Sisolak lost re-election bid for gov to piece of 💩 Sheriff Lombardo.
All 3 Dems defended their house seats.
MAGAT election denier Marchant lost.
DUNT Michele Fiore will probably lose as well.
I can live with Sisolak losing, he had impossible job during COVID. I don’t think Lombardo can mess things up too bad with Dems controlling state government.

Raphael Warnock Loses All Faith In God After Being Forced Into Runoff Against Herschel Walker

ATLANTA—Struggling to cope with his shock at the outcome of the midterm elections, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) reportedly lost all faith in God this week after being forced into a runoff against Herschel Walker. “What loving creator would create a world where I’m required to compete in not one, but two elections against a man like Herschel Walker?” said the visibly shaken Warnock, who removed his glasses in disbelief as he wrestled with the grave theological implications of being a mere percentage point away from losing to a former football player who allegedly threatened to murder his own family members. “Is this some sort of divine test? No, it is much, much worse. I have been a person of faith for 52 years on this planet and every moment was a rotten lie. There’s no meaning in this twisted universe. There is no God watching over us, and, surely, if there is any sort of deity, he is a wicked being who tortures us for His pleasure. Don’t call me reverend. I am not God’s emissary. I am His nemesis.” At press time, Warnock’s approval rating had edged upward several points after he was spotted tearing his clothes asunder and running naked into a river to curse the sky.

Montana voters rejected Referendum 131, the so-called Require Medical Care for Infants Born Alive referendum.

The referendum would have required doctors to attempt all medical intervention to save a dying infant, taking the child from its parents. It was pushed as one of the bullshyte “aborted but born alive” acts, that doctors are killing “born-alive” aborted “babies.”

Opponents of the referendum noted the stunning cruelty of taking an actual born-alive but dying infant from the arms of parents to impose doomed medical interventions that physicians would deem futile.

Infanticide is already illegal.

There’s a new front in the War on Christmas and it’s here in Japan. I took these in the shopping area at Ueno station.

That said, the Ameyoko shopping street was free of such nonsense. But it was very crowded. Lots of hole in the wall food joints, way too many places selling athletic gear and oh so very crowded. Also this:

I think this shop is directly under the tracks south of Ueno Station proper.

re: #49 ckkatz

I somehow doubt that there will be much GOP self-reflection over the midterm results.

[Embedded content]

The 2013 GOP did prepare a report on their losing the popular vote in 5 of the 6 past elections and their autopsy concluded they needed to improve their messaging to avoid irrelevance on the national stage. Then Trump came along and demonstrated that victory was possible by appealing to the worst of America’s instincts and you don’t need to win the popular vote nationwide anyway, courtesy of the EC. And the Independent State Legislature case pending before the Supreme Court could allow states to dispense with the popular vote entirely.

The Nazis never required self reflection, only the proper tools to control the levers of power. Tom Michels revealed the true GOP objective in his losing campaign for governor of Wisconsin: “Republicans will never lose another election after I’m elected governor.” Ron DeathSantis has provided a model for dictatorship within a state: gerrymandering and vote suppression. This is the approach coming to a GOP-run state near you. The question is whether our nation can overcome this poison and restore health to our national body politic, while the GOP is headed in the opposite direction.

I hear what you are saying.

There is a lot I disagree with Frum about.

I think that most of his policy preferences are very wrong (to put it mildly).
I certainly do not think highly of his decision to act as a speech writer for the shrub.
He was part of the GOP cheerleading to attack Iraq. And to paint over the completely mismanaged occupation.

There are things, though, that I think that he did correctly.

He seems to me to not be an operative, but rather an intellectual. (I view Turley as the opposite.)
He was a Never-Trumper very early on. And has been in the GOP wilderness since then.
He seems to be very pro-democracy.
I took his comment about the Trumpers being committed to power not democracy and willing to use violence to seize it, as a prescient warning. Remember that this was when a lot of centrists were playing down the threat from Trump.

There are things that I find him useful for:

He is highly knowledgeable and a keen observer on many things, particularly on the rightwing.
He is willing to say what he sees in an articulate and generally honest way.
He is thoughtful and seems to occasionally have interesting ideas. Even when I disagree with him (which is often), I am often stimulated to work through the why.

I do think that if the US is going to stay a democracy, we are stuck convincing folks like him to remain on our side.

Example: the Stable Diffusion very simple prompt “Santa Clause standing outside a house” will give a basic image.

But using three different artists (using the same “seed” in all examples as that is the variable that initiates the original random canvas):

Charles Schultz
William Hogarth
Bastien Lecouffe-Deharme

Trying to any image to look like the above just using descriptive words is quite difficult, but simply invoking an artist’s name gets you mostly there.

Hard to argue with you.

Particularly with what passes for “Political Analyists” these days. It seems to me that a lot of them have simply stapled themselves to what they think is the Overton Window and float mindlessly on it trying to offend no one.

Of course, then elections like this past mid-term happen.

And suddenly is a game of musical chairs where everybody suddenly realizes that the Overton Window has moved and they haven’t. So they try move to where they think it is and restaple themselves.

The reason AI images told to be “Escher” fail is the same reason why these AI images are not “art”, no matter what the purveyors of these tools claim.

Escher worked from the basic idea that humans have mental models of the real world. Then he subverted these models.

When you were a baby you had to learn to invert the images on your retinas, you learned what was up and down, what was left and right, that you fell down and not up, etc.

These AI tools have no such models of reality. They have no models at all. They are just complex networks trained to make images from noise. The training is done by associating some text with a final image, then the AI runs over and over to change the randomness of dots into that image. They store this training.

So when you present them with a new field of randomness, they simply repeat their training.

But humans do art, and art is communication. Escher knew he could fool the human eye because he subverted the learned reality of the human mind.

A persistent rumor regarding Shelly Miscavige is that David (who, by all accounts, is quite the hothead) killed her in a fit of rage - and it’s been covered up with the connivance of law enforcement.

Leah’s Twitter thread certainly adds some credibility to that rumor.

They recognize Trump and DeSantis as fascists and they don’t want fascism.

They originally formed as a PAC to oppose Donald Trump’s reëlection and endorsed Joe Biden for President.

In the summer before the election, they said they would also go after prominent Republican Trump supporters.

Unlike most superpacs, they were originally funded by donations of $200 or less. More prominent and wealthy people have now moved in to donate to Lincoln Project.

I’m curious about the inherent contradiction. If they really are Reagan/W Bush Republicans, then that’s the foundation of Trumpism from which it would eventually come again, even if the LP were to entirely take over the GOP.

The AI tools are fun but I am finding a great many tutorials on Youtube wanting.

Like with any other kind of art, the beauty is in the discipline of it.

You’ll find an endless supply of examples using overly elaborate prompts, people just willy-nilly changing this or that word.

Instead of doing that, I’ve been doing the old fashioned thing: pick a subject and do a “study” of it.

Among other things, I’ve been seen how a “cat” can be had in Stable Diffusion.

The thing to do is pick a prompt, and a seed, and stick with it, changing only a single thing in the prompt (for me it has been the associated artistic method of making the original, e.g. “charcoal” or “pencil”).

That is how one can really learn the tool.

Here is a painting of a cat. It looks like it really could have been a painting of a real cat:

I get the sense that they realize that it is highly unlikely that they will ever be able to return to the Republican Party. Or ever be welcomed there by Trump and his minions.

My assumption is that they are trying to develop a ‘Conservative’ pro-democracy alternative to it.

In the end, as long as we want to have a democracy here, we are going to have to find a workable arrangement with folks like them. They do seem to be eager to work with us. At least right now.

If you check out #stablediffusion on twitter you’ll discover that most of the posters are young people trying to make erotic images. Usually by guys wanting females to have enormous breasts.

Most of the rest of the images are people looking to make fantasy scenery as if they are doing it for a video game.

Most of those images look alike because they all keep copying prompts with a few key words they all share.

Only a small minority of tweeters appear to be people wanting to see what the AI can really do.

I keep looking at DeSantis and the same four words keep coming to mind: “Big fish, small pond.” His appeal to MAGAts is the same as Christie’s was or Abbot’s is: The state GQP have such a death grip on politics at all levels of the state that he can do whatever he wants and suffer little blowback. But like Christie in 2016, the moment he starts trying to appeal to voters outside his safe haven of FL, he’s gonna lose that appeal as it will become apparent that words like “compromise” and “bipartisan” exist if you actually want to be president.

Associated Press:

Trump files lawsuit to avoid Jan. 6 committee subpoena (today)

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former President Donald Trump is suing the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol to avoid cooperating with a subpoena requiring him to testify.

The suit filed Friday evening contends that, while former presidents have voluntarily agreed to provide testimony or documents in response to congressional subpoenas in the past, “no president or former president has ever been compelled to do so.”

“Long-held precedent and practice maintain that separation of powers prohibits Congress from compelling a President to testify before it,” Trump attorney David A. Warrington said in a statement announcing Trump’s intentions.

Warrington said Trump had engaged with the committee “in a good faith effort to resolve these concerns consistent with Executive Branch prerogatives and separation of powers,” but said the panel “insists on pursuing a political path, leaving President Trump with no choice but to involve the third branch, the judicial branch, in this dispute between the executive and legislative branches.”

The problem is that people like Rick Wilson, or David Frum, are the people who accelerated the breakdown of this country by further heightening conservative rhetoric. They’re horrified because their plan worked; their language is now being used in good faith. And when you give them a moment to express themselves in a nice, safe conservative environment, they open their mouths and demonstrate that they’re upset because their side has embarrassed them, failed to keep their gratification needs carefully concealed behind ostrich feathers. They don’t regret establishing that liberals are inherently unserious and invalid, that all skepticism of US militarism is treason, that the price of “freedom” is simply ignoring an every growing stack of civilian casualties overseas for no particular strategic end.

They’re necrophages, baffled and infuriated by necrophiles.

They may be -unavoidable- because they’ve permanently fucked US political culture, but nobody is under any obligation to not observe that the poisoners who just wanted to keep a steady rate of sickness that makes the victim compliant. are not reliable allies against the poisoners that want a fresh corpse to hump.

Guys, I have always suspected that Florida did not make a hard right turn. I try to keep my conspiracy theories in check and I never voiced it but that is how I feel.

I think we might be the model the GOP was planning for the rest of the country. They cheated to win here so it makes them very confident in their own twisted way the the other side is cheating as well. Elections are determined by the best cheaters.

A server room overheating isn’t unheard of, but is generally a symptom of blind cost cutting with no regard for what’s actually being cut. A naive directive such as, “The thermostat shall be kept at 71 degrees in all rooms during normal business hours, and 75 degrees after work hours,” could easily end in overheating equipment.

Google keeps their data centers at 80 degrees. Most server rooms are much cooler than they need to be. Chances are the hvac system had some sort of failure, it happens. I doubt anything that was done in the past 2 weeks was the cause, but what I could see happening is they let go of the guy who receives the alerts from the monitoring system so it wasn’t caught until something failed.

Also I am guessing they are being generous with the term “server room” This was probably some IDF closet with a rack, and couple switches if all that got knocked out was wifi.

I’m curious about the inherent contradiction. If they really are Reagan/W Bush Republicans, then that’s the foundation of Trumpism from which it would eventually come again, even if the LP were to entirely take over the GOP.

They want the oligarchy of power (white, male, wealthy) without the monarchy/cult of personality of a Trump or DeSantis where the whim of a single man can remove any of them. And I think at least the veneer of a republic with the appearance of democratic elections are important to them to some degree.

MAGA wants to raise the voter age to 21—but shouldnt the voting age be 16?

Hear me out
19 states allow the death penalty for 16/17 yr olds
50 states allow taxation of the 2.5M 16/17 yr old workers

So if theyre old enough to be taxed & executed—why arent they old enough to vote?

Because they voted for the wrong party, hence proving that it was a mistake to let them vote in the first place.

They forget that true red-blooded, red-hatted MAGAts hate all politicians, they just hate GOP politicians slightly less than Democrats.

They vote for Trump because he has sold himself to them successfully as the anti-politician, which has allowed him to get away with things that would have derailed the campaign (or career) of any professtional politician.

At least this particular cryptoscam seems to have an interesting denouement:

Several wallets allegedly belonging to FTX were drained of hundreds of millions of dollars in coins late on Friday night, with much of the funds transferred from Tether (USDT) into stablecoin DAI, and from staked Ethereum (stETH) into Ethereum (ETH).

It was the same day that FTX filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and it looked too soon, too late at night, and too sophisticated for the actions to be attributed to liquidators.

The exodus, all visible on blockchain tracker Etherscan, totaled around $650 million according to pseudonymous blockchain sleuth ZachXBT, widely trusted by the DeFi community.

It took until after 2 am EST for FTX US general counsel Ryne Miller to call the transfers “unauthorized” and add that FTX had begun moving assets to cold wallets to “mitigate the damage.”

They’re still around, and people are still making more of them, but they’re not the new hotness anymore. The funny thing is, video games have been trying to integrate NFTs (some as part of user-defined content, i.e. inject your own NFT into the game, some as a way of validating in-game purchases that you could potentially re-sell), but gamers adamantly want nothing to do with that.

A lot of games get quickly scrutinized now to see how they are trying to monetize themselves. Micro-transactions, loot boxes, and pay-to-win strategies are detected and quickly pointed out. And some of the strategies are illegal in some countries or regions as being akin to paid gambling.

Game production pressures results in a lot of games being released prematurely and often incomplete in both terms of development and testing. (Steam “early access” is often criticized as allowing the distributors/developers to get others to do their beta testing for them.) And crowdfunding methods like Kickstarter that are supposed to help the small independent developers get a chance was pretty quickly adopted by the large developers as well.

And the criticism of the various monetization, marketing and production strategies comes from both outside and within the industry.

All in all, it boils down to there being a lot of garbage out there in the industry.

For sure. Game companies are just throwing monetization strategies at the wall to see what sticks. Most games seem to have settled on a “seasonal battle pass” model, but even within that genre, there is tremendous variability. Halo Infinite - a game with a strong legacy from one of the most iconic franchises in modern gaming - is frequently and severely criticized for how bad its battle pass system is.

That’s almost how we got our youngest cat. A person who rescues cats got a call from someone that heard kittens calling from behind her house. The rescuer went back there searching and found a litter of kittens. The mother might have been killed on the road or something. Of the 6 in the litter 3 had died already from the cold and/or malnutrition. She picked up the other 3 and took them to her house to nurse them back to life. One didn’t make it as it was too far gone. The other 2 made it and we acquired one, Freddie.

They are also not racists. Think of W who had African-Americans whom he actually knew in important positions in his government.

Not overt racists. Holding some racist attitudes? More than the usual liberal? I’d bet on that…

They lug nothing around. They have people to do that.
Watch the video, only uses the bottom 3 strings.

He occasionally flips around and uses the top strings, but the whole middle section is basically no man’s land. It is all just very gimmicky.

As for lugging it around, probably still easier than an upright bass.

re: #198 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

….

Having clients do beta testing for you is a well-established and common practice. They are the ones who best understand how features should work for them. Let’s not forget the ancient aphorism from prehistoric times: Software is debugged in the field. There is no way for any software company to test every combination of hardware and user environment before releasing a product.

Yes. But client beta testing is done with it clearly specified that it is being done that way.

Early access is charging people for the game in an unfinished form.* Often cheaper than the expected full release price. And it is not that people go into it fully uninformed. However, it does also lead to the pressures for games to be released sooner than they otherwise ought to in my opinion. With there also being the risk that the game is never fully fixed and ends up in abandonware hell.

* - And yes I do own a number of Early Access titles. But I am also very aware of what I am getting myself into in regards to what I play initially might change appreciably by the time of full release. And I’m also pretty wary before I step into that pool in the first place. I generally play a lot trailing edge games (like Arma 3) than I am playing cutting edge games.

Speaking of games and gaming, several months ago, publishing giant Bungie sued some people who were making and selling cheat software (aim hacks) for their blockbuster flagship product, Destiny 2. These cretins had the audacity to counter-sue, claiming that Bungie illegally accessed files on their computers and bypassed security measures. The judge in the case said, “You clowns, you didn’t allege a single fact that actually supports any of these claims. Geddouddaheah.”

Taxation without representation may have led to the Revolution, but where in the Constitution is that illegal? Non-citizens pay taxes. Ex-felons who are denied voting rights pay taxes. It’s an absurd argument.

It’s another one of those great Constitutional Fallacies.

Residents of Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, etc., all pay federal taxes.

Sort of. Residents of Puerto Rico only pay federal taxes on income earned outside of Puerto Rico. They don’t pay taxes to the IRS on Puerto Rico earned income. This includes capital gains taxes from stocks and bonds since the domecile is considered the location, not the location of the exchange.

I thought one of the arguments in puerto rico against becoming a state is that they don’t currently pay federal income tax but would have to if they gained statehood, although I think they pay social security and medicare taxes.

The tankies and Putinverstehers over at moonofalabama are praising this as a military feat worthy of Xenophon’s anabasis.
