyone (except those dirty lazy immigrants). None of the other party leaders tried to appeal to English speakers at all (78% of respondents in the last census said they were only French speakers). Writing off that big of a section of the electorate by the other parties seems to be a poor decision.

I’ve been gone today, and missed three whole threads! Good grief! Was able to get the Omicron booster (Moderna this time; all my other four shots were Pfizer) and the flu shot. Glad to have that behind me! Almost all of Illinois is now low transmission of Covid, and some of the plexiglass is coming down. Some people still wear masks, and I do most of the time in public, indoors. Flu season hasn’t started yet, and I heard no coughing or sneezing. Thank goodness!

Illinois is doing what it can to respond to the abortion crisis. Illinois clinics are reporting 3x the case load as other states’ (IN, OH, KY, TN, MO) women come here for treatment. Planned Parenthood (St Louis Chapter) is creating a mobile clinic to move from place to place along the southern borders of the state. They are converting a mobile home to a clinic which will begin exams and counseling and abortion by pill by the end of this year, and hope to allow first term surgical abortions in the spring.

I heard an in depth interview with JB Pritzker (gov) while I was driving, and he is so good. He does not look the part, but he would be a superior president. There is a case where being a billionaire has not changed him at all, except increased his feeling of needing to make the world a better place. He was not my choice in the primary four years ago, but he sure is my choice for as far as he wants to go.

Got my omicron booster yesterday. Moderna as well. Feeling achy today but I’m just a big baby. Glad I got the shot the day before my day off.

And I totally agree re: Pritzker. But I’m still surprised he’s only leading in the polls by single digits. Bailey is a goon.

I received my mail-in ballot today too. In 2020 I registered for permanent vote-by-mail status.
