An engineer came up with a plan to drop tungsten telephone poles from space - the idea has been seriously considered on multiple occasions, so we tested it. This video is sponsored by Brilliant. Re Tesla decline in value. Both Ford and GM have lost over 40% of their value this year; Tesla may have lost over 65% but then it was valued at a far higher historical P/E ratio. So much of the decline may not be due just to Musk’s erratic behavior but to problems with the auto market itself and the pandemic supply chain issues that affect supplies.

It’s both, and if Tesla can shake off Elon, they might bounce back, making them a great investment today. but I don’t think we can count on them being able to move forward.

I am very happy for Rosie!

Rosie O’Donnell’s family is expanding!

The comedian’s youngest son, Blake O’Donnell, popped the question to his longtime girlfriend, Teresa Garofalow Westervelt, Sunday night in New York City while attending Broadway’s “Phantom of the Opera” musical.

“Last night - my son blake asked his gf teresa to marry him - and she said yes!!!” Rosie, 60, excitedly told her Instagram followers Monday, sharing a pic from the moment the smiling 23-year-old got down on one knee.

Also: as mentioned in my note above, even at its current “depressed” valuation, Tesla has significantly higher P/E ratio; it is about 43, while both Ford and GM have ratios below 7. So if investors actually look at the metrics of the company, ignoring the antics of the CEO, it would appear that it could have a much farther drop without it signaling anything about bad management. Indeed, one could argue that it remains very overpriced; how much of the earnings are based on their selling carbon credits and not cars? I know that you would expect P/E ratio to be much higher than traditional manufacturers, but over 6 times as high?

It’s clear Musk has no clue how any coding is done anywhere, ever.

No technology stack is clean. None. Even when starting from scratch, you’ll be inheriting code or APIs that have ugliness to them. Trying to rewrite the code from ground up on a live product without totally wrecking things is incredibly difficult. What’s the point of rewriting the code? To say you did it?

There’s a lot in Twitter coding that could be bloat, but not without doing a deep examination on the APIs, calls, and services that are used and configured, and how load balancing occurs, etc., and methods to improve the code base would show efficiency gains.

Redoing the code doesn’t guarantee a better experience.

It just means a new code base that may have as many bugs and issues as the old system.

There are some on that list that seem somewhat of a stretch.

“American” for example is problematic, since there are many countries in the Americas. It’s root referred to the original Thirteen Colonies, when the USA was the only independent nation in the Western Hemisphere. In Portuguese for example, an American is called “estadunidense” (citizen of the United States).

rightly or wrongly, because of his toying with twitter at this moment, a lot of the loss in value will be blamed on him regardless

It’s important to note that clean code does not necessarily perform better than so-called “bloated” code. In general, it may reduce resource usage on servers and allow for some minor cost savings, but unless a programmer has done something dreadfully wrong, the resources required to execute an operation are pretty fixed. In fact, refactoring just for the sake of refactoring is generally frowned upon in the industry, viewed as a mark of someone who is overzealous in enforcing their preferred standards. Any refactoring effort should indicate what needs to be refactored, and what value will come out of it (e.g., if I refactor method X, it will allow us to eliminate an extra call to service Y every time Twitter performs operation Z, reducing network overhead by 1.5%.)

re: #385 Nyet

I love how the list simply provides made up stuff as a justification.

“hip-hip hurray, hip hip hooray This term was used by German citizens during the Holocaust as a rallying cry when they would hunt down Jewish citizens living in segregated neighborhoods.”

—-

The call was recorded in England in the beginning of the 19th century in connection with making a toast. Eighteenth century dictionaries list “Hip” as an attention-getting interjection, and in an example from 1790 it is repeated. “Hip-hip” was added as a preparatory call before making a toast or cheer in the early 19th century, probably after 1806. By 1813, it had reached its modern form, hip-hip-hurrah.

It has been suggested that the word “hip” stems from a medieval Latin acronym, “Hierosolyma Est Perdita”, meaning “Jerusalem is lost”, a term that gained notoriety in the German Hep hep riots of August to October 1819. Cornell’s Michael Fontaine disputes this etymology, tracing it to a single letter in an English newspaper published August 28, 1819, some weeks after the riots. He concludes that the “acrostic interpretation … has no basis in fact.”

There are no words to express how bizarre it is to see Republicans attacking the FBI as a bunch of woke liberals. The FBI headed by a TRUMP APPOINTEE. They don’t even *try* to make sense any more.

Propaganda doesn’t have to make sense: It works best if it short-circuits reasoning. The only thing using a word incorrectly such as “woke” is to assign a negative connotation to it; the recipient then associates the negative association with the person or object being described.

This is similar usage to “groomer” to describe drag queens (or more recently to Democrats in general), since most people consider grooming people to be objectively bad (except when done by religions to inculcate children). The revulsion most people feel toward paedophiles is transferred to the person or object to spin up hate (or violence).

As such, that propaganda does make sense.

On Critical Race Theory, Christopher Rufo has acknowledged he specifically selected the term to attack school boards and libraries to subvert education. Since Critical Race Theory also is a niche subject used by other countries (particularly the Soviet Union) to call out the appalling human rights record of the United States concerning treatment of minority groups.

Of course, when you’re explaining you’re losing, so five paragraphs of saying what’s wrong with their framing cannot overcome redefining such word as “woke.”

About the only way I can see to dismiss such disingenuous propaganda is with PRATT (point refuted a thousand times, then move on). Dismiss the person a liar and make them defend their propaganda.

You know if President Joseph Biden isn’t offended, I know he can speak for himself. I’m pretty damn sure he doesn’t need us to be offended on his behalf.

TBH, I think Zelenskyy should have dressed up a bit better for his WH visit: though yeah, Joe doesn’t look at all offended, and given everything else Pres. Z has had (and still has) to deal with, carping about his wardrobe seems fairly petty.

But then again, consider the source.

That’s a business suit, if your business is war.

This isn’t the first time Zelenskyy has been criticized for not dressing up for an address. The fact is, his people are being rounded up and shipped off, raped, murdered, and exploited. I wouldn’t be out there flashing a fancy suit either. He’s showing solidarity with the ordinary Ukrainians back home. I don’t think anybody has a problem with his wardrobe choices except some stuck-up stuffy Republican blowhards who don’t like him anyway, and still wouldn’t like him if he did wear a suit.

As far as I know Zelenskyy never set armed troops on striking miners, planned the landing in Gallipoli, planned an attack on the USSR in 1940 or screwed up the Norway campaign.

Zelenskyy is no Churchill.
