The End: Twitter Announces Ridiculous New Paywall for API Use

Internet • Views: 15,105

This is the end, my only friend, the end.

The end of Twitter.

Because Elon Musk is now going to make people pay to use Twitter’s API.

API stands for Application Programming Interface, and it’s how an external application gets access to Twitter’s data, allowing the creation of helpful bots (and bad ones), applications for viewing and collecting tweets, and much, much more.

I’ve been using the Twitter API at LGF for years, doing tasks like automatically tweeting links to new posts, embedding tweets in LGF comments, etc. And 500 API calls per month — reportedly the cheapest plan at $149 — wouldn’t even begin to cover our usage. So all those features will be going away soon, and I’ll be focusing much more intensively on Mastodon and other decentralized apps that Elon Musk can’t destroy.

I know Twitter won’t go belly up overnight, but this is where the downward slide really begins. Thousands of applications and tools people use, enjoy, and in some cases rely on for important research will simply stop working, and not many individuals will be able to afford these absurd prices.

It’s sad to watch this happening, but there will come a day when we say, “At least Twitter isn’t suffering any more.”

Another point besides the one I raised on Mastodon: Hosting a site isn’t terribly expensive these days. A Twitter API license that covers enough usage for a site like LGF could easily run many times more than it ordinarily costs to operate the site otherwise. And again, ain’t nobody going to try to turn around in the span of a WEEK and say, “We have to charge every user of the site $X to play here,” or in the alternative, make Twitter features available only to those willing to pay for them.

Tweetdeck is owned by Twitter and has its own integrations, so I would actually expect it to continue to work. I would, however, expect Twitter to announce that Tweetdeck is a paid feature coming Soon (tm).

No, because Twitter owns TweetDeck. But I still expect it to be killed soon, because it doesn’t put money in Musk’s pocket.

People suggesting malevolent motives to Phony Stark and moves like these seem to be missing that this is not something new or different in tech industries. This is almost the textbook example of why you don’t bring in execs from non-tech industries and install them as your new CEO because they’re a “whiz kid.” Name a major brand that took a tumble in the last 30-40 years in the tech sector and odds are there was a leadership change where the new guy made a whole lot of controversial changes once in power that pissed off the user base in the belief that they had a product so unique that nobody would leave them for competing brands. If Musk is doing anything malevolent, it’s almost as though he’s trying to milk all the money he can out of Twitter with the intention of dumping it in a few months and then using some obscure tax code provision to write off the remaining debt.

It would be work, but because the ActivityPub spec is open-source, there’s no reason a non-federated site couldn’t implement it. It would, however, be up to the fediverse to allow it to integrate with their instances, so the results might not be worth the effort.

Seriously, Musk is the kinda guy who probably tasked somebody on the first day to get him a list of all the items and services that Twitter offered for free, then has sat at meetings go down said list and asking staff “We’re giving this stuff away! We could make a fortune if we started charging people!,” meeting panicked staffers telling him that doing that would kill brand loyalty with the usual rich guy disbelief because “So many people use our service, there’s no way they’ll stop because they have to start paying for it!”

I don’t know about your whereabouts, but in this stretch of the woods (DFW), unless you have a bank/credit union who offers the service without charge, notarization always has around a $6.00 minimum fee that is required for any oath/seal request.

Nebraska Republicans are effectively trying to pass a poll tax.

Yup. That’s exactly what Sen. Slama is trying to do. But since it’s a fee not imposed by the government, if this passes and someone brings a case to the federal courts, the state will argue it’s not a tax because the state is not charging for it, a private individual is.

All I can say is ‘good luck with that’ because Notary Publics are licensed agents of the state they represent (including an official state seal), and are required to take an oath of office. Additionally, the fees charged are state-mandated, and only some banks/credit unions would waive these fees for their members. So even those people are paying for the service, just indirectly,

I think it’s more likely that he’s trying to monetize every aspect of Twitter that he can because he’s got bankers breathing down his neck about all the damage he’s done to the brand with his dudebro antics. The State of Nebraska charges no fee nor requires one. Notaries public may charge a nominal fee for their service but are not required to. That’s how the state gets out of the “poll tax” accusation.

33-133.
Notaries public; fees; governmental employee; limitation.

Except as otherwise provided in this section, notaries public may charge and collect fees as follows: For each protest, one dollar; for recording the same, two dollars; for each notice of protest, two dollars; for taking affidavits and seal, two dollars; for administering oath or affirmation, two dollars; for each certificate and seal, five dollars; for taking acknowledgment of deed or other instrument, five dollars; and for each mile traveled in serving notice, mileage at the rate provided in section 81-1176. An employee of the state or its political subdivisions may not charge the fees prescribed in this section if his or her governmental employer paid the commission and bonding fees required of notaries public.

Wrong way to look at it. If these are products/services that were already being made available at no cost, then any money generated by slapping a price on them goes in the ledger as new profit. So it’s not a question of “Will enough people pay to make this a worthwhile endeavor?,” but instead “Will the money generated from this be enough to offset losses elsewhere?”

There are no easy ways to fill those empty judicial seats, which means that the problems will persist, or get worse should the GOP retake the WH and/or Senate.

Most online businesses are tied to Twitter to drive traffic to their sites in some fashion, or to get word out to their customer base. News businesses use Twitter to drive traffic/interactions eyeballs to their content.

All of that goes away with this move. Sure, some businesses will pony up to maintain the connection, but if eyeballs are dropping at Twitter, it becomes diminishing returns and people will look elsewhere.

Heck, we’re already seeing it with Facebook too as other social media sites are getting in on the action as legacy social media sites fall by the wayside.

HOGAN: Yeah, as I’ve said, Hugh, I don’t think it is going to be Donald Trump, but you know, we’ll cross that bridge or jump off that bridge when we come to it.

HEWITT: Now wait a minute… If Trump is the nominee, does Larry Hogan support him?

HOGAN: Yeah, I just don’t think he’s going to be the nominee, but I’ll support the nominee.

HEWITT: There you go. That’s what I wanted.

Gerry Rafferty, who sang both, was in Steeler’s Wheel but I’m referring only to the band, not individuals who went on to solo careers or had hits with others.

No snark intended.

Just remembered when I heard “Baker’s Street” on the radio in the 70s it was, “I’ve heard that voice before.” And subsequently discovered Gerry Rafferty did the vocals on both.

That he’ll fill the books with lots of “profits” so it looks like a worthwhile acquisition to some investment firm or perhaps an aspiring tech firm looking to get into the social media business at a bargain.

Wrong way to look at it. If these are products/services that were already being made available at no cost, then any money generated by slapping a price on them goes in the ledger as new profit. So it’s not a question of “Will enough people pay to make this a worthwhile endeavor?,” but instead “Will the money generated from this be enough to offset losses elsewhere?”

you’re right in that any new revenue contributes.

and while every dollar helps, if it’s not substantial it’s gonna be insignificant to meaningless compared to the monumental losses being generated.

and second, i think every fee will cause the loss of more eyeballs.
that translates into lost ad revenue.
im guessing that to be more than any fee revenue gained

Actually, I had to look up the fact Rafferty was in SW. When Baker Street came out, I had no idea who he was and it wasn’t as easy in 1978 to get background on anyone as it is now so I never cared enough to do so.

There’s been grousing that the Democrats haven’t been able to find people to fill judicial slots across the South. GOPers have blue slips available to block those nominations in any event, and it takes someone to proffer the nomination.

Its idiotic hideous financial thinking

You cannot save money by spending money to save taxes.
You will *always* finish up with less money after taxes

My MIL was incredulous over my pleasure in paying off my home mortgage ten years ago because my taxes would get higher. Her response to my “why would I pay the bank $1000 to save $300 in taxes?” was a very sarcastic “that’s not how it works”.

And, yes, I know that there are sometimes reasons to have a home mortgage even if you can pay it off - cash flow concerns, freeing up money for better investments, etc. - but that wasn’t her argument.

Given how they made the announcement only a week before implementation, I suspect the plan is to basically create the temporary impression of a sudden influx of “profits” as people who depend upon the API fork over for at least the first month while they research alternatives. That by the time enough users have pulled the plug, whoever Musk is looking to offload this albatross onto will have been conned into believing that Twitter is wildly “profitable.”

Clemons was a sophomore studying biological sciences, according to a campus email sent by UM System President Mun Choi.

If I were conspiracy-minded, and I’m not saying I am, I might believe Musk actually wants Twitter dead and buried. Every single action he has taken has led to sticking in that knife just a bit deeper. Given how much money he sunk into this thing, it’s hard to rationalize why he’d do that. Must be 12-level chess, or something.

Twitter was already losing millions of dollars a day when he took over. It isn’t like he is sinking a thriving company. The first boneheaded move was buying the company for way more than it was worth, everything after that is just flailing. He didn’t have to buy twitter to kill it, it was already dying. It doesn’t matter how many people are loyal to the service if you can’t find a way to monetize it.

You were a bad parent if you didn’t beat your children; likewise a bad spouse if you didn’t beat your wife. Not everyone believed that, naturally, but it was common. “In 1824, the Mississippi Supreme Court, citing the rule of thumb, established a positive right to wife-beating in State v. Bradley, a precedent which would hold sway in common law for decades to come.” (wiki)

Said Santos: “He’s violated the trust that we had in him.”

Donald Trump claimed Ron DeSantis begged him for his endorsement when he first ran for governor in 2018.

Said Trump: “He had nothing! He was dead, he was leaving the race, he came over and he begged me, begged me, for an endorsement. He was getting ready to drop out.”

He elaborated: “There were tears coming down from his eyes. He said ‘if you endorse me, I’ll win.’ So I end up doing it, and he wins. They say it was like a bomb went off. Just a bomb totally went off. From the moment I endorsed him, he went from losing by numbers that were not catchable to winning easily.”

What’s happening: A total of 109 Democrats joined Republicans in voting for a resolution that would denounce socialism, with the measure passing 328-86 Thursday. Fourteen Democrats voted present, while three Democrats and three Republicans did not vote.

The resolution, introduced by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.), denounced the “horrors of socialism” while also condemning a list of communist dictators, such as Vladimir Lenin and Kim Jong Un. Russian President Vladimir Putin was not included in the list of leaders. Read that resolution here.

Breadcrumbs of defectors: Democrats were publicly divided on where they stood on the legislation. The New Democrat Coalition, a group of nearly 100 lawmakers that are primarily centrists, tweeted a statement rejecting socialism.

They could, they may not. They specifically removed her from the foreign affairs committee and didn’t remove her from other committes she was already on. They could have moved to remove her from all committees but didn’t, so maybe they will be happy with the bit of political theater and move on.

In my case, I decided that I could earn more money (especially now) from investments than the interest rate on my mortgage.

There have been so many shootings, not all of them are making the news any more. This one only made Nebraska news because the guy didn’t hit anyone when he opened fire.

Will Frei had a grateful heart on Wednesday.

The day before, two men had come to the rescue of his pregnant wife and toddler son when they fell to the ground while fleeing the west Omaha Target where an active shooter was roaming the floor.

“Some guys were across the street at the gas station, they saw it happening, backed the car up and tossed them in,” he said.

The store, 17810 West Center Road, opened for two hours Wednesday afternoon so those who left belongings could retrieve them. In ones and twos, people came back for purses, baby carriers and car keys.

Frei was there to pick up his wife’s purse.

“Nick and Levi” from White Horse Utilities were the two men, he said.

“I want to give those guys credit. They were awesome to jump in and help out,” Frei said.

So, wait. They voted to seat her… then immediately voted to remove her? What a crock of performative bullshit.

That’s correct. The slate of members was put up to a vote of the full US House. If there was an objection to any member, a representative could have challenged that person on the slate at that time.

Should Clergy Be Mandated Reporters? New York’s CARE Act Says Yes

If a member of the clergy suspects a child in the congregation has been abused, is the clergyperson legally required to report it?

In New York state, the answer is no. But some advocates, clergy and lawmakers think that should change.

This issue is at the heart the Child Abuse Reporting Expansion Act, a bill making its way through New York state Legislature that, if passed, would make clergy mandated reporters.

A number of domestic violence and child abuse advocates along with clergymembers are advocating for the bill.

While the balloon’s current flight path carries it over “a number of sensitive sites,” the official said it does not present a significant intelligence gathering risk. The balloon is assessed to have “limited additive value” from an intelligence collection perspective, the official added.

The US believes Chinese spy satellites in low Earth orbit are capable of offering similar or better intelligence, limiting the value of whatever Beijing can glean from the high-altitude balloon, which is the size of three buses, according to another defense official.

“It does not create significant value added over and above what the PRC is likely able to collect through things like satellites in low Earth orbit,” the senior defense official said.

The US government has engaged with the Chinese government both through the Chinese embassy in Washington and the US diplomatic mission in China, according to the official.

It was the “strong recommendation” of senior military leaders, including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, “not to take kinetic action due to the risk to safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field,” the official said.

So, yawn!

This is the “new group” after Congress took control of the National Prayer Breakfast away from The Family.

The current group was allegedly founded to be more inclusive, and get rid of the religious lobbying that occurred during the Breakfast.

However, the Congressional mission statement of the new group reads:

“…[O]ur annual Breakfast is an opportunity for Members of Congress to pray collectively for our nation, the President of the United States, and other national and international leaders in the spirit of love and reconciliation as Jesus of Nazareth taught 2,000 years ago. Every president, regardless of party or religious persuasion, has joined since. All faiths are welcome.”

That is not “inclusive.”

Also, the current group’s board has many of the same members of The Family that the old group had.

Sens. Lankford (R-Okla.) and Coons (D-Del.) combined forces to create the new group.

There were concerns after Maria Butina became a fixture at the previous group’s events.

President Eisenhower (R) made the National Prayer Breakfast run by The Family a fixture of our government.
