Does it matter if it is a “minority”?

As if often pointed out, only a minority of American colonists were interested in fighting the British to no longer be colonies.

But the minority prevailed.

Pulled from wikipedia:

Between 40 and 45 percent of the white population in the Thirteen Colonies supported the Patriots’ cause, between 15 and 20 percent supported the Loyalists, and the remainder were neutral or kept a low profile.

So an absolute minority, but more than twice as many patriots as loyalists.

Answering the question from last thread as to why Hezbollah didn’t join in, apparently they did, at least in spirit, by launching some rocket attacks at the Shabaa Farms as a stated show of solidarity. Further evidence that they weren’t clued in beforehand and weren’t in any kind of real position to capitalize on the chaos.

OK.

If that person is American, I ask this: What’s your position on slavery of the blacks. 406 years of oppression, participated in by many whites. You meet a black person who knows these facts and hates you for them. Said person wants to settle accounts NOW.

What do you do?

Oh, not American? Canadian? First Nations just walked in. The Francophones have quite a grudge going and almost went to war 50 years ago.

I guarantee you that whatever country you came from, you were somebody’s oppressor. If Hamas is heroic and in the right, there really are no morals anymore except power. (Yes, Ghost of a Flea, I know I’m complicit…)

Last week, Anymouse posted a link to a list of all the rights people blindly sign away when hitting “Accept” on the various Terms of Service out there in the world. And I realized there’s no more of a perfect example of how people do such than the way this hotel company has their “Terms & Conditions” page set up. Guests are required during the check-in process to scroll down and digitally initial a set of statements before they can advance the page…yet the “Next” button is at the very top and is visible the moment the screen comes up. So what do people do every time? That’s right, they stamp the “Next” button without reading a thing because we’ve all been conditioned to view such things as standard boilerplate that aren’t worth reading.

And yes, every time that people come back to bitch at us about some “hidden fee” or being kicked out for a rule they broke, we have to print the damned thing and point out the part on the document they digitally verified they read before signing.

Is it just me, or has Youtube changed their pages again?

This time: when looking at the “Videos” page on a channel, I want to search for something.

Used to be, in the little magnifying glass in the menu within a channel, one could put in the string for which one wanted to search, and Youtube would give you the videos with that string (in the title or description) that are in that channel.

Today, though, when I try that Youtube seems to search all of Youtube for that string. That little magnifying glass is no longer limited in context to the channel in which one is browsing.

This is maddening.

Only recently, after many of us whined about the loss, did Youtube restore the ability to sort a channel’s videos by date of upload.

Now they have taken away the channel-context search function.

Sigh…

Yes, I discovered I had to do that.

But I shouldn’t have to.

If I’m searching inside a channel, shouldn’t it be obvious that I want results from that channel?

Up till now that is how Youtube search worked, it was not broken, but Youtube decide to just change it.

This is how things SHOULD work, but the big tech companies have decided that all-encompassing search is more important, because rather than finding what YOU want, they want you to find what THEY want - more stuff to get you sucked into their service.

We are having our own bug problem. The wine harvest happens earlier and earlier every year, while the first frosts arrive later.

Winemakers dump their pressed-out grapes back into the vineyards as fertilizers. This used to happen in late October, with the first frosts coming soon after.

But with the balmy, sunny Indian Summer weather we have been enjoying, the fruit flies are breeding in swarms and infesting everything.

One cannot leave any beverages (especially juice) out for any length of time without it getting covered by the little bastards.

re: #14 Sherlock Hound

I’m in Icht, Morocco.

I talk on here most of the time in terms of systems and abstractions: processes that are impersonal but have intimate impacts. Machines that maim but that we all rely on, that are the backdrop to living. I don’t deal in complicity most of the time…exceptions made for a few powerful players actively making the machine worse. We are awash in trans-personal phenomena that manifest as deeply personal acts of cruelty and I the only path I see forward is to try and address that larger machinery.

I really want people to question their axioms of how things work and how suffering is distributed, but it’s not about personal responsibility it’s about skepticism of a fully individualistic understanding of events, that things happen because there is perceptible causal flow from event to event that is not karma or punishment.

If I’ve written in a way that feels accusatory, I apologize.

I need to talk more like a human being on here. I drop a lot of theory mixed with hyperbolic wit but I tend to do a lot less emotional expression, and in that void I think I come across as strident.

I’m horrified by Hamas, I’ve been dreading this happening and now it’s here and I’m shaken. I hate every detail. Nay, there is no “deserves”
because there is no collective guilt.

I talk a lot about how the world is shaped by colonialism and its ripples, but I’m not a revanchist: you can’t fix the world through cathartic retaliation. It won’t work because it’s a continuation of existing power structures: same strategies different institutions. Organizations that sell revenge as a solution always end up at the same altar.

I’m mad at what abstractions make possible by inventing distinctions, and on this board I tend to write in a challenging way that dissolves or contradicts those things as they are present in the discourse. I’m presenting some deep leftist arguments because I think they’re useful clinical tools is diagnosing the base assumptions that keeps human beings spiralling through the same tragedies.

I write what I write because, emotionally, I desperately don’t want more suffering or trauma because it compounds over generations. I speak of history as autopsy rather than as funerary mourning because I intellectualize my grief, want to find some kernel of understanding such that violence could happen less, so that each person would have less suffering in a world which is dictated by distinctions useful for a few powerful institutions, but where the remainder is the trauma from those distinctions that become culturally.

My deepest condolences to anyone affected.

Like slavery. Active abolitionists were a minority while a lot of people in the North opposed the notion of slavery, but tolerated its existence in the South.

It was the issue of exporting slavery to the new territories and states that led to a conflict.

Another variant on how having the negative attention of local authority* is a lot worse for living one’s life than the attention of a more distant, though larger, federal authority. The former can make your life miserable on a consistent basis day-to-day via a large number of petty and not-so-petty legal and quasi-legal behaviors towards you. The latter is usually bound by much stiffer rules and procedures.

US newspaper claims Hiroshima bombing caused by ‘homosexual’ plane

The article reads “U.S. bomber, the Enola Homosexual, dropped the primary atomic weapon ever for use in wartime on Hiroshima at 8:15 a.m. on Aug. 6, 1945.

“The bombing, along side one other atomic assault on the town of Nagasaki two days later, are extensively credited with bringing the struggle within the Pacific to a swift conclusion.”

It is unclear whether the paper purposefully made the change, or if it was a mistake made by the reporter when writing the article.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Over the weekend, Hamas launched an all out offensive across the border from Gaza into Israel. Hundreds of Israelis are dead and thousands are injured. There are definitely hostages among the missing. How could such a thing happen?

I would posit that this is a failure/policy disaster on the order of Yom Kippur War in 1973.

The Israelis were either caught with their pants down and the vaunted security fence failed to stop anything from crossing the border, or the Israeli government knew an attack was imminent and did nothing to stop it or to preempt the attack because it would appear to the world to be too aggressive an we’ve see how Israel is viewed when they’re the aggressor as opposed to the victim of this kind of violence.

Either way you frame the failure, Bibi and his government is a disaster for Israel. They let it happen either way, and they have no answer for the violence, except to respond in kind. The right wingers will insist on razing Gaza and killing everyone. Genocidal language is prevalent on both sides of the border.

In hindsight, the failures of the Yom Kippur War were not learned by Israel, and the Bibi government in particular. They got caught with their pants down, and are now mobilizing their military for a full on offensive against a guerilla army that is well entrenched, highly motivated, and has already succeeded in bloodying the Israelis in ways not seen since the war in Lebanon.

Meanwhile, my cousin who lives in Israel and her family are safe for now. Friends in our congregation have family over there and are apparently safe.

But I fear that this will not end well for Israelis or Gazans. Civilians on both sides are taking fearsome casualties and the leadership on both sides are pushing for more extreme solutions to the violence imposed by the other.

My take is that the civilians and moderates are the main losers of these events.

Another round of atrocities and revenge killings which the extremists will point to while demanding more killing.

I think it was a misstep by Hamas, especially with the massacre at the music concert since that will dominate in the Western press. (Though I think a lot miss that the fundamentalist side of Hamas considers itself at war with both Israel and the West.)

How this shakes out for Bibi and the conservatives in Israel remains to be seen. Yom Kippur War inferences about parallels implies that it will not be positive for them.

Reactions by various western politicians, mainly GOP, has been the expected brain dead rhetoric since apparently Joe Biden is some sort of world emperor with global agency and power.

reminds me a bit of A Bridge too Far, where the lieutenant asks the private where the captain is. “Dead, Sir.”
“I asked you where he is, not how he is.” At which point he proceeds to take his jeep behind enemy lines near the front in order to get his captain to a MASH unit, and then holds a surgeon at gunpoint until the surgeon acknowledges to his complete surprise that the captain is indeed still alive. Afterwards, of course, the surgeon gives a little lecture about how he has no choice but to have the lieutenant arrested, which he does and then directs the arresting soldier to keep him under arrest for 10 seconds, at a fast count. Best goddamned scene in that movie. Does go to show almost unthinking heroism under fire.

Whatever you do, do not let the doctor’s do a chemical ablation in your ears, because that will not only permanently stop any vertigo, but will make you deaf.

I’m lucky that any vertigo attack was brief, although there was one time when I was driving home and suffered a vertigo attack while driving. Thankfully, I pulled over to the right-hand lane and was able to make it home (my vehicle had lane assist, which worked wonders)

Short vertigo attacks can be problematic, long vertigo attacks may force people into chemical ablation (gentamycin) which causes loss of hearing.

Your ENT may do a intratympanic injection of a steroid, but the studies done to date does not show much, if not any, improvement.

If you keep having the spins, ask them if they are willing to prescribe a scopolamine patch behind the ear.

It’s always about him…

Trump rages after he drops off Forbes rich list: ‘Really dumb writers hit me hard!’

Donald Trump lashed out at Forbes after the magazine dropped him from its list of the 400 richest people in America.

The former president fell off the Forbes 400 after his estimated net worth dropped by more than $600 million from last year, thanks primarily to the failure of his Truth Social platform - where Trump raged Monday against the publication - and drooping property values in his real estate holdings.

“China owned (China Investment Corp, the Country’s Sovereign wealth Fund!), and very badly failing, Forbes ‘Magazine,’ which lost most of its relevance long ago, and which knows less about me than Stormy Daniels (who doesn’t know me at all!) or Rosie O’Donnell, took me off their Fake Forbes 400 list, just by a ‘whisker,’ even though they know that I should be high up on that now very dated and discredited ‘antique,’” Trump posted.

Trump fell $300 million short of the $2.6 billion cutoff for the list, which he first joined in 1982 after tricking a reporter into believing that he held a larger percentage of his father Fred Trump’s fortune. He previously fell off in 1990 when Forbes exposed problems in his debt-laden business, and he returned in 1996 and stayed there until 2021.

“They are working with the Racist and highly incompetent, job killing Attorney General of New York, Letitia ‘Peekaboo’ James, who has allowed Murder and Violent Crime in the State to hit epidemic levels,” Trump posted. “China owned Forbes is a participant in the Election Interference Scam, and after what I have done to China, with hundreds of billions of dollars being paid to the USA, who can blame them? For years Forbes has attacked me with really dumb writers assigned to hit me hard, and I am now up 60 Points on the Republicans, and beating Crooked Joe by a lot. So much for Forbes!”

McCarthy comeback? Former speaker says reinstating him would bring strength to US after attack on Israel

as if Matty Mattel Gaetz and the Magnificent Seven will allow that…

U.S. Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) says he is willing to return to his role as speaker of the House if members want him back, and says it would show strength in the U.S. after the attack on Israel.

“Well, right now, Mr. Speaker,” conservative talk show host Hugh Hewitt said to McCarthy on Monday, “Congress is paralyzed, because of course, eight Republicans joined with every Democrat to evict you from the Speaker’s chair last week. The Republicans meet tomorrow. If there is a deadlock, and I fear there might be, would you be willing to stand up and become the Speaker

“Look, the [House Republican] conference has to make that decision. I’m still a member. I’m going to continue to fight and act. I know what it means to have a strong America and a strong relationship with Israel,” McCarthy said. “From every term I’ve been in, I have led all the freshmen to Israel. My first trip as Speaker was to Israel to speak at the Knesset at the 75th anniversary of the creation of Israel. We need to not part in any way and show no weakness here. And we’ve got to understand that this is not an interaction like they’ve had before. This is something that hasn’t happened in 50 years.”

Pointing to the “eight Republicans brought you down,” Hewitt made a prediction: “I don’t know if they can change their mind, but I don’t think we’re going to get to a Speaker other than Kevin McCarthy this week, and we can’t not have a Speaker right now. Would you be willing to go back if those eight retreated?”

“Look, whatever the conference wants, I will do,” McCarthy continued, blasting his critics. “If you take some of their comments of why they did this, because I kept the government open? Could you imagine? They’re the ones that stopped appropriations bills from going forward. They’re the ones who voted against a continuing resolution that secured our border and cut spending. They’re the ones who wanted a government shutdown. We wouldn’t be paying our troops while we’re putting out a carrier strike fighter there, a 30,000 American men and women in our armed services in the Middle East wouldn’t be being paid right now? I mean, what weakness would we be at?”

McCarthy then attacked Democrats.

“So don’t just look to the eight,” he continued. “Also remember what the Democrats did. The Democrats made the same political decision that Matt Gaetz and Mace did. This is a Gaetz-Mace-Hakeem-Pelosi decision.”

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Monday that he is willing to resume serving as House speaker if enough of the Republicans who voted in favor of his ouster last week are open to his reinstatement.

And excise taxes and tariffs were a pretty important income source for the federal government for a very long time. Pretty much what they were limited to until the 16th Amendment opened the door to income taxes. There were income taxes legislated a few times previously (1861-1872 and around 1894). And IIRC the latter one initiated a bunch of court cases challenging it.

Unfortunately, I believe you are correct here, in a much larger and more sinister way.

1. Iran is Russia’s ally and friend
2. Russia needed to interrupt & distract from their losing campaign in Ukraine
3. Already we see the effects of the Kremlin’s toxic messaging creeping its way into the right-wing echo chamber, to the effect of “Jews wouldn’t be getting killed if Biden hadn’t sent all the weapons to Ukraine!”

Mass deprivation will rally support in Gaza for Hamas, not make them rally to throw them out. The rhetoric to punish Gaza pretty much guaranteed it would be done, as well as claiming that supplying Gaza would be supplying Hamas - which reinforces the claim that it is collective guilt.

Which, of course, will reinforce the Hamas rhetoric that Israel only supplies these things due to external pressures and if the Palestinians act like compliant slaves and do not resist.

Trump Adopts ‘Fyre Festival Strategies’ in Fraud Case
politicalwire.com

Rolling Stone: “In the weeks leading up to the start of his $250 million civil fraud trial in New York, Donald Trump and his attorneys privately discussed how they believed defeat in this trial was preordained. Their best chance — and it wasn’t much, according to two sources familiar with the matter and another two people briefed on internal deliberations — would be to fight the case on appeal.”

“This belief led to the development of an approach to the case that centers around chaos and cacophony, rather than any attempt to win it on the merits. One person close to Trump describes it as the ‘Fyre Festival strategies.’”

“That approach — ‘let’s just do it and be legends,’ in the words of the festival’s founder — famously turned Fyre Fest into a scandal-riddled disaster. But Trump and his lawyers are hoping that their legal strategy in their ongoing courtroom “suicide mission” will score some political and public-relations points for Trump, kick up as much dirt as possible, enrage the judge, gratuitously trash some of the witnesses, and turn the process into a media circus.”

There’s a thunderstorm over the area, and the flashes of lightning are punctuated by JDAMs every so often, and you can see ammo depots burning and hear the rumble of distant explosions. And in the background, the ever-present, persistent sound of what I’m pretty damn sure are IDF spotter drones.

For decades, sharing a last name with an alum of a prestigious university was a surefire way to get a leg up in the college-admissions gantlet — especially if they were a big donor.

Since June, when the US Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in college admissions, a harsh spotlight has been cast on legacy admissions, especially at Harvard, which was a defendant in one of the cases.

Given how Harvard and other high-status schools have valued legacy students, it’s unlikely they will give up the practice easily, even with the Department of Education investigating the practice. These institutions say legacy admissions help foster relationships with alumni and promote an intergenerational community. But experts told me there is an underlying justification: money. Schools might believe that giving preference to children of alumni would prompt donations down the road.

That rationale, however, is coming under scrutiny. The explosion of endowments at elite colleges has allowed many forward-looking schools to drop their legacy preference with no signs of financial suffering. By clinging to legacy admissions, colleges are not only undermining claims of advancing equality but may be shooting themselves in the financial foot. By prioritizing the children of alumni, they’re casting aside a more diverse pool of qualified applicants who may be even more apt to donate down the line.

“Legacy harms almost all Americans unless you are legacy,” James Murphy, the deputy director of higher-education policy at nonprofit Education Reform Now — which advocates for equality in education — told me. “And who’s a legacy? It’s a benefit that goes to the wealthiest people in the country and harms everybody else. So why do we even have it at this point?”

RFK Jr’s presidential run denounced by four of his own siblings

Conspiracy theorist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. this week formally announced he would be running for the presidency as an independent — and some members of his own family took the unusual step of formally denouncing him.

In a statement released on Monday, RFK Jr. siblings Rory Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Joseph P. Kennedy II, and Kathleen Kennedy Townsend condemned their brother’s presidential run, which they said ran contrary to their own political values.

“The decision of our brother Bobby to run as a third party candidate against Joe Biden is a dangerous decision for our country,” they wrote. “Bobby might share the same name as our father, but he does not share the same values, vision or judgement. Today’s announcement is deeply saddening for us. We denounce his candidacy and believe it to be perilous for our country.”

That makes sense. Iran is the top supplier of weapons to Hamas, and also an ardent propaganda asset, but that is not the same as being involved in the planning and execution of the terrorist rampage. Given the extreme requirement for opsec, Hamas would certainly not have risked bringing in the Iranians. Iran’s actual collusion in anti-Israel operations would probably be limited to their fellow Shia client (and front) Hezbollah.

They’re a terrorist organization, they don’t need to play by the rules of organized warfare. The problem is, everyone expects Israel to play by the rules of organized warfare, even when fighting these animals. (Not that I’m advocating for Israel to violate the laws of war or anything, but it’s for illustrative purposes.)

‘Women and children first… we’ll kill the militants later’ is a good way to squander that sympathy… fast.

It is, but Hamas gave Bibi the excuse he needs to wipe out the Palestinians. They didn’t stop the terrorists among them. If Mexico did this in Texas when Trump was President, we’d have been at war with Mexico.

And from how Hizbullah initially joined but stopped firing almost immediately, it would appear that they had no clue what Hamas was up to either. Hizbullah is also in no mood to test Israel at the moment, the way Hamas thinks they can. Lebanon is still reeling from the Beirut blast, a government that can’t provide basic services, and more conflict is the last thing Lebanese people want or need.

I know, it’s also the last thing Gazans need, but the leadership there thinks this is a good idea to kill hundreds of Israeli civilians and risk Israeli reprisals that could kill thousands (or tens of thousands).

Bibi and the Kahanists want to eliminate Gaza as a separate entity, just as surely as they want to eliminate the West Bank enclave. Bibi is getting the war he wants to distract from all the problems he faces domestically - trying to eradicate an independent judiciary, and shifting the government to the hard right.

Indeed. What would happen if the Mexicans fired 5000 rockets into El Paso and sent tjousands of terrorists across the border to rape, murder and mutilate? Within 48 hours, there would not be one brick standing on another or two boards left nailed together anywhere within 60 miles of the Mexican side of the border.
I remember MTG screeching that 30 or so M-1 tanks we were sending to Ukraine should be sent to the border instead. I responded that if Mexico launched an armored invasion, you would see a hell of a lot than 30 of our tanks at the border.
