Dude, this is what I mean when I say that you can’t assume that reactionaries use words like everyone else use words.

Like, if you tie together everything that’s being said…from first principles what is “free speech” to Elon Musk or his dick riders?

Because I’d say it doesn’t relate at all to the Constitution or any precedents about free speech it amounts to:

- you must pay attention to me
- you must not be critical

…and that’s it, period. Assuming that there’s more is a grace that should not be bestowed.

And I would propose that this is a good exercise to do with any catchphrase a reactionary throws out: don’t assume the commonly-held meaning, look at their other statements and milieu and determine what their definition is.

Case in point…”grooming”

Despite the ongoing legal battles, writer and director Fallaize said he wrote the script for “Control” with Spacey in mind. Fallaize says he “grew up” watching Spacey as a film fan and said while the controversy surrounding Spacey was “a consideration, I wouldn’t say it was a concern.”

Some people just aren’t concerned about abuse.

I know Jeff Bezos gets a lot of criticism, much of it warranted, but he’s not the same as Elon Musk. He’s now donated more than $2 billion to charity, and has pledged to give away most of his wealth.

This is a billionaire who at least seems to be trying to give back to society.

Bezos is in the Carnegie mode of trying to rehab his image. Public donations and charities to rehabilitate his image after designing a company that helped to disrupt brick and mortar businesses and then underpays workers and denies them basic benefits, like access to bathrooms.

We’re at their whims and beck and calls to hope they donate to somewhere useful, instead of taxing them accordingly and having those benefits reduce overall tax burdens for all taxpayers.

I would say there is no such thing as a “good” billionaire because of what you must be to get to that level. That said, there are those - Bezos, Gates, Carnagey - who also understand that and try to be “not as bad” in the end. If Bezos and Gates have even half the impact that Carnagey did with his free public libraries, they’ll make up for much of what they’ve done to get there.

Oh. Oh God.

I started reading the filing. I got to this part:

On January 6, 2021, the 117th Congress held a proceeding and debate in Washington DC (“Proceeding”). Proceeding was for the purpose of counting votes under the 2020 Presidential election for the President and Vice President of the United States under Amendment XII. During this Proceeding over 100 members of U.S. Congress claimed factual evidence that the said election was rigged. The refusal of the Respondents to investigate this congressional claim (the enemy) is an act of treason and This fraud by Respondents. A successfully rigged election has the same end result as an act of war; to place into power whom the victor wants, which in this case is Biden, who, if not stopped immediately, will continue to destroy the fundamental freedoms of Brunson and all U.S. Citizens and courts of law.

THE STUPID, IT BURNS.

re: #25 Crush White Nationalism

To be fair, literally no “free market conservative” has ever not used their power to ensure that the market favored their patrons.

I mean, human and financial aid for poor countries is contingent on them opening themselves up for development…by American/European countries, at an incredibly low price point for the commodity. If you’re installing a dictator, handing out bribes, or setting a debt trap—or just sitting by waiting for the institutions you funded to do this for you while granting plausible deniability—resulting in some official just signing over the nation’s extactable wealth for pennies on the dollar, you don’t care about the free market.

There is no point in time where “free market” people weren’t putting the thumbs on the scale, and there’s never going to be one.

It’s is also social engineering: that it does general good is subordinate to how it permits the powerful to determine both what is a “problem” and how that “problem” is resolved.

Case in point—remember when Bill Gates decided to use his clout to quash an open-source COVID vaccine? The preferred generosity of the powerful is not generous, it’s a more elliptical favorable transaction.

They’re suing every Democrat in the House, the Senate, and the White House because apparently, they think they’re all traitors for not investigating the claims of fraud from the Republicans, and that was an act of war against the American People, and I can’t really comprehend where that’s going but something something the trial court needs to kick them all out of office and do a redo of the 2020 election strictly in person and on election day no excuses.

A student of authoritarianism’s take on the photo of Musk’s nightstand. And what it was intended to message.

*sigh*

Okay…I think this is too deep in the tea leaves.

This is exactly like pundits overplaying their hand interpreting Trump: there is no there there, Musk is shallow and desperately wants to be funny and cool to his audience of reactionaries. What should be repeated over and over is that he’s fucking stupid, a basic-ass poster who had to buy an overpriced social media platform to shove his dogshit memes on everyone.

Yeah, he sucks but what his audience wants is precisely the mystique that he can act and provoke this kind of fear…and just never give these fuckers what they want because that makes them confident they can hurt people more.

It’s the exact opposite of what she’s saying: this is entirely about trying to formulate shit that draws fawning reaction but risks little…much like his toying with racist dogwhistles. The reaction of the people that feel targeted matters only to the extent that it excites and encourages his fanbase…to the point that they will overgeneralize any one strong reaction into “this is what all the libs are doing, they all deserve contempt.”

You shouldn’t re-circulate it because it’s dogshit—like, not funny but also over-effortful (and probably referencing something stupid since Elon has no originality) but also keyed into a community of awful people.

Certainly, from the picture, neither appears functional as a firearm.

And, I agree, there is no indication regarding the level of Ruth Ben Ghiat’s sophistication regarding firearms.

It seems to me that, despite his well paid public relations, Musk seems fairly clumsy and ignorant regarding cultural norms as well as a bunch of other things.

It seems to me that Musk intended to signal… something.. with his nightstand picture. And based upon his recent history, signalling the violent right wing would be my first guess.

Whatever the case, obviously it was not very slick and well thought out. But that seems to be his modus operandi.

About the most plausible argument I think we could make for his post being a Nazi dogwhistle is that he chose that specific post to respond to, for some bizarre reason. That’s a pretty big stretch, IMO, but God only knows how often I’ve been wrong before.

Deniability is the ‘some bizarre reason’. The stretch is because it’s not a fact, it’s a hunch.

That’s not true. He’s replying to a post about the diversity of life on Madagascar, which has been separated from other land masses around 88 million years ago. Not everything is a Nazi dog whistle.

The prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana resulted in the separation of East Gondwana (comprising Madagascar, Antarctica, Australia and the Indian subcontinent) and West Gondwana (Africa-South America) during the Jurassic period, around 185 million years ago. The Indo-Madagascar landmass separated from Antarctica and Australia around 125 million years ago[27] and Madagascar separated from the Indian landmass about 84-92 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous.[28] This long history of separation from other continents has allowed plants and animals on the island to evolve in relative isolation..

In fact, it would make individuals, churches, academic institutions, and organizations who stand with marriage between a man and a woman in danger of persecution and legal attacks because of their convictions,” Graham added, which, again is false.

No idea why the original image didn’t work.

I have one in the front window now. Only my bulbs are clear (though when I was a kid they were either orange or alternating green/red).

It’s been more than 40 years since I last did any holiday decorating. Just don’t feel like it. Anymore the holidays are just another day to sleep past 6AM.

I understand the feeling. I think part of what drives me to still do it is a sense of nostalgia (which seems to grow stronger as I age). Though I also enjoy the bright shiny things everywhere.

There were some bad things that happened before involving my son and relatives when I would send gifts and they were rejected or I heard endless complaints. For me it just got to the point that it just wasn’t worth it.

I put up my tree and decorate my mantle. Occasionally I MIGHT put a few lights up outside.

I have neither the time nor money to be any more festive than that.

Did anyone expect this lying Pulpit Pimp to tell the truth about anything?

Franklin Graham’s ugly lie ahead of Senate vote on same-sex marriage bill

“The deceptively-named Respect for Marriage Act that Senator Schumer is trying to push through is just a smokescreen to give more protections to same-sex marriage—and it doesn’t protect the religious liberties of those who support traditional marriage. In fact, it would make individuals, churches, academic institutions, and organizations who stand with marriage between a man and a woman in danger of persecution and legal attacks because of their convictions,” Graham added, which, again is false.

Tell you what Pulpit Pimp! If you hate LGBTQ people that much why not go to Russia where your beloved pal Putin agrees with your persecuting activities?

alternet.org

The Heritage Foundation has a TV ad out that says the same thing Graham does.

We cut back a lot on our decorating. This is it outside. And a Charlie Brown scene with porcelain figures (of which my grandmother painted all the wrong colors some 50 years ago) and the tree in the kitchen window.

Almost forgot the main tree. A tabletop one that goes on top of the piano in the living room. Pics when I decide to set everything up.

I have to figure out where to put our little Xmas tree this year. Normally I put it in a corner next to the dining room table, but this year we’re going to need to stuff 14 people around that table (assuming the grandkids don’t catch anything interesting at daycare and keep that branch of the family at home.) I’m not sure the tree won’t block where one of the chairs would go.
Other than that, I’ll throw some lights on the shrubbery, decorate the mantle and get out our Christmas mugs. But not until Dec.

Elon is doing this trying to get more Tesla customers. Now that he realizes they don’t want his “exploding cars that can’t drive around the block without charging 10 times”, he’s toying with the idea of making a Tesla phone. 😂😂😂

Yeah, that’ll work. Twitter is an app that does one thing, and that thing has some monetization factors. The moment Elron tries to bolt a phone or banking or something else not truly related to Twitter’s core function is when Twitter will die. That is, unless he seriously shores up the infrastructure, instead of burning it down, as he’s essentially doing. And, why yes, the people who work on the infrastructure are a major factor in the infrastructure.

Yep! It’s all on Hulu. The original is some 366 episodes or so though. 😂

Personally, I thought the first series went on way too long. Lost interest about midway through season four. It got so boring I haven’t bothered with the latest.

The ones I’m looking forward to are season 2 of The Ancient Magus’ Bride and season 3 of That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime. Also, Season 3 af Arifureta should be out next year. Really looking forward to that one.

re: #87 No Malarkey!

Elmo should probably have addressed his mid-life crisis by getting a 25 year old supermodel gf instead of blowing $44 billion on Twitter and making new, “interesting” friends.

TBF he actually had no intention of buying Twitter but the courts wouldn’t let him back out of the deal. So he’s sulking and trying to break it since it wasn’t the toy he really wanted. And he certainly has a record of not being able to hang on to women— because he obviously doesn’t know how to treat them.

re: #101 Dopamine Fish

About the most plausible argument I think we could make for his post being a Nazi dogwhistle is that he chose that specific post to respond to, for some bizarre reason. That’s a pretty big stretch, IMO, but God only knows how often I’ve been wrong before.

The 88 million is a legitimate number. And Musk seems to respond to random posts — but who knows? Maybe seeing the 88 attracted him because it allowed him to make it a dog whistle? or maybe his remark was a totally innocent reaction to the original tweet.

Wiki on Madagascar.

The choice of 88 is pure dog whistle.

88 was mentioned in the original tweet that Musk was responding to. Here are some older articles on that topic:
smithsonianmag.com

About 88 million years ago, Madagascar and India parted ways, leaving the dinosaurs, mammals, and other creatures there to spin off into strange new forms.

livescience.com

The fossil is from northwestern Madagascar and dates back 66 million years, to the end of the Cretaceous period. Madagascar was already an island at the time, having drifted away from Africa by 88 million years ago

Do you mean that time when people objected
to an irrational counterfactual insistence that a tweet, that cannot be reasonably shown to be a neo-Nazi dogwhistle (since it was merely referring to a previous tweet and was made as a part of a regular rather than a completely random communication and in its usual style), nevertheless was one? Or do you mean that DodgerFan1988 should be ashamed since that part cannot be explained away ever?
