Metheny’s compositions can be fiendishly hard to improvise over. One of the most amazing things about him is how he can play through the most unexpected changes in a totally musical way, not showing off, but finding the real heart of the melody. He’s kind of unparalleled at that.

The problem with the narrative is that most Americans support Ukraine, and know the president and the country can multitask.

Not sure this approach is going get much traction outside of the nut-right: at least judging by these posts, the carping seems less to be about “national interest(s)”, and more just personalized criticism of Biden and Trudeau.
Though I’m sure the RWNM will be turning up the volume the longer the war continues (especially if it develops to Ukraine’s advantage).

Kadyrov is setting up for the inevitable power struggle. And I wouldn’t be at all surprised if that post-Putin power struggle quickly degenerates into an exceedingly bloody affair.
May the affair be exceedingly bloody indeed…to the point where oligarchs send their kids to relative safety only to see them ‘falling from windows’ at sea level.

Good ol’ Soviet-style “whataboutism,” proof that the far-right can recycle when they want to. The last two Republicans got a pass when they retreated to their ranch/golf courses respectively because “You liberals are dumb, of course he can do his job from there!” But a Democrat makes a historic visit to an active war zone where there is no US presence to show US support for an important ally on President’s Day and all we get is “WHAT ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS HERE!?!” Comrade Stalin would be proud.

NATO has been hunting down, with some success, the Russian operatives based in Europe for the past year. And has been expelling Russian Embassy staff responsible for overseeing them.
Certainly the Russians have been trying stuff, like the North Sea pipeline cut, the attack on the Bulgarian ammunition plant, and the letter bombs in Spain. Hopefully their abilities have been badly degraded.
As for direct attacks from Russian based operatives, that might be much higher risk for the Russians.

All we heard through most of 2020 was about how there was about to be a mass exodus to red states, as city dwellers whose jobs were going WFH would flee to rural towns to get away from “tax-and-spend” liberal politics to save on living expenses. But the exodus never happened, and social media sites are full of people who made the journey telling their tales of woe about they now can’t afford to leave despite hating the culture and politics of the places they moved to to save a few bucks.

When we build the giant Galt’s Gulag for lepertarians, we should set aside some space for Repentant Refugee Re-adjustment camps. These would be for gullible Californicators who fled to Texas to save money or escape progress, only to find that they hate being governed by brutal grifters and surrounded by their moronic supporters. They would gradually be re-adjusted and nurtured until, at some future time, they are fit to live among civilized humans again.

I can definitely see why MAGAts are seething today. Their God-Emperor couldn’t even be bothered to visit gravestones while it was drizzling because he worried his hair would get wet. Traveling to an active war zone under constant threat of attack to attend an event where he was not the center of everything and getting nothing out of it would be downright unthinkable for him.

I’ve found myself wondering from time to time how many of them thought it was gonna be like some cheesy 90s rom-com, where they’d travel to some rural town that still thinks every portable music player smaller than a breadbox is a “Walkman,” charm the locals with their shining personalities, transform the culture around them into a mix of simple country life with modern conveniences, and win the heart of the shy but cultured heir of the local family dynasty.
Only to get there and realize that the locals view them as either suspicious or a freak, the local internet provider is still boasting about the speed of their new DSL service, the only conversion going on is fundies banging on their door daily to get them to join their church, and the local dynasty has a gene pool shallower than a parking lot puddle.

5th person confirmed to be cured of HIV (ABC News, February 20, 2023)
Researchers are announcing that a 53-year-old man in Germany has been cured of HIV.
Referred to as “the Dusseldorf patient” to protect his privacy, researchers said he is the fifth confirmed case of an HIV cure. Although the details of his successful treatment were first announced at a conference in 2019, researchers could not confirm he had been officially cured at that time.
Today, researchers announced the Dusseldorf patient still has no detectable virus in his body, even after stopping his HIV medication four years ago.
It turns out that the reason researcher can do this is there is a particular gene which deletes production of a protein which HIV uses to enter a human cell. 1% of people are thought to have this gene, making them naturally resistant to the virus.
The procedure involves taking stem cells with this genetic mutation, reproducing them, and using these cells to “replace” the immune system of the patient with AIDS. Over time, the virus can no longer replicate within immune cells, causing its demise.

Even if we hadn’t experienced 2+ years of bugnuts-crazy conspiracy theories about a global conspiracy using COVID to push vaccines meant to do…something, we have to keep in mind that millions of our fellow humans view HIV/AIDs as a “punishment” on various “undesirable” populations and would oppose such a cure if only to continue the suffering.

It turns out the Freedom from Religion Foundation was not exactly impressed with Gov. Huckabee-Sanders’s (R-Ark.) response to the State of the Union Address. They dissected her speech.
Gov. Huckabee Sanders: A hypocritical master of doublespeak (February 9, 2023)
Huh. The Queensland police have labelled the murder of two police officers and a neighbour a Christian terrorist attack. Not mental illness. Not lone wolf.
Queensland police say Wieambilla shooting was ‘a religiously motivated terrorist attack’ (Australian Broadcasting Corporation, 16 February 2023)
These three people are real nutbars.
Police found camouflaged hiding places at the property, barriers such as dirt mounds and logs, six firearms, three bow and arrows, a number of knives, CCTV, radios, mirrors on trees, and a trap door under the house, which might have enabled an easy escape.
Deputy Commissioner Linford said police had been investigating Stacey Train’s diary, as well as the trio’s texts, social media postings and 190 interviews.
“What we’ve been able to glean from that information is that the Train family members subscribe to what we would call a broad Christian fundamentalist belief system, known as premillennialism,” she said.
Deputy Police Commissioner Linford said the trio saw police “as monsters and demons”.

One of the largest downsides to the creation of the Internet was that it allowed people who previously had to organize meetings in disused meeting halls with poorly-made flyers and through ads in the local free newspapers just to have screaming fits about global conspiracies are now not only able to do so with great ease, but they’re able to spread their lunacy across the globe at the speed of light.

Then I remember I’ll never have hundreds of billions of dollars, so the point is moot.

Most of Putin’s set pieces are boring. I have trouble remembering a big one, except maybe the 2018 state of the nation, where he imagined hitting Florida with a nuclear cruise missile. But those in audience have to be sitting and saying: that’s it?
— Andrew Roth (@Andrew__Roth) February 21, 2023
I started to remark about how Putin thinks “The war being a total shitshow was always part of the plan!” is a winning argument until I remembered that the Russian people have been getting fed absolute horseshit about the war since Day One.
But hey, at least he’s nice enough to tell them that the regime has no plans to go past beating and jailing dissidents. Perhaps he’s planning to sell them on his grand plan later to offer those jailed the reprieve of serving on the front lines in lieu of a prison sentence.

It’s the sort of speech you expect to hear from a politician who knows his favorables are shit but there’s little he can do to fix them in time for the election: “Yeah, things have gone tits-up, but I promise not to make them worse and possibly a little bit better! Vote for me!”

I can’t recall now how much Zuck wanted to charge people for some bullshit on Facebook (or Meta or whatever the hell he’s calling it these days), but you know what, I’d much rather spend $100 on this:
Lemme give you the rundown - 316L solid stainless steel brushed case with polished accents, on a stainless steel bracelet with a milled tri-fold clasp and locking hasp, ceramic bezel, highly luminous hands and bezel indicators (lume on both lasts all night, so about eight hours), sapphire crystal, signed screw-down crown and caseback, claimed water resistance to 200 meters (to be fair, I don’t have a pressure tester, so I can’t vouch for that) and powered by a Seiko NH35A 24 jewel automatic movement with a hacking 40-hour power reserve, 21,600 bph and I’ve noticed variance of around +5 seconds per day.
Yep, for $100…with free international shipping. The only critique I had was that the bracelet was initially a bit jangly, so I soaked it in mineral oil for a couple hours, and now it’s as smooth as silk. Everything else was grade-A, top notch. This particular watch (Steeldive SD1970, an obvious homage to the Seiko 6105-8110) is, IMHO, maybe the best value-for-money wristwatch you can find on AliExpress. And it’s genuinely well-made, to boot; whomever is behind this has a pretty solid QC game going on. I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now as a daily wear, and it’s great.
So Zuck can take his internet grift and stick it where the Sun don’t shine. And Elon Musk, too. I have better - and shinier - things to spend my money on.

My seiko from 2008. I had to reset the date a couple of times, and had it go through a ten minute spell once where the minute hand seemingly got hung up. By the time I’d figured out where one sends a seiko for repair, it had straightened itself out and no problems since. Note that we’re in year 3 of our leap year sequence, and it’s 0830 rather than 2030.
Things that work well forever are few and far between.

A Seiko Kinetic. Those are nice - never had one myself, but I know a couple people who did and they love ‘em. Pretty much a set-it-and-forget-it kind of watch, like the Citizen Eco-Drive range. And they’re solid watches, too.
In gaming news, major publishing studio Bungie (former owner/developer of the Halo franchise, current publishers of the Destiny franchise) has prevailed in a massive DMCA lawsuit against an aim hack cheat developer. In arbitration, the judge ruled that the cheaters unlawfully bypassed Bungie’s copyright security and Terms of Service, and awarded the company $3.6M in damages and $700k in lawyer’s fees. They continue with another action against another cheat company, but this ruling provides strong protection for legitimate gamers against the cheating bastards.

He was in Staten Island too, all to court right wingers and cops for his fascist agenda.
He claimed he was a law and order type. Too bad crime rates in FL are higher than in NY. NY has lower homicide rate than FL. Lower crime rates overall too.
Why? Because FL is making it easier for people to get and use guns in crimes, while NY holds the line on gun regulations in the face of an activist right wing SCOTUS that eviscerated the 2A.
DeSantis came to NY claiming to be law and order guy, and all he does is gaslight and lie. Bail reform isn’t causing crime - influx of readily available guns is the problem, and GOP is busy making all of it worse by relaxing gun regulations in states they control.

It’s noodles. Specifically, several varieties of Korean ramen that we really enjoy, but we literally just finished one package yesterday. The U.S. Department of Justice has shut down a Christian “health share” ministry whose owners supposedly took in millions of dollars from gullible members only to use that money to line their own pockets rather than reimburse clients when they needed their medical expenses covered.
According to the Kansas City Star, Medical Cost Sharing Inc., which was based in Missouri, took in upwards of $750/month per member with the promise of helping them pay for health coverage alongside other fellow believers. Point is that the GOP knows that lower-income voters spend a bigger share of their income on basics like gasoline and groceries than higher earners, so they are going to zoom in on those issues and convince them that the only way to lower inflation is by throttling government spending, especially on anything woke or LGBTQ-friendly.

And I quite liked Microsoft Editors suggestions:
The Russian State TV didn’t take Biden’s trip well:
Buzhinsky didn’t object to the idea of killing the American president, as long as his replacement was more in line with Russia’s interests. He wasn’t comfortable with the thought of Vice President Kamala Harris at the helm, claiming that, unlike Biden, Harris would be completely unrestrained in her response to Russia and would present an even worse option for the Kremlin. As opposed to Skabeeva’s suggestion of assassinating Biden, he regretted that the U.S. president wasn’t at least terrorized during his trip. Buzhinsky daydreamed that if Biden traveled to Ukraine by helicopter, he would have been escorted by Russian planes all the way to Kyiv, leaving him with an indelible impression.
Irritated, Skabeeva pointed out, “Following your logic, if we’re not starting this confrontation because the replacement will be even worse, then why did we even start this at all? What if everything will only get worse?”

There isn’t much that Russia can actually achieve to increase their nuclear capabilities outside New START. They don’t have the launch platforms to expand their nuclear warhead delivery capability by much if any at all. They might (re)deploy nuclear armed cruise missiles but, ahem, they’ve used up more than a few of those in the current conflict against Ukraine with the warheads replaced by dummy weights, and the production lines for such missiles were shut down a long time back. Ramping up the number of silo-based ICBMs would cost a lot of money and doing that wouldn’t even exceed existing New START limitations — analysts figure the Russian siloed ICBM fleet is ten percent of what it used to be, although the new missiles are a lot more capable than the older models they’re replacing.
About the only thing it puts a stop to is the inspection and verification process which is a pity but modern satellite imaging does a lot of what required boots-on-the-ground in the past. Worst case the US could fly Aliexpress spy balloons over Siberia…

I assume someone in Trump’s entourage will be smart enough to try to make sure none of that performance is filmed. Since Trump doing that as a defense witness for a bunch of insurrectionists is pretty much a complete slap at them of Trump not caring or having their backs one iota.
And I presume the judge’s instructions to the jury afterwards is to have them ignore all of it. Trump taking the 5th can’t be held as a trial indication that their defense is valid (IMO) since it also can’t be held as a trial indication that Trump is guilty of vocally pushing for the insurrection to take place.
Then again, it probably somehow will convince someone on the jury to acquit anyways.

re: #212 darthstar
President Biden just delivered a powerful speech. I’m old enough to remember when everyone was worried he was gaffe prone.
Many still insist that he is. And will continue to do so no matter what he says or does.
re: #211 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
This is why we need to ban abortion (producing more unwanted, unplanned children) and further cut government spending (because lowering taxes will solve all our problems, including caring homeless orphans)
Republicans want America to be a mess. Well-adjusted people do not vote for Republicans. If you fuck up kids and create a Republican or a violent criminal, Republicans win.
re: #207 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
I am surprised, and I can only surmise he has some cunning strategy planned for his appearance. One can only hope that he thought it out all on his own without or against the advice of his attorneys…
I’ve got twenty bucks that says the defense has to treat him as a hostile witness.
SCOTUS doesn’t grant review in any new cases this morning. Ketanji Brown Jackson, joined by Sonia Sotomayor, dissents from the court’s denial of review in Davis v. United States, a prisoner’s claim that his lawyer gave improper advice about a plea deal. https://t.co/sPFjl94QpX

I half-expect at this point is that he will “accept”. (And put out the message to the red meat troops that he is going to back them.) And then he’ll insist on a whole bunch of pre-condtions for the appearance; e.g. Not in the court, gets all the expected questions (including the cross-examination ones) in advance, etc. etc. And when those are rejected he refutes the acceptance with a claim that the court is biased.

Biden offered nicely. Now it’s time for the stick.

And watch the NS try to drag this out in court as long as possible with the hope of getting a friendly administration to cut them a deal a few years down the line.

re: #190 Dopamine Fish
Does… does he realize that the defense is calling him? As in, “We want you to come in and explain to us why, exactly, these guys were ‘just following orders’ and should be let off the hook?” As in, that opens him up to liability because he’d be admitting in open court that January 6th was all his doing?
If Trump actually appears in court, it will be interesting to hear him ramble on under cross examination. The prosecution eagerly waits.

Not ripping it up.
Just throwing it in a drawer and ignoring it
Which they actually did last year.

The mother of a good friend of mine for years took in foster kids of all ages, particularly focusing on older kids.
She passed a few years back, but all of those kids were incredibly thankful for their “mawmaw” and still talk about her fondly today. Most are doing pretty well for themselves.
These children are NOT lost causes.

Anyone who doesn’t think the future of democracy is on the line in Ukraine as much as it is here at home isn’t paying any attention to what’s actually going on. Putin doesn’t care about Nazis, or homosexuals; he cares about getting rid of neighbors who don’t kowtow to his wishes, or elect autocratic tyrants who turn their countries into Russian puppet states. What we do there is just as important as what we do here to defend the sanctity of our own democracy.

Trump, who is obese by any objective measure (not the Naughton mirror universe view)?
I would wager he’s in morbidly obese territory rather than just obese.
Probably not dishwasher safe.

Hate to link to the Bird Site, but the Project Veritas / O’Keefe situation is BLOWING UP.
The response from the Veritas board brings the receipts. O’Keefe, as arrogant right-wingers tend to do, came to regard all the donor money as “his” (kinda like Trump), and that could be looted and put into his own luxurious living.
The CFO doing the books must’ve questioned all the $$ going to chartered jets, dance parties, DJ equipment, limo rides, etc.
Sooo … James O’Keefe was corruptly looting donor money for
-$14,000 on a charter flight to meet someone to fix his boat under the guise of meeting with a donor
-$60,000 in losses by putting together dance events such as Project Veritas Experience
1/https://t.co/on51Y4ROML— Slava Ukraine 🇺🇦 (@MutatedReality) February 21, 2023
Whereupon O’Keefe fired the accountant who was tracking all the money he was stealing.
4/ reading between the lines, what appears to have happened was that the CFO caught wind of O’Keefe looting donor money for high-on-the-hog living
CFO fired. Who then blows whistle to donors.

Actually I figured that the “air raid sirens” were a stunt otherwise the Secret Service would have gotten their boss the hell out of Dodge when they started to sound. The news reported that Kherson got missiled yeaterday in retaliation.
We’ll probably never know just how much US air power was flying cabrank ovals on the Polish side of the border while President Biden was in Kyiv, but it would be fun to find out. A complete air-dominance strike package for sure, a bunch of OV-22s for extraction, stealth Blackhawks, maybe even an Aurora.
