There’s some new technology called an Application Programming Interface that could make the information easily available and stop the scraping.

OT: Weight loss update.

Around the end of May, I hopped on the scale and I was 143 pounds. That is probably not much to any of you but it’s the heaviest I’ve ever been (I am not a tall man).

So I’ve been focused on eating better and exercising more in June and I’ve purposefully not weighed myself in 30 days to give these changes time to have some effect.

Today is July 1st. So I hopped on the scale this morning and…

Needless to say, I’m happy! 💪🏼❤️

Now to keep pushing…

They already do ‘Show us your fruits’ at the California border. All of Florida is within 100 miles of a national border. They’ll do whatever they want until they’re stopped.

Not just that, but Florida is implementing Stasi-type crap.

There aren’t enough cops in the state to enforce this bullshit, so they’re trying to get citizens to enforce it for them: If you allow someone in your vehicle who is undocumented, you go to jail. The idea is to get citizens to enforce the law for them out of fear of being arrested.

Don’t call Republicans fascists though, it hurts their feelings and brings out the charges of “where’s the civility” from the media and centrists.

Elmo’s full of shit, the investors are demanding he make back some of the 59% in lost ad revenue and his “solution” is to use a “temporary emergency” to force power users to pay him the privilege of using the service.

His only true skill — and it is a real one — is in marketing products. In the past, he had taken over companies that had not been successful in selling their products. In this case, he took over a thriving business (if you ignore its historical lack of profitability) and has no one running it except himself by fiat; he does not have the technical skills or knowledge for this role. And has worked hard at destroying all features that made it so attractive to its users.

When he was a state senator, Rep. Mike Flood (R-NE1) took out $835,592 under the Paycheck Protection Program, and was forgiven $840,306.

Since the DNC isn’t interested in advertising against Nebraska Republican hypocrisy (and he won in a very close race in a special election after Rep. Mike Fortenberry was convicted of taking foreign campaign contributions in a literal brown paper bag), he’ll probably get reëlected.

Of course Musk is playing up “Data Scrapers” because it implies higher value for twitter content. Content being the reason people come to twitter at all.

But then he jerks the content creators, as well as us proles around, and makes accessing the diminishing amount of content difficult. And drives off the advertisers as well.

Monetizing the magats and nazis doesnt work because nobody else likes them. And because they have neither useful content nor money.

It also doesn’t help that, on top of everything else, Musk is unlikeable.

Elon Musk announces new daily Twitter limitations as thousands of users report problems accessing site

Musk said that verified accounts are limited to reading 6,000 posts a day. For unverified accounts, the number drops drastically to 600 posts a day.

Those numbers are interesting. The 6,000 number is definitely going to keep data scrapers from getting accounts and scraping on behalf of them.

IMO the “data scrapers” line is nothing but an excuse. You can’t “temporarily” stop data scrapers by doing something like this; they’ll be back as soon as you lift the restrictions, within milliseconds.

2018:
Why Saudi Arabia Would Want to Invest in Elon Musk and Tesla

“…according to Musk, who recently made news when he talked and tweeted about taking Tesla private, the investors controlling Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund have approached him multiple times since the beginning of last year. Most recently at a meeting on July 31 which, according to his blog post, Musk left “with no question that a deal with the Saudi sovereign fund could be closed, and that it was just a matter of getting the process moving.”

“…There are some ways that Musk may mesh well with Saudi investors.* As spelled out in a new series of interviews in Wired UK, Musk abhors red tape and the status quo, and will throw everything at making his vision real.”

Yesterday, Lincoln, Nebr. Journal-Star. TL;DR, the government is claiming a cyberattack occurred on the court system’s internal Intranet.

Nebraska Judicial Branch attacked by hackers, but no sensitive data compromised (yesterday)

The Nebraska Judicial Branch’s internal intranet was attacked by hackers this week.

But State Court Administrator Corey Steel said Friday: “There was no compromise of sensitive data related to court cases or personally identifiable information.”

He said on Wednesday morning the Administrative Office of Courts and Probation was informed of a claimed cyberattack on the Judicial Branch internal intranet.

They immediately began reviewing logs of the intranet to determine the nature and scope of the attack.

“Through the course of the investigation, a screenshot of our intranet site was found and posted by the group claiming the attack. The Nebraska Judicial Branch intranet was targeted along with governmental entities in other states,” Steel said in a statement.

They do not name these other states.

Disruptive!

“…Twitter has refused to pay its Google Cloud bills as its contract comes up for renewal this month, Platformer has learned, leading to a high-stakes conflict between the companies that could result in Twitter’s trust and safety teams being crippled.

While Twitter hosts some services on its own servers, the company has long contracted with Google and Amazon to complement its infrastructure. Prior to Musk buying Twitter last year, the company signed a multi-year contract with Google to host services related to fighting spam, removing child sexual abuse material, and protecting accounts, among other things.

Twitter has been trying to renegotiate its contract with Google since at least March, the Information reported that month. It had also delayed payments to Amazon Web Services, leading the company to threaten withholding advertising payments.

Around June 21st Twitter was reported to have started paying Google again. I haven’t seen anything since.

June 21 (Reuters) - Twitter has resumed paying Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) Google Cloud for its services, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Bloomberg News reported the news earlier on Wednesday.

A report from Platformer earlier this month said Twitter had refused to pay its Google Cloud bills as its contract came up for renewal.

Linda Yaccarino, the social media network’s new CEO, helped restore Twitter’s relationship with Google, and the two companies will explore a deeper partnership that involves Google’s advertising spending on Twitter and its use of the social media company’s data access tool, the source said.

I never followed @jack so I don’t know if this is normal. But do CEOs regularly play the role of outage reporters on websites? Like does Jeff Bezos announce AARs on AWS outages? Is Elon the most overrated and underskilled SRE in the world?

Angry Staff Officer’s 2022 Battle of Gettysburg thread. July 1st

First phase -
Buford’s Union Cavalry Division rides in front of Union Army to find Lee’s Army. Buford selects the hill lines West of Gettysburg for his defensive position.

(Lee’s Army, having marched North along the Shenandoah Valley is approaching Gettysburg from the West. One Union goal is to keep the Union Army between Lee’s Army and the Eastern Seaboard cities as well as Washington, DC.)

In twitter, the thread starts at

Buford was, arguably, the greatest Cavalry/Dragoon officer of the US Army. It’s a real pity he so unknown these days. His delaying action on July 1, 1863 saved the Union by giving time for Meade to gain the high ground.

No. Seriously, this is nuts. Microsoft had a *huge* outage of Teams earlier this week (ask me how I know, I got rudely awakened, that’s how) and no, Satya Nadella is not announcing there are issues. AWS has regular issues, and no, Jeff Bezos is not out there announcing problems. You certainly won’t see our execs announcing that online banking is down. That’s what your press team is for. Musk thinks he can do it all. I keep hoping he trips over his dick in a big way.

Attention gardeners! Bumper crops of zucchini and summer squash?
Here are some ideas besides zucchini bread:

Easy Marinated Zucchini Thin slices, like pickle chips

Marinated Zucchini thin sliced lengthwise like stackers

Refrigerator Zucchini Pickles garlic and dill, how can you go wrong?

Marinated Zucchini Tomato Salad

why, yes, we are trying all of these and more from now until the end of summer…

Also, taking Elon’s word at face value for a second… is Twitter really worth scraping for AI training or whatever?
Its a hive of misinformation, disinformation and toxicity. Its succinct I guess, but nothing is eloquent or descriptive because of the character limit. And its full of repetitive “filler” information.

Who wants that in a foundational LLM dataset?

I still smile thinking about the time Homer had to run the simulation in the classroom, after he was forced to go back to college: “Don’t worry” the professor says, “It’s a simulator. You can’t actually create an emergency.” Cuts to scene of klaxons and red sirens, while people in hazmat suits are clearing the building.

Too late. I deactivated my account. Fuck that place.

i closed out my first account, but then got drawn back in because it became difficult to follow Ukraine updates, and I have a morbid fascination with the dead Russkie daily totals. There’s just part of me that is like “how the fuck do you lose 600 soldiers in a day and not have somebody back home screaming bloody murder?” The only problem is I can only get it to work on my desktop because my username and password, which I very carefully wrote down, wont’ work on my phone or ipad. So this just really sucks. And no, I am not setting up a third goddamned account just to try to solve it.

‘They booed him when he arrived, they booed him when he left’: Lindsey Graham taunted by South Carolina Trump crowd

rawstory.com

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) got a rough welcome in his home state on Saturday when he tried to address a crowd in Pickens, S.C., that showed up to see former president Donald Trump speak at an early July 4th celebration.

According to the Greenville News, “Graham, from nearby Oconee County, said he was going to help Trump win the 2024 general election and even pointed out that he was part of the Senate Judiciary Committee that helped bolster the Supreme Court’s conservative sheen,” and then added, “Despite that, the crowd remained unmoved and the booing continued for just over six minutes of Graham’s remarks.”

According to a commentator from Right Side Broadcasting Network which was there to stream the event and the former president’s speech live, “I think one of the most noteworthy things that we witnessed was the booing of Lindsey Graham.”

Gee, I wonder why that wimp gets no respect?

AWS has regular issues, and no, Jeff Bezos is not out there announcing problems. You certainly won’t see our execs announcing that online banking is down. That’s what your press team is for. Musk thinks he can do it all. I keep hoping he trips over his dick in a big way.

My tongue was most certainly firmly in my cheek on that one. ;-)

Yep. She wrote a book published in 2021 that was less than flattering to Trump and Melania:

nytimes.com.

In her book, titled “I’ll Take Your Questions Now,” Ms. Grisham recalls her time working for a president she said constantly berated her and made outlandish requests, including a demand that she appear before the press corps and re-enact a certain call with the Ukrainian president that led to Mr. Trump’s (first) impeachment, an assignment she managed to avoid.

“I knew that sooner or later the president would want me to tell the public something that was not true or that would make me sound like a lunatic,” Ms. Grisham writes, offering a reason for why she never held a briefing.

Indeed it does look promising:

📌 A week since Prigozhin revolted, which shot down 6 aircraft & killed “more than 10 (no one knows for sure) 🇷🇺 soldiers - no measures have been taken to punish the rebels.”

📌 Rather, Prigozhin travels around and freely enters Russia - and everyone behaves like “this is normal.”

📌 None of the “incompetent or cowardly” government leaders, nor those who ran away when Prigozhin showed-up, have been punished. AND the “President” doesn’t even talk about it.

⚡️⚡️⚡️📌 “The result??

ANOTHER REBELLION IS NOT FAR OFF. WE ONLY NEED TO WAIT FOR ANOTHER DEFEAT AT THE FRONT AND THE REBELLION WILL BEGIN .”

⚡️⚡️⚡️📌 “It does not matter who starts the revolt - NOW NO ONE WILL RESIST AGAINST THE REBELLION. NOBODY AT ALL.

IT MAKES NO SENSE RISKING YOUR LIFE DEFENDING SUCH A USELESS AND MISERABLE GOVERNMENT.”

📌 You cannot save a country whose leaders are so “rotten that they have lost even the elementary instinct of self-preservation. They prefer to do nothing.”

Louisiana Republican-backed anti-LGBTQ bills vetoed by Democratic governor

alternet.org

Three anti-LGBTQ pieces of legislation have been vetoed by Louisiana Democratic Governor John Bell Edwards, The News & Observer reports.

According to CNN, HB 648 “would bar those under 18 in Louisiana from receiving gender-affirming surgeries, puberty blocking medications and hormone treatments, and punishes health care professionals that provide them with the revocation of their license for a minimum of two years.”

Earlier this month, CNN reports, Edwards said during a press conference, “I will tell you that on those issues, the judgment of history, I believe, will be very clear. It will be as clear as the judgment of history has been on those who didn’t want civil rights in the 50s, for example. But I am not going to wait until then to say that it’s wrong. My judgment today is that those bills are wrong.”

During the waning days of Louisiana’s legislative session, lawmakers passed a series of controversial bills: a ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors that includes puberty-blockers, hormone treatment and surgery; a ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill that broadly bars teachers from discussing gender identity and sexual orientation in public school classrooms; and a measure requiring public school teachers to use the pronouns and names that align with what students were assigned at birth.

The publication further notes:

Edwards vetoed all three bills. Edwards — who is in his final six months of office, unable to seek reelection this year due to consecutive term limits — has repeatedly described the bills as wrong, divisive and targeting a vulnerable group of people. State lawmakers will soon decide by majority vote whether they will return to the Capitol for a veto session, which would begin July 18.

When the Court acts unconstitutionally

Kagan’s defense in Nebraska v Biden is a thing of profound beauty. Not because she riffs on legal references regarding loan forgiveness. It is the outright unconstitutional actions of the conservatives. They did not like the perfectly clear instructions form Congress and the legitimate actions taken by the President. So the conservatives simply played Calvinball and made new rules.

This is not the law.

Sky News, three days ago

Jacob Crouch: Mother and stepfather ‘repeatedly abused’ 10-month-old baby before killing him, court told

TL;DR, they used the Bible to justify beating their child to death slowly over ten months.

Christians are out in force saying this is the result of “atheism” and “nihilism” (nevermind that they used the Bible to justify beating a child and called the child a “demon”).

Jacob Crouch was 10 months old when he was pronounced dead in his cot at home in Linton, near Swadlincote in Derbyshire, as a result of peritonitis - an infection of the lining of abdominal organs caused by a traumatic bowel injury.

Jacob was found to have 39 rib fractures and 19 visible bruises at the time of his death, on 30 December 2020.

His mother, Gemma Barton, 33, and stepfather, Craig Crouch, 39, are standing trial at Derby Crown Court for murder and child cruelty offences, which they deny.

The couple are said to have “encouraged and applauded each other” as they assaulted Jacob “on a regular basis”, the prosecution told the court.
