Joe Lieberman is using ‘No Labels’ to get his revenge on the Democrats

salon.com

Back in April, I wrote about the potential sabotage of the 2024 presidential election at the hands of the centrist group No Labels. They were signaling that they planned to run a third-party “unity” ticket to satisfy the wishes of the majority of the public who are telling pollsters that they are unsatisfied with what looks to be a replay of the 2020 election. The group already gathered a lot of money, which they are not required to reveal because they claim they are not a political party (even though they are setting up affiliate groups in the states that are calling themselves parties.) They insist they are not trying to be spoilers, but that raises the question of what they are doing. If you ask them, they don’t seem to have any idea.

At the time I wrote that piece it was unclear if they were serious at all. There’s a lot of money to be made in organizing groups like this and the argument is tailormade to appeal to wealthy donors who yearn for things like “entitlement reform” (especially privatization of Social Security and Medicare) and what they call “common sense” solutions to difficult issues like climate change. But it’s not just about the money, that much is clear. The group has actually started holding events to sell their idea of a unity ticket.

On Monday, they hosted one in New Hampshire featuring everyone’s favorite Senate diva, Democrat Joe Manchin of West Virginia, along with a congenial bucket of warm water, former Republican Utah governor Jon Huntsman. They called their gathering a “Common Sense Townhall,” showing that they have a great sense of humor if nothing else. The GOP is going to run Donald Trump for president, a man who was twice impeached, tried to illegally overturn the election and is now looking at his third indictment in less than a year — and he’s polling very close to Joe Biden. The idea that it’s common sense for any Democrat or moderate Republican to run a third-party candidacy at a time when we are facing one of the most serious political challenges in our history is very dark comedy. There has never been a worse time to do something like this.

One thing is very clear: a No Labels ticket doesn’t have a prayer of winning. So once again, you have to wonder why they are doing it?

So what’s motivating this effort and Lieberman in particular? I think it’s what’s been motivating him ever since 2006 when progressives, tired of his endless centrist posturing, beat him in the primary at which point he became an Independent and never looked back. He caucused with the Democrats for the rest of his career but made it his mission to stab the progressive wing of the Democratic Party in the back whenever possible, most famously when he single-handedly killed the Public Option in the Affordable Care Act after supporting it for years.

BTW: I enjoyed Barbie but wasn’t expecting to. I expected campy and fantasy and it was, but there was lots of satire and commentary ladled with sharp-witted allegory. The reason I like it was why wingnuts hated it. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling really committed to their parts. I don’t know if I would consider it a musical, but there was a little musical-y parts, which is not my jam, but I found it fun and appropro.

I’ll see Barbie next week, but it’s my understanding from critic’s reviews that Ryan Gosling damn near stole the show. Seems he has quite the deft touch for comedy.

OceanGate’s CEO Stockton Rush was an ambitious entrepreneur with a fatal flaw.

With his plan to create a “SpaceX for the oceans,” Rush embodied Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” mantra, pushing innovation to the limits of safety.

Like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, he exhibited the confidence and hubris that is common among entrepreneurs who think the world doesn’t understand what they do, sources told Insider.

Rush was among the five passengers who died on OceanGate’s Titan submersible on June 18 after it imploded on a dive to see the Titanic shipwreck.

The incident came as a shock to the world, but for many industry experts, it was a disaster waiting to happen.

“Few of us ever have a fatal flaw and Rush did,” Arnie Weissmann, the editor in chief of Travel Weekly, told Insider. “He thought he was right or he wouldn’t have gotten in [the submersible] and piloted it, but that was a fatal flaw.”

Here are the No Labels (plutocratic GOP) ideas to address climate change:
- small, but escalating taxes on carbon energy sources, which will be passed on to consumers
- no support for green energy sources (because government ‘shouldn’t pick winners and losers,’ (but of course no mention of eliminating subsidies for petroleum)
- ‘getting out from under the burden of imported oil’ which means subsidizing domestic producers to produce even more

These Christians took preacher Robin D. Bullock seriously. Now they’re screwed.

open.substack.com

Robin D. Bullock is another one of those right-wing preachers whose clips evoke more laughter than fear. He’s claimed, among other things, that he saw a dinosaur in Heaven, that Jesus had five houses, and that God lives inside a cube of gelatin.

But Bullock makes plenty of political and theological statements, too, from his perch at Church International in Warrior, Alabama. So when he spreads conspiracy theories about President Joe Biden and COVID vaccines, and says God wants people to join his church, that message actually gets through to people who watch his services online.

Reporter Lee Hedgepeth recently published a truly disturbing article about one Ohio family—Jacob and Tammy Partlow and their two children—that literally sold their house to move closer to Bullock and his Alabama church. They discovered rather quickly, however, that Bullock functions as more of a cult leader who puts himself above God rather than a preacher who can convey biblical messages in an effective way. Once Bullock realized they weren’t interested in worshiping him, he effectively shunned the family, leaving them with nothing to show for their faith.

Now, the Partlows have found themselves rising to challenges made all the more difficult by their experience with the Warrior church. The family, which had been able to make ends meet in Ohio, has found it hard to get by in Alabama, a state whose social safety net has holes so large it’s easy to fall through. Tammy, for example, found out she suffers from multiple sclerosis (MS), a degenerative disease that has already made it difficult for her to walk. And the diagnosis, she said, has become a financial albatross in a state that has refused to expand Medicaid for low-income Alabamians.

The Partlows had stepped out in faith, they told Tread. Now, they’re struggling for food.

The Partlows, we’re told, saw Bullock’s services on YouTube and became hooked. They quickly became donors, giving the church “hundreds and hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars.”

During a recent trip to Florida, they stopped by the church and met Bullock, who told them God wanted them to move to Warrior. So they did. They began attending services in person. That’s when they realized Bullock wasn’t just preaching the Bible.

It’s such a depressing story. It’s not an isolated one either. In fact, Hedgepeth also reported on another woman who moved to Warrior a couple of months ago… only to find herself on the outs with Bullock. 82-year-old Janet Ndegwa moved to Alabama from Pomona, California all because she felt God was calling her to do that. Bullock literally urged viewers to do that in a sermon.

But when she arrived at Church International earlier this week, Ndegwa did not find the open arms she’d expected. Instead, as the sun set over Warrior, the 82-year-old curled up under a street lamp in front of the church with only the concrete to comfort her.

He’s stabbed them just under the ribcage, thrust upward and twisted the knife, while looking them straight in the eyes. Every time.

Word came from C&L management Wednesday that our own John Amato had been in a car accident. The email read, “Sounds like he was sandwiched between the Lexus on the right and some other bigass car on the left — Lexus hit him, and then he slammed on brakes and hit the guy on the left, jamming his knee in the process.”

While all of the staff here expressed worry and concern, we knew within an hour that Amato was in the hospital, stable, and having X-rays on his knee.

That’s when we thought about the old car. John’s old BMW is over 20 years old. As one staffer put it, “That’s the fear I live with. Old car from the 90s, please don’t hit me. Because anything will be a total.”

By 6 pm we heard from the man himself:

“The Beamer is dead. Just had my x-rays waiting in hospital room. My patella bone is split in half so I have to get surgery so they can put it back together. Love you guys”

Hunter Biden’s attorney files ethics complaint against Marjorie Taylor Greene for showing sexual images

thehill.com

Hunter Biden’s lawyer filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) Friday, requesting that an ethics watchdog “immediately” initiate a review of Greene’s conduct after she showed sexually explicit photos of Biden at a congressional hearing this week.

In a letter to the Office of Congressional Ethics (OCE), Biden attorney Abbe David Lowell slammed Greene’s actions as “abhorrent behavior that blatantly violates House Ethics rules and standards of official conduct.”

“Now more than ever, the House has a duty to make loud and clear that it does not endorse, condone, or agree with her outrageous, undignified conduct and brazen violations of the standards of official conduct that do not reflect creditably on the House of Representatives,” Lowell wrote.

The OCE is a non-partisan, independent entity previously established by the House that reviews allegations of misconduct involving lawmakers, officers and House staffers and, if warranted, refers matters to the Ethics Committee.

Greene and the OCE did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Authorities in Texas want to find out who stuffed a body inside a suitcase and left it on the side of a hill. The luggage was first spotted on Thursday by people who were feeding animals on the ranch in Bexar County, according to Sheriff Javier Salazar.

“There wasn’t really a whole lot of effort to hide the body, other than it was inside of a suitcase,” Salazar said during a briefing with reporters.

Authorities have not been able to identify the body.

“We don’t know anything about the gender of the remains or how long the remains have been out here,” Salazar said.

The attacks the RW launched against Bud Light for a benign ad campaign may have been responsible for the dip in stock value. DeSantis is vile and will definitely use the power of the government to crush any business that dissents from his Nazi outlook on the future of our nation.

Jason Aldean’s Pro-Lynching Video Pulled From Country Music Television On Account Of ‘Pro-Lynching’ (Wonkette, July 19, 2023)

Monday, CMT yanked the video for country music singer Jason Aldean’s gross new single, “Try That in a Small Town,” after a few days of collective open-mouthed horror at the offensive images and message.

Aldean’s label, Broken Bow Records/BMG, released the video Friday and it was in rotation on CMT through Sunday, presumably until someone actually watched it.

The video was almost comically offensive. Aldean appears in front of a Tennessee courthouse with the flag behind him. It is the US flag, not the Confederate, so that’s something at least. However, according to Ashton Pittman at the Mississippi Free Press, this is also the site “where a white lynch mob strung Henry Choate up at the Maury County Courthouse in Columbia, Tennessee, after dragging his body through the streets with a car in 1927. That’s where Aldean chose to sing about murdering people who don’t respect police.”

…DeSantis says that by signing up a trans influencer as a spokesperson, AB InBev (producer of Budweiser products) might have “breached legal duties owed to its shareholders.” Since Florida’s pension fund holds 682,000 shares of AB InBev stock, DeSantis says he wants the state’s pension fund manager to file suit. We don’t know if the pension fund manager (whose name is Ashbel C. Williams) can be fired by the Governor, but probably not. And if we’re right, then the pension fund manager isn’t going to spend 2 minutes considering this suggestion, since he’d be laughed out of court if he tried it.

A 59-year-old man in Ohio who is well-known for impersonating Mark Hamil’s Luke Skywalker character from “Star Wars” at local charity events was arrested this week on more than half a dozen criminal charges for allegedly trafficking child sexual abuse material online. John Stevens was taken into custody on Wednesday and charged with eight counts of pandering sexually oriented material involving a minor, court records reviewed by Law&Crime show.

According to a report from Cincinnati, Ohio, NBC affiliate WLWT, deputies with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office earlier this month received a tip from a watchdog organization regarding suspicious material being uploaded to the cloud. The case was taken over by the office’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Investigators with the task force were reportedly able to trace the IP address back to Stevens, who was later placed under arrest and booked into the Hamilton County Justice Center

Stevens appeared before a judge at the Hamilton County Courthouse on Thursday morning where Assistant Prosecuting Attorney David R. Wood asked the court to set a high bond amount for Stevens, citing the repugnant nature of the alleged material he uploaded.

from that same link above

Poll after poll after poll shows that voters, even Republican voters, don’t care about anti-wokeness, and largely don’t even know what it means. They like someone who “owns the libs,” yes, but it’s not the same thing. Donald Trump gets it, and he’s not even all that smart. At the same time, poll after poll shows that DeSantis is no threat to the former president, and that the gap is growing.

My daughter went to see the Barbie movie last night with her girlfriends and they laughed nonstop for 2 hours. I asked if she is taking her daughters (ages 10 & 6) and she said, “Oh no, there is too much adult stuff in there!”

I said “There is always some adult content in these movies but kids don’t notice it.”

That’s how it works in normal reality, the one we all inhabit.

In right wing alternate reality, a Trump trial on TV would be nonstop campaign ads for Republicans running against the “deep state”.

I think Hunter at kos describes DeSantis best:

Sweet merciful crap, has this guy ever had a moment of joy in his life? His every public appearance stinks of a man who’s still angry over being potty-trained as a toddler, a man who’s spent his whole life since that moment seething with resentment at his mom, and Big Toilet, and society at large. The man makes Hannibal Lecter look like a quirky free spirit…

we’re now seeing fresh reports about how DeSantis will be “rebooting” his campaign, just you wait and see. What will be the focus of this new reboot? Apparently the DeSantis camp has decided their candidate wasn’t enough of a preening fascist asshole, so they’re going to up his preening fascist asshole traits to “still mad about Bud Light” levels. Yeah, that’ll bring the voters in. What Republican voters really want is someone who can pivot from being super-duper mad at the Walt Disney Company to being super-duper mad about an international beer conglomerate.

Putin may have a few vulnerabilities in the Black Sea as well.

Even without shooting, there are insurance and major carrier declining to participate issues. Suddenly selling gets more expensive and delivery becomes less certain. Which could drop the price of Russian oil even further.

If there is shooting, a lot of Russian might have to go via a different route. Raising costs further.

From the Western position, allowing Russian oil onto the market keeps oil prices lower and reduces Saudi control. So that is okay. The goal is to ensure that Russia doesn’t benefit or make any money.

The debate about using nuclear bombs at the end of WWII has always seemed very simple to me.

IMO it was inevitable that nuclear weapons would be used in war, and the way the history worked out there were two (and only two) possibilities:

1) Limited use at the end of WWII.

2) Massive use at the start of WWIII.

For once, the better path was taken. One point I’m curious about (but have never researched) is that the argument here could have been made with full force in 1945. Are any of the relevant decision makers back then on record as thinking this way?

Republicans in office are actively and openly increasing misery in places they rule, because that misery can always be blamed on Democrats.

There’s remarkably little historical precedent for this level of propaganda in action.

E.g., I imagine even Nazi party loyalists in the 20s and early 30s would have had second thoughts if Hitler had made the WWI reparations issues objectively worse for Germany.

My understanding was that US Strategic planners looked at the option of invading the Japanese Islands. And calculated the cost at tens of millions of Japanese casualties and a million American casualties. And a required time frame of well over a year.

Versus forcing the Japanese surrender without invasion. Reducing the timeframe and the amount of casualties and destruction.

And decided for the second option.

As you point out, I suspect that the planners were secondarily worried about the plans of the Soviet Union after the German surrender. And were aware that using the Atomic bomb might consider the Russians to rethink any plans for going to war.

My father, in the American Army in Germany, noted that the Russians dug in, fortified and adopted a fairly warlike posture while facing his unit. When asked, my father told his superiors that “We could take them out.” Of course he also talked about getting so drunk with Russian and other American officers that when the partiers came to and drank a little water because they were dehydrated, they were immediately drunk again.

Plus, as long as the war continued, Japanese troops were raging across China, Korea, Indonesia, etc., killing a minimum of 10,000 civilians a day. Every day. When the Emperor surrendered and called those troops home, that stopped.
