re: #3 No Malarkey!
This short line railroad was the victim of multiple mergers and bankruptcies over the years and the neglect shows. Much of the 53 mile long stretch of rail is built over Ohio’s Great Black Swamp and is in poor state of repair. The current rated load capacity of the track is supposed to be 263,000 lbs.
re: #3 No Malarkey!
How can you expect straight and level track when the front office needs billions to buy back stock and boost the value of their stock options?
re: #3 No Malarkey!
What’s True
A viral video shows a real train riding on “bendy” train tracks. However…
What’s False
The creator of the video noted in the YouTube video description that the first 52 seconds showed sped-up video. In reality, the train carefully advanced on the tracks about seven times slower than what appeared in the video.
re: #3 No Malarkey!
When were those tracks laid down? In the 1850’s?

The thing is, a track in that state would be forbidden to drive on here in Sweden. Period. No exceptions except for the rail vehicles which lay the new tracks…

They are certainly relying on people doing the normal thing when getting contracts: not reading the fine print. It’s a shame that the leadership of most companies seems immune from criminal actions, except financial crimes that harm their wealthy shareholders. If more chief executives went to prison for extended periods, companies might be better run.

re: #20 The Pie Overlord!
The other thing you will see within a month in the region is door-to-door water (or air) sampling being done by people with very “federal looking” IDs and paperwork. But they will be some fly-by-night firm contracted by the NS and their paperwork will have the same clauses declaring the NS free of any liability claims or compensation from the signee.
It’s simply an obvious move to make along the same lines as the various energy companies soliciting for your power contract every year and trying to pass themselves off as employees of the local electrical utility company. Including asking to look at your electricity bill.

It’s clear that they’re using ancient tech on that rail line. They aren’t welded rails, which means that the likelihood of a derailment is far higher. It’s the kind of line that should be shut down until it is brought up to modern standards.

Yep. Just read the form in total — and what it seems to be saying is that it holds those who enter the property for the sole purpose of checking the water quality harmless for any damage they do. It doesn’t apply to the damage done by the train and release of toxic chemicals; only to the more limited potential problem of those check the water and who may inadvertently do harm, such as to the garden.

en.wikipedia.org
Wiki link for the shortline railroad that owns that stretch of track. The video is from 2017.
Most of the shortline railroads are Class III and have limited usage; e.g. they are point-to-point for limited industrial use much like a spur line. Many are held by a larger overall company.
And a lot got spun off as the Big 4 (NS, BNSF, UP, CSXT) buy track and get told they have too much and thus they cut loose a stretch of low priority and relatively unprofitable track for someone else to have and run - often with obsolescent equipment from the Big 4. (One of the local shortlines in/near Pittsburgh called the AVR ran their trains with a CSXT-painted engine for a few years before they repainted it to their own colors.)
Most of the Class III railroads have low income, issues with infrastructure, and essentially need grants from the state or federal government to do the necessary repairs to their lines to redo grading, replace sleepers, and replace rails and signage.

The targets of all treachery: Delusional ideation, paranoia, and the need for uniqueness as mediators between two forms of narcissism and conspiracy beliefs - Science Direct
The present cross-sectional study (NParticipants = 397; NInformants = 460) examined the association of both grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism with conspiracy beliefs in the context of four theoretically-relevant mediators. Participants who were higher in grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism were more likely to believe in conspiracy theories, seemingly because they were more likely to hold unusual beliefs. There was, likewise, some evidence to suggest that those high in vulnerable narcissism believe in conspiracy theories because they suffer from paranoia, whereas those high in grandiose narcissism believe in conspiracy theories because of a desire to be unique. Together, these results suggest that the conspiracist ideation seen among those high in grandiose narcissism and vulnerable narcissism is a consequence of features that are shared between and unique to each of the traits.

Mother Jones on the #DiedSuddenly hashtag, movie, and trend
The 16 million people who have watched the film Died Suddenly on the far-right platform Rumble may have been expecting more of what they saw on social media: titillating speculation about Covid vaccines’ role in celebrity deaths. Yet viewers of Died Suddenly encounter much more than just a tired and repeatedly discredited strain of medical misinformation. Its premise is that the vaccines are a tool of global elites who want to “depopulate” the world—a variation on the “Great Reset” narrative that “globalists” like George Soros and Bill Gates orchestrated the pandemic in order to reprogram people to accept a new age of Marxism. This conspiracy theory gained traction in neo-Nazi and white nationalist groups, which are increasingly intermingling with the anti-vaccine movement.

In Philadelphia there were articles about on at least a yearly basis on how bad the rail infrastructure was in the area and especially in western New Jersey on the other side of the Delaware River. A lot of creeks and streams running into the river there that require rail bridges and/or road bridges. And a lot of rail traffic since it is a pretty heavily industrialized area with the various refineries, factories, etc. etc.
And small derailments were not uncommon. Every so often they get noticed due to a spill or simply happening in a very noticeable location - like right over the Schuylkill River on a bridge in the middle of Philadelphia itself. I forget how long it took them to clear that simply due to the difficultly of getting sufficient lifting equipment to the railcar itself.

The creator of the video noted in the YouTube video description that the first 52 seconds showed sped-up video. In reality, the train carefully advanced on the tracks about seven times slower than what appeared in the video.
Oh. That’s ok then. 👀
A party that is readying for autocracy must populate its elite with criminals. This is an ongoing process within the GOP. It is why participants in J6 were encouraged to run for office. And why Proud Boys & Oath Keepers and frauds like Santos are supported. https://t.co/1azVJfjcWV

what it means is that there is a huge need for a media that reports facts (not just Dem friendly facts, but facts). A vibrant 4th estate is just like a national HR department and right now, HR is completely beholden to the stockholders, not the company itself.

Musk is desperately trying to design an approach that makes the site profitable — or at least provide sufficient revenue to cover his operation costs and interest payments. He figures if he can persuade 10% of users to pay the approximately $100 annually he is charging he will have the income needed to survive and prosper.
If you want your Twitter account to be secure you’re gonna have to pay.

Looks like everyone has their ICS-100 training up to date.
I did read the form.
If you are a homeowner in East Palestine and they come to your door, sign it.
But you aren’t in East Palestine are you.
What I read is, IF they take samples and deem your abode safe, and that reading was incorrect, you signed away any recourse for redress or anything approaching damages.
The plumes will spread, later readings will be higher or lower.
They are doing this now to cover their asses and get people to sign off.
They didn’t even clean up the creeks.
My response is get out of my face, off my property, and eff off.

There Ain’t No Sanity Clause is an odd ditty though: it’s basically a diss track against themselves, with verses rewritten as the band lineup has changed over the years.

Re: the other GOP freshman Congressman Ogles.
He claims to be an economist; based on credentials released in prior years, he does have a Bachelor of Science degree, with a major in International Relations, and minors in English and psychology. No one seems to be disputing those assertions. He apparently is staking his claim to be an economist based on receiving an Executive Certificate from the Dartmouth Tuck School of Business in the subject of managerial economics. Clearly a very overstated exaggeration but not quite Santos level of dishonesty in that one aspect of his background.

Stand Your Ground seems to only apply to straight white people.
Stand your ground means you get to shoot anyone you feel threatened by.
So straight white cis males can shoot anyone. Anyone else who tries? The “judicial” system sez they were wrong.
re: #166 John Hughes
Stand Your Ground was a bizarro-world pendulum-swing against laws in quite a lot of states that say you have a “duty to retreat” before you are legally permitted to use lethal force in self-defense. These “duty to retreat” laws mean that even if you’re 78 years old and wheelchair-bound, you must show that you attempted to retreat from an assailant or home invader before you can defend yourself with force, lest ye be found guilty of murder.
“Castle doctrine” generally means that if someone enters your home against your will, you are assumed to have the right to assume your life is in danger and use lethal force to defend yourself.
Stand Your Ground, as I (barely) understand it extends the no-duty-to-retreat idea to areas outside your home.
