Saturday Science: How Much of the Universe Can Humanity Ever See?

Science • Views: 13,423

YouTube

There’s an absolute limit to our access to the universe beyond our own galaxy. There’s a limit to what we can ever hope to explore or send signals to, and a very different limit to what we can ever hope to witness. Today we’re going to explore the latter. We’re going to figure out the absolute limit of our future view of the universe, and of the universe’s ability to influence us. Next time we’ll turn it around and ask: how much of the external universe can WE potentially influence, and even explore?

Sir Terry Pratchett explains the reasoning behind the question in

The Truth

A lie can travel halfway around the world before truth can tie it’s shoes. A well known quote.

But did you know that the dwarves can turn lead into gold? A movable type (with the letter made from lead) create the first newspaper that runs everysiee of an argument to make everyone happy and rakes in the cash.

Confrontation made money by getting eyes and clicks — but you knew that tidbit.

Alex Jones blew InfoWars fortune on cyrogenic freezing and guns

alternet.org

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones used his InfoWars fortune to acquire a $4,000 cryogenic freezing chamber, more than $100,000 in guns and an array of luxury items, according to a report from the Daily Beast.

The details were contained in a Thursday filing in a Texas bankruptcy court. The filing revealed that Jones’ wealth includes “roughly $54,000 in watches and cufflinks and a fleet of three boats valued at more than $100,000,” the Daily Beast reported Saturday.

“But while the filing offers a glimpse into how Jones spent the millions of dollars he earned by pushing conspiracy theories, it’s not clear that it presents an accurate portrait of his wealth,” the Daily Beast reported.

“Thursday’s filing came after a judge required Jones to submit more accurate financials, revealing $4.8 million in undisclosed assets for a total wealth of $14.7 million.

“And while Jones enjoys a wealthy lifestyle through InfoWars, the disclosures don’t explain how Jones could have comparatively few assets when compared to his even larger InfoWars salary. In 2019, for example, Jones reported $36 million on his tax filing. That number grew in 2021 and 2022, with Jones reporting roughly $38 million in income each of those years.

“In his new filing, Jones claims that he doesn’t own any stocks or bonds, and has just a little more than $200,000 in bank accounts.”

But the report pointed out that “the most interesting item on Jones’ new asset list may be a CRYONiQbrand cryogenic-freezing chamber estimated to be worth $4,000. The company promises to give users “the coldest experience,” blasting their bodies with frigid temperatures.

Jones’ collection of 54 guns is valued at $101,261, the filing stated. It included an acknowledgment that he’s holding on to guns owned by two Jan. 6 Capitol riot defendants as they face prosecution.

Who would win in POS Thunderdome: Guo or Jones?

re: #46 Charles Johnson

I feel like there’s a falsity to how people want to talk about the threat of algorithms/LLMs/AI only in terms of grand peril—

evil thinking machines! human thought irrelevant!

—when the actual threat is that these devices will be folded into an existing system that looks to devalue individual labor as much as possible, and cut corners to achieve an “efficiency” that makes life generally worse but does the job cheaply.

The future ChatGPT promises is…endless mediocrity, with the occasional cultural flair when a machine can be made to confidently say something human beings want said as a pretext to do something awful.

So. We all know about boomerang babbies. The sprogs that return to live in the parents house.

Now. I have lived the life of a boomerang birb babbie that won’t leave the nest. I have a pair of native (not the icky euro-sparrows, though I have a shit-ton of those) sparrows (they nest on to of the bird boxes on my porch) that hatch at least three clutches every spring. This round has a babbie that keeps returning to the nest. My cats live to watch the story.

The picture is not great, but this birb keeps coming back.

Birb that won’t leave the nest.

The other problem with “AI” is basically this guy:

These big algorithms require training. The ones we see being shown off have experienced curation so that they don’t feature anything that would make them problematic and thus a bad buy for your commercial purposes. There’s literal sweatshops of people tagging shit so image generators don’t sample too much gore or sex; ChatGPT is curated so that it doesn’t end up like Tay, echoing back whatever vile shit internet trolls train it to say.

But if we cede tasks to these systems, then the results they can produce are limited by their training…then it’s absolutely necessary to be able to examine both the intentions of the people running the training, and the dataset used to train.

For a lot of people, the mystique of AI is it’s most valuable trait; it’s the box that shits disinterested objectivity, it can’t make human errors…but in reality it’s just a pattern recognition system, and the people controlling such an algorithm are already tweaking what correlates to what. AI can’t create objectivity, it can only shift the subjectivity behind a facade, where it’s curation of already-subjective information is shaped by a small number of people who most likely have material incentives to bend the results.

Letting AI curates themselves, or train other AI, doesn’t resolve this problem, since a day-one choice about what the system correlates will just replicate, and falsities in the training set will simply be treated as “valid” because the system only sees correlation.

Well, I spent two hours meeting a couple of cats this morning, and I will bring them home tomorrow. They are siblings, 11 months old, described as brown tabbies. The boy kitty (currently named Snickers, I want to change this name) took about a half hour to get used to me, but then came out to play with me and let me pet him. The girl kitty (currently named Skittles, we are also changing her name*) was very shy and kept looking at me and only a couple of times got close to me. Then I went over to the rescue and filled out the paperwork and bought some stuff for the cats. I plan on picking up the cats tomorrow.

* I really don’t want my cats named after junk food. So thinking of Japanese names, something like Fuji for the boy kitty and Sakura for the girl kitty.

The post spawn hungeries have started.

So, any of ‘em stuffed with lead weights or is that more of an Ohio thing?

And Nature is generally fine with you dying due to an “advantageous adaption” if it kills you after you have reproduced and passed those genes on.

It’s weird in some cases. The map shows one specific county in northern Vermont near adjacent to the Canadian border. I wonder if there was a spill over.

Don’t trust me, but I think the former informed by the latter. I remember years ago reading that the groups that finally made it to Utah were pretty militant toward any outsiders, esp. the US government. Could be misremembering. They went through some harrowing stuff on the western Illinois border.

The map says 1940. That’s 80 years after they had to quit polygamy, so ….all I can do is speculate. I suspect religious bigotry on the part of the Southern whites who were moving.

That makes sense. I was thinking of the early 1900s diaspora, but either way, I’m sure they had decided that they had to protect themselves from through bigotry against bigots.

In Israel RN. Photos from a local pro-democracy rally that drew in a few thousand:

The “Handmaids” marched this week without their bonnets to symbolize that they’re unafraid of facing those who would strip away their rights.

No shortage of rainbow flags and LGBTQ+ representation at these protests, and while PLO flags have a lot of historical baggage, there’s also no shortage of Arab rights advocates. The general view is that attack on one is attack on all.

In case it wasn’t obvious by this point, the pro-democracy faction has pretty much claimed the Israeli flag as its battle banner. The number of rally-goers with flags outnumbers those without significantly. When they wanted to do an overhead shot to record all the simultaneous protests in different cities chanting “democracy” at the same time, they had to tell folks to put the flags down so the people would actually be visible.

…And for the first time after 12 weeks of protests, supporters of the government’s judicial overhaul decided to show up right after the pro-democracy rally ended.
In small and ugly fashion.
After weeks of calling out protesters for blocking streets and harassing drivers, about 200 government supporters dressed in black showed up and proceeded to block the main street, loudly confront folks leaving the rally, and harass and threaten uninvolved residents along the way. Police teams intervened to stop potential violence, and they scattered after an hour and a half of loud chanting.
