Oh I will never forget what you did to Social Security when you put your stooge in to run it, Tangsnorter.

Your stooge Raggedy Andy Saul shut down teleworking, allowed staffing to deteriorate, harassed disability examiners and judges to deny benefits, rigged a contract bidding to give control of the 800# to Verizon which has completely failed to live up to the contract specifications. Oh and Raggedy Andy was rather late imposing controls on the spread of the coronavirus.

From downstairs in response to a Pie Overlord post:

Good Shabbas? All the kids and grandkids are OK?

I’m going to a dear friends 50th birthday party tomorrow. He runs a business here in Austin called The Soup Peddler. He started out making soup for folks in the neighborhood, putting it in two quart containers and putting it in ice-cooled containers you left on your porch. He literally delivered it by bicycle. With a dog riding shotgun.

And he wrote a book:

amazon.com

We are, of course, characters in the book. All of the original customers are. The Solstice Party scene is actually pretty close to factual.

It is now a City-wide business with pick-up locations all over town. And he still delivers (in trucks).

Do I understand correctly that women won’t have sex with men (because they won’t be able to get birth control or abortions) unless the government agrees to help support their children? Somehow this doesn’t sound like individual freedom and self sufficiency.

Another reason why I’ve not gotten a Mastodon account is that the instances with all the cool kids won’t let me in.

This is problematic because one cannot (AFAIK) communicate with a Mastodon user on another instance unless that user is already following you.

That’s a brick wall.

So if I sign up on some instance that has been set up for a special topic (like AI images), likely I will never be able to message someone on another server.

The Fediverse is all about everyone having their own little village.

It’s a kind of provincialism, I feel.

Should brands be getting involved?

Unless Mastodon makes major changes to the way the site operates, it’s probably not worth brands experimenting on the platform, especially when there are other social networks where people are more likely to engage with brands.

You ever hear the one about the guy with the three inch penis?

I’d be willing to bet any amount of money that Trump has never actually pleased a woman in bed. That’s not his thing.

We loved this rug but it didn’t fit the room. It was made 65 years ago. Hand knotted, Turkish.

Here’s a silk - came in about 100K over my budget. Merle loved it. Freaked me the fuck out when he jumped on it and started marking it.

And this rug was still over budget by about 30K, but gorgeous. Look at it from two angles. Green and lush as fuck…then vibrantly pale.

Yes. Same fucking rug. Amazeballs.

Also, this “Freedom City” shit is not a new thing. From 10 years ago:

This week saw not one but two announcements about the development of intentional living communities dedicated to the principles of libertarianism: one from Glenn Beck (Independence, USA, a “city-theme park hybrid” that will marry “media, live events, small business stores, educational projects, charity, entertainment, news, information, and technology R&D”) and the other from a group of like-minded citizens looking to build a rifleman’s paradise in the mountains of Idaho (The Citadel, which boasts “No credit check. No background check. Zero down payment. Zero interest. Zero property taxes.”).

And will suffer the same fate as Colorado Springs…and South Gate, California when the Libertarians had a working coalition majority with the sole Republican on the City Council in the early 80s…and the major employers GM & Firestone shut down their plants in response…

On further reflection, Turd’s statement is so stupid I actually can’t wrap my mind around it. Does he think there will be a huge influx of trans and wiccan pilots once the new admin takes over? Does he think there is some kind of communard lobbying movement to get the standards waived for them? They aren’t barred now so where does he think they will come from? And why does he think such pilots are automatically less competent? Have they caused a lot of crashes? He must think so, since he takes it for granted that they don’t “know how to prevent a plane from crashing.”
The notion that whole groups of people (blacks, women etc.) are inherently unable to fly has a remarkably consistent history of being wrong.

We had a dear Armenian friend who’s business was importing Oriental rugs from Turkey, Iran, Armenia, etc. She said that “at home”, every so often they would take the rugs outside, throw them upside down and let them be driven on to knock the dirt loose, so that could beat it out of them. Then throw them back onto the floor for another year. She said they were Tough.

They are tough. You can take them out in the driveway, work in some Dawn dishwashing liquid in water with a push broom, rinse them with the hose and hang them to dry. The last part is the most difficult. Traditionally they are apparently nailed up on the side of the house, but fortunately there are places that will do all that for you without you having to put nail holes in your house.
Sadly I don’t have any, but my brother does. I’m suitably jealous, but not quite jealous enough to have a hardwood floor put in so I can put a rug on it.

Applicants to the Citadel will be required to sign a “Patriot Agreement,” which provides that they must pass annual marksmanship tests with handguns and rifles (starting at age 13 for anyone raised within), will own and maintain an AR15 with at least 1,000 rounds of ammunition, and will always be visibly armed with a handgun whenever they are in public.[18]

Which would be the local government regulations requiring citizens to buy products from a private company. Seems a far stretch to think of as fitting a Libertarian philosophy, not to mention a big conflict of interest. It would make the people running the town wealthier with captive demand for their product.

And I owe my soul to the company store

Those rugs are all beautiful. Especially the silk one.

Aren’t they, though? I wish I could justify paying for a silk rug, but the wool rug we got is still beautiful - 350 double knots per square inch…took two years to make…by hand. It’ll last the rest of our lives at least.

Confronting the evolution and expansion of anti-vaccine activism in the USA in the COVID-19 era (The Lancet, full article, March 2, 2023)

Over the past two decades, anti-vaccine activism in the USA has evolved from a fringe subculture into an increasingly well organised, networked movement with important repercussions for public health. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated this evolution and magnified the reach of vaccine misinformation. Anti-vaccine activists, who for many years spoke primarily to niche communities hesitant about childhood vaccinations, have used traditional and social media to amplify vaccine-related mistruths about COVID-19 vaccines while also targeting historically marginalised racial and ethnic communities. These efforts contributed to COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy and expanded the movement, with early indications suggesting that this hesitancy could now also be increasing hesitancy that existed pre-pandemic towards other vaccines. It is important to understand the implications of this recent evolution of anti-vaccine activism on vaccination uptake and the promotion of sound public health strategies. In this Viewpoint, we summarise the latest developments in US-based anti-vaccine activism and propose strategies for confronting them.

So RootsTech 2023 is going on - it’s freebie, just sign up familysearch.org - and there is a tool to find your relatives who are there (or watching online.)

Turns out I have a bunch of 3rd cousins there.

I don’t know about any third cousins in my family, but I do know all my first cousins, first cousins once-removed, first cousins twice-removed, and second cousins personally.

They know me too, which is why they don’t associate with me (except my eldest first cousin, her children, and her grandchildren).

It does help that I have a very small family, and that everyone on my father’s side is long-deceased.

Without an account there, they have some limits. For example, you cannot look up information on living people. They have a metric fuquetonne on dead people though, such as my father and his family. (Probably way too much, since you could use that to find the information on the living people in my family on my mother’s side.)

FamilySearch accounts are free.

I have mostly used Ancestry (for my US research), but FamilySearch has its uses.

But the sad thing is the unified Family Tree. Newbies keep screwing it up, usually by merging people they should not.

Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Mar 5, 2023 • 12:20:45am

re: #75 retired cynic

Or you can keep your tree private.

Oh, there are privately owned trees on FamilySearch.

But their one tree, aka the Big Tree, is a compilation of whatever people want to add.

And I have several ancestors who continually get messed up because newbies always merge their parents with some other people.

A classic newbie mistake: they find an identical name so think two people are the same person.

Example, my ancestor “John” who was born in Scotland. He was a McArthur. He married a Margaret.

Problem is, half the men are named John in that country and about half the women are name Margaret. Just because you find a marriage between a John and Margaret does not mean that is your John and Margaret.

It’s a classic research problem and it always trips up the newbies.

Americans in particular are very bad at geography but if one is going to do genealogy one has to be familiar with where your ancestors lived.

That is the first step to knowing if those people you thought were your ancestors really could be your ancestors.

So the newbie merges people with identical names… not checking whether the locations and dates are correct.

The more I think about Mastodon the less I like it.

It’s really not a social network, if by “social” we mean society.

It strikes me more like Christianity, or aptly Churchianity, where like minded people gather in their little groups. Christianity has ended up with thousand upon thousands of instances, er, denominations.

Some websites keep touting (or is that tooting) that if you don’t like your instance you can move your username to another instance.

Sure, but then your prior posts are gone, vanished.

This erasing of history I find more troubling, because it is a symptom of our society where nothing in the past really matters.

Indeed, and ironic, that the CPACers whining about “CRT” are really whining about people knowing history, interpreting history, wrestling with the past.

It will be interesting, as time goes on, to see if Mastodon really makes a difference or if it will be just another Discord, where each little clique finds its own environment.

We humans form clubs because we are social animals.

And that is why so-called social media exists - because we are looking for groups in which to hang our hat.

I suspect it will be typical that a Mastodon instance has a half-life of but a few years. Already people are reporting instances that have disappeared.

Flocking to Mastodon: Tracking the Great Twitter Migration :

The acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk has spurred controversy and uncertainty among Twitter users. The move raised as many praises as concerns, particularly regarding Musk’s views on free speech. As a result, a large number of Twitter users have looked for alternatives to Twitter. Mastodon, a decentralized micro-blogging social network, has attracted the attention of many users and the general media. In this paper, we track and analyze the migration of 136,009 users from Twitter to Mastodon. Our analysis sheds light on the user-driven pressure towards centralization in a decentralized ecosystem and identifies the strong influence of the social network in platform migration. We also characterize the activity of migrated users on both Twitter and Mastodon.

Top Putin ally Ramzan Kadyrov ‘seriously ill from suspected poisoning’

Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov - a close ally of Vladimir Putin - is reported to be seriously ill with kidney problems amid fears of ‘poisoning’.

The fanatical pro-war zealot who has advocated using nuclear weapons against Ukraine is rumoured to have summoned a leading doctor from the United Arab Emirates because he ‘does not trust’ Moscow doctors.

Several opposition sources have claimed kidney illness accounted for Kadyrov’s surprising absence from Putin’s state of the nation speech on 12 February, and a recent ‘bloated’ appearance, as seen at a recent meeting in his palace in Chechen capital Grozny with Denis Pushilin, head of the invaded Donetsk People’s Republic.

The Chechen’s leader’s luxury private jet was known to have made several trips recently to the UAE, and he has been less visible than usual in recent weeks.

While Kadyrov, 46, is one of Putin’s closest allies, the Chechen strongman - reportedly a father of 14 with three current wives - has strongly attacked the running of the war, especially by the Russian defence ministry and certain generals.

Oh, hell yes. Put that thing in a trench in hull defilade and it’ll stop any infantry assault and its TOWs will kill enemy armor. An M-3 BFV is a peach of an offensive unit, when well deployed with its siblings.

As a solo vehicle to hold hard points?

No. That’s not how armor works anymore. But in a six-vehicle unit, they can be just deadly as hell.

Bezos’ SS Minnow has set sail at a staggering price tag. A boat is just a hole in the water you throw money in. I was more interested in the dismantling of the historic bridge than his penis enlargement vessel. Yes I am jelly.

dailymail.co.uk

Billionaire Jeff Bezos’ new yacht has been revealed after a five-year construction - and it will be the tallest in the world, measuring over 230ft tall.

The Executive Chairman of Amazon commissioned for the boat - called Koru - to be built in 2018 and the brand-new superyacht was constructed for a whopping $500 million.

And it seems that money is no object for Bezos as, after all, he is the third richest person on the planet with an estimated net worth of $115.4 billion.

Previously known as Y721 or Project 721, the yacht now goes by the name of Koru which means ‘new beginnings’ in Maori.

Reportedly, the megayacht is set to be delivered to Bezos within the next couple of months.

The vessel is 127 meters in length - with triple masts that reach 70 meters - making the sailing yacht nearly half the size of the Great Pyramid of Giza.

You know what else is slated to cost $500 million? The replacement of this bridge.

re: #154 Shropshire Slasher

Well, at least Bezos figured out a way to (“quietly”) get his mega-tub out to sea without having to dismantle that bridge (even I, as a thorough landlubber, knew that the masts on a sailing ship are the last things to be put on) - so bon voyage, Jeff…

from that link, I gleaned this about Koru:

The finished length of the yacht is 127 meters long or 416 feet. It is a sailing yacht so those do tend to be shorter in length.

Meanwhile, the masts on the vessel reach 70 meters or 230 feet.

It was modeled on with three enormous masts so it can be powered largely by kinetic energy from the sails.

What this extremely advanced and green technology means is that the sails can be managed by a single person rather than an entire crew.

I got the not unpleasing image of Jeff Bezos’ crew and guests mutinying, and abandoning him on his yacht: at least he would be able to sail it home all by himself….

re: #152 Eclectic Cyborg

Josh Duggar is another example of this.

The whole Josh Duggar thing makes me want to just stand up and scream until I’m hoarse outside the Duggar house in Tontitown, Arkansas. And then start again after my throat had a rest. Keep in mind that Josh is in prison because they found he possessed child pr0n on a secret Linux partition on his work laptop. *But* before that, it had come out that Josh had sexually assaulted four of his sisters and a neighbor girl. And because the Duggar family was part of Bill Gothard’s ATI, the girls were taught that they may have brought their abuse upon themselves.

I cannot even begin to imagine how completely FUCKED UP that is.

When this became known in the circle that the Duggars ran in (way before their popularity), JimBob and Michelle Duggar protected Josh, did not turn him in to authorities, and basically told the girls to keep quiet. Because Josh, as a future patriarch, was far more important than the girls. So they got him “counseling” and not the girls. (The “counseling” was with a friend who was also a sexual predator.)

So now, fast forward a couple of decades and we have Jinger Duggar Vuolo writing a book about how she was freed from her family’s cult. The problem is, she’s in another cult, the cult of John MacArthur, which y’all will remember that I picketed last year on Juneteenth. She went from a bricked in room to a straitjacket. She can move a little. And from what we know about John MacArthur, he was quite willing to protect abusive patriarchs. He excommunicated one woman because she would not return to her abusive husband. This guy is currently a lifetime guest of the California prison system and goddamnit, MacArthur has never apologized to the wife. She’s not the only one.

So my point is, that yeah, I want to stand out in front of the Duggar house and scream for the sake of the children who lived there and were abused, and to get the attention of the women today who are still being abused in their Baptist cult of personality around John MacArthur. Or other pastors, because damn if the cult of personality isn’t strong in Evangelicalism.

‘It’s sad’: Conservatives lament the collapse of CPAC since Trump came along

rawstory.com

As the 2023 CPAC gathering wraps up in Maryland, Republican activists are expressing their dismay with the turn the conservative gathering has taken and wonder if it will survive now that it has been taken over by the MAGA crowd.

With attendance down, likely due in equal parts to the sexual assault allegations levied at founder Matt Schlapp and key Republicans staying away, ABC reports that this year’s convention was more Trump-centric than any in recent memory.

However, according to one attendee, CPAC needs more Trump and fewer alternatives.

“It is a broad cross section, but that’s kind of a bad thing, you almost don’t want that,” explained Joe Walters from Westchester County, N.Y., before adding, “I wish it were more Trumpian in some sense.”

Il Duce’s next move. Stopping all “frivolous” lawsuits.

‘Wild west of litigation’: Buckle up as Florida legislature pushes sweeping changes to legal system

Shortly after a state House committee last month OK’d sweeping changes to the state’s litigation process, Speaker Paul Renner gathered a powerful array of business and insurance representatives in the Capitol’s Fourth Floor rotunda for a news conference.

They all agreed that, in making it harder to sue insurance companies, the legislation would reduce frivolous lawsuits and thereby protect businesses and everyday Floridians. At least that’s what certain GOP lawmakers and lobbyists believe.

As monumental a change to the law as the legal reforms under discussion would represent, Gov. Ron DeSantis and the Republican-led Legislature aren’t stopping there.

During the 60-day regular session that opens on Tuesday, lawmakers also will consider making it easier to sue journalists for libel and requiring bloggers who write about the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, chief financial officer, commissioner of agriculture, or legislators to register with the state and report any income their posts generate.

And it gets worse with the GOP having supermajorities in the gerrymandered legislature.

Funny, but the reason he’s seen as a cynical grifter is their marriage. People believed they were playing both sides, and there may have been terrible tension there rather than a grift.

Another possibility is that she may have had an affair after she bought that new face, the divorce could have nothing to do with politics, and they could both be cynical grifters as people suspected.

We always gave my sister grief for being clumsy. As an adult, she was finally diagnosed with a perception disorder — I don’t know the precise mechanism, but it’s a mismatch between the distance her eyes perceive and where her hands or feet actually are. She says it was a tremendous relief to know the reason, even if she still has to work consciously to overcome the discrepancy. (And now we all feel bad for razzing her, too late to do anything about it :(
