That explains why all the other airlines flopped as well: Oh wait, they didn’t.

Do they have to actually work at being this bad at economics? Wholly crap, I’m just a high school educated socialist and I can explain capitalism better than 95% of these morans.

Socialism is anything they don’t like. That’s why even social issues like LGBTQ stuff equals socialism. Conversely, nothing is actually the “free market” since the “free market” can never fail, only be failed. If Southwest took billions in bailout money and instead of using it to improve the company, they spent it doing stock buybacks so they could all make more money, and then it subsequently falls apart in a spectacular way due to antiquated information systems, then that can’t be a failure of the free market, it’s the fault of the government for not stopping the company from failing.

It’s ingenious in its simplicity, actually.

Operation Cold Brew was a success. Just under two cups water with one 1Zepress container full of French Press grind. Overnight. A little more water to wash out the grinds from the mason jar. I adjusted the grinder 3 notches finer than yesterday’s grind. It’s damn near perfect. I can taste the bean and the whole roast with a sharp kick on the end from the dark roast.

george santos is indeed worthy of a second chance

he does NOT get to keep the seat AND get any deference

FIRST he has to resign the seat
and admit what he did -
that while he didnt earn it illegally he certainly did fraudulently.

then he’s worthy of all the second chances we’ve got

he can even run again if he wants (that would be a second chance too)

Back in the 1970’s a friend, who was an observant Catholic, was sitting on a Pittsburgh bus commuting home. A “Jesus Freak” came in, sat next to him and launched into the standard spiel “Do you know Jesus?”.

My friend immediately interrupted “Jesus? Isn’t he one of those… ah… Christians?”

The “Jesus Freak” then asked “What religion are you?”

The friend replied “I’m a Druid. We burn them… Christians.”

At that point the “Jesus Freak” got up and switched seats. Apparently unsure about the truth of the reply. (On Pittsburgh buses back in the 1970’s probably most everything was possible.) But fairly certain that he was not going to get anywhere in this conversation.

If Santos had. ‘D’ at the end of his name, there would be a coordinated efforts to take him down lead by the GQP, Fox News, and every maga “influencer”. It would be relentless.

And Democrats would have already caved in and forced him to resign. Santos will be sworn in and serve unless he’s found guilty of some crime or the other. Republicans don’t care about his lies. Just read that his constituents are split about him.

People are just fucked up sometimes.

The Las Vegas shooter was a bona fide Ammosexual RWNJ. He had no social media presence and was private and measured in his ramblings so it took some sleuthing. It’s plausible Trump lackeys in the FBI at the time may have shushed any further inquiry.

he does NOT get to keep the seat AND get any deference

FIRST he has to resign the seat

then he’s worthy of all the second chances we’ve got

he can even run again if he wants (that would be a second chance too)

He wasn’t. He was a successful businessman and a big gambler (possibly a winning player, though unlikely). He was known to some in the professional gambling community. I didn’t know him personally but know people who knew him.
If there was a cover-up in the investigation (quite possible), it wasn’t due to Trump; it was due to the casino industry, which wields a massive amount of power in Vegas and NV.

Speculation:
Some folks in the gambling community have speculated that his motivation was to see if he could pull off the biggest mass shooting in history. He approached it as a puzzle to be solved; like beating casino games. He didn’t start accumulating guns until he started planning the shooting.

He targeted a country music concert. Not exactly a juicy target for a right winger.

IMHO he simply went insane in his later years. I don’t think that he was always a psycho, and I don’t think that he was a right winger.

He could have caused 10x the damage. He offed himself shortly after he started shooting. Police didn’t enter the room for close to an hour. He had enough guns and ammo to keep shooting for that whole hour.

Not sure why he killed himself. Maybe he panicked when he heard the cops or maybe it dawned on him what he was actually doing.

I was out working in my detached garage when two women showed up to proselytize for their church.

Told them I had promised my dad to not discuss theology. One woman asked “what is theology “.

Fortunately the other woman realized that maybe the conversation would be counter productive and pulled her friend away.

When you’ve grown up discussing theology with people of all faiths (drunk Jesuits being the most fun), refusing to discuss theology with amateurs is a kindness. But no fun ;-)

People don’t ‘simply go insane’ and commit mass murder which requires planning and forethought on that scale. And it’s not like there’s 0 evidence of his politics or motivations. I had a huge pin oak in my front yard. Huge. It would drop hundreds of pounds of acorns in a good year. So many sometimes, you could skate on them. My old bigger dog Lady before my pool and fence, would do laps around the house. She came tearing from the back one day and wound up on her face, with her back legs churning, and kicking up a rooster tail of acorns for ten feet or so.
I cried tears of laughter. It was a moment I could never capture, only remember.
All the squirrels and Blue Jays all knew my oak.
Jays are notorious for noise and attacking other birds.
I sat a few early fall days watching the limbs bend and leaves move and not a sound.
Hopping back and forth, grabbing acorns and throwing them back like shots. Gorging themselves.
20-30 Jays at a time.
And the strangest thing was, they did not make a sound. Not a peep. Just bounced from limb to limb and ate till they were full, then the next shift showed up.
Had to take it down. It was mostly over my house, and I am not tempting fate after one severe summer storm showed me what might be.

I’m not sure how to read the colours on the map; there is no legend. I’m assuming dark blue is at least one daily paper, light blue is less than daily, and white has none.

Looking at the Nebraska Panhandle counties, the two “white” ones have a total population of 1,800.

The light blue county at the southwest corner of the Panhandle has The Western Nebraska Observer, a weekly. The Scottsbluff Star-Herald circulates there and in northern Weld County, Colo. to its south.

The small dark blue county on the state line with Wyoming is Scotts Bluff County, served by the daily Scottsbluff Star-Herald and the bi-weekly Gering Courier. They also serve Goshen County in Wyoming and the middle column of Panhandle counties (including mine, all three have weekly county papers as well). The bottom county of that column in light blue is Cheyenne County, served by the bi-weekly Sidney Sun-Telegraph. The right-hand column of counties each has a weekly paper (coloured light blue).

Not sure how your display works, but on mine it shows a legend just above and on the left hand side of the map. Additionally I can mouse over and the underlaying data of the map, the County name plus the number of newspapers will show.

The darkest color (In my case, brown) is “No newspaper”
Yellow-ish is “One weekly paper”
Dark Grey is “One daily”
Light Grey is “More than one newspaper”

Hence, as you note, Scotts Bluff County shows “Scotts Bluff County and Number of Newspapers: 2”. While Sioux County and Banner County show 0 newspapers.

Also, congratulations on freeing your car!

My front door is 220 yards from the road. There is no truth to the persistent rumor that it is protected by automated flamethrowers, machine guns, crocodiles and genetically engineered wolves. I continue to encourage these reports though.

Upon further investigation, we’ve confirmed that the flamethrowers are not automated, they’re entirely homeowner-operated. Also, the wolves are ordinary as-is timberwolves, not genetically engineered.

We apologize for the confusion.

McCarthy is a sad, pathetic little man. Unbelievable cowardice.

How can any sane person manage the current GOP members of the House, given the very slim margin? McCarthy is pathetic but he is not crazy; he is desperate for power and it’s not clear how anyone can handle that clown car. They have no coherent agenda for legislation that appeals or helps any group, except white supremacists and tax-avoiding millionaires and climate-change denying industrialists and Putin-loving oligarchs.

This is why I insist on holding folks ‘in the middle’ who have some issue with abortion but won’t call it baby murder. Abortion is either a medical procedure or it’s murder.

Centrism always aids the oppressor. Challenging someone with a wishy-washy “middle ground” belief forces them to get off the fence. If they continue dodging, they know their true belief would be unacceptable if spoken aloud.

Orson Wells, as Charles Foster Kane, is discussing his paper losing a million dollars a year. He states he’ll lose a million this year, and lose a million next. Then, with that pixie smile, he says that at that rate, he’ll have to close the place in 60 years.

William Randolph Hearst, the model for Charles Foster Kane, didn’t make any of his wealth from his media empire. He used his wealth to purchase a media empire, which he used for political influence.

The source of his wealth is that he was the only child of a miner who hit it big in 1850’s California.

Video

I’ve seen this before. This was one of the early demonstrations of the Flying Boom system which Boeing had invented, and which allowed very large volumes of fuel to be transfered. The previous year, another B-50, the Lucky Lady II, had made the first nonstop flight around the world with the help of four air refuelings by KB-29 tankers. This aircraft had used the clumsy but workable grappled-line/looped-hose technique. Boeing thought they could do better, and they did.
One weakness of the flying boom is that the boom has a fixed minimum size and is too large for carrier based aircraft. Any size plane can refuel from a boom but only fairly large ones can carry the boom itself. The hose and drogue system provides an alternative. This was developed in the UK about the same time as the flying boom in the US. Any aircraft capable of carrying a few hundred pounds externally can operate as a hose and drogue tanker, and fighter-to-fighter “buddy refueling” is fairly common. Hose and drogue refueling is also used for helicopters, since a flying boom is obviously unworkable for that application. Another advantage of hose and drogue is that the tanker can refuel more than one receiver aircraft at a time.

KC-130 tanker refueling 2 CH-53 helicopters.
