Some More News With a Wild Suggestion: Maybe Credit Scores Shouldn’t Be a Thing?

Culture • Views: 17,764

YouTube

Hi. In today’s episode, we look at how credit scoring bureaus were originally created to track debt (among other things) in America, how they’ve evolved into a bad-faith tactic for the rich to exert control over poor people, and how we need to revamp the entire system so we’re not using an arbitrary number to evaluate a person’s worth. A human being’s worth not being tied to money? Imagine that!

Special Counsel Jack Smith was personally in attendance for ex-Vice President Mike Pence’s testimony about former President Donald Trump last week, according to three CNN sources.

Last Thursday, Pence testified for more than five hours before the Smith-led Justice Department probe into Trump’s conduct surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol and the 2020 election.

The reporting team of Kristen Holmes, Jamie Gangel, and Katelyn Polantz broke the news Wednesday that Smith personally showed up to hear Pence testify, possibly the first time he’s done so during this investigation:

Smith and Pence interacted while Pence was at the courthouse, and one source described the interaction as respectful.

Smith’s appearance is the first known time the special counsel has attended a grand jury proceeding in the investigation. Smith is leading the criminal probe with a team of prosecutors into the aftermath of the 2020 election and efforts to overturn the results.

Also have to consider that it’s a false flag to cover for the Russians directly trying to assassinate Zelensky claiming Ukraine tried to take out Putin first. (Though pretty much everyone probably thinks that the Russians would try to do it in any case with or without being given a provocation.)

1) There’s no reason to put on a defense if you think that the plaintiff/prosecution didn’t make their case. You might not want to open door to cross examination of your own clients/witnesses or the evidence you produce in defense gets questioned. All you need is a decent enough closing argument to obfuscate and baffle with bulkshit to claim that the plaintiff didn’t make their case.

2) It may mean that they are going to take the loss, but still argue on appeal that this was a bogus case and the facts/evidence insufficient (procedural claims).

3) Trump and ketchup sales to MAL are going to go through the roof.

Really Trump’s only play was to hope that cross examination would undermine Carroll’s credibility as a witness, and from what I’ve read the cross didn’t go well. We’ll see what the jury thinks; they’ll get to hear the Access Hollywood tape of Trump bragging about sexually assaulting women.

Federal Reserve hikes interest rates to 16 year high. They’re still trying to slow the economy to the point of recession, while ignoring that a key reason that inflation is still high is greed by energy companies who continue to keep prices artificially high despite oil prices falling (self-fulfilling). They profit from the spread, and not letting gas prices fall in tandem with oil prices. The price of gasoline is tracking oil, but by a far greater spread than it was just a few years ago (record profits by energy companies shows just how much they’re making).

Yeah, I suppose I didn’t consider that possibility, but from what I know about the way the case has been going, I sincerely doubt Taco Pizza is in such a position of supreme confidence that the plaintiff’s attorneys didn’t make their case. It sounds like their so-called “expert” got cold feet (maybe the check didn’t clear?) and now they’re up the proverbial creek without a paddle.

ADP reported robust private sector job growth in April, and the Fed raised rates only a quarter point, and hinted there would be a pause in further increases. Fingers crossed, we may get a soft landing if the federal government doesn’t default on the national debt (mint the coin if you have to, Mr. President!).

Somewhere at the bottom of this, “religion” can be anything because an abstraction can be evacuated of its putative, also-immaterial concepts and filled with…anything, depending on the shamelessness of the interpreter and the appetite of the audience.

Whenever someone declares a secular thing “religion” because it’s gone sideways—Soviet Communism, capitalism—what’s actually happening is a brief feather touch with the eldritch horror that what happens in our minds has no independent reality; words have no inherent meaning individually, in sequence, or packed into ancient revered texts.

It is easier to conceptualize of a fucked, venal, selfish thing as symptomatic of a parasite, a Big Idea that spreads like an infection, when in fact it’s just the gaping void of unmeaning that is ever-present.

Trump family fails to hand over documents in $250 million New York fraud case

New York Attorney General Letitia James’ Office was forced to request the state Supreme Court judge overseeing her $250 million fraud case against Donald Trump help resolve the failure of the ex-president, his three eldest adult children, and the Trump Organization to hand over documents required for discovery.

James’ Office (OAG) notably “singled out ‘an unexplained drop-off in emails for Ivanka Trump’ as one of the more significant issues,” reports Forbes.

On the subject at the top:

I’ve been watching a lot of Star Trek on TV lately, so I’m seeing ads. The most numerous type is for pharmaceuticals. Second or third are ads for credit cards that are aimed at young people. They show people talking about their happy experience with this card they use to build their credit score, they buy cars, make friends, get married, buy a house, and have a baby. Always in the correct order.

I do not see a way for financial education to make it into public schools. Leaches are attaching themselves before the lesson on what a leach is.

‘It wasn’t happenstantial’: Oregon GOP lawmakers skip work to avoid abortion law votes

alternet.org

Oregon Republican lawmakers skipped work Wednesday to prevent state Democrats from pushing forward legislation on abortion, gun control and gender-affirming health care, KXAN reports.

Per KXAN, the GOPers said in a press release “they were protesting over bills not being written in plain language, claiming violations of procedural rules, state law and the state constitution.”

Anything to ensure minority rule…

On another point, I always have liked King’s “original” version of You’ve Got a Friend slightly more than JT’s (even though King and Taylor’s recording sessions for their respective albums overlapped, with many of the same backing musicians); Taylor’s version was what I grew up on, but King’s version seems have a bit more something:

I think Menagerie and her handlers have determined the memory span of the average rank and file MAGAt, and it looks like roughly 3 weeks. Just 6 weeks ago, she was calling for an invasion of Mexico. 3-4 weeks ago, she was telling us how disgusted she was with New York, though it paled beside the disgust New Yorkers felt, and freely expressed, toward her. Until today, she was embroiled in the backlash from her insane attack on adoptive parents.
Like most Repug politicians, she does not believe a word of the stupid lies she tells, she is pandering to the degenerate repug base for the sake of power and wealth. The base is the problem.

How is it that Keith looks younger than he did years ago? I am reminded of a joke (I’m stealing it from someone, please forgive if I read it first here)…

Adam & Even were walking in the Garden of Eden, in the presence of God. Adam was naming all the creatures.

“That big furry thing there. He’s just lying on the ground, doing nothing. I name him… Lion.”

“Let it be so,” said God.

“And that one hanging from the tree, moving so slow. I name him… slo… slo… sloth!”

“Let it be so,” said God.

Eve spoke up. “God, who is that, sitting under the apple tree, playing guitar?”

And God said, “Oh, that’s Keith Richards. He was here when I got here.”

Carole King is superior to JT in every way. A bit more everything.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a lot of James Taylor’s stuff, including his version of You’ve Got a Friend; like I said, I grew up on JT, King, Lightfoot (RIP), Croce, Mitchell, and a whole lot of other 70s singer-songwriters, because my parents played a lot of it around the house and such. But, I never really figured out that King wrote You’ve Got a Friend until well into adulthood and, even then, I never heard her original version until just within the past few years, simply because lazy, forgetful, and preoccupied with more pressing life things.

Boy, was I depriving myself, because, while I still love JT’s guitar-centric version, King’s piano-centric original just has more emotional punch. I totally get why JT wanted to do a version of it himself, especially that early in his career, because King was already a master songwriter way before she started her own recording career in earnest and You’ve Got a Friend is a great song.

I worry about one of my cats getting kind of loud. We’ve always kept a cat water bowl in the bathtub. I can’t remember how that started, but encouraging cats to drink is good, and more locations is encouraging. The acoustics in there are great, and Presta somehow discovered that, and he goes in and sings to his water before taking a drink. He’s aging fast (living beyond expectations, at this point) and his voice is a little more hoarse, and he can swing down to this amazing howlly low note. I’m afraid it sounds like I’m torturing him, or starving him, and I think sound carries best between the bathrooms in this place.

re: #187 Tahitinho

Keith’s got to have one helluva Dorian Gray portrait stashed somewhere….

There is no way this bribery thing is true. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch.

If it was true, we would have known about it a long time ago.

He’s the patron saint of children, jobs and health. His name is also invoked against cramps, false witnesses, headaches and perjury.

Patron saint of heavy metal musicians and the walking dead as well, I suspect…
