NASA have made a wheel capable of withstanding tough Martian terrain, but just how indestructible is it?

▀▀▀
A huge thanks to everyone at NASA Glenn Research Center for having us at the SLOPE Lab, showing their work on this indestructible tire, and helping with the science and animation.
A huge thanks to everyone at Smart Tire Co for showing us around their facility, teaching us about nitinol, and letting us flatten their tires.

Memory metals are neat, but the comments to that video are full of NASA-deniers - those denying there have been landings on the moon, mars, etc.

Of course they do know exactly what needs to be done. But they do not intend to do anything. After all, it would be inconvenient and not rewarding enough personally to them if they were to do the right thing.

Stolen from SpaceX reddit:

Elon sounds very upbeat about the result and now incredibly optimistic about the future.

Opening:

Launch was pretty close to what Elon expected/hoped. Even exceeded some of his expectations.
Pad Damage and launch ring and it’s components is “minimal”
Aiming to be back up and running in 6-8 weeks
Gained a lot of data about Autogenous Pressurization
Hardware structure limits are “better than expected” (speaking about the multiple summersaults)
FTS was activated but it took too long to rupture tanks, tanks took 40 seconds to rupture after FTS activation - he says that the FTS will need to be requalified and that might actually be the longest lead item.
Key Things about the flight:

Lifted off with 30 engines. Vehicle shut 3 down automatically
Engine 19 had a catastrophic event early on - heatshields for Engine 18,19 and 20 were lost due to this
T+62s seconds saw further heatshield damage
TVC was lost at T+85s
EDA: “was an engine trying to relight”.
EM: “We have relight logic for the inner engines but it’s unknown”
No evidence yet that the concrete played a part in engine failures
No evidence that S24 tried to light engines after FTS was activated
SpaceX would not have launched if they knew they would have concrete issues - confirms again that they were confident based on the SF.
It’s very possible that the bottom layer of concrete failed instead of the FONDAG on top
Leading theory in SpaceX is that upon full thrust, sand beneath the concrete was compressed leading to a collapse and subsequent concrete failure.
If they had throttled up with the engines they had, they would have made it to Stage Sep
The lean off the pad was not planned - was an engine led issue.
Water Deluge/Steel Plate Info:

Two layers of steel plates - water-cooled
Should cut down on dust and the “Concrete Tornado”
SpaceX are aware of the acoustics being worse due to a flat plate but confident that it will not effect much because the payload is so high up
Next Flight:

Above 50% chance of reaching orbit - Elon is more confident of reaching orbit next flight than not
Same flight profile as flight one
No payload, just looking for data the next few flights
Flight 2 will sit on the pad for less time. Wants flight 2 to be 2.5s from engine start to liftoff
B9 heat and force shields will be much better because they are built into the booster instead of adapted in the case of B7.
No decision on Ship yet - decision likely this week.
Elon thinks it would be more beneficial to test deorbit and heat shielding (subtly hinting at S28 as the next candidate)
Looking ahead/Misc Things:

Elon thinks 4/5 flights this year
“100% chance of reaching orbit within 12 months”
Raptor production was too high so they’ve slowed down and focusing on upgrades as of late
~$2b on Starship estimated this year
Not anticipating on needing funding to fund further development
Tank farm will see damaged tanks removed and replaced with vacuum sealed tanks.
This was already planned - they will soon replace all vertical tanks with the hotdog tanks

Fucking Google Adsense gave me a policy violation for the Bob Cesca podcast titled “Executing the Baby,” for some stupid fucking reason. I requested a review after changing the title and they still didn’t reverse it.

Their system is absolute shit, but since it was labeled “must fix,” I had to delete that post.

Honestly I’m at the point with these scam artists where I might just turn off Adsense entirely.

Likely not the first case nor the last case of stuff flying across borders. Glad to hear that no one was hurt in this one.

Not really much that can be done. A country nominally at peace randomly shooting questionable stuff out of the sky generally produces rather unfortunate outcomes for innocent passersby from civil aviation.

I am sure that you already know this…

There was a lot of sentiment for that at the time.

However, the leadership in the North was deeply concerned about sparking a guerrilla war.

So they instead settled for guarantees from the Southern leadership that their commands would disband and peacefully return home. And that the Southern leadership would not try that crap again. The hope was that everybody would be far too busy with their lives to pick another losing war.

My North Carolina ancestors on Dad’s side fought on opposing sides. My grandmother was from the mountains and her grandfather was part of an NC Unionist unit. My great-great grandfather was from Central NC and was part of Lee’s army. Based on records, we can only assume he died during Pickett’s charge at Gettysburg.

And then they sent troops to remove the Plains tribes and opened the territory they’d gotten from the Mexican/American war to homesteading, in hope that would distract everybody. Which in fact it did, for 30 years or so.

In other, more positive, news - finally beat Resident Evil 4 Remake on Professional difficulty. Tough does not even begin to describe it. Even had the infinite rocket launcher. There are a couple of really difficult set pieces - and on the Pro difficulty if you mess up, it’s back to the beginning from your last save point.

These speed runners - not to mention folks who can play the game without taking any damage - are otherworldly in their hand-eye co-ordination and memorization.

But the run now gives me Armored Ashley (invincible) and unlocks the Chicago Sweeper - a Tommy Gun with unlimited ammo. Time to exact some revenge!

Burchett is a standard Republican; there is nothing he said that differs from a response from any other current member of the party. The NRA owns every one of them; there is no need for blackmail to explain his behavior — just your everyday Republican lack of concern about guns (and abortion and racism and health care and the welfare of those who are not wealthy etc)

According to the “liberal media,” protesting a USSC justice anywhere except in the approved protest area that’s a minimum one block separated from the Supreme Court itself is a dangerous precedent because the justices might feel “threatened” and it would impact their impartiality so it would be better if there simply were no protests at all.

But if a multi-billionaire with several cases before the court takes one or more justices on holiday to wine and dine them, it’s totally cool because while there’s laws against “threatening” a justice there’s really none against having a call girl tickle their prostates in exchange for a “favorable” look at your case.

I ask myself “Are you crazy? Are you now a vinyl fetishist?”

It works fine. It has played hundreds of LPs. I have spare needles. So far it’s worked just fine.

It’s a workhorse, a 40+ year-old record player design. Now that I think of it, the ONLY record player design I’ve ever played with, and this reminds me of my very first memory, of playing a Queen record on my parent’s stereo way too loud. The song “We Will Rock You.” My first memory. No shit…

Am I too jaded, or could one of the founding thoughts of those kind of conspiracy theories be that “Bigg gubmit cant never achieve creatnes!!! 11rty!!1”

They should tell that to the Roman Empire, or perhaps the Achaemenids.

Great, that kills two birds with one stone: We have fewer skinheads and Klansmen in uniform and plenty more dullards perfectly suited to regularly repeating “Do you want fries with that?”

Hey, how are you coming along with that knee?

Thanks for asking. My PT authorized me to walk outside with others using a cane, though not yet on my own. But my knee still has limited flexibility and certain motions are painful: putting on my left shoe can take a couple minutes and accessing contents on lower shelves or drawers in the dresser can be a challenge. Still cannot drive a car until June at the earliest. A fraction of a second can upend one’s life!

I’ve lived in the American Southeast for most of my life and it’s really easy to understand why this idealized view of the South in the 1800s as something akin to Arthurian legend, of the soldiers who rode (well, really most marched while the officers rode) off to battle like medieval knights in their resplendent finery to make war with the barbarous hordes of the Union.

I always see folks ask how generations of Americans can’t know about major events of the last 100 years or how can kids not know the reality of the Civil War and the reality is they’re simply not taught it. Yeah, I’ve been out of school for almost 20 years now, but I doubt the instruction is much separated today from back then: Months of teaching about the founding of America up to the Revolutionary War, a couple weeks spent on the founding of America itself, months more spent on a sanitized version of the Civil War (raw statistics and slavery treated as though it’s just people not allowed to go home) and the last few weeks spent trying to cram everything that happened between 1866 and today into students heads before the final exams.

Imagine if Democrats under Pelosi had demanded that banning automatic weapons, along with Medicare for all, had been part of raising the debt ceiling under FFVCS. How would THAT have been portrayed?

We don’t know because democrats refuse to play hardball. They’re still trying to play by the old rules and norms. That only works if both sides are acting in good faith. When one side is willing to do whatever to win and maintain power, the other side needs to do the same, ir it will get crushed.

Not sure about the beavers, though.

it’s like selling cigarettes without the tax stamps (which hardly anyone does anymore), but the taxes are MUCH higher.

In California it’s a 15% excise tax, plus 7.25% state sales tax, maybe another 1% local sales tax, plus local municipalities have the option to add up to another 15% if they so choose. And that’s not even counting that the dispensary’s prices are based on they’ve got overhead including rent, utilities, security, etc.
