Things I learned today:

The original aniline dyes were discovered during attempts to synthesize quinine
.

.

The aniline dye used on, at least some, guitars, is not the original coal tar ‘aniline’:

Aniline is a chemical that is a by product of burning coal. The first synthetic dye (mauve, developed in 1856) was a coal tar product and contained the chemical aniline but the term “aniline” has been used to include other chemical type dyes. Today the term “aniline” is used mainly to differentiate natural dyes from the synthetic dyes. The synthetic dyes offered by The ReRanch do not contain the chemical aniline.

Not probably - Musk has been very clear that it’s going to happen.

If he takes over before the mid-term election, it could be very very bad. He’ll reinstate Trump’s account and he’ll have that giant hate-megaphone again, as we go into the election.

No matter what they say as rhetoric, they’re fine with abortion like they’re fine with sex:

if you have power you can do it; if you’re granted license by the powerful, you can do it; if the powerful forbid you, you cannot

Abortion is bad because it proposes that bodies…all bodies—those that fuck, those that are pregnant, those that are born…are not owned by the powerful.

That’s it.

How does the site handle picture sizing in a tweet? Does it account for the resolution of my monitor? Sometimes when I click on your icon to bring up a picture it is too small, but when I click on the expand icon it gets too big and the horizontal scroll doesn’t work, usually I can see the left half of the picture but not the right half. (half is a guess) The tweet in #33, the shofar is an example of this.

Delay, delay, get different judge, etc. I still don’t think it’s a done deal. Banks might try to get out of providing the financing at previously agreed upon terms. Rates are up by a lot since the deal was first proposed, and then purposefully delayed by Musk.

Reminds me of the friend who was in Vietnam talking about claymores.

One night, their perimeter got hit by an NVA attack and several of the claymores, when detonated, went off facing the US lines. It turned out that some very enterprising NVA sappers crawled into the defenses; picked up the claymores; and turned them around.

After the attack was repelled, all of the deployed claymores’ backs were painted with high visibility white paint. Then the soldiers were instructed to watch the paint. When the on-watch soldier saw the paint start to rise, they were to detonate that claymore.

He said the new procedure was effective.

The Counterrevolution Is Only Getting Started: On Race, Voting Rights, And More, The Conservative Justices Are On A Mission To Reshape Society
Sinking distrust of the high court post-Dobbs isn’t slowing down Alito and company, who appear poised to keep putting their ideological stamp on America.
by Cristian Farias
vanityfair.com

Yet Merrill v. Milligan, a racial gerrymandering case the Supreme Court is set to hear on Tuesday, is nothing to laugh at. In February, five conservative justices, sans Roberts, blocked a lower-court ruling that ordered the state of Alabama, which is 27% Black, to redraw its congressional maps so that two of its seven districts represent this demographic reality. The judges who ordered the state to go back to the drawing board said that Alabama officials were in violation of Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, which over time has been interpreted to require that states may not dilute Black voters’ ability to elect candidates of their choice. Yet to the state of Alabama, and possibly Roberts and his comrades, sorting districts by race is itself a form of discrimination. “That would require the States to prioritize race always in redistricting,” Alabama said in its brief filed with the court. “That is not what [Section 2] commands. And if it were, [Section 2] would be unconstitutional, for districts that sort voters on the basis of race ‘are by their very nature odious.’”

Did you catch that? Alabama is suggesting in no uncertain terms that a key section of the Voting Rights Act is itself unconstitutional if understood to allow Black voters to have political power that’s proportionate to their numbers. That’s catnip for Roberts, who may just finish what he started in 2013’s Shelby County v. Holder, once and for all dealing a death blow to the landmark civil rights statute.

That it is even this close with stark-raving loons as GOP candidates leading is a clear indication that a strong plurality of this country doesn’t want anything close to a representative democracy. What they are after is a specific agenda-driven paternalistic autocracy founded upon misogyny and racism under the guise of “freedom”.

What 35%-45% of this country hopes to achieve regarding a functioning government and related programs, military and infrastructure remains to be seen after their “victory.” But I wager the reality is something far different than they envision, probably closer to present-day areas of Florida. With thousands in need from natural disaster and simultaneously voting for “less government” it looks to be Democrats once again playing grown-up, actually building programs and government services needed.

Roberts may realize that it’s too late to preserve his reputation; or it’s as simple as the other 5 concluding that Roberts is irrelevant and they now control our nation. Anything to facilitate the fascist regime that the Federalist Society and its members are trying to institute in our nation.

Here is what he says:

We are all ready to go forward, that’s the most important thing. Here we are retreating now, we are all worried about it and the condition is not very good. All my guys are in a great mood. Now the offensive, we need the offensive. We are waiting, come. Since the 19th I have 7 people left out of 23. We are waiting, we need people. This is the most important resource. We are waiting for them. No need to be afraid.

I think I’m going to stop shortening links with lgf.bz.

The main reason I used it was for Twitter, and they’ve been using their own shortener on all links for a while now. There’s no real reason to keep using it.

100
Charles Johnson  Oct 4, 2022 • 1:54:06pm

The only reason I kept using it this long was because routing it through bitly I could get statistics on the number of clicks on those shortened links. But bitly’s API now limits how far back those statistics go, which makes it useless for really tracking the number of clicks.

Charles, any chance of Telegram auto-embedding? Yes, I’m aware of the reputation, rampant freedom for Nazis etc. Nevertheless, it’s what most of the “primary sources” (soldiers, politicians, correspondents etc.) for the U-R war are using as a medium, including the Ukrainians, so it’s nevertheless an important source of info.

108
Yeah Sure WhatEVs  Oct 4, 2022 • 2:05:50pm

From the WaPo:

The Supreme Court in July 2020 flatly rejected Trump’s bold claims of immunity from local law enforcement and congressional investigators. It turned aside multiple challenges to the 2020 election results brought by Trump and his allies. And post-presidency, the court turned down his request to keep certain White House documents from the congressional committee investigating the January 2021 riot at the capitol, with only Justice Clarence Thomas indicating he would support Trump’s plea.

Of course he did.

This also was in my news feed:

In Trump White House, classified records routinely mishandled, aides say

The jumble of secret and not-secret documents found by the FBI was typical of how Donald Trump handled records, former staffers said

No shit, Sherlock.

Oh, I see — you just plugged that URL into the “Embedded Content” dialog. That just creates an IFRAME for that URL at a certain preset size - but there’s no size info in the URL, so I don’t think it can be automatic. At least you can scroll down to see the rest.

I could add that URL format to the auto-replace code, so you’d only have to paste the URL into a comment.

The Nobel prize for physics was announced today, and it is for experimental work in quantum mechanics, and I’m watching all the media outlets stumble over themselves trying to explain it.

It’s not a topic that lends itself to easy popularization.

Even people who know better have to make silly statements. From a CNN article:

The winners’ work confirmed that “quantum mechanics actually has utility in real-world applications,” Michael Moloney, CEO of the American Institute of Physics, told CNN.

QM has been useful for nearly a century, but the applications are not something with which the layman has every-day interaction.
