By the way, on this date last year the final escaped zebras were recaptured in suburban Maryland.
After four months on the run in the Maryland suburbs, two zebras that escaped from an exotic animal farm have been caught.
Spokesmen for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service and the Prince George’s County Department of the Environment confirmed that the zebras have been captured, but they could not provide details on when the recovery took place.
*snip*
The pair were part of a trio that got away in late August from a large farm owned by Jerry Holly in Upper Marlboro off Duley Station Road, authorities said. One of the zebras died soon after their escape when it got caught in an illegal snare trap on a neighboring property. Officials have said at least 30 zebras live in a herd on Holly’s farm.

He does know what Hitler thought about “the negroes”, doesn’t he?
When black Americans emerged as the stars of the Berlin Olympics’ first days of track competition, Joseph Goebbels wrote in his diary that “white humanity should be ashamed of itself.” He meant not only for losing, but for even allowing black people to compete. When Baldur von Schirach, leader of the Hitler Youth, suggested to Adolf Hitler that posing for a photo with the champion Owens would be good publicity, Hitler was repulsed by the idea. “The Americans ought to be ashamed of themselves for letting their medals be won by Negroes,” he replied in anger. “I myself would never shake hands with one of them.”

As you point out, the Russians are avoiding military targets and going after unarmed civilians.
“Two Jewish guys from Odesa meet up,” Zelensky said. “One asks the other: ‘So what’s the situation? What are people saying?’”
In a respite from leading his country’s resistance against the ongoing Russian invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky briefly returned to his previous career of telling jokes for an episode of David Letterman’s new show that aired Monday.
In his appearance on “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction,” the Jewish Ukrainian leader told a joke about the state of Russia’s military, to laughs from the audience and host.
“Two Jewish guys from Odesa meet up,” Zelensky said. “One asks the other: ‘So what’s the situation? What are people saying?’”
“And he goes, ‘What are people saying? They are saying it’s a war.’”
“What kind of war?”
“Russia is fighting NATO.”
“Are you serious?”
“Yes, yes! Russia is fighting NATO.”
“So how’s it going?”
“Well, 70,000 Russian soldiers are dead. The missile stockpile has almost been depleted. A lot of equipment is damaged, blown up.”
“And what about NATO?”
“What about NATO? NATO hasn’t even arrived yet.”

This June, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had to acknowledge that support for the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was “off the charts, overwhelming,” and 15 Republican senators bucked the NRA to vote for basic gun safety legislation.
But, also in June, the Supreme Court handed down the sweeping New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen decision requiring those trying to place restrictions on gun ownership to prove similar restrictions were in place when the Framers wrote the Constitution. Already, a Texas judge has struck down a rule preventing domestic abusers from possessing firearms on the grounds that domestic violence was permissible in the 1700s.

Looks like losing more than half your share value has finally gotten TSLA shareholders’ attention, although the idea of the LOLking of Mars getting locked back in his Tesla CEO office is going to help matters there. Like the GOP and Russian powers-that-be, it’s amazing how much damage a narcissistic dumpster fire of a leader can do to an organization before the stakeholders pull their thumbs out of their asses and start doing something about it.

When I was still early in my sports writing career, I happened to catch up to him on the 3rd hole of the local golf course and he said we should finish out the front 9 together. On the next hole, he hit a terrible shot and I was waiting for the club throw or the big blow-up. To my surprise he just smiled and said, “Well, I guess I’m getting my money’s worth.”
Thanks for all the memories, Fred. You truly were one of a kind.

Semi-autonomous weapons already exist and are already being used in warfare. Brimstone 2, for example can be fired into an area and then it starts “looking” for suitable targets like tanks and such, using an AI and a database of what the targets look like in radar, visible light and infra-red. If an orphanage happens to be a decent match for a tank for some reason then the Brimstone 2 will hit the orphanage, just like a confused distracted human will select and destroy a civilian target on occasion.

I was at Woodstock 94. In the mud. In the storms. I was there with a long time friend (and we’re still friends - 30+ years). We were both into music, and he was really into hard rock/metal but my tastes ran from prog rock and got into industrial metal and he had never really heard NIN except for the head like a hole single that got wide airplay and a few songs on soundtracks like the Crow.
So when NIN came out in the rain and totally blew everyone away with that set, it was a revelation to him and to the crowd. The headliners that night were Metallica and Aerosmith closed out the night, and both paled in comparison with what NIN did that night. That’s when you knew that NIN would be around to stay. I’d argue that no other act that weekend got a bigger boost than NIN did from that epic show.

That’s up there with the stupidest reasoning I’ve ever seen from a right wing nut job judge.
I’d like to see that Texas judge face something else that was pretty common at the time of the US founding — getting tarred and feathered and ridden out of town on a rail for being an egregious asshole.
How about this for reasoning: At the time of the nation’s founding, Texas was part of New Spain: Therefore we abolish Texas and offer it to Mexico. (Mexico probably doesn’t want all the Republicans though.)

Ogallala, Nebraska, Starts To Dig Out From Under Heavy, Wind-Driven Snow
The blizzard warning here was extended to 11PM last night. Now we are under a winter weather advisory due to continued light snow fall and extremely high winds. We’re starting to dig out here as well.
Blizzard impact continues across Panhandle (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, nine hours ago, with video)
Much of western Nebraska remained closed Wednesday as blizzard conditions continued to bring cold temperatures, snow, and strong winds across the area.
Schools in the Twin Cities area remained closed on Wednesday due to unsafe road conditions, as did government offices. Snow emergencies were declared in Alliance, Chadron, Gering, Kimball, Mitchell, Scottsbluff, Sidney, and Terrytown.
Blizzard impact continues across PanhandleAll major roads throughout the Panhandle remained closed to all but emergency vehicles Wednesday. I-80 remained closed as far east as North Platte due to partial or total covering in snow and ice along with reduced visibility according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation.
Roads leading into Colorado from Nebraska remained closed as well, including US 30, NE 88, NE 92, and US 26 [sic: all four of these roads lead to Wyoming, not Colorado].
As fresh snowfall lessened, reports of total precipitation began to reach the National Weather Service from across the Panhandle. Upwards of 20 inches of snow was reported in and around Chadron with drifts as large as five feet accumulating in some areas.
I appreciate that my relatively new (2019-2020) water heater has a built-in igniter for the pilot light, rather than the old way of having to stick a match in there. Mrs. Fish’s new matches leave something to be desired when it comes to striking on the box. That said, I’d rather not have to re-light my pilot light at all.
re: #130 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
As of Wednesday afternoon, road closures throughout the area remained indefinite due to winter conditions, while dates and times for reopening remained unknown. Eastbound truck traffic coming to North Platte was directed to return east on I-80 as truck parking was unavailable west of Grand Island.
As Nebraska Department of Transportation crews worked to clear roads across the area, the Nebraska State Patrol encouraged patience as the process would take some time. Continually blowing snow is also expected to slow efforts to make roads drivable once more.

Doing some rough maths here and looks like Elon sold around 22.5 Million Tesla shares the past 3 days. Prior estimates of his holdings before this latest series of lies to his investors were around 10%-14% of outstanding TSLA shares.
It could be the case that Elon now owns <10% of the company which greatly increases the chances of pissed off TSLA -holding firms and individuals to call for his removal as CEO. It is clear by now that Elon’s priority now is not to Tesla, but to baby his own personal ego in a rapidly failing effort to own the Libs.
The Biden administration is again making some free COVID-19 tests available to all U.S. households as it unveils its contingency plans for potential coronavirus surges this winter.
Households can now order a total of four rapid Covid tests for free at covidtests.gov.
Orders will start shipping next week, just days before families gather for the Christmas holiday.
The Biden administration shut down the free at-home Covid test program in September because Congress did not pass additional funding.
The White House said it decided to shift existing money to buy more tests and relaunch the popular program as Covid cases started increasing again.

My brother was in a car accident in 2017, and damaged his C4/C5 vertebrae. He got them fused together just about five years ago and everything was fine until August 2018, when he got food poisoning from a Chik-Fil-A in Colorado and spent a day vomiting. The vomiting aggravated something about that surgery, his throat swelled up, he couldn’t swallow, and there was a three week period where I was shuttling him between various hospitals here in the Phoenix area trying to get someone, ANYONE to take a look at him. (I remember one trip to Banner Desert at 02:00 in the morning, and why yes, it was an emergency.) Ultimately, a spine surgeon from Arkansas (! but he was the expert!) flew out after Labor Day and revised the surgery, removing the cage around the fusion. After getting out of the hospital, my brother did eight weeks of in-home vancomycin infusions (3x day).
While this “fixed” his neck and he can now swallow, he still has so much pain from what happened (car accident and two major surgeries) that he’s now in a pain practice trying to manage it. What I got out of that is spine surgery is a crapshoot.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising people to perform repeat testing, also called serial testing, following a negative result on any at-home COVID-19 antigen test, to reduce the risk an infection may be missed (false negative result) and to help prevent people from unknowingly spreading the SARS-CoV-2 virus to others. The FDA recommends repeat testing following a negative result whether or not you have COVID-19 symptoms.

when closed, they keep the butterflies out. so no caterpillars

then we open them up and it’s laying season
in short order there’s lots of caterpillars who lay waste to the leaves and get fat in short order
then we close the hoops. the plants start to regenerate and the caterpillars can climb, hang and transform in relative safety

because the R’s effed up the election, now that means caving to anything the loony 6 or 7 want in exchange for their support.
and he won’t then ‘automatically’ have the job for the entire session.
one of those things he will probably cave on is changing the motion to vacate rule to allowing a single member to bring the motion. if so, he’ll be under the guillotine every single day and so will continue to cave, every single day.

The image is associated with an NFT, which is limited. The funny thing is, the image itself can be passed around as much as you want, physically speaking; the NFT is basically just a digital receipt that says, “I own the original of this.” It purports to give the owner copyright ownership, but that has never been tested.

To briefly explain NFTs: An NFT is an entry on a blockchain somewhere that says, “Person X bought item Y,” and then “item Y” is a unique link to an image stored on a server somewhere. Because the link is unique, the person is then purported to own “that” specific copy of the NFT, which is theirs to share however they like. This can, however, result in hilarious unintended consequences if - as in the recent case of FTX - something happens to the server or domain hosting those images. When FTX went under, they put up a blanket “we’re going through some things” page… that affected all links to all FTX pages everywhere. This included the NFT links, resulting in everybody losing access to their stored NFTs.

Members of the European Parliament voted on Thursday to suspend access to the hemicycle’s premises to Qatari representatives as the Gulf country is suspected of having offered “large sums of money” and “substantial gifts” to MEPs and assistants in a bid to influence European decision-making.
Lawmakers also decided to halt all pending legislation involving Qatar.

Republicans attempting to overthrow governments have a long ignominious history in our nation.
It’s complicated when it comes to Wild Bill Langer but he was Non-Partisan League (NPL) when h was governor. NPL came out of nowhere to take over ND government within a couple of years of forming. Wild Bill was elected governor in 1930 as NPL after mending a rift with him and the party in 1920 or so. One of the first things he did was require state employees donate to the NPL - not illegal by ND laws but violated federal law since highway employees were financed by fed relief money. He was convicted of federal felony fraud in 1932 and state Supreme Court ousted him. He declared martial law and barricaded himself n the governors mansion. He eventually relented and let the Lt Gov take over. His conviction was overturned on appeal in 1935 and he was re-elected government r (NPL) in 1936
NPL later merged with Democratic Party in ND
Wild Bill elected to US Senate in 1940 as a Republican and was staunch isolationist (not to entering WWII) and served until he died in 1959 (didn’t even set foot in the state to win the 1958 election).
NPL did good things - state-owned bank and state-owned mill and elevator - but because of Wild Bill, infighting, and corruption really messed up politics in ND.

Love the comment from one poster there —
Wait. What? My guess was that Trump’s “major announcement” due today was going to be his 2024 VP pick, or perhaps the uncovering of a smoking gun from the 2020 election.
So either this is the Babylon Bee or I’m done with Trump. Thank you for your service, but I’m moving on.

This is the part of NFT’s that makes absolutely no fucking sense to me. It’s a LINK. To a PICTURE. A picture that is linked to ALL OVER THE FUCKING INTERNET, because people download that shit and upload it to other sites, or link to it on sites that then add it to their own CDN’s so they can show it embedded in tweets or toots or whatever they call those things, and how are you supposed to “own” all that?

The “CRT” I had in high school was Critical RACIST Theory.
Andrew Johnson upheld the Constitution from Radical Republicans who used blacks as their political pawns.

re: #346 Crush White Nationalism
I think they were genuinely expecting either a VP pick announcement or he was gonna do a presser stating he had “incontrovertible proof” that he actually won the 2020 election.
This announcement should prove to everyone that the purpose of Trump’s original candidacy was a fundraising gimmick. Getting elected wasn’t supposed to happen. And the only thing he knew how to do once he got in office was to use it to fundraise.

He’s been perfectly content to hide behind toadies and not claim any direct hard evidence of election fraud, probably because his lawyers have advised that to do so would leave him culpable for the same kinds of penalties as the likes of Lindell, et al., are currently seeing.

New VA Life Insurance Coming Soon (Goes to the VA)
VA Life Insurance policies have been serving our nation’s Veterans, service members, and their families for over 100 years. Starting January 1, 2023, enrollment opens for Veterans Affairs Life Insurance (VALife)—a new program offering increased access for Veterans age 80 or under with any level of service-connected disability (0-100%).
Life insurance is a key component for future financial planning. With the right policy and coverage amount, life insurance can cover end-of-life costs, provide an inheritance to family, serve as income to a spouse, or cover some outstanding debts.
Those currently enrolled in VA’s current policy for service-connected Veterans, Service-Disabled Veterans Life Insurance (S-DVI), may keep their coverage or switch to VALife. Although S-DVI will be closed to new enrollments after December 31, 2022.

Exciting! What a great gift idea for your racist uncle!
You might think the Trump NFTs are a scam. But if you buy 45 pics of an NFT like Shotgun Trump or Wall Street Trump — so, roughly $4500 worth — you get a ticket for a “Gala Dinner with Trump” pic.twitter.com/cDqlekG87Y
— Will Sommer (@willsommer) December 15, 2022
1. Chances are real good that Trump didn’t make these NFTs, but rather somebody paid him for the right to use his image. That’s how most of his “Trump” merch happens—put money in his hand and he will do the endorsement.
2. It’s pretty telling that, NFTs otherwise being dead in the water, the market of last resort is MAGA. The overlapping traits between the two rube groups is unflattering, but if there’s anybody that won’t learn a lesson just to be spiteful….
3. I’d wait several days before drawing conclusions on what any of this means, but my money is that this is just easy cash…which, again, it is entirely the Trump “cash the 12 cent check” MO.

There are still those who feel he’s playing 11th level chess, or that this is trolling the libs, who don’t appreciate his brilliance. Those who attempt to leave his orbit (as many did immediately after the insurrection) were pulled back in, compelled by his personal charisma — I don’t understand it, but he has some unnatural trait that either repels or attracts the listener. Maybe he’s like a black hole for some people, once they are in his orbit, they cannot escape.
