These Two Brothers Are Very Weird: Sparks. Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 15,064

It’s hard for me to comprehend what a newcomer to Sparks would make of seeing brothers Ron and Russell Mael for the first time. Ron, the mustached one behind the keys, looks like he once was a silent film star and just fell off the silver screen (and is a bit grumpy about it.) On the other hand, Russell, with his upbeat posture, sings about a girl crying in her latte. Hopefully, by the time Russell introduces us to the second tune, about a 22-hour-old child seeing the world and wishing to go back to whence he came, the innocent viewer/listener will understand the twisted humor Sparks has been dispensing for over 50 years across a few dozen albums.

When the duo’s first records came out in the early 1970s, I managed a record store and played the albums on our turntable. Sometimes it would drive away customers (Sparks are an acquired taste), and other times it would kindle new friendships. I’d have never dreamed that Sparks would be making music all these years later, let alone playing at my office desk. And I also could not have imagined that the band’s latest album, The Girl Is Crying In Her Latte, would be as good as ever. After three new songs, Sparks takes one dip into the past, “a Sparks golden oldie,” as Russell puts it. With a great band behind them, Ron and Russell played the song “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us,” bringing unimaginable joy to me and hopefully to those just discovering Sparks.

From Dawn to Dusk and Back Again, Stephen Wilkes Pursues Natural Drama in Remarkably Detailed Panoramas
thisiscolossal.com

These photos are really fascinating: sort of a “where’s Waldo” vibe!

Whether atop a 40-foot lift truck in the center of Paris, in a small house on a far-flung island, or perched beside a Serengeti watering hole, photographer Stephen Wilkes certainly has patience on his side. Sitting in one spot for hours on end, he sets up his camera to capture a single scene over the course of a full day or more, tracking the dramatic movement of weather and the sun over expansive landscapes. Day to Night, a forthcoming book published by Taschen, highlights 60 of the artist’s most compelling images, from U.S. National Parks to iconic international landmarks to remote wildernesses brimming with wildlife.

Wilkes carefully selects his location and takes more than 1,500 exposures from a fixed angle to follow the gradual changes in light and the bustling activity of humans and animals. To get the scene of visitors at the Grand Canyon just right, for example, he slept in a watchtower during a 36-hour shoot. “There was, of course, no artificial light, so I had to wait for the moon to light the canyon. I had only one hour of exposure to get this right,” he says. When he returns to the studio, he painstakingly filters all of the images into a single composition, producing pieces akin to distilled timelapses.

Good on Sheryl Crow for calling out Jason Aldean. It’s a disgusting artistic statement to make. Unfortunately this kind of thinking is everywhere. I get weary every time I see a Gadsden Flag in any physical space. Violence is an undercurrent when you see that fucken flag.

Literally just clicked over here to make sure Charles had posted this!

The show they were doing this year was at LEAST as good as the one they toured with last year and featured 11 songs they didn’t play then. The tour ended at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday night and now they are going to be working on a movie project to follow up Annette from 2021 for the foreseeable future.

Some have suggested that their ages (Ron turns 78 this year, Russell 75) and the fact they finally played the Hollywood Bowl might mean they are done touring, but there is nothing about their show that seems like a farewell to me.

EstebanTornado1963  Jul 18, 2023 • 8:09:29pm

Fuck that Jason Aldean, he’s lucky he wasn’t killed on 1 October, and doesn’t show any thankfulness or humility. Just a piece of shit like Steve Scalise.

Yes. Molly Hatchet is wrong for their glorification of the CSA. It’s not just the flag at their shows, it’s in their lyrics too. I’m well aware.

They still made a few really good songs that please my ears today. Humans are fucken weird.

So many guys like this fuckwit still feel that compulsion to write “Big, manly men who need to constantly overcompensate for small testicles” music that was wildly popular in the genre after 9/11. The sort of assholes who then turned around and screamed that the Dixie Chicks were “traitors” for criticizing the boy-president for a war that nowadays they treat like the New Vietnam in avoiding ever admitting they supported it.

John Wayne bought my Dad several drinks in Ouray, CO. It was pops’ first teaching job, he was teaching classes from grade 7 up to 12 and everything in between, 15 hour days. Then this film crew shows up. J.W. was in town filming True Grit and being the degenerate alcoholic that he was he drank every night in Ouray at the Outlaw (still in operation today). My Dad was there, in his early 20s, and the rest is history. He taught more than a few classes hung the fuck over, he told me not that long ago…

Here’s what John Wayne had to say about black people (1971 Playboy interview)

“I believe in white supremacy until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don’t believe in giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people,” he said.

Wayne also said that although he didn’t condone slavery: “I don’t feel guilty about the fact that five or 10 generations ago these people were slaves.”

(not a word about Jim Crow, pogroms and lynchings, redlining, denial of voting rights, etc. Apparently to a right winger, the 13th Amendment was already more than enough and how dare black people want more).

and here’s what he said about the indigenous:

“I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that’s what you’re asking,” Wayne said. “Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.”

John Wayne is not known as a great actor, but his acting in True Grit was excellent. His only Oscar.

I’ve learned to appreciate Wayne’s acting, even though he seldom had to really do much. I was able to raise my GPA in college by taking movie classes. One term was on directoral styles. We saw and critiqued Red River by Howard Hawks. It was a revelation to see Wayne play a dark character, much like his role in The Searchers. His Tom Dunson is not a likeable character. And the other actors were astounding. Montgomery Clift was perfect and Walter Brennan was the character we would all learn to love in movie after movie.

The ending, shown below, presents the final confrontation between Dunstan, who has fallen into a Captain Ahab obsession on getting the cattle to market that causes him to lose his humanity, and his adopted son, a revelatory Montgomery Clift playing a very different sort of man than Dunston represents. One who succeeded when Dunston fialed.

Man, the music as Wayne walks through the cattle is perfect. By the great Dimitri Tiomkin

Interestingly, the scene begins with a man who is more a force of nature. It ends with John Wayne just being John Wayne. They are two different characters. He could act but he so seldom pushed himself.

Got an A+ in the class. Graduated with honors by 0.2 points. John Wayne helped.

Yep. Great art is not always made by great people. Wayne was not unusual at all in his views, similar to most conservatvies of the age (Robert Byrd comes to mind). If he had lived longer, would Wayne have changed his views?

But, the fact that all 3 of his wives were of Spanish descent indicates that his personal life was complex.

My wife and I will be going to see “Barbie” in a couple days at the historic Midwest Theatre in Scottsbluff. (They’re also playing the movie at their drive-in theatre, but we’d rather go for the overpriced theatre popcorn and soda.)

We’ll make dinner and a movie out of it and go out to eat, too. Special trip to Scottsbluff, just for enjoyment and not for a physician or groceries or whatnot.

There are a lot of daylilies with a purple center but only Pandora’s box is almost pure white. It really stands out.

Just did a quick google search. I found out the Imax screen in Lexington is a digital projection. There are very few theaters nationwide which will screen the movie on 70mm film. The closest to me are Indianapolis and Nashville, but I’m not going to drive for hours just to watch a movie.

Management found itself in a bind because we had two people quit in the same week, one of whom was the part-time auditor that hadn’t been here more than 2 months. So now I’ve spent the past four nights training…well, the me from 10 years ago. Young, friendly, eager to please, interested in all sorts of things, and just all around a cool guy. Too bad they decided to have him train with the cranky old fart who just wants to be left alone to watch Youtube and read political junkie blogs.

East Texas pastor arrested, charged with indecency with a child (Tyler Morning Telegraph, six hours ago)

An East Texas pastor has been arrested on accusations of indecency with a child.

Timothy Nall, 68, of Hollylake Ranch, was booked Monday into the Smith County Jail on a charge of indecency with a child by sexual contact. Charges were brought forth by Wood County, according to online jail records.

Nall is the pastor at Mt. Pigsah Baptist Church in Mineola, according to the church’s website.

According to the Daily Journal in Tupelo, Mississippi, Nall was tried in August 2014 in Alcorn County Circuit Court on a child sexual battery charge, but the judge declared a mistrial after the jury was unable to reach a verdict. The Daily Journal also reported Nall was reindicted one month later on one count of sexual battery and one count of fondling. The Tyler Morning Telegraph is pursuing more information about the outcome of that second trial, which was scheduled for November 2014, according to the Daily Journal.

The vatniks are jamming GPS? That’s why the Gods of War saw fit to create laser guidance.

Everybody and their little dog too have been jamming GPS from day one of this entire fuckup in Ukraine. Purely GPS-guided weapons have been obsolete for at least twenty years unless the other side’s most valuable assets are goat herds and grass huts.

As for laser guidance good luck getting a LANTIRN-equipped flying platform to illuminate any location you might wish to deliver a suitable billet d’amour. That’s why the Gods of War saw fit to create Igla, Shilka, Buk, TOR, StarStreak etc.

Laser guidance, inertial guidance, celestial guidance, ground feature recognition, VOR/TACAN/NDB, civilian radio transmitters, lotsa ways to figure out where you are if you’ve got some computing power. Russians have always loved to jam everything, so it pays to be prepared for this. Also, good luck using your car GPS or Strava in Moscow these days because they like to spoof signals too.

Trump’s fellow travelers in Michigan are in the #FAFO phase of finding out that their criminal conduct has consequences. They tried to overthrow the govt and engage in multiple felonies to support Trump’s effort to end democracy in America by stealing the election.

Everything GOPers claim Democrats were doing (all with no evidence of any actual fraud or conspiracy to commit fraud) are things that we have miles of evidence and audio/video proof of criminal conduct from Trump on down, including Eastman, Rudy, and all the rest of Trump’s goon squad. It includes violent efforts to interfere in the certification as well as interfering in federal elections by committing fraud to claim that the election went for Trump when the official certifications went for Biden.

Every last official who went through with Trump’s schemes belongs in prison, including Trump’s fellow GOPers in Congress. None of them are immune, nor should they be.

They tried ending democracy on 1/6, and they’re still at it.

Meanwhile, all these fuckers are silent over Trump and Kushner getting *billions* from the Saudis and other sources. Trump repeatedly violated the Emoluments Clause while in office to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars. Every trip to one of his golf businesses directed federal funds at his companies (which he overcharged for repeatedly).

Tears of impotent rage as Trump is being held to account and the GOPers aren’t saying Trump is innocent of the crimes for which he’s indicted. They claim it’s a witch hunt or just straight up lie or distract, deflect, or obfuscate.

Looks like Putin will just have to stay in his bunker after all…

Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit of the BRICS group of emerging economies in South Africa in August “by mutual agreement”, South Africa’s presidency said on Wednesday.

Russia will instead be represented by its Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at the Johannesburg summit, alongside the leaders of Brazil, India, China and South Africa, the presidency said in a statement.

South Africa faced a dilemma in hosting the summit because, as a member of the International Criminal Court (ICC), it would theoretically be required to arrest Putin for alleged war crimes if he were to attend.

a witch hunt should be easy to disprove then

what theyre really mad about is that trump is being investigated at all.
and through those investigations there’s probable cause to indict

it would be one thing to say an innocent man shouldnt have to waste his time and money defending himself in court
(untrue but understandable)

it’s another to imply he has some right to not be investigated at all

I was in a grocery store the other day with my 96-year-old father and an 85 year old woman in line. We were waiting on a woman in her 70s and they rang up a large order for her over $250 as she sat there, chatting happily with the clerk, and when the total came, she decided oh, I think I’m going to now pull out my checkbook, and then she proceeded to write a check in red ink for the wrong amount and then had to do it again in black ink for the right amount. I sat there seething silently, not wanting to make too much of a scene but my dad prides himself to be able to use an ATM card and use it quickly in the store and he and the 85-year-old woman who also had her ATM card ready started ripping the 75 year old a new asshole for trying to write a check:
“who writes a check I’m 96 and I know how to use a card” &the other lady said “and I’m 85 and know how to use a card what’s wrong with you youngster”? 75 year old skulked out of there like a chastised teen —It was hilarious.

Babylon 5 is coming out on Blu-Ray. Oddly neither the station nor the cast are on the box.
The cast is probably missing so they don’t have to be paid, but I do not know why they’d have a bunch of ships without the station the show is centered around.
It’s the HBO Max remaster at a higher bitrate.

One of the stores near me instituted a check out lane specifically for people who want to chat (usually lonely, older people). I love that so much!

The verb to sack is from to give the sack, to dismiss from employment, and to get the sack, to receive one’s dismissal.

Earlier versions used the nouns bag and canvas. To give the bag means to dismiss, but originally had the opposite signification: to leave without warning. For example, in A quip for an vpstart courtier: or, A quaint dispute between veluet breeches and cloth-breeches Wherein is plainely set downe the disorders in all estates and trades (1592), the English writer and playwright Robert Greene (1558?-1592) thus addressed the shoemakers:
Well for your knauery, you shall haue those cursses which belongs vnto your craft: you shall bee light footed to trauell far, light witted vpon euery small occation to giue your maister the bag.

It is generally said that the expressions to give/get the sack (or the bag, or the canvas) were taken from the practice of journeymen mechanics who travelled in quest of work carrying their own tools in a bag. When they were discharged, their employers handed them back the bag, where their tools had been packed up preparatory to their removal.

However, nothing seems to corroborate this theory, which anyway does not account for the original meaning of to give the bag, to leave without warning.

IN FRENCH

The verb saquer, or sacquer, attested in 1866, also means to dismiss from employment.

It is apparently from the obsolete phrase donner (à quelqu’un) son sac et ses quilles, literally to give (someone) their bag and their skittles, recorded by Randle Cotgrave in A Dictionarie of the French and English Tongues (1611):
Donner son sac, & ses quilles à. On luy a donné son sac, &c. [= He has been given his bag, etc.] He hath his pasport giuen him, he is turned out to grazing; (said of a seruant whom his maister hath put away.)

Like, I am sure, a substantial number of my fellow ancient veteran Lizards, I well remember the days before universal card-readers in grocery stores (and, astonishingly, the economy worked just fine!), and if I wanted to pay by check -and not hold up the line - I’d simply write one out and sign it before shopping: and only have to fill out the numbers. Not all that hard (though, even given the numerous failpoints, card-readers and self-checkout ARE often quicker/easier).

Screw Screwitt turns on Tommy T

Enough, Sen. Tuberville. It isn’t ‘pro-life’ to damage military lives.

washingtonpost.com

At every level, those below depend on the competence of those above. The nation’s political leaders, admittedly, might not have always selected the best generals and admirals to put at the top. But until now, never in my memory have those down in the ranks been given reason to believe that the political leadership is intentionally screwing up the chain of command by ensuring the best people are kept out of the top jobs. Or, rather, that a solitary individual on Capitol Hill is doing this to the U.S. military.

That person is Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.). He has frozen hundreds of nominations and promotions of senior military leaders to express his unhappiness over Defense Department abortion policies.

Tuberville should immediately stop holding the military chain of command hostage. That was also the message delivered by retired U.S. Adm. James Stavridis in a radio interview with me on Monday. Stavridis noted that Tuberville is famed in Alabama for running the Auburn University football program, adding, “but this is not a game.”

Two or more people. Yes.

There are a lot of people who will be indicted along with Trump. I also expect there to be unindicted coconspirators as well, including any of those who might have turned evidence on Trump.

DOJ has a summary of what that all means:

Section 242 of Title 18 makes it a crime for a person acting under color of any law to willfully deprive a person of a right or privilege protected by the Constitution or laws of the United States.
For the purpose of Section 242, acts under “color of law” include acts not only done by federal, state, or local officials within their lawful authority, but also acts done beyond the bounds of that official’s lawful authority, if the acts are done while the official is purporting to or pretending to act in the performance of his/her official duties. Persons acting under color of law within the meaning of this statute include police officers, prisons guards and other law enforcement officials, as well as judges, care providers in public health facilities, and others who are acting as public officials. It is not necessary that the crime be motivated by animus toward the race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin of the victim.

The offense is punishable by a range of imprisonment up to a life term, or the death penalty, depending upon the circumstances of the crime, and the resulting injury, if any.

Deprivation of rights - seems pretty obvious
Under color of law - As an official act of the state, i.e. “it is my government responsibility to deprive you of your rights” (no it isn’t)

It’s a civil rights violation, obviously, but my question is what, exactly?

Just as an aside, I’m watching a bunch of Youtube videos.

Every real decent band has at least one _really_ good song in them. The lucky ones get a hit out of that song. I just watched “Deep Blue Something” sing a medley of their hit …

Deep Blue Something - Breakfast At Tiffany’s

and while it would be nice for them if they’d had more success, that song’s residuals will pay them more than they might realize for decades to come. Not a small thing.

Because he’s not special. He’s only more vocal than the rest in his intent to gain authoritarian power and to use it to punish and imprison his political enemies.

The GOP are an authoritarian party and Trump is their standard bearer precisely because he is most vocal in advancing their racist and regressive agenda. There’s nothing conservative about any of it.

Again, for hundreds of years, by the principle thinkers of conservatism, the only goal of conservatism is power. Why they should have it and you should not.

It is exactly conservative. “Above the law” is a conservative position.

How do you report a Toot on Mastodon?

According to GitHub, the only way to report farts toots is to reach out to the administrator of your “instance” so that person can tell the owner of the other “instance,” or if you can, report it directly to the owner of the originating “instance.”

St. Augustine justified Lying for Jesus in a rebuttal to Publius Consentious’s book against lying, saying it was vital to save people from Hell.

No one has ever heard of Consentious, but St. Augustine was elevated to the position “Doctor of the Church.”

In his foundational texts on Protestantism, Martin Luther also justified Lying for Jesus using the same logic.

Quick question for mac users - friend just called and her husband’s mac had some malware on it - their son was able to run malware bytes and clean it up. But now she’s not sure if his laptop is really clean (he’s got a brain tumor so he’s not super focused hence she reached out to me).

Are there any utilities I can recommend she run to help give her a little peace of mind? She’s already going and changing bank passwords and shit.

My rule of thumb, is once something has been compromised the only way to be sure is to nuke it from orbit and start over. Format and reinstall (unless you have a known good restore image)

At New College of Florida, a ‘ridiculously high’ number of faculty are gone

More than one-third of New College of Florida faculty will not be returning in the fall.

That’s according to Provost Bradley Thiessen, who called the 36 departures in a single year a “ridiculously high” number for a school with fewer than 100 full-time teachers.

I know that’s what DeSantis wanted to happen but students, who have invested time and money, are screwed. Not everyone can transfer (though I do wonder how many have).

That leaves students like Alaska Miller, a third-year cognitive science major, with few options. There are no upper-year neuroscience classes offered in the fall, she said. Until the school hires more faculty, it’s impossible for her to move forward with her degree.

“That means either I don’t graduate on time or I’d have to abandon my major,” Miller said. Switching to another field means giving up on her dream of pursuing a graduate degree in neuroscience, and she cannot afford to transfer to another school out of state.

re: #173 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

When I write a cheque in the store, I fill in all the parts I can when the order is being rung up. The only part to fill in is the amount.

Debit cards are slower anyway. (Is this the correct amount? X Do you want to add more money for charity? X Take this stylus and scrawl an illegible signature on the screen. Press OK. Register thinks about it. Bank computer’s down or the machine can’t read your card, purchase rejected. Do you have a different card?)

I never have to take a stylus and scrawl an illegible signature on the screen when I use my DEBIT card. I have occasionally had to when I use my credit cards, but even that is increasingly rare these days. And the card reader never asks me if I want to add money for charity: the cashier does when she’s ringing me up, and I politely tell her, “No,” and she continues ringing me up. The only thing the card readers here ask me when I use my debit card outside of my PIN is whether I want cash back or not and, again, I press “No.”

And in almost 30 years of regular debit card use, I can count the number of times the bank computer has been down on the fingers of one hand.

I regularly write only two checks a month (sometimes three) and I generally do not carry more than $60 worth of cash on me. (Usually, I carry only between $20-$40 that I can break in order to do laundry at the laundromat.)

Before 1994, I would write checks at the grocery store and prefill everything but the amount, but it takes me longer to write LEGIBLY something like “One hundred, thirty-seven and 59/100” than to pop in the card and enter my PIN and a simple “No” for the cash back option.
