from last thread:

re: #304 Dr Lizardo

There’s often a difference between literary and cinematic representations of a character. Years and years ago, I read a couple of the Perry Mason books - and only knowing Perry Mason through Raymond Burr’s performance, I couldn’t help but think, “Wow, Perry Mason’s kind of a dick”, at least compared to his TV incarnation.

True: and I’ll second the recc for the HBO series: Mathew Rhys’ Perry Mason is a lot closer to the original character than the rather blander Perry that Raymond Burr portrayed.

Apparently, that was Erle Stanley Gardner’s doing: from what I’ve read, Gardner had been quite unhappy with the potboiler Perry Mason movies which had been made in the 1930s (he had not been directly involved): so when he was approached for the idea of a TV series in 1956, he insisted on complete approval of every story and script: and made sure that, to conform with contemporary TV standards, the plots were toned down to minimize a lot of the original skirt-the-law antics book Perry Mason usually got up to. Classic TV, but (IMO) at the cost of making the main character somewhat, well: characterless.

Democrats are pathetic at striking back. The GOP has followed the same playbook every year for decades — Democrats weak on crime! Democrats elitist and cowards! Democrats raise taxes! Blacks are scary criminals! More guns would protect us! — and the Democrats have failed to figure out a competing strategy. Every Republican needs to be vilified. Unfortunately, the GOP base is fine with anything evil attributed to their leaders — they are fully on board with fascism

I think this remains to be seen. The fact that the race has tightened as much as it has tells me his tactics may be more effective at pleasing his base that was already voting for him anyway than motivating the general electorate.

Given how polarized the electorate is, that may be a viable strategy. It’s more a matter of getting your votes out, rather than persuading people.

Yes, I know, they mean Black people, because that’s all they ever mean when they say “criminals”. They want it to be OK to beat, rape, and murder Black people in general, but they’ll start with prison if it’s where they can get away with it.

I just got off the phone with Cindy at the county health dept. I had emailed a complaint about a pharmacy not putting me on the list for when they got the bivalent Moderna in, because I don’t have insurance. Cindy told me that she just got off the phone with a pharmacy that had wrong info and straightened them out, and made sure the right info went out again all over the state. I asked her which pharmacy. It was the same one. She said they’ve always been so good with the county, gone above and beyond, and it was an honest mistake. So I can go back there, or to the vax event at the fairground or the U campus…. So next 2 days in a row off work, I’m getting it. I’d even take a Pfizer, at this point.

Biden pardons thousands of people convicted of marijuana possession, orders review of federal pot laws

President Joe Biden pardoned thousands of individuals convicted of possessing marijuana, sending pot stocks soaring Thursday afternoon on the news.

The pardons apply only to federal offenders as well as those convicted in the District of Columbia, but Biden called on governors across the country to follow suit.

“Just as no one should be in a federal prison solely due to the possession of marijuana, no one should be in a local jail or state prison for that reason, either,” Biden said in a statement.

More than 6,500 individuals with prior convictions for simple marijuana possession were impacted by the pardons, said the official, and thousands more through pardons under D.C. law.

** At this time there is a nationwide shortage of Moderna bivalent vaccine, which limits the number of Moderna bivalent booster appointments Kaiser Permanente can offer. If you do not see availability for a Moderna bivalent vaccine appointment, you may schedule a Pfizer bivalent booster appointment instead. Fetterman is really good at this. I wish more Dems were this savvy.

I think his stint as Mayor of Braddock gave him a good feel for local politics and dealing with people as people and different sets of needs.

His time as Lt Gov of PA gave him some understanding of the state-level and legislative house procedures.

And the crap he got from the GOP-majority legislature while in the latter position probably means he has no illusions about cooperation with the GOP and no fucks left to give in dealing with them.

So arguably this man gets it as much as anyone does right now.

(And I hope he completely mops the floor with Oz. Though the later is going to get votes simply for being on the ballot with (R) next to his name. I don’t think Oz is popular at all in the state with the GOP base. He just isn’t running as a Democrat.)

Given how polarized the electorate is, that may be a viable strategy. It’s more a matter of getting your votes out, rather than persuading people.

That is what worked for Trump in 2016: he got enough of his people out in key places.

And it is why Trump’s strategy did not pan out in 2020: Biden voters were motivated.

Now voters are motivated over abortion rights.

Make no mistake, rescheduling marijuana will not be a rapid process. At least through executive branch administrative (paperwork) process. Lots of hurdles and hoops ahead.
There is a process and bureaucracy that must be navigated. And you can expect roadblocks along the way from government employees who do not agree with decriminalization

If a federal law was passed legalizing marijuana, it would be legal in all 50 states. That wouldn’t stop states from trying to pass laws to criminalize it, but that would lead to SCOTUS challenges of the Supremacy Clause, which historically haven’t gone well for the states.

This probably depends on the wording of the law. There is a difference between decriminalizing it and making it specifically legal. If they just amend the the current law to remove it from the schedule 1 list then it will probably be state by state, kind of like gambling and prostitution.

The story isn’t as bad as the headline may indicate. The debate is over what had a bigger effect on the excess deaths, refusal to vaccinate or lax masking and distancing. Not so much “gee what could be the difference between Democrats and Republicans”.

Especially since much of the period of the study is before vaccines were available (3/2020 - 12/2021).

CBN/THC gummies let her sleep well, and Rick Simpson Oil gummies have culled the nausea.

But experts are still puzzling over why these differences exist. Are lower vaccination rates among Republicans responsible? Or did mask use and social distancing guidelines prevent more deaths in counties run by Democrats?

Republicans who refuse vaccination are almost certainly also going to refuse social distancing and masks. There aren’t two distinct groups.

If a federal law was passed legalizing marijuana, it would be legal in all 50 states. That wouldn’t stop states from trying to pass laws to criminalize it, but that would lead to SCOTUS challenges of the Supremacy Clause, which historically haven’t gone well for the states.

And I know it’s still currently illegal in Texas, but even Republicans support it, so I think having it legalized at the federal level would allow it to pass in Texas.

I don’t think it suggests that they’re distinct groups. Masking and social distancing were made mandatory by Democratic governors, not by Republicans.Vaccination isn’t something governors can require (with some exceptions not relevant for the period in question), but individual (Republicans) can and did refuse it. Therefore we have the distinction in death/illness rates, with an uncertainty about which practice had a greater effect.

I think the larger observation (anecdotal on my part as a Kentuckian, admittedly) is that Republicans were and still are less likely to vaccinate, mask, and social distance. Our Republican representatives in DC, as well as in Frankfort, are proponents of alternative cures and claim natural immunity even though some of them have contacted the virus more than once.

To me it is absolutely clear that it really has not so much to do with whether a governor is Democratic or Republican. It has everything to do with the Republican/conservative/libertarian mindset of “don’t you dare tell ME what to do”.

It’s clearly more politically useful to do this now instead of on day 1, because of the short attention span of way too many voters. And we need Democrats to do politically savvy things to help fend off the Republican menace in the next election.
