This is why I read Spin magazine.

As edited by Rolling Stone Editor-in-Chief Noah Shachtman, however, the article omitted a key fact that Siegel initially intended to include: Siegel had learned from her sources that Meek had been raided as part of a federal investigation into images of child sex abuse, something not publicly revealed until last month.

Why did Rolling Stone suggest Meek was targeted for his coverage of national security, rather than something unrelated to his journalism?

Neither Siegel nor Shachtman would comment for this story. This article is based on a review of some contemporaneous communications and also interviews with 10 people with knowledge of incidents described here, including several individuals at Rolling Stone, as well as people at ABC and federal law enforcement agencies.

Each asked not to be named because they were not authorized to disclose these matters publicly.

The FBI raided a notable journalist’s home. Rolling Stone didn’t tell readers why (NPR)

Not as serious as this, but I’m reminded of my parents being ostracized and eventually leaving a church after exposing the pastor as a crook who used church money for personal ends. When asked why they voted unanimously in favor of retaining the pastor after clear and irrefutable evidence of his crimes was presented, the board said, “Because he’s the pastor…”

Nearly 2 decades later, but I heard that the pastor was finally sent “into the mission field,” which is Evangelical code talk for, “He finally did something we couldn’t look the other way on, but we’re going to let him keep his dignity and piety.” $20 says he was sleeping with some of his buddies’ wives.

American tourist drives red Ferrari into pedestrian-only plaza in Italy, cops say

A 43-year-old tourist from the U.S. was visiting Florence on the afternoon of Monday, March 20, according to a news release from the City of Florence. The American tourist was driving a red Ferrari when he went the wrong way down a street and parked in a pedestrian-only area of the Piazza della Signoria, authorities said.

Tracking American boorishness is a thing with Italian media, not least because visiting boors give them so much rich material.

I did that in Germany in 2010 or so. Missed the small “Do Not Enter” signs and went into a pedestrian-only area in a small town. I simply missed the left turn into the parking area I was looking for. I did immediately note someone getting my attention to tell me what I’d done and got turned around without causing much of a disruption.

Hasn’t our experience with Trump been that he would release information prematurely so that when the event actually occurred it would be old news barely worth covering? Isn’t that what may be happening now so there will be far less journalistic interest when the arrest happens next week, if it ever really happens.

From the last thread, The “Harrowing of Hell” in the Baltimore Catechism (Catholic Dogma) in Medieval Times wasn’t between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection, it was Christ the Infant between His birth and His Bris.

Just look at this Medieval text from Benjamin Britenn’s Symphony of Carols:

Benjamin Britten
This Little Babe

“This little babe just three days old,
Is come to rival Satan’s hold
All hell doth at his presence quake,
though he himself for cold do shake;
For in this weak unarmored wise
the gates of hell he will surprise.

With tears he fights and wins the field,
his naked breast stands for a shield.
His battering shot are babish cries,
his arrows looks of weeping eyes.
His martial ensigns Cold and Need,
and feeble flesh his warrior’s steed.

His camp is pitched in a stall,
his bulwark but a broken wall;
The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes,
of shepherds he his muster makes.
And thus as sure his foe to wound,
the angels’ trumps alarum sound

My soul with Christ
join thou in fight;
stick to the tents
that he hath pight.
Within his crib
is surest ward;
this little Babe
will by thy guard.

If thou wilt foil thy
foes with joy, then
flit not from this
heavenly boy!”

Also, listen to the piece. A brilliant choral piece:

Britten’s “This Little Babe” with Lyrics

How did he get such a minimal sentence in the first place? That’s ridiculous. Were these reduced charges in exchange for sparing the girls from testifying? I know that it can be traumatic for women, let alone children, to testify against those who assaulted them

According to this report, speculation was that they were concerned about the girls, and the prosecutor made a mistake:

They are protesting on the bridge between Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. That’s where they usually hold their rallies (they are seen better there by everyone who enters or leaves the island). They are nowhere near Mar-a-Grifto.

The Palm Beach PD do not fuck around.

There are two bridges to Palm Beach proper. Suspect the protests are held on the south bridge as it’s closer to M-a-L.

That nub that sticks out into the Pacific is Cape Mendocino. It’s the western-most point of land in the continental US. You can drive a narrow, twisty road from highway 101 right to it where there is a beach that runs north and south for a couple miles. What is unique about the cape is that, a couple of miles offshore there is a triple junction where 3 geological plates meet: the Gorda, the Pacific, and the North American. This means it is a prime location for earthquakes and is why Ferndale gets rocked frequently. I’ve stood on that beach and wondered what might happen if a big quake were to happen at that instant. You can’t help but feel very exposed and very vulnerable there in that wind-blown, desolate place.

So I had to go to my old message list on my Mac Mail program to see what email address I used for dpreview… found it… then had to reset the password on Yahoo for that email because I’ve not checked the email for a month or so and Yahoo keeps thinking someone has tried too many failed logins… then once that is done I go to dpreview and request a password change… got that email and clicked on it and finally I can read my old posts on dpreview.

4482 forum entries from 2003 to 1 January 2012, though that is my only post in 2012, and only 2 posts in 2011. So 4479 posts through 2010.

I used to post there a lot.

When I started the old Canon vs. Nikon thing was raging intently.

I guess we all expected that once cameras could take pictures that the market for digicams would collapse.

Now so much that I guess Amazon thinks it is not worth keeping dpreview alive.

Sad, but all things change.

I’m still of the mindset that we are living in what future centuries will call a “dark age”, because after a couple of generations of nearly all aspects of life being stored on easily erased digital assets, once our societies go through crises and mini-collapses, there will be a century or so of missing information.

I really do believe that by the year 2200 that physical records on paper will re-emerge as how societies keep track of themselves.

I did that in Sevilla when I was stationed in Spain. I misread a sign and took a left turn in my Nissan onto a pedestrian stairway down to a main street.

Fortunately there weren’t any pedestrians and the steps were shallow and wide. I was really embarrassed by the time I got to the bottom.

‘I hate being factually wrong’: Tucker Carlson owns up to spreading fake ‘dead voters’ story

alternet.org

Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson poured his heart out over his leaked text messages trashing former President Donald Trump and his lies about the 2020 election during a call-in to Tuesday’s edition of Bo Snerdly’s Rush Hour.

“Tucker, listen, I’ve had a number of people saying they read all these things in the paper — ‘you hate Trump blah, blah, blah.’ But this it - does Tucker like Trump’s policies, any policies of his? What’s the deal with you and Donald Trump?” host Bo Snerdly queried.

Well, that right there, right there - I hate being factually wrong. I mean, I’ve got a lot of opinions that you may think are stupid and maybe they are stupid and maybe I changed them at some point and I’m always transparent about that. If, you know, the facts change, my opinion changes. I think that’s the way you’re supposed to live. But I can’t stand getting the facts wrong. That’s just - there’s no excuse for that. And we got it wrong. And by the way, yes we should have, I should have, I should have checked to see if those voters were actually dead. And I didn’t. And I took this staffer’s word for it and now that I’m saying it out loud, I mean, that’s my fault. At the time, I was blaming the Trump campaign. And I was, I was livid. Buhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhhuh. I don’t miss it.

Deadly fungal infection rapidly spreading in U.S. health facilities

A deadly and highly-drug resistant fungus is spreading at “an alarming rate” in long-term care hospitals and other health facilities caring for very sick people, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Monday.

Fungal infections from the yeast strain known as Candida auris tripled nationally from 476 in 2019 to 1,471 in 2021, according to CDC data. Cases where a person carries the fungus but is not infected nearly quadrupled from 1,077 to 4,040 in the same time period. Preliminary data suggests the numbers have continued to rise.

re: #147 jaunte

It’s tempting to imagine him overwhelmed, until you remember sociopaths don’t experience anxiety.

Web MD says differently, and I like to think he’s entirely freaking out.

People often confuse the terms sociopath and psychopath and use them interchangeably. They aren’t different in the clinical sense. Both terms refer to people who have antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Those with ASPD have no regard for others’ rights or feelings, lack empathy and remorse for wrongdoings, and have the need to exploit and manipulate others for personal gain.

Nature and nurture play a role in ASPD. The reasons behind the disorder are not fully understood. The current belief is that psychopathy generally comes from genetic factors, such as parts of the brain not developing fully, while sociopathy results from an interruption in personality development by abuse or trauma in childhood. People often think that those with antisocial personality disorders are always criminals and are easy to spot, but many are unaware of the disorder and may never be diagnosed.

Sociopaths have less consistent behavior than psychopaths. Psychopaths are more controlled and charming. Their manipulation is more detached, and they plan ahead. Sociopaths experience anxiety and find rage far harder to control. They may act without thought and, as a result, they may have a harder time blending in. Inconsistencies between their words and their lives may be easier to see.

Sometimes. But usually no around here. The ski areas lease the land from the Forest Service and they dictate when they can operate, a lot of times they have to close at a set date because of things like elk migration.

One of these anti-pornography bills was passed into law in 2021 in Utah but cannot go into effect unless five additional states pass similar laws — a provision included to prevent Big Tech companies from isolating the state after passing the law. This year, Florida, South Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Iowa, Idaho, Texas and Montana lawmakers are all considering versions of the bill, with Montana and Idaho’s versions being furthest along in the process.

It’s that time of year, end of winter, beginning of spring, and if we have a large storm at this time there are on occasion tornados.

Rare, though.

Our first major rain band just went through - we’ve had about half an inch of rain over the last hour or so, a lot for us.

Getting back to dpreview: what pops into mind is this simple question: if Amazon did not want it anymore why didn’t they sell it?

Now, granted, hobbyist media is not greatly valuable, but dpreview has a huge back-catalog of product information and reviews.

Certainly some media conglomerate would pay something for the intellectual property.

But Amazon is just shuttering it.

My suspicion is that this is just more evidence of corporate America trying to erase memory.

Sort of like how Youtube no longer allows you to sort videos so you can see the oldest first.

In the case of Youtube it has been suggested that they are doing this because they want to hide the past from potential advertisers.

In the case of Amazon I suspect they just don’t want independent, third party evaluation of items from companies which use Amazon to push a lot of product.

Somebody wants the Bible removed from Davis County school libraries (Yahoo!, March 20, 2023)

Someone wants the Bible removed from libraries in the Davis School District.

On Dec. 11, 2022, a challenge was filed with district officials asking that the Bible be pulled from the shelves of the district’s schools.

The school district doesn’t reveal who challenges books, nor does it ask why.

Asked if it was a serious attempt to have the Bible removed from school libraries or if it was a political statement, Christopher Williams, Davis School District’s director of communication, said they treat all challenges the same.

“The district doesn’t judge one challenge versus another,” he said in an email response. “We view it as part of the work we do.”

So we were raised Byzantine Rite Roman Catholic, an odd offspring found in parts of the old Hapsburg Empire in which the Orthodox Catholics were allowed to continue to use Old Church Slavonic rites as long as they recognized the Pope.

In any case, when my middle sister married a Lutheran, she got a long letter from my oldest sister about abandoning the True Faith.

Oldest sister later went on to become a Mormon.

Here’s what they mean by ‘Freedom’: Event promotes bill to jail docs who use vaccines | Opinion (Bryan Clark, Idaho Statesman, March 20, 2023)

That would be any vaccine using mRNA technology (meaning Covid-19 vaccines).

“I thought we believed in a patient-doctor relationship. So why is the government stepping in and telling these doctors that they can’t do that (administer drugs they believe are effective) to their patients?” asked Sen. Tammy Nichols at the Idaho Freedom Foundation’s “Capitol Clarity” event on Thursday.

That’s a decent argument. It just sounds a little strange coming from the mouth of a lawmaker who is in the midst of promoting a bill that would jail doctors, nurses and pharmacists who administer most brands of COVID-19 vaccines.

But Nichols was talking about ivermectin, an anti-parasite medication that has repeatedly shown no efficacy in treating COVID-19, not vaccines, which have demonstrated a high degree of efficacy in preventing severe disease and death.

Along with cosponsor Rep. Judy Boyle, R-Midvale, Nichols was promoting House Bill 307. The bill and its predecessor have both been printed by the House Health and Welfare Committee, but neither has been granted a hearing. The purpose of the Freedom Foundation’s Capitol Clarity event was to try to get supporters to contact their lawmakers and get it moving.

With the bill, Nichols and Boyle are seeking to place the government — the police specifically — right in the middle of the doctor-patient relationship. The bill would make it a misdemeanor to administer vaccines that use mRNA technology, like the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, punishable by up to a year in jail.

Saudi Arabia announced that Ramadan begins on April 23, which is the same day as International Atheist Day.

For Ramadan the cycle of fasting and prayer begins for Muslims. For Atheist Day, atheists will display (or put in the palm of their hand or other hidden spot which can be displayed) a green circle to show a person it is safe to be with them or speak to them. Green circles will also appear in social media avatars.

The origins of Atheist Day can be traced back to a spoof story that was published on the internet in 2003. Atheist Day was originally about a fictional case of an Atheist who had decided to sue the government. The reason for the fictional lawsuit was a simple one—unlike all the major religions, there was no day for Atheists, to which the judge said that April 1st (i.e. April Fool’s Day) was their holiday. While this case was just a hoax, the story spread quickly and was actually accepted as fact [by Christians].

I was in Tokyo a few years back on Constitution Day. The back streets around Ueno were lined with police riot buses (armoured bumpers, grills over the windows etc.) and a lot of no-more-mister-nice-guy police patrolling rather than the usual one or two uniformed types you see standing outside the kobans or going around issuing bicycle parking tickets. I presume they were prepared for the right-wing nutters getting out of hand and intending to stomp hard if push came to shove.

The bill’s text, prohibiting nearly all genital surgery of any kind, (except circumcision). Interestingly it almost correctly defines gender identity, which it bans if it doesn’t agree with their Christian view of gender.

HB 4754—Relating to health benefit plan coverage for and prohibitions on gender transitioning procedures and treatments provided to certain individuals; creating a criminal offense. (Texas Legislature Website. Bill filed March 10, 2023)

The bill uses the same formula as their anti-abortion law in that anyone can sue on behalf of the state guardians of children, physicians, nurses, hospitals, or pharmacies, and be paid out if they win.

Ukrainian Refugees in Israel Stuck in Legal Limbo

TL;DR, Israel does not recognise Ukrainians as refugees unless they are Jewish. Non-Jewish refugees are granted tourist visas, which does not allow them to work or receive benefits.

Non-recognised refugees are also exploited by unscrupulous businesses for employment (much the same as the USA).

All that snowpack has to melt slowly - if you get rains on top of that snow, you’ll get massive runoff that can result in major flooding even with the dam systems in place, and get into an Oroville Dam situation, where the spillways aren’t able to handle the flows and major damage can occur.

Given the unpredictable nature of the weather and warmer than normal temps we’ve been seeing overall, it’s a very risky proposition.

In other news of Luddite technology, our telephone company reduced our Internet service bill from $130 a month for alleged 10Mbit “high speed” Internet (plus $45 a month rental fee for a modem) to $40 a month for Internet service (they did not drop the modem rental fee).

Telephone service on the other hand has been raised to $52/month. Paper billing now costs $5 per month, and the telephone company wants to charge to accept a cheque for billing. The state is going after them since most people outside cities have no access to such things as cell phone service for billing or electronic payment services through banks.

We didn’t get a song, but we did get an article with photographs.

The Great Flood of 2011 (Nebraska Life Magazine, May/June, 2012)

TORRENTIAL RAINS in the upper Missouri River Basin in May 2011 stressed all five main stream dams upriver of Yankton’s Gavins Point, leaving the hydroelectric structure that backs up Lewis and Clark Lake as the last line of defense against downstream deluges.

Public outcry and political pressure following major floods in the 1940s led to the creation of the dam network. The dams: Fort Peck near Glasgow, Mont., Garrison in central North Dakota, and Oahe, Big Bend, Fort Randall, and Gavins Point, all in South Dakota, were installed as flood controls as authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1944. Other benefits of the project include improved navigation, hydroelectric generation, recreational opportunities and irrigation. There are 15 dams in total on the Missouri, and nearly 100 more on its tributaries. The unforgiving Missouri River, as if offended by the attempted taming of its flows, has been rising up ever since.

Historic floods raged in 1881, 1943 and 1952. Gavins Point Dam was completed in 1957, and the rest of the upstream dams were all finished by the early 1960s. Still, heavy floods took their toll along the Missouri River in Nebraska in 1967, 1978 and 1993, with lesser, more localized floods occurring even more often. From its beginnings in the mountains of Montana, to where it joins the Mississippi north of St. Louis 2,341 miles later, the Missouri River brings life to the river valley. And on occasion, it dramatically changes the valley.

Up and down the Missouri River, the 2011 flooding caused more than $2 billion in damages, including 4,000 flooded homes, and resulted in five deaths. In Nebraska, water flowed across Highway 2 at Nebraska City all summer long. Three miles of Interstate 680 between Omaha and Interstate 29 near Council Bluffs, Iowa, was destroyed. And from Montana to Nebraska, $514 million worth of repairs are being made to U.S. Army Corps of Engineers levees, dams and other floodcontrol [sic] structures. By the time everything is cleaned up in 2012, the total cost to Eppley Airfield will top $22 million.

Eppley Airfield is the official name of Omaha’s commercial airport. Not detailed in the article was all the damage to Offutt Air Force Base, which necessitated moving Air Force aircraft to Lincoln’s public airport for years until all the runways and taxiways could be repaired.

More from Voice of America:

Washington —

Western experts analyzing North Korea’s latest intercontinental ballistic missile tests are watching to see whether Pyongyang will follow up by firing an ICBM into the Pacific Ocean on a flat trajectory more like a real attack on the United States.

Such a test would be intended to demonstrate North Korea’s ability to reach the mainland United States with a nuclear weapon as well as to gauge whether the Biden administration would try to intercept it, the experts told VOA’s Korean service.

North Korea said it launched a Hwasong-17 ICBM on March 16 to “give a stronger warning” to the U.S. and South Korea, saying those nations were escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula with large-scale military drills. The allies were three days into their 11-day Freedom Shield live exercises that Pyongyang views as a rehearsal for an invasion.

The Hwasong-17 was fired into space on a trajectory that sent it to over 6,000 kilometers in altitude and about 1,000 kilometers in distance before it splashed into the waters off North Korea’s eastern coast, according to state media.

Or in central valley California, where the levees keep the irrigation canal from flooding the area. E.G. in the Natomas basin there’s a large residential/office park /industrial presence in an area where some places are actually below sea level & three giant pumps keep the area free of water.

IF the levees break near there, the pumps will not be able to keep up. I recall the year I had to develop a flood plan for the Deaf Relay Call center that used to be there. We actually had a rotating shift of call center supervisors driving the levee roads to give us forewarning, but got lucky in that the levee held that year.

Speaking of drought and flood control on the Missouri River, Lake McConaughy (the impoundment of the North Platte River east of me) is up to 50.8% of capacity, up eighteen inches from last week.

Mastodon

Unfortunately for us in the lee of the Rocky Mountains, the rain from all the atmospheric rivers hitting California don’t make it to us. Our rain and snow comes from tropical air pushing north from the Gulf of Mexico, which hasn’t really happened since the blizzard on Christmas Eve. (We still have snow from that here despite many days in the sixties.)

The upcoming week looks promising though with snow every day and night from Wednesday through Sunday (despite temperatures in the fifties, it will snow and even collect on the ground).

After 81 years, a Virginia military base sheds its Confederate name

BLACKSTONE, Va. — Pickett.

For as long as anyone here can remember, that is how the sprawling military base neighboring this tidy little town in southern Virginia has been known.

Named for Confederate General George Pickett, it was first established as Camp Pickett when the Army built it as a combat training ground soon after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Then, in 1974, the then nearly 45,000-acre facility was renamed Fort Pickett.

But the Pickett era ends Friday when the name will come down as part of a sweeping congressional order to the Defense Department to remove Confederate names from its installations and assets. Pickett, which has been operated by the Virginia National Guard since 1997, will be renamed Fort Barfoot after Col. Van T. Barfoot, a World War II Medal of Honor recipient who lived in nearby Amelia.

While this part of Virginia is steeped in Confederate history and a statue of a Confederate soldier stands in front of the county courthouse a few miles away, the decision to rename the base wasn’t met with a flurry of protests or upset residents demanding the old name be kept. If anything, the decision has been greeted by many locals with little more than a shrug.

The article notes the local people don’t care what the base is called, as long as it stays open ($$$).

“We country bumpkins down here didn’t come up with the name,” Billy Coleburn, the owner of the local newspaper, the Courier Record, and a former mayor of the town, said in an interview at his office here last week. “The War Department picked the land and the name and the day of the dedication.”

The Army dedicated Camp Pickett on July 3, 1942, 79 years to the day after Pickett’s costly loss at Gettysburg. A number of his descendants planned to be there for the ceremony, according to coverage in the local paper.

In the first half of the 20th century, naming military installations in the South for Confederate leaders was part of the Lost Cause effort, said Ty Seidule, a U.S. Military Academy historian and retired U.S. Army brigadier general, referencing efforts by leading Southerners to cast the Confederacy as noble and principled rather than a rebellion from the North in an attempt to hold on to slavery. In addition to Fort Pickett, two other Virginia military bases named for Confederates, Fort Lee and Fort A.P. Hill, were ordered by the military to change their names this year.

Ed Sheeran has alerted fans that his upcoming album, “Subtract,” will overflow with feelings.

In his April cover story interview with Rolling Stone, the British hitmaker details the incidents that contributed to his heightened emotional state last year - the sudden death of his best friend and his wife’s tumor diagnosis among them - and how, at 32, he’s become a domesticated family man.

Sheeran admits to plunging into depression following the February 2022 loss of his closest pal, Jamal Edwards, a music entrepreneur who died of cardiac arrhythmia instigated by cocaine use.

Coupled with the discovery that his then-pregnant wife Cherry Seaborn had developed a tumor that couldn’t be removed until giving birth (she underwent successful surgery after delivering second daughter Jupiter last May) and the death of another friend, Australian cricket star Shane Warne, Sheeran felt himself spiraling.

Ketamine Wellness Centers promised a “life-changing” method to treat suicidal ideation, depression and PTSD. But its abrupt closure last week has left mental-health patients in Arizona and eight other states without access to drugs or therapy.

One of the nation’s largest chains of ketamine clinics, which started in Phoenix, ceased operating with no advance notice to patients, deadbolting its offices, posting a note on its website, and sending an email.

The company provided scant advice to patients who are in the middle of drug infusion treatment about how to handle being cut off. It also did not provide any information about how to recover hundreds or thousands of dollars in prepaid costs.

The most common type of mass shooting in the US rarely achieves big headlines or coverage, because it’s just another husband/dad slaughtering his family, nothing to see there right?

I recall a Doonesbury strip from decades ago: Uncle Duke is testifying in Congress against gun control. One Senator mentions that domestic violence is the biggest cause of gun deaths, to which Duke replies “Well, that’s just my point, Senator: if you wife were shooting at you, wouldn’t you want to be in a position to return fire?”

(Remember, the GOP is fine with arming children.)

Trump shovelling bulkshyte:

“Prosecutors only attack lawyers when they have no case whatsoever,” the Trump campaign statement said, arguing that an ABC News report and other anonymously sourced stories about the still-sealed decision are based on illegal disclosures. “These leaks are happening because there is no factual or legal basis or substance to any case against President Trump.”

For those in the back: Prosecutors attack lawyers when the prosecutors believe lawyers are covering up crime and have evidence to support the assertion.

That makes sense. Sometimes they will dress in Imperial Army of Japan uniforms and parade in predominantly Korean neighborhoods.

Want to ignore any law whatsoever? Claim you have a “sincerely held religious belief” that prevents you from obeying that law, and you get a free pass! Want to shoot your neighbor? Want to rape his wife? Want to burn your entire city to the ground in a fit of pique because a gay person once looked at you the wrong way? Go for it! Just claim you did it in Jesus’s name and that your religion doesn’t require you to abide by the rules of civil society, and you, too, can be a de facto anarchist!

Until 2022, Nebraska had no exemptions for vaccines for school except legitimate medical exemptions (no religious bullshyte).

Unfortunately, as part of the successful effort by billionaire Man-of-the-People Gov. Pete Ricketts, we now have a religious exemption specifically for Covid-19 vaccines signed into law in 2022.

The Unicameral is only a couple senators from becoming a fascist legislature. Democrats have to pick their battles here, and if conservatives want to die from a vaccine-preventable disease because politics or Christianity tells them they should, Democrats aren’t going to stand in their way (in fact, they will stand far away).

Gov. Ricketts Signs Coronavirus Vaccine Exemption Legislation (Nebraska Health and Human Services, February 28, 2022)

Several Democrats in the Unicameral were censured when they said “you’re free to kill your voters.”

“Weakening the Armed Forces.”

Is “woke” in the room with them now? Are the Armed Forces instructing military personnel to be less lethal in their actions on a battlefield or the sea? Does a Howitzer or Naval artillery become less accurate based on gender identity or awareness of racism?

Former Florida state Rep. Joseph Harding (R) could be going to prison for a long time after he pled guilty to committing fraud to get $150,000 of COVID-19 relief funds.

Harding is perhaps best known as the author of Florida’s infamous Don’t Say Gay bill, which banned discussions of sexual orientation and gender identity in younger grades and restricted them in older grades. LGBTQ+ advocates said that the law would effectively ban discussions of LGBTQ+ people, force teachers into the closet, and cut LGBTQ+ students off from much-needed support outside of their homes. Supporters of the bill said that anyone who opposed it was a pedophile.

‘It’s the Antichrist’: Mike Lindell warns AI will take ‘control’ if voting machines are not destroyed

We’re at this apex in history now,” the pillow executive opined. “If we don’t get rid of these electronic voting machines, if we don’t get rid of the machines and get back to having elections and not selections, we have to elect the people that are going to regulate this artificial intelligence.”

“We’re going have artificial intelligence regardless,” he continued. “But you better have the right people regulating it. You could frame people for anything. You could do anything with that, and we’re going to just be controlled.”

“And you’re right!” Lindell agreed. “It’s like the Antichrist, but that’s why it’s so important what we’re doing right now to get elections back instead of selections because the people you’re going to be regulating something that’s so powerful that something man has never seen.”

Jack Daniel’s tells Supreme Court its brand is harmed by dog toy Bad Spaniels

Jack Daniel’s, the famous Tennessee whiskey company, is trying to stop production and marketing of a chewy dog toy called Bad Spaniels. The toy, shaped and decorated like a Jack Daniel’s bottle, features a spaniel and the name “Bad Spaniels” on the label instead of the iconic Jack Daniel’s name. And instead of promising 40% alcohol by volume, it promises “43% poo by volume, 100% smelly.”

As it argues in its brief: “Jack Daniel’s loves dogs and appreciates a good joke as much as anyone. But Jack Daniel’s likes its customers even more, and doesn’t want them confused or associating its fine whiskey with dog poop.”

VIP’s brief comes back with a terse reply: “Freedom of speech begins with freedom to mock.”

Jack Daniel’s “misses the point” when it equates the Bad Spaniels toy with knock offs like marijuana-laced Oreos marketed as “Stoneos,” says VIP’s lawyer Bennett Evan Cooper. “There is no bottle of dog food being sold. It’s a pretend trademark on a pretend label for a pretend bottle full of pretend content. The entire thing is a parody.”

re: #408 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

It’s get it if the doggy chew toy actually looked like a bottle of Jack. It doesn’t. I compared the two together. It’s total parody.

That is a legitimate argument. But that isn’t the standard the 9th Circuit used, which, if allowed to stand, effectively makes trademarks unenforceable.

I’m very much in favor of restricting IP rights as much as possible. I come from the Richard Stallman branch of copyleft libertarianism. But that seems overly broad, even to me. Trademarks are valuable to ensure that brands are readily identifiable, part of a “truth in advertising” consumer protection enforcement scheme.

Exactly the point made in the article I linked to.

re: #315 Colère Tueur de Lapin

As many people keep noting, SS and Medicare are not part of the general fund and do not contribute to the debt. They are both holders of the debt because politicians keep borrowing from those funds.

Now get some interviewer to follow up with that….

Millions of stubborn, stupid people who just can’t be told the truth, or they get extremely upset.

Faint glimmer of hope

there were a couple of bad polls for Fox this week. The first, from Quinnipiac, reports that nearly all Democrats, but also 40% of Republicans, want the network to pay the price for its lies about the 2020 election. The second, commissioned by Variety, says that roughly half of Fox voters are unaware of the Dominion lawsuit, but among the half who are familiar with the story, nearly half trust the network less. That means that overall, about 21% of Fox viewers have a less favorable view of the network than they did before the 2020 election.

re: #356 The Pie Overlord!

Hitler only banned guns for certain people, not for everyone. Sort of like how a white person with a gun gets a pass whereas a person of color with a gun gets shot to death.
