Party Time With the Mavericks: Tiny Desk Concert

When The Mavericks brought their long-running tour to the Tiny Desk, we could hear a well-oiled musical machine that has charmed audiences long enough to earn the band a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association.

From the opening strains of “Back In Your Arms Again,” we are treated to one of the best voices in the U.S. — that of Raul Malo. Backed by a smooth shuffle, Malo’s voice is propelled by the subtle horn blasts that suggest a Tex-Mex border feel, driven home by the accordion.

“Mujer” is a track from the band’s 2020 album, its first album of all-Spanish material, which features the band’s personality shifting from Americana shuffles to Mexican wedding boleros.

“Come Unto Me” is a Mavericks chestnut and gives a glimpse into why the band is such a crowd favorite. The song filters that bolero feel of the previous song into a slow burner with a shouted chorus at the end that usually has the crowd on its feet and singing along.

The Mavericks are one of the best live shows out on the road these days and masters at bringing new fans into their fold. This performance gives us all a good idea of how the band weaves that magic.

Very Interesting:

Tonga volcano eruption blasted millions of tons of water into space

The eruption of the Hunga Tonga undersea volcano in the Pacific Ocean early this year was so powerful that it sent a massive plume of water vapor into space, according to new research released Monday. A volcano launching water beyond the atmosphere had never before been observed by scientists. The research underscores the unusually violent nature of the eruption - and highlights the broader risks from undersea volcanoes.

Satellite observations show that the Jan. 15 eruption propelled water vapor 93 miles off the surface of the planet, well past the generally accepted boundary of space at 100 kilometers, or about 62 miles, according to one of the studies being presented in Chicago at the fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union.

Interesting thing that happened today at the telemark binding factory. A young man and his girlfriend walked in the office, winded from climbing our flight of stairs to our door. The man had a pair of unmounted skis that looked like this…

Been a minute since I’ve seen skis with a swallowtail!

I find out that dude bought our bindings, the high end ones (retail price $750) and he wanted them mounted on his new skis. Him and his girlfriend, who quit her job last month and they’re on a big skiing roadtrip, had been driving for a day and a half from New Hampshire. He told me that the skiing conditions back east are just ludicrously horrible (too warm, no natural snow) so they’re chasing powder.

They caught their breath and I gave them a tall glass of our water from our water cooler, which is stocked with water from a spring at 10,000 feet. They said it was the best tasting water they’ve ever had.

“Come back in an hour, go get some lunch,” I said. “You’re skiing on these bastards with our clamp tomorrow.”

Gratitude to Ukraine
Security, Freedom, Democracy, Courage, Pluralism, Perseverance, Generosity
Timothy Snyder
snyder.substack.com

Debts are awkward, especially debts of gratitude. When we owe others too much, we can find it hard to express our appreciation. If we are not reflective, we might minimize our debt, or simply forget it. If we think highly of ourselves, we might ignore a debt to someone we regard as less important. In the worst case, we can resent the people who have helped us, and portray them in a negative light, just to avoid the feeling that we, too, are vulnerable people who sometimes need a helping hand.

Americans (and many others) owe Ukrainians a huge debt of gratitude for their resistance to Russian aggression. For some mixture of reasons, we have difficulty acknowledging this. To do so, we have to find the words. Seven that might help are: security, freedom, democracy, courage, pluralism, perseverance, and generosity.

And so the truth is now on public display for Elon.

All of it, every bit of it, is for perceived public fan-base approval.

All of it.

There is no underlying adherence or even deference to ideology, altruism, climate change, “a better world” or the human condition.

It is all simply for Elon to feel loved. Pathetic. We are in an era of technology and government where we are at the mercy of one man-child after another.

The AI image generators are evolving rapidly, especially Stable Diffusion.

Here’s a quickie from SD2.1:

It’s as good as DALL-E 2 , though SD still takes more prompt magic than DALL-E 2.

Also, different online implementations of SD get me sometimes radically different results, even when nominally using the same prompt and seed for the same version of SD.

IMO there’s still too much variability and lack of control towards the final image.

There was a stretch of time where AI generated faces had some obvious problems, strange ears, significantly weird lack of symmetry in facial features. It sounds like those issues have been addressed to the point that in smaller less detailed thumbnails, they may be indistinguishable from ‘real’ people.

Chapelle doesn’t need mockery, he needs ridicule. Same goes for Elmo. Insults they hear should be cutting and debilitating. There should be no ‘laughing off’ of the moment. It should be a stain they wear publicly for an extended period of time with no escape.

Or maybe just ignore them - has the same effect.

Hard to believe it was 4-5 years ago that ai generated faces aka ‘DeepFakes’ were causing concern on social media.

Earlier this month you may have seen a website named thispersondoesnotexist.com doing the rounds, which uses AI to generate startlingly realistic fake faces. Well, here’s the sequel: whichfaceisreal.com, which lets you test your ability to distinguish AI-generated fakes from the genuine article. Just head to the site and click on who you think is the real person!

whichfaceisreal.com also has a higher purpose though. It was set up by two academics from the University of Washington, Jevin West and Carl Bergstrom, both of whom study how information spreads through society. They think the rise of AI-generated fakes could be trouble, undermining society’s trust in evidence, and want to educate the masses.

“When a new technology like this comes along, the most dangerous period is when the technology is out there but the public isn’t aware of it,” Bergstrom tells The Verge. “That’s when it can be used most effectively.”
*snip*

Can you tell the difference between a real face and an AI-generated fake?

Yes, Poe’s Law, as you pointed out previously.

The face-to-face indicators are already lost.

So context is even more critical. And often, researching that context is considered more costly than the perceived reward. Sometimes, when I post, I try to provide context or an indicator. Of course I have never been accused of being subtle.

Joy Reid had Adam Serwer on her show Monday evening. They discussed a couple of points. And how Musk is twisting Twitter to fit those points

The first point was based on Serwer’s recent Atlantic article.

Basically, that the right wing has a right to post whatever they want. And everybody else has a right to read what the right wing posts. (But not to post anything themselves.)

And second, that basically the rightwing needs the progressives online so that the rightwing can organize and unify around attacking the progressives. Basically, that the rightwing needs victims to bully.

Oklahoma takes ‘momentous’ step to allow taxpayer-funded religious schools (Politico)

A 15-page memo leans on a trio of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that favored religious schools and won rapt attention from conservative school choice advocates and faith groups.

(Looks like it’s time for The Satanic Temple to open a school in Oklahoma.)

Oklahoma’s departing attorney general just took a big step toward achieving a conservative education milestone.

A state law that blocks religious institutions and private sectarian schools from public charter school programs is likely unconstitutional and should not be enforced, Attorney General John O’Connor and Solicitor General Zach West wrote in a non-binding legal opinion this month.

Their 15-page memo leans on a trio of recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions that favored religious schools and won rapt attention from conservative school choice advocates and faith groups.

Oklahoma Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt said the advisory opinion “rightfully defends parents, education freedom, and religious liberty in Oklahoma.” Newly-elected state Superintendent Ryan Walters called it “the right decision for Oklahomans.”

Chicago Police officer Henry Capouch was arrested recently for urinating in the ice machine at Jimmy B’s Bar inside the Beachcomber Hotel in St. Pete Beach, Florida. It is alleged that a hotel employee discovered Capouch “pissing in the ice machine” and told him to stop. Capouch allegedly responded by shoving the employee and cursing at him before leaving the scene but without fleeing far enough. The employee and a security guard quickly led deputies on a low speed manhunt resulting in the the discovery of Capouch on a nearby beach with his girlfriend where he was arrested on charges of battery and disorderly conduct.

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is nearing the completion of its investigation into cryptocurrency exchange Binance, which started in 2018. A report from Reuters suggests there is a conflict among US prosecutors over whether the gathered evidence is enough to press criminal charges against the crypto exchange and its executive or not.

The 2018 investigation revolve around Binance’s compliance with the U.S. anti-money laundering (AML) laws and sanctions. The U.S. prosecutors were investigating charges related to unlicensed money transmission, money laundering conspiracy and criminal sanctions violations.

Eva Kaili has been removed from office by the European Parliament after a majority voted on Tuesday morning to oust her from her position as vice president. The move came soon after the heads of all political groups of the European Parliament agreed to remove her from the body.

The motion to end her term early was backed by 625 MEPs, while one voted against and two abstained.

A two-thirds majority was required for her to cease being one of the body’s 14 vice presidents.

Who is Eva Kaili?

The 44-year-old Greek Social Democrat was arrested in Belgium on Friday over allegations she was part of a group accepting bribes from Qatar in exchange for promoting policies friendly to the Gulf state.

Kaili has already been suspended from her duties and is in police custody. More information about specific criminal charges against her are due to be announced on Wednesday, Belgian officials have said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world,” the comedian Dave Chappelle roared on stage at the Chase Center in San Francisco as he invited the Twitter owner out to join him on Sunday night.

For the first couple of seconds Musk appeared ready to accept a euphoric welcome from the crowd of 18,000. He raised his arms high in the air and spun around as though he’d just scored a World Cup decider.

Then the booing started. And it continued. And it got louder. And louder. For the best part of 10 minutes Musk was given a real-time readout of his current popularity ratings…

A normally irrepressible Musk seemed to be dumbstruck by the booing. He remained speechless, only opening his mouth to cry for help: “Dave, what shall I say?”

“Don’t say nothing,” Chappelle counseled. “You hear that sound, Elon? That’s the sound of pending civil unrest.”

At least there was alternative facts to fall back on. By Monday morning Musk had perked up and was busily rewriting history. The deafening noise, he reassured his Twitter followers, had in fact been “90% cheers & 10% boos”.

Tell that to James Yu, a writer who was in the crowd on Sunday. “A good 80% of the stadium boos,” he estimated, noting that once the jeering started Musk withered on stage and turned “into a corncob”.

re: #137 Dangerman

I remember when the health experts were saying that worst case scenarios would be 250k dead or 500k dead, and Trump took that on as a challenge and beat it handily.

Had we followed health expert guidance, we’d have seen a fraction of the death toll and economic harms. Had we followed the Washington State model, we’d have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Trump and the GOP went all in on the death cult - ignoring health and safety laws to maximize the body count.

This will stay with us for a long time to come, as life expectancy in the US has dropped precipitously and has yet to recover, the deaths keep piling up, especially among GOPers who refuse to vaccinate or mask, and other diseases are making comebacks because vaccination efforts are derailed due to GOP politicizing vaccinations in a way that harms everyone.

The GOP are actively trying to undermine US military readiness by fighting vaccination mandates in the military. They’re fighting vaccination mandates in the courts, and that will make fighting the next pandemic even more difficult because that’s what the GOP does. They don’t give a shit about how many people die, get sick, or quit/lose their jobs because of shitty working conditions where employers don’t care about worker health or safety.

And the worst GOP ideas are the ones that seem to get egged on by the fever swamps, so they get more extreme with each passing iteration.

Your medical system on capitalism.

This is not new. The same thing happened with the manufacturer of iron lungs for people with polio or permanently injured by it.

Originally those devices were sold to individuals with a lifetime warranty of service and repair.

As people naturally died and the number of people using iron lungs dropped, the company which made them created a separate company to conduct the repairs and service, transferred all their money to the parent medical equipment manufacturer, and shortly the service company went bankrupt.

Sorry, folks, your breathing was orphaned.

While November’s figures showed a modest deceleration in inflation, the costs of essential items and housing facing U.S. consumers still remain stubbornly high and well above the Federal Reserve’s long-term price stability target of 2%.

What about IoT stuff?

Let’s say you have a security system. Security company goes bankrupt. Some time after, you go out running errands and the security system fucks up and locks you out of your house.

Now, you have to break in to your own home and there’s no one to go after for the related costs.

I had one; it might still be around in a box in my parents’ house. My first job was working for a man who ran a hardware store, and he had a Radio Shack display in one corner. He gave me the device and told me to figure the thing out. I never did actually get anywhere with it, since I didn’t understand that it used proprietary bar codes, and that the company was already on its way out by the time I received it.

Yup. A security breech of private information doomed the company.

The CueCat connected to computers, in the same way as a keystroke logger, as a pass-through, between the keyboard PS/2 jack and the motherboard PS/2 port (due to USB-PS/2 compatibility, USB-PS/2 adapters may be additionally used). CRQ (“see our cue”), the desktop software, intercepted the data from both the keyboard and the CueCat, before passing it on to the operating system. Versions for both Windows 32-bit or Mac OS 9 were included. Users of this software were required to register with their ZIP code, gender, and email address. This registration process enabled the device to deliver relevant content to a single or multiple users in a household.

Privacy groups warned that it could be used to track readers’ online behavior because each unit has a unique identifier.[35] Belo officials said they would not track individual CueCat users but would gather anonymous information grouped by age, gender and ZIP code.[11]

In September 2000, security watchdog website securitywatch.com notified[36] Digital Convergence of a security vulnerability on the Digital Convergence website that exposed private information about CueCat users.[37] Digital Convergence immediately shut down that part of their website, and their investigation concluded that approximately 140,000 CueCat users who had registered their CueCat were exposed to a breach that revealed their name, email address, age range, gender and zip code. This was not a breach of the main user database itself, but a flat text file used only for reporting purposes that was generated by ColdFusion code that was saved on a publicly available portion of the Digital Convergence web server.

This failure was given a multi-citation Octopus TV “Failure Award” regarding brands that failed to take off and were hacked.[38]

This is in the latest dispatch from Talking Points Memo from GA rep Rick Allen:

“Mark, please know that I have prayed for President Trump, his family, for you and the entire Administration. Our Nation is at war, it is a Spiritual War at the highest level. This is not a war that can be fought conventionally, this is God’s battle and He has used President Trump in a powerful way to expose the deceit, lies and hypocrisy of the enemy. The Trump family and all of us have paid a heavy price to be used by the Father but the War is just beginning. We have had a major set back and people are taking sides, and my plea to my fellow believers who want to cut and run is judge not less you be judged, we have all fallen short of the Glory of Almighty God. What I heard during my prayers is the Trump family and the Administration need to be surrounded by those great Pastors and Evangelicals who have snd continue to love and support them. President Trump need to be ministered to, he needs the love that only Jesus Christ offers! This is his opportunity to confess that he can no longer fight this battle alone, he must give it to Christ and Gid almighty will show him the way to victory. I will continue to pray for all of you, please let me know how I can help??”

Headline: Satan not powerful enough; needs China to wreak any actual havoc

That came from this video interview of Kanye West on YouTube (December 11, 2022, 4:54).

The interview is unhinged enough, but the comments aren’t even attached to the door frame.

Sunday, December 11, 2022 - Ye (Kanye West) told X17 exclusively today — during a full face masked interview — that he is NOT bipolar and having an episode, but that he might be autistic. He goes on to explain that China is the real threat to the U.S. and that Satan is using the Chinese government to attack us. The designer extraordinaire met with some of his staff at the Cornerstone Christian Church, where he visited two weeks ago, to discuss the Donda Academy being housed at this facility, we’re told. You can see a few students leaving the building.

Similar story. Go to buy a car at nearby dealer. Did online start and agreed upon price. Go and look at paperwork in dealership and they tack on all kinds of BS charges, like for etching and a few other things. I refused to pay for them - said that those weren’t agreed on and aren’t necessary.

They refused to budge.

I left showroom without sale. I went to dealer my inlaws used in NY (I’m in NJ). I refuse to do any business with the dealer 5 minutes from house and go to a dealership 20 minutes away for all my servicing. That’s 15 years worth of servicing and excellent experience at this other dealership.

Kicker: the neighborhood dealer was hit by consumer affairs for major fine relating to those BS fees.

Bought my son a set of $70 earbuds, and paid the $13 for the two year warrantee at Best Buy. A little over a year later, he lost one of the buds. Walked in, and not only did they trade for a new set (losing one earbud was part of the coverage) but they gave me a refund for the difference in price between when I had bought them originally and the new set.

HBO Max wants to make sure that people ask themselves why they still have HBO Max subscriptions.

HBO Max is cleaning house again. After the Warner Bros. Discovery streamer removed over 60 titles from the platform without warning this August — many of which were originals developed for the service — a new batch of series are being prepped to be taken off in the next few days, sources have confirmed to IndieWire.

The most high-profile of these series is HBO’s “Westworld,” which was canceled this fall after falling ratings in Season 4. Other shows getting taken off include Victorian England sci-fi show “The Nevers” and rom-com anthology series “Love Life.” In a similar vein to the Lionsgate series “Minx,” the pulling of these shows effectively doubles as their cancellation announcement. According to sources, other less-high profile titles will be announced to leave the service in the next few days.

We negotiated buying our Smart over the telephone before ever arriving at the dealership, including accessories and price.

We didn’t have any problems with add-on mystic charges from the Mercedes-Benz dealership. The only problem we had was they were flummoxed about how to accept money orders drawn from our two banks since they weren’t set up for such a system.

They’ve canceled the best remaining show on Cartoon Network, Craig of the Creek, even shortening the final season a few episodes.

My son was telling me that one of the VPs of the channel has come out and said that the goal is to get the channel back to the edgier type programming like Adventure Time and Samurai Jack, but we’ll see. I hope he has that kind of influence, but I think Craig actually fit the kind of stories he claims they are looking for and yet it got canceled anyway.

They can’t protect you from inhaling the virus. As I have said, they’re not little sharks with lasers floating around your head. They have trained your body to respond to the virus as quickly as it can, but it’s still up to the human body to react to it. But they have significantly lowered the risk of significant and sever illness for those who are vaccinated.

Yes — not as severe illness, mostly mild, but still illness for several days and the ability to transmit it to others.

286
Dr Lizardo  Dec 13, 2022 • 9:55:27am

I’m guessing the Biden Administration reckons that Iran has indeed started preparing their missiles for shipment to Russia.

The Biden administration is finalizing plans to send the Patriot missile defense system to Ukraine that could be announced as soon as this week, according to two US officials and a senior administration official.

The Pentagon’s plan still needs to be approved by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin before it is sent to President Joe Biden for his signature. The three officials told CNN that approval is expected.

Ukraine has been calling for the US to send the advanced long-range air defense system that is highly effective at intercepting ballistic and cruise missiles as it comes under a barrage of Russian missile and drone attacks that have destroyed key infrastructure across the country. It would be the most effective long-range defensive weapons system sent to the country and officials say it will help secure airspace for NATO nations in eastern Europe.

The only one that came close was the original Magnum P.I. and that, while good, was still more of a fantasy in many ways of what a PI’s life was like. Rockford, living in his trailer and scrabbling for jobs and held back by his convict status, just felt believable in a different way.

In Malibu, Paradise Cove, right? ; )

I originally said Binance here. A cryptocurrency mining organization called Argo Blockchain is in hot shit because they accidentally leaked draft bankruptcy documents online, and while they hurried to assure everybody that they weren’t bankrupt YET, London and New York both suspended trading of Argo stock.

We attach value to paper. The value their money offered was that it wouldn’t require oversight by a government. The longer it’s gone on, though, the more everyone realizes that currencies require oversight.

That and there’s a difference between real currency issued by a government and vapourware issued by a Libertarian outfit.

The first is backed by that government, accepted in other nations as the “coin of that realm,” and is physical in that you can immediately exchange it for goods or services anywhere in that nation.

The second is backed by “trust me, bro,” accepted by no one, cannot be exchanged for any goods or services in that nation without first converting it to real currency.

The great lie of cryptocurrency is that it does not rely on governments and their so-called fiat currency.

All currency is fiat currency: It has value because people say it does.

At least gold and silver are not entirely fiat, in that they are used in industry and jewellery.

To a boy in Wisconsin, it was all like living in paradise. OTOH, couldn’t be too fancy if they’d let him have that trailer there ;)

FYI: the SEC complaint document doesn’t seem to have loaded.

And seeing how Sam Bankman-Fried has got not only the SEC, but the DoJ on his ass for various frauds, I hope he’s got a comfy pad to wait out his extradition: he seems to be angling to set a new record for “descent from billionaire to indigent defendant” - what? six weeks??

And yeah, look like Planet Crypton is getting ready to implode: not a surprise when one considers that - for all the digital woo-woo and high-tech hype, crypto is basically vapor-ware “money”- and its markets have really nothing much behind them other than the willingness of financial players to assign *real-money* value to the shit: to the tune of, what? $2 trillion or so all told?

At least tulips had real value.

If anyone trusts their money with anyone with “blockchain” in their name, that’s on them. I like to see the word “bank” or words “credit union” or “FDIC insured.”
