Some More News: Why Is Air Travel the Worst?

Hi. The airlines really screwed things up over the holidays and have made flying a generally awful experience for decades. Here’s why that is (spoiler alert: capitalism and deregulation) and how we could potentially make it better.

re: #418 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

So this just happened.

I was wakened by a knock at my front door (that tells me the person is not from my village, because everyone comes to the back door).

The person in question was a Democratic party activist from Lincoln (four hundred miles away). In all the time I’ve lived here, no politician or campaigner ever came to my house.

He is a law student at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and what he was looking for was information from Democrats who might know someone to put up to run against US Senator Deb Fischer in the next election, someone who’s out there but doesn’t know they could garner support. Because my district’s Unicameral seat is up in the next election as well and we have no county Democratic Party, he’s also looking for suggestions for someone who can run for Steve Erdman’s seat.

He said they were looking for the following:

a) An independent or a Democrat
b) A small business owner, farmer, rancher, or well-respected townsperson
c) A veteran
d) A person active in his or her church.

I pointed out I am throwing my hat in the ring for the Unicameral, I meet the first three items, but I am an atheist, not active in any church.

He wished me luck and told me the Democratic Party could not support an atheist. He then left.

Tell them to pound sand and go for it anyway.

I worked for an airline for 14 years. Passengers always wanted to have planes with big seats and full service. However, every single startup that offered that failed miserably. (MGM Grand Air, Air One, Regent Air, McClain, Air Atlanta, EOS Airlines, Legend Airlines and so many more that I forgot). When it comes down to it, passengers nearly always choose the cheapest seat, even if it is a very crappy airline.

Hah. I just brought that forward because it was the end of the last thread.

I didn’t get the chance to tell him to pound sand, because “atheist” scared him off. I’m going to go for it though if my wife is on-board with the idea (she is unsure because of all the driving in this district you have to do to campaign, as District 47 is the whole Panhandle minus Scotts Bluff County).

His objection was based on the fact that they say the Pledge on the floor already every morning. I really don’t think the American people give a rats ass how many times Reps say the Pledge every day. Get to f*cking work you idiots!

So this is just grandstanding.

But again, context and nuance are dead and buried in the cold clam-chowder clusterfuck that is modern political discourse

re: #8 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

For tactical reasons or for ideological reasons? I can see that atheism would simply alienate too many voters in your part of the world.

It will be a long time before a professed atheist becomes President of the USA

Polling on religion shows that atheists are the most active when it comes to supporting political causes, such as volunteering or canvassing, of any religious group in the USA.

(Atheists don’t “profess” atheism. There’s nothing to profess. /s)

Out atheists are about 7% of the population, but we have no representation in the US Government, and only one person in state governments (Nebraska senator Megan Hunt).

In Megan Hunt’s case, in her first election campaign the party scared up a primary challenger against her (the challenger lost). In her second campaign, as a seated state senator, the party again scared up a primary challenger to unseat her, because she is an atheist (they didn’t want an effective legislator, they wanted a Christian. That challenger lost too. See also how Eric Swalwell unseated Pete Stark in California.) There are a few atheists in local positions.

While atheists consistently poll as the most-politically active “religious” group (supporting or opposing bills, &c), atheists are overwhelmingly non-voters, because they see both parties as bigots against us. Open atheists are about 7% of the population, which the Democratic Party leaves on the table and doesn’t try to reach. There is a religious outreach programme in the party, but none to reach out to that large untapped voter base.

It took more than forty years for the Democratic Party to accept a resolution that atheists are valued contributors to American society. Year after year, it was voted down by the DNC because the party wants our votes but doesn’t want to be associated with our taint.

Note all the backlash President Obama got for acknowledging us one time from people in both parties. He never did it again, and neither has President Biden.

Just speculating here. But I am guessing that one thing that Nebraska Democrats might find convincing is a good fact based argument that they should support your candidacy. Perhaps data that shows you have support and, that you could either win or make a good showing that would benefit the party in the future.

You may wish to reach out to Ms Hunt (and perhaps others) and ask what data or arguments they (and donors and other support groups) would like/need to see and would find convincing.

Stark had been in Congress for 4 decades and had, toward the end of his career, a reputation for weird personal insults and a generally cantankerous nature.
The new “jungle primary” where the top two candidates regardless of party face off in the general election may also have factored in.

I’ve been saying this for a while. Every last Trump property needs to be searched by the FBI. Bedminster and Trump Tower have not been searched. That’s an abject failure by the FBI to do their fucking jobs.

DOJ and FBI are failing at basic policy and procedure here. They’re more than happy to search Biden properties, knowing that they’ve got Biden cooperating, but Trump’s already proven to be a liar, thief, mishandling classified info repeatedly, his lawyers have lied on affidavits, and they’re still not running searches against all of Trump’s other properties.

Let them come back after the search and say they found nothing. But they can’t, because they haven’t done it.

That goes for Smith and Garland too, and Garland’s turned into a huge disappointment at DOJ.

(Bloomberg) — Merck & Co.’s Covid-19 pill is giving rise to new mutations of the virus in some patients, according to a study that underscores the risk of trying to intentionally alter the pathogen’s genetic code.

Some researchers worry the drug may create more contagious or health-threatening variations of Covid, which has killed more than 6.8 million people globally over the past three years.

Mutations linked to the use of Merck’s pill, Lagevrio, have been identified in viral samples taken from dozens of patients, according to a preprint study from researchers in the US and at the Francis Crick Institute, Imperial College London and other UK institutions.

The drug-linked mutations of the virus haven’t been shown to be more immune-evasive or lethal yet, according to the study published Friday without peer review on the medRxiv website. But their very existence highlights what some scientists say are potential risks in wider use of the drug, which was recently cleared in China.

Lagevrio works by creating mutations in the Covid genome that prevent the virus from replicating in the body, reducing the chances it will cause severe illness. Some scientists had warned before it was authorized in late 2021 that by virtue of how it works, the drug could give rise to mutations that could turn out to be problematic. The preprint paper has reawakened those worries about the Merck drug.

The violent Trumpites won’t know what hit them, and I am not talking about B-52 strikes against Oaf-keeper concentrations, satisfying as those would be. There are, rather, private citizens preparing a response to Republican terrorism and a breakdown of the rule of law. Among other things, these active citizens are not constrained by a psycho-sexual fixation on commercial small arms. I will say no more except that recent events in Iran may be instructive.

It will be a long time before a professed atheist becomes President of the USA

As a never-Trumper Republican friend of mine once said, she never believed Obama was a Christian because she was sure that he was actually an atheist. But no one who held that viewpoint in public would get elected president in today’s America.

I agree.

My assumption is that she is just non-serious, cynical, performative, and basically doesn’t care about what it actually is. That she finds it a convenient and useful tool to bash others with. And as soon as it loses that usefulness, she will drop it and seek something else.

re: #4 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

Left hanging at the end of the last thread, so I brought it forward.

Yeah, not shocked at this. Like I’ve said before, I’m in the supposedly out-of-control liberal hellhole of Philly’s NJ suburbs, and the few times I’ve mentioned being atheist triggers either eyerolls or anger.

Not surprising that the NE Democratic Party would get weak knees on that, I guess.

What I’m curious about is this kid had to do some legwork to track you down and show up at your door asking for help. I’m guessing he wasn’t randomly knocking on doors in town asking for help finding Democratic candidates, which I’m guessing, at best, would just result in abuse from the homewoners.

Which kinda implies that you’re a known quantity somewhere in the NE Democratic party. Which also means if they made that effort to track you down, shouldn’t they have know you’re atheist? It’s not like you’re ashamed of it and try to hide it (although I guess your neighbors would love that.)

You bring up Eric Swalwell vs Pete Stark from time to time. Not my district, but I’m in the same media region. Atheism was not a factor in Pete Stark’s loss despite Swalwell shooting off his mouth about it.
Stark had been in Congress for 4 decades and had, toward the end of his career, a reputation for weird personal insults and a generally cantankerous nature.
The new “jungle primary” where the top two candidates regardless of party face off in the general election may also have factored in.

—-

I like Eric Swalwell; he’s really good on TV and I agree with most of his politics. But when he was running in that primary, he was looking for any edge to beat a longtime incumbent. It turned out in 2011 that the House held a symbolic vote on whether the United States should keep “In God We Trust” as the national motto. And, this is one of those things where, of course, they’re all going to say “yes” and almost 400 of them did vote that way. But nine members of the House said no. Pete Stark was one of those nine and Eric Swalwell used that fact in his primary press release. “Do we trust Pete Stark to represent our views? The 15th Congressional District deserves a member of Congress who is in touch with its people, can work well with others and can honor our national motto.”

We suspect that there may be a third reason that DeSantis targeted New College
: DeSantis would very much like the votes of white supremacists…

“Changing the culture of New College to better mirror, say, Liberty University is no more viable than changing the culture of Liberty University to better mirror New College.”

yep, visited there with my twins this spring. If he thinks he is changing the culture there good luck. This is all theater. I am extremely liberal and I felt a little out of place there.

As the article mentions he is not going after, at least directly, the bigger schools with very large and aggressive alumni.

I intentionally dropped about 15 worn picks into a friends acoustic, which was in his case, unknown to him.
A few days later he opened it up and spent about a half hour getting them out.
He figured it out.
We wanted to kill me.

whenever my pick would get inside, i’d just hold the guitar hole down and shake. most times, it would drop out in a few seconds. sometimes, a bit longer but it eventually came out.

A few days later he opened it up and spent about a half hour getting them out.
He figured it out.

They don’t think man will be gone in 50,000 years, just that the comet might not be in a stable orbit so might not come by again. I think there’s a fair chance that man will be gone in 50,000 years.

We could be the last humans to ever see the green comet hurtling past Earth from the outer reaches of the solar system in late January and early February.

C/2022 E3 (ZTF), or Comet ZTF for short — the name astronomers gave this space snowball after the Zwicky Transient Facility discovered it in March — hasn’t been in our cosmic neighborhood since the last Ice Age.

Researchers calculated that the icy ball of gas, dust, and rock orbits the sun roughly ever 50,000 years, which means that Neanderthals were still walking the Earth and humans had just migrated out of Africa for the first time when the comet last whizzed by.

We could be the last humans to see the green comet passing Earth for the first time since the Ice Age. Here’s how, where, and when to watch it. (Business Insider)

NO Classified Docs Found At Biden’s Beach House

The FBI conducted a *planned* search of President Joe Biden’s Rehoboth Beach home and found ZERO documents with classified markings. Let me repeat myself - this was PLANNED (meaning NO subpoena) and NOTHING was found with even one classified marking. In the entire house. Biden’s attorney, Bob Bauer, did say that the FBI took a few handwritten notes for further review, but they did not have classified markings on them. The search lasted approximately 3 1/2 hours.

Even though nothing was found, Kristen Welker [MSNBC] had to be the Chuck Todd of daytime cable television, adding: “That last line is significant, Chris, because they wouldn’t have taken these notebooks and other items if they weren’t of some interest. So we’ll have to see what, if anything, comes of that.”

SHUT UP, Kristen.

There is a world in which the cops could have gotten away with murder if they had somehow established qualified immunity and the prosecutor charged them too high - essentially, “Murder 1 requires malice aforethought, but these officers were just overzealous with a random person they stopped during a traffic stop. Tragic, but not Murder 1.” If this is true, that is Murder 1 lock, stock, and barrel for all of them.

I asked him to be specific, what programs do you want to eliminate? Total deer in headlights. Do you want to cut your socialist Social Security and Medicare, or the military you worship? Of course not! Do you know that Social Security, Medicare, and the military make up almost 70% of the budget? Deer in headlights. Then I got called a communist.

Probably not in most states I know of, but that distinction would be left up to Tennessee law. It depends on how they worded the statute.

For example, here in Minnesota, that scenario would most likely fall under Murder 2, the principal charge Derek Chauvin was convicted of after murdering George Floyd. However, the Minnesota statute is unique in that second-degree murder requires “depraved indifference” for the victim’s life.

When I went to Japan in November, I bought the cheapest seats, and then I paid several hundred dollars to upgrade to aisle/exit row seats because I was NOT going to be sitting up against the bulkhead in the middle seat for a 12 hour flight. (Or even a three hour flight to San Francisco.) I probably just should have paid $1800 to start, but you know, those ticket sites are tricksy as hell.

Ouch!

I have pet insurance for these little maniacs, so if they do manage to get themselves in real trouble it won’t be that bad.

My goodness. Now I feel lucky. Last summer my dog chased a chipmunk into the cracks of a granite boulder and cut her cheek: $600 for repair; then on a late-night walk we turned a corner and bumped into another dog walker and my dog bit the other dog’s ear: $900 for emergency vet overnight care (turned out not to be that big of a bite, but I was at fault clearly). When we had her just out of rescue she chewed up a bunch of stuff but thankfully never ingested anything. Now I just keep a tighter hold on the leash and am very careful to avoid other dogs.

Realpolitik, An atheist is almost as tough a sell in Nebraska as it is in Kansas.

You know, being a very open non-church attendee (and I will tell you why, and it starts with churches failing to deal with their child molesters) was pretty much a no-go around here up until the last election. We got redistricted into a barely blue district, and I’m now represented by people who are Not Of The Dominant Religion, because they’re Democrats.

Oh, speaking of sexual predators, Johnny Hunt, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, who was mentioned in the SBC’s predator list because he sexually assaulted the wife of a pastor circa 2010, he’s been restored to preaching by a group of ministers. Southern Baptists can do that, because, well, they’re not a denomination. But ordain a woman or a gay person and holeeeee, the SBC will give you the left foot of fellowship.

Imagine that—they have no problem letting an admitted male sexual predator in the pulpit, but no woman at no time nowhere can preach. Because being a woman is worse than being a male sexual predator. BLARGH.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge in Wisconsin ruled Wednesday that a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the father of a man shot and killed by Kyle Rittenhouse during a protest in 2020 can proceed against Rittenhouse, police officers and others.

The father of Anthony Huber, one of two men shot and killed by Rittenhouse, filed the lawsuit in 2021, accusing officers of allowing for a dangerous situation that violated his son’s constitutional rights and resulted in his death. Anthony Huber’s father, John Huber, also alleged that Rittenhouse, who was 17 at the time of the shootings, conspired with law enforcement to cause harm to protestors. John Huber is seeking unspecified damages from city officials, officers and Rittenhouse.

A Cranky One  Feb 1, 2023 • 4:42:30pm

My daughters were visiting to see how I’m doing after the shoulder replacement surgery.

One noted she’s never seen me wearing other than jeans (I was wearing sweats).

She asked me how I liked the wardrobe change. I replied that it was frustrating not having any pockets.

My spouse and daughters found that hilarious.

I leapt over shame during the heart of the pandemic. Now I go to the store in sweats (and honestly all I need is a goatee to make me look like a “live free or die” dude these days). But in the cold I still have pockets in the sweats, pockets in the hoodie, and pockets in the old Columbia winter coat; and I never put my keys in the same pocket. I hate myself.

We were talking about that with my son’s best friend. Someone needs to start a company that puts real pockets on all women’s dresses they make.

We got just warm enough, but still below freezing, to get some melting of the sleet that covers everything. Now the sun has set. I went to take my dog outside, and what was crunchy sleet that you could get traction in is now a single sheet of ice and it is slick.

With most insurance companies you don’t know if they’ll pay out or not until you file a claim and see how it goes. You don’t have that uncertainty with Trump insurance.

So there’s a new show starting tonight on SyFy called The Ark. A colony ship runs into trouble, half the people (including the top military command) die, the ship is seriously damaged, blah blah the expedition must try to survive and get to a survivable location…

Dean Devlin (‘Leverage’) and Jonathan Glassner (‘Stargate SG-1’) exec produce, which would sound promising, but the reviews I’ve found so far say “it gets pretty good starting around episode 4”.

I stopped using a purse about 10 years ago. All my skirts & blouses have pockets. I was really frustrated though at my granddaughter’s wedding because evening gowns still don’t have pockets and those fancy expensive little handbags are soo annoying to carry around. I couldn’t carry it slung over my shoulder because the handbag chain kept getting caught on the gown beadwork.
