The second album from the Hungarian-born Vienna-based guitarist finds her embracing a broad scope of music, broader even than on her outstanding debut En otra parte. This time the range extends from contemporary composition to jazz etude via music from Brazil, Argentina, Italy and Azerbaijan - all embraced with imagination and creative flair. Pieces played here by Zsófia Boros include Egberto Gismonti’s challenging “Celebração de Núpcias” (made famous on Dança das cabeças), Franghiz Ali-Zadeh’s “Fantasie”, Al Di Meola’s “Vertigo Shadow”, and Carlo Domeniconi’s Turkish-influenced “Koyunbaba”. These Local Objects are rendered universal by Boros’s subtle and sensitive playing in an album recorded at Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo in November 2015 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Angry bitter white person being angry and bitter:

“America is tearing down every meritocratic institution on the phony charge of racism,” she said.

“It has to end.”

“The culture in those [Black] communities has to change,” Mac Donald said.

“There’s a very terrible, destructive, self-destructive ideology in black communities that says that academic effort is acting white. So, if you are a black student who is studying, who is paying attention in class, you will be demeaned as somehow betraying your race.”

She insisted that systemic racism no longer exists in America.

“That is not our reality today,” she said.

“Here’s the reality Megyn, Black privilege. It’s not white privilege, it’s Black privilege. The reality is being Black today, in any mainstream institution confers an enormous advantage … There is not a single law firm, a single bank, a single tech lab in Silicon Valley, a single science lab that’s not twisting itself into knots to try to find, hire and promote as many as remotely qualified Blacks as possible.

“White heterosexual males, it’s over for them. They are at the bottom of the heap.”

It’s like she’s just reading down a checklist of “White Grievances.”

That same camping trip we built a snow cave, big enough to fit two adults and five kids (me being one of the kids) and… we spent the night in that snow cave. It was below zero up and outside of the snow cave we dug, inside the snow cave it was almost 50°

I’ll never forget that. Sleeping in a snow cave I helped dig! Pre-adolescence!

I don’t think Qevin’s being devious, just transparently desperate. If we default on the national debt, it will not be because of foreign scheming or malevolent wishes, it’ll be because a self-deluded shithead would rather keep hold of the gavel than accept reality and put a clean debt ceiling increase to a vote.

Yes, my Boy Scouts experiences were on the whole positive. My brother-in-law is an Eagle Scout. I achieved Life rank and was pretty far into getting my Eagle until they disapproved of my *final community project* which was to arrange a rock concert on the streets of my town and forward all profits to charity. And that was that. I quit without getting the Eagle Scout. Bewildered is a polite way of describing how I felt, the assholes in the offices in Denver and Dallas didn’t care that I had established a band, had original material, in the meantime had almost an hour of okay cover material and had solid community support. That was a no for Eagle Scout.

Whatever.

The Democratic Party has been promoting our state legislators all over the country in fundraising appeals, but the DLCC (the state legislative support arm of the Democratic Party) has never sent a single dime to any Nebraska Democrat.

They did the same when Jane KIeeb was leading the successful fight against the Keystone XL Pipeline, using her and the organsation she founded (Bold Nebraska) to fundraise for other candidates in other states.

When Mrs. Kleeb became the state Democratic Party chair, she asked when the DLCC was going to support us, since they were big on talking us up in other Democratic campaigns. The response we’ve gotten is “LOL no” from the DLCC.

You might say a lot of Nebraska Democrats are really bitter about using us for fundraising in New York or Georgia, but ignoring our candidates here.

“Some who work the forces” protect those who aren’t drag queens.

Man Arrested for Protesting Megachurch Pastor Accused of Soliciting Minor (Daily Beast, today)

For the last few months, Jamie Thomas has gone to the Rock Church in Virginia Beach every Sunday. He’s not there to worship. Instead, he stands on the sidewalk outside the megachurch, holding a bullhorn and chanting, “John Blanchard is a pedophile!”

The 43-year-old Thomas, who told The Daily Beast that he is driven by a mission to “stand up for kids,” has in the past devoted his energy towards protesting government overreach and events hosted by drag queens.

This time around, however, his target is John David Blanchard, Rock Church’s lead pastor.

Blanchard, 52, temporarily and “voluntarily stepped back” from his duties last year after he was swept up in an underage prostitution sting in the local area. He was arrested after allegedly driving to a motel to meet up with a 17-year-old sex worker in Oct. 2021. The teenager turned out to be an undercover detective, and Blanchard was summarily charged with felony solicitation of prostitution and use of a vehicle to promote prostitution.

We need the 50 State Strategy put back in place and this is where I really fault those who forced Dean out as Party Chairman. Harrison just continues the downward spiral of the Party. He needs to go as Chairman.

What we really need is a Stacy Abrams in the Party Chair who would push the Every State Every County Every Town Every Vote policy.

I do believe that Biden is the sort of guy who would take the unconventional route simply to avoid causing untold damage to the economy, whether that’s by having the infamous “$1T platinum coin” minted or arguing that the debt ceiling is unconstitutional and just ordering the Treasury to keep borrowing to pay the bills that Congress voted for. By the time the GQP succeeded in getting the whole mess through the courts on an argument that their dick is bigger than his, they’d have already spent months arguing to the voters that nuking the economy to settle a score is the best way forward.

The Christians are out in force today.

Christopher Link Jones, 55, was arrested late last month in Aiken, South Carolina, the Aiken Standard first reported. An arrest warrant shows Jones charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor under 14. Jones was previously convicted of battery and lewd acts on children in California.

Jones’ California criminal record created rifts at Dinosaur Adventure Land, a creationist theme park where Jones is friends with head preacher Kent Hovind, and where Jones has been accused of sexually abusing a boy. Hovind and Jones have blamed the previous conviction on a plot to silence Jones for what he claims was his work with Infowars founder Alex Jones.

Hovind told The Daily Beast that Jones is still welcome at Dinosaur Adventure Land (DAL) despite the new charges.

Colorado stargazers have something to look forward to this month.

The Lyrid Meteor Shower returns in full swing, and will be visible each night - weather permitting - for about the next two weeks.

It’s an annual event each April, when earth runs into debris from the comet Thatcher.

NASA says the best time to look up is around 9 p.m., away from the city lights. The shower will peak this Friday and Saturday, April 21 and 22.

The Lyrid Meteor Shower offers 10 to 15 meteors per hour at its peak on a moonless night, but are known for uncommon surges that can sometimes bring rates of up to 100 per hour.

They might. Like most studies, they note there are few studies on the intersection of climate change and epilepsy.

Investment in research in epilepsy is much less then far less-common neurologic disorders (epilepsy is not sexy enough).

The problems they note are things like higher temperatures make sleep more difficult, break down medications (for example, mine starts breaking down above 86°F), might increase SUDEPS (people die of SUDEPS more often in summer than winter), &c.

Epilepsy is not necessarily a genetic disease. Most cases are ideopathic (duh we don’t know).

No one in my family was or is known to have epilepsy besides me.

We do know poor sleep causes seizures, and heat causes higher death rates from SUDEPS.

This is a hypothesis (climate change can have an effect) so they recommend study of the problem.

We know weather has effects on all other conditions (death rates from all conditions are higher in winter).

National and regional seasonal dynamics of all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the USA from 1980 to 2016 (October 30, 2018); Imperial College London, University of Michigan, University of Washington

Abstract, full study at the link

In temperate climates, winter deaths exceed summer ones. However, there is limited information on the timing and the relative magnitudes of maximum and minimum mortality, by local climate, age group, sex and medical cause of death. We used geo-coded mortality data and wavelets to analyse the seasonality of mortality by age group and sex from 1980 to 2016 in the USA and its subnational climatic regions. Death rates in men and women ≥ 45 years peaked in December to February and were lowest in June to August, driven by cardiorespiratory diseases and injuries. In these ages, percent difference in death rates between peak and minimum months did not vary across climate regions, nor changed from 1980 to 2016. Under five years, seasonality of all-cause mortality largely disappeared after the 1990s. In adolescents and young adults, especially in males, death rates peaked in June/July and were lowest in December/January, driven by injury deaths.

Not even Nancy Reagan can be all THAT perfect.

Clearly there are indications that she is not.

There’s her campaign trail faux pas when she looked out over a Republican fund-raising crowd in Chicago and gushed with glee at seeing “all these beautiful white faces,” quickly amended to include “black faces.”

I have no school-age children, but I go to school board meetings. I think children’s education is important, and I pay taxes for my school district.

Here, you are required in government meetings to give your name and your address. You can be banned from speaking if you are not from the area covered by the government meeting, unless you have specific business before that government group.

Top of the Beeb now:

The White House has sharply criticised Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for accusing the United States of “encouraging” the war in Ukraine.

Lula said after a visit to China at the weekend that the US needed to start talking about peace in Ukraine.

Visiting Brazil, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met Lula and thanked Brazil for its efforts.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby accused Lula of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”.

Lula, who has pitched himself as a broker for peace talks to end the conflict, said over the weekend that “the United States needs to stop encouraging war and start talking about peace”.

His comments came after meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping. China published a peace plan in February that does not explicitly call for Russia to leave Ukraine.

The new plumbing will go to a different place in the kitchen, so last night we cleaned out the area so we can move our washing machine into that spot when they are done.

After they finish, they will collect the money for that job and the water heater job they already completed.

The video continues with Megan Phelps-Roper (the woman who left Westboro Baptist Church) making a seven hour podcast documentary painting JK Rowling as a victim of a witch hunt, using the exact same framing and even phrases used to defend Anita Bryant back in the day.

Natalie Wynn (ContraPoints) admits when she was invited to the podcast by Megan Phelps-Roper to be some sort of peacemaker between the trans community and JK Rowling. Ms. Wynn now admits that she was blinded to the idea that you can change a bigot’s mind with words, and that if you just use the correct words, you can change their mind.

Several trans listeners contacted Ms. Wynn to let her know they felt she was trying to accommodate two bigots (Phelps-Roper is still a bigot) in the name of centrism.

Yeah, we said that shit. But it’s OK because reasons.

Oklahoma is not OK. That’s why we left.

As I listen to the ContraPoints podcast comparing Anita Bryant and JK Rowling, I’m reminded how I was flamed by Harry Potter fans when I first called out JK Rowling for the bigot she is.

Since that time, Rowling has only gotten worse.

Megan Phelps-Roper is the worst kind of centrist. Because people were able to converse with her on Twitter and convince her to leave her hateful church, she thinks everyone should just be talked to, to deradicalise them. (This ignores the myriads more people who are victimised by bigots.)

While deradicalisation can be a useful strategy, it cannot be the only strategy. Most transphobes who defend Rowling will try to use motte-and-bailey arguments to defend her (or really any bigot), saying things like “show me where she said anywhere she hates trans people.”

Rowling has said in the past she loves trans people, it’s just they’re misguided and they can change. She’s not opposed to trans people, she just thinks they should keep their lifestyles private. God doesn’t hate trans people, he just hates their sin.

Anita Bryant used exactly the same arguments. Centrists covered for her exactly the same way.

I’m okay with the bolded statement, but the Christofascists treat it very differently than I do. I interpret it as, “I should love these people and treat them like humans, I may disagree with them but that’s between them and God.” (For the record: I do not believe that being gay, or trans, is a sin. I’m referring to the general concept, but using this as a specific example.) The Christofascists take it to mean, “God doesn’t approve of your sinful lifestyle, therefore I am going to take every opportunity to remind you how sinful you are and that you need to repent lest you burn in hell.”

I’m not okay with that framing at all. Substitute the word “sin” with “corruption.” (The Bible defines sin as corruption.)

“I don’t hate trans people, I just hate their corruption.”

How do you deal with corruption? You eliminate it.

I almost married a Pentecostal/Assembly of God woman. They are a cult. They rallied around her and made her shun me.

My first wife (this was in Texas) left me after the preacher at a new church she had joined said she should leave me (and take our child) because I was a heathen. Granted I am a heathen, but she knew that before we were even married.

Turns out a few months later the preacher took all the money from the church and disappeared. By then she was already pregnant from someone else from the church (and we were not even divorced yet). Fuck those fake religious fucks.

DOJ identifies Pete Schwartz as the worst Jan. 6 attacker prosecuted to date — and asks for 24 years

rawstory.com

CBS News reporter Scott MacFarlane reported Monday evening that the Justice Department is asking for the worst sentence yet of a Jan. 6 defendant.

Citing the sentencing memo, MacFarlane said that Pete Schwartz “stole chemical munitions, including pepper spray.. left behind by the fleeing officers and used that pepper spray as a weapon to attack those same officers as they desperately tried to escape”

He then assaulted a group of police officers in Washington. Then “Schwartz did not back down. He then joined the larger mob inside of the tunnel in attempting to push through the police line and into the Capitol Building…”

“By Schwartz’s own admission, he viewed himself as being at ‘war’ that day, stating in a Facebook post on Jan. 7, 2021, ‘What happened yesterday was the opening of a war. I was there and whether people will acknowledge it or not we are now at war,’” the sentencing memo continued.

Schwartz threw himself on the mercy of the court, begging for leniency, asking for just 54 months in prison (4.5 years).

But just a few weeks ago, Schwartz told MacFarlane that he was only being jailed “just so they can steal an election.”

“I’ve [been] trapped by my own government. They are terrorists,” Schwartz told MacFarlane. He went on to mention the 14,000 hours of video that Fox host Tucker Carlson claimed to make public. Carlson never made the full collection of videos public only a few selected excerpts. He and Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) continue to hide the rest of the video on Capitol security videos from the American people.

The DOJ is asking that Schwartz get 24 years prison and pay $71,000+ fine. A fund in which Schwartz has been fundraising has collected $71,541 for “Patriot Pete Political Prisoner in DC.”

Lock this asshole up and toss the key away.

Same. I’m not an expert on “Stand Your Ground” laws, but are some really as broadly written to allow a person to kill another person for merely being on their property without consent, without any consideration as to the intent of the unauthorized party?

I mean, I could understand shooting someone who came on to my property with a gun drawn (since that person probably has intent to harm), but putting several bullets in an unarmed person who just showed up at my door because they had the wrong address? That seems like an excessive response which should be illegal.

I agree that I interpret sin differently than they do, as I don’t believe there is such a thing.

I do not have the luxury of imposing my interpretation on them. I must use their definition, because their actions are predicated on how they define sin. They define it with eliminationist rhetoric.

When my state senator argues the I Amendment means everyone is free to hold their religious beliefs, I can agree with that. But that is not what he means by it. He explicitly says atheists have no religious rights, because atheism is not a religion.

I am compelled to use his definition when I am defending my rights.

When Michael Knowles says “transgenderism” must be eradicated, I am compelled to use his definition of “transgenderism” (an ideology and lifestyle), and not mine (a made-up bunch of hooey to scare conservatives).

Ideologies cannot be eradicated, because they aren’t “things.” The people who hold ideologies, they can be eradicated. It doesn’t matter that there is no such thing as transgenderism. Millions of conservative voters believe there is, because they’ve been told there is, and it is a great moral threat which must be eradicated. The only way you do that is eradicate the people who promote this ideology.

The same applies to their “groomer” rhetoric, applied to LGBT+ people (and more broadly, to liberals). What I think a groomer is doesn’t matter, because they aren’t using my definition. When they come for libraries, or LGBT+ people, they are using their definition.

The trial here is whether Faux News and its hosts engaged in actual malice - a legal doctrine which means they made false statements intentionally, or with “reckless disregard for the truth.” IOW, they either knew the statements were false and made them anyway, or they didn’t care because it was more important to them to say the things than to find out if they were true. The texts and tapes that have leaked thus far seem to make this a rather open-and-shut case.

Stand your ground laws state by definition you can use lethal force anywhere you have a right to be to defend yourself. In the broadest usages, stand your ground laws are vigilantism, as you can use “self-defence” to stop a crime (regardless of how minor or whether it affected you or not).

One thing the Tampa Bay Times noted in a very deeply researched article is how many criminals such as drug dealers have successfully used the stand your ground defence, because someone trying to rob them (a crime) does not relate to the crime they were accused of (drug dealing).

Even though he traveled from out of state for the explicit purpose of disrupting the rally, and put himself in the position where he felt threatened, none of that was relevant to the “stand your ground” defense; all that mattered was that he felt compelled to use lethal force in self-defense.

It just gets new life because morans have access to the Internet.

The tiny kernel of truth about a microwave being dangerous is if you use certain containers which can leak chemicals into your food when you heat it. That is solved with glass or other microwave-safe containers.

Reheating food in a microwave and preventing it from drying out (since what microwave ovens actually heat is the water in food) can be accomplished by putting a small amount (1 or 2 tsp) of water in the dish of food you wish to reheat. The water will flash to steam and prevent your food from drying out.

I’ve found that this is a particularly good method for reheating rice. Adding a small amount of water to a bowl of refrigerated rice, covering it semi-tightly with a piece of wax paper, and heating it in the microwave results in pleasantly soft rice.

One should be very careful with leftover rice.

(Cooks Illustrated)

While it’s one of the most common foods (in some countries providing up to three-quarters of daily energy intake), rice may not be the best choice to eat as leftovers. Why? Rice of all types can be contaminated with the spore-forming bacteria called Bacillus cereus. Present but dormant in all raw brown and white rice varieties, the spores are not killed by the boiling cooking water—instead, they are actually revived and converted into potentially harmful live bacteria as the rice cools. If the rice is consumed shortly after cooking there is no problem, as very few bacteria have had the time to multiply. But if the rice is saved, and even stored in the refrigerator for too long, the amount of bacteria will grow. With enough time, the bacteria, which is responsible for 2 to 5 percent of all reported food-borne illnesses, can form enough heat-stable toxin to make a consumer sick within a few hours. The risk is not high, but has most commonly been observed in cooked rice that has been left out for several hours, then refrigerated, and then fried.

To play it safe, follow these guidelines from the USDA when storing and reheating leftover rice: - Do not leave rice sitting out for more than 1 hour before eating or refrigerating. - Reheat rice to 165 degrees as measured with a food thermometer. - Dispose of refrigerated rice after 3 to 4 days.

I have no reason to think she’s lying.

She also regaled the audience with a story where her dad abused her by taking her out in the woods and rode away from her camp on horseback one day, and then told her to get back to camp on her own later in that day with nothing but her horse and gun. She said that her dad went off in a different direction, but that he later said that he was following her at a distance while making bear and animal noises.

Yeah, lucky that she didn’t fire that gun at the noises, or else dear old dad would be dead from a gunshot wound.

All these conspiracy nuts say that Fauci should be jailed, but not a single one of them can identify a crime that he committed. It’s just an article of faith.

Fauci didn’t handle the policy implementation for covid - that was Trump, Pence, and Jared. Those 3 lunatics ignored everything that experts like Fauci said should be done. Fauci wanted masking and social distancing. Trump refused, and famously infected a bunch of people at his rallies and gatherings at the WH, killing Herman Cain and nearly killing Chris Christie. Trump tried infecting Biden and his family at the debates.

It’s all projection all the time with these fuckers.

They’re sure that he was illegally funding gain of function research in Wuhan with US tax dollars. If he was, it may be jail able.

This is precisely why federal law needs to protect abortion rights nationwide. This is why Roe was so important - the fascist/misogynist GOP are intent on destroying reproductive health and women’s rights nationwide, using Dobbs and right wing extremist judges to legislate from the bench when legislatures can’t do it themselves (or some states try to protect women and the GOP can’t abide).

It should be noted that the actual malice standard which is the subject of this trial is the result of the landmark defamation law case New York Times v. Sullivan, and is directly related to the standard of proof required to successfully sue a news organization for defamation. It is for precisely this reason that the corrupt Calvinball Court and its fervent admirers want to find a pretext to revisit this case.

Similar to Trump’s statement he wanted to “open up the libel laws.”

He wants laws similar to the United Kingdom’s.

“Crooks and brigands from around the world come here to launder their reputations, where they couldn’t get exculpation in either their home country or indeed in the United States of America,” says Mark Stephens, a London lawyer who often represents media companies in these cases.

In American courts, the burden of proof rests with the person who brings a claim of libel. In British courts, the author or journalist has the burden of proof, and typically loses.

I discovered this trick as well but the amount of added water is critical. Too much and the rice turns to mush and “too much” is literally a few drops for a given amount of rice.

Ha! I actually use a spray bottle of water and spritz the rice before covering it, and that works well.

I remember reading a few years ago about a study from India where some food scientist was working on a method to reduce the Glycemic Index of basmati rice by cooking it with oil/fat, cooling it, and then reheating it. Supposedly it converts enough of the rice starch into oligosaccharides to bring its GI down into the wheat range, which would be a godsend for us diabetics. I wonder what ever happened to that study? *wanders off to do some Googling*

It’s not just that. Covid and the retiring of baby boomers put a serious dent in the workforce. Not to mention higher paying jobs in other areas make it harder for businesses that traditionally pay little to their frontline (agriculture, fast food, retail) to find enough bodies to keep things moving.

I’ve noticed a lot of the stores and restaurants I frequent have had prolonged staffing shortages and the service quality that is provided is nowhere near what it used to be. Apparently most companies are fine with the lowering of consumer expectations as long as the lowering of profit margins doesn’t follow.

I honestly do believe immigrants are a major potential solution to the labor shortage, especially for jobs Americans either don’t want to do or don’t want to do for the pay offered.

So, that GOP circus in Manhattan yesterday? They did damage to city’s African Burial Grounds memorial adjacent to the federal NPS site by parking there instead of on the street (or paying for parking).

The artist was still mourning his master work when lo and behold, Malliotakis drove up and parked right next to it. Pace didn’t recognize her, but immediately asked why she had the temerity to park next to the monument.

“They told us to park here,” she said, indicating no one.

Pace showed her how the monument had been defiled. She told him to call the City Council member for the district, whose name she did not provide. Then she walked off. We ran her plate — not only was she contributing to the defacement by driving on the plaza, she’s contributing to even worse by driving at all; her car has gotten 27 speeding tickets and six red-light tickets, mostly in her Staten Island district, since 2020, according to city records. Thirteen of those speeding tickets have occurred since Jan. 6, 2022.

Speaking of driving, we ran the plates on all the media cars on the plaza and found that the parking entitlement is a gateway drug to other kinds of anti-social entitlement. Of the 27 cars with New York press plates, only two didn’t have any speeding or red-light tickets. And 21 of them — or 78 percent! — had multiple moving violations.

Yes, There was a high-profile raid last December involving another branch of the Royal Family planning a Putsch, Prince Heinrich XIII of Reuss. He also got wrapped up in a big restitution suit that failed on his end because, it seems, his property was confiscated before 1949 by the USSR, not by the German Democratic Republic, and, due to some “informal” agreement with the Allied Powers, was not subject to reparation..

That drove him into the arms of the Freie Reichsbürger movement, sort of like Germany’s Sovereign Citizens, who do not recognize the legitimacy of the Federal Republic of Germany, claiming it is only a corporation intended to oversee the territories occupied by the Allies after WW2.

It’s a HAIL SCREWPERT MURDOCH last-ditch pass!

Fox News puts blame on Trump in new defamation trial defense strategy

rawstory.com

In its fight against the $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems, Fox News has shifted its strategy to blaming former President Donald Trump

Fox News is requesting that the judge overseeing the case allow it to introduce evidence showing that the network’s commentary about mass voter fraud in the 2020 election were just examples of a news organization reporting on the rhetoric Trump was using - not an endorsement of his claims.

“Such a development, if accepted, could play a key role in the development of the case. To successfully win a defamation suit, the allegedly defamed entity would have to prove the person or organization who defamed it did so with harmful intent,” Reynolds writes.

In sum, Fox is arguing that Trump’s rhetoric about a “rigged” election was newsworthy and the network was just covering his comments as news.

I have been reading the coffee postings here with great interest. The cheap Mr Coffee drip coffee maker I had for the past 7 years died recently.

So I need to purchase a new coffee maker.

I see that some folks have recommended a $160 Ninja coffee maker. May I inquire as why you would recommend it?

Another option is another low range drip coffee maker. Mr Coffee, Hamilton-Beach,Black-and-Decker, etc. This is what I generally go with.

And, of course, there are many other options. Most of which likely require the enthusiasm, skills, and coordination beyond what I can muster prior to my first cup of coffee.

But suggestions are appreciated. I will likely head out later this afternoon to forage for a coffeemaker.

Noem: My granddaughter already has a shotgun and handgun.

Her granddaughter is 2.

She’s got a gun before she’s toilet trained. Noem thinks that this is normal.

It makes perfect sense if guns are not tools, but fetishes. In the sense of magic items that people possess because they imbue powers and are parts of ritual.

(as opposed to paraphilia or commodity fetishism)

The messaging here is that she belongs, she is part of the tribe of reactionary gun-havers and ultimately will embrace their same vision of winnowing society through personal violence. It’s like taking your kid on the fox hunt and letting them be blooded…with the exact same component of class; her grand-daughter will belong to the better kind of people that are permitted to kill, not the lesser kind of people that need killing.

The Friendship Baptist Church’s bill due earlier this month topped $30,000, but Gwynn says that doesn’t tell the whole story.

“We have been paying the bills. That’s what I’m telling you. We have not been negligent,” said Gwynn, “The only time we got behind was because of the pandemic for three years when the congregation fell off in its attendance and that’s going on across the country.”

In a written statement, the utility says, “BGE works with all customers, including Friendship Baptist Church to help them access various payment options and energy assistance resources.”

BGE readily admits that disconnects happen, but it doesn’t want paying customers picking up the bills for those who do not.

It never occurred to anybody in this church to take out a loan to help cover the light bill? Seems like a pretty critical expense.

Yes. They have to match the dimensions of the maker.

I’ve gone through a couple glass coffee carafe drip makers before getting my current Cuisinart drip thermal carafe. Works great and it has a reminder to clean with vinegar/cleaning solution periodically. It also has a carbon filter to make sure that the water comes thru clean before going into the heater element. The carafe keeps the coffee nice and warm for a couple hours, though I usually finish my 4 cups in one shot (20 oz yeti travel mug is my daily dose).

Definitely. Microwave makes it so “rubbery”. I just start the oven at 350 and throw the leftover pizza in. When the preheat timer goes off I wait maybe a minute and shut off the oven. then check it every couple minutes until it is reheated enough. Stays crisper that way, not mushy crust.

Hindu fruitcakes.

New Delhi — An Indian couple has allegedly died by suicide by using a guillotine-like mechanism to decapitate themselves in a sacrificial ritual, police said Sunday.

Hemubhai Makwana, 38, and his wife Hansaben, 35, both died by decapitation after using a homemade bladed mechanism in a hut on their farm in the western state of Gujarat, police said.

“The couple first prepared a fire altar before putting their heads under a guillotine-like mechanism held by a rope,” Indrajeetsinh Jadeja, a police sub-inspector, was quoted as saying by Indian news outlets. “As soon as they released the rope, an iron blade fell on them, severing their heads, which rolled into the fire.”

Fire is considered sacred in Hinduism and it plays a significant role in several worship rituals. The couple apparently designed the device used in their beheading in such a way that their heads would roll into the fire altar, completing their sacrificial ritual.

THE RON DESANTIS megadonor meltdown is accelerating.

On a group chat of wealthy DeSantis donors, images of which were reviewed by Rolling Stone, participants exploded with alarm last week over the Florida governor’s presidential prospects — and his primary chances against Donald Trump.

“What the fuck is wrong with RD?” one participant wrote after DeSantis did not curtail his out-of-state publicity tour to return home amid massive flooding in the Fort Lauderdale area.

Another participant demanded to know who in the group could get in contact with DeSantis most quickly to complain.

The images were shared on the condition that the participants remain anonymous. Rolling Stone verified the identities of the participants, several of whom have donated large sums toward DeSantis and enjoy extensive access in Florida GOP circles.

Over the past few years, the Florida governor has risen to Trump’s top internal rival without even declaring his candidacy. And part of that rise has been fueled by his pull with the GOP’s megadonor class, who prefer him to Trump because, while he brings a similar set of MAGAfied policies, he has not, to date, attempted a coup. That wellspring of financial support has been instrumental in fueling his rise, but the investments are predicated in large part on a belief that he can take down Donald.

That belief seems to be wavering, as the donor revolt has been brewing since at least last month. And it’s not just skittish donors like Richard Uihlein or Thomas Peterffy, who went public with his complaints last week. Several other top donors to DeSantis were livid about the governor referring to the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “territorial dispute,” with at least one major donor calling DeSantis to urge a walk-back, a source with knowledge of the outreach and another person briefed on it say. “My understanding is that the message was: ‘If we wanted a fucking MAGA candidate, we would donate to Donald Trump,’” the second source says.

Key DeSantis Donors Rip Him in Private Chats: ‘What the F-ck Is Wrong With RD?’ (Rolling Stone)

I seem to recall something similar was discovered about potatoes. Initial cooking and then reheating would convert a bunch of the starch (up to 30% ?).

The most kind assessment of this is that he is not as smart about tax filing requirements and finances as he thinks he is. Along with an apparent ability to seek an expert opinion if he is unsure what to do. Perhaps embarrassed to admit to Ginni that he can’t work out the forms for himself.

Which quickly leads one to question why he is in the position that he is in given these fundamental shortcomings in judgement.

Of course, it could also be that he’s lazy and/or blatantly lying.
