Law • Views: 13,946

Donald Trump Jr. is expected to take the stand Wednesday in the New York civil fraud trial pitting his family and namesake company against New York Attorney General Letitia James. The former president’s eldest son is the first of four Trumps set to testify in the trial. Eric Trump, Ivanka Trump and their father Donald Trump are also expected to take the witness stand in the coming days. Seth Berenzweig, a defense and compliance attorney, joined CBS News to discuss the case.

For much of my life, a divorce rendered a man unelectible.

I don’t know how old you are but divorce wasn’t an issue for Reagan in 1980 having divorced in 1948.

He was forgiven for it because Jane Wyman had insisted on the divorce, against his wishes, and this was provable.

Like Victor Shi noted in his tweet, Trump is scared shitless knowing there’s nothing whatsoever he can do - and 75 posts in a single night is a pretty damn good indicator of that.

I was just barely born before Kennedy was assassinated. As for early memories, my earliest clear memory is in my Grandmother’s shack of a house, watching a black and white TV showing Bart Star to Max McGee in the (in?)famous pass in Superb Owl 1.

That many posts and I’d say he needs a tranquilizer. Probably of the “horse” variety. I was up half the night (really, I didn’t fall asleep until nearly 03:30) but I kinda have a reason for that. Still trying to sort out my feelings about mom passing. I’m going to be doing that for a long time. And then when I finally rolled into bed, my back spasmed and both of my knees locked up and hurt like crazy. I know it was psychosomatic but *wow*. Not sure what that means.

Being despicable is pretty much a requirement in the MAGA GOP to run for office. The only difference between extremists and “moderates” is that the moderates merely condone violent coup attempts, while the extremists support them.

Could also be something of a throwback to when marriages were social standing contracts and a lot less concerned about love but building family partnerships (almost feudalistic, so…) Yes, it makes no sense, but that’s the patriarchy for you…

Nice. A motion for a directed verdict is basically asking the court to rule that there is no substantive issue of fact that is worth wasting the jury’s time on. 14th amendment disqualification of Trump for insurrection is a perfect example of where this is appropriate.

Let’s hope the court does the right thing.

Edited: Looks like I misread it, and the defense is trying for a directed verdict. LOL. The prosecution should get the directed verdict.

I don’t think he’s off his rocker. His entire life he discovered he could lie and make the lie a reality. He’s just continuing on the same path, but with more urgency now since the people trying to stop him have deeper pockets than he does and he can’t just pay them off with a modest sum to make them go away, as he did with other settlements such as with Trump University.

And yeah: this is one legal morass he’s found (hopefully to his horror) that he can’t treat like his prior real-estate-related stuff: i.e., lawyer up, bury the oppo in paperwork, spin out the calendar for years, and finally wear out the plaintiffs to either drop the case out of desperation, or settle for chump-change just to be done with it (and forestall more years of appeals). In my personal opinion, without having done any legal research, because this is a civil, and not a criminal, case, I don’t believe that the standard to find a party engaged in criminal incitement of violence is appropriate. IMHO, if the evidence shows that it is more probable than not that Trump incited his mob to attack the Capitol for the purpose of disrupting the certification of Biden’s electoral victory, he should be barred from public office for engaging in insurrection.

Mike Johnson’s Theocratic Gay-Hating Lunatic Extremism VERY LOVING, Says Mike Johnson

MJ: “You better sit down any candidate who says they’re going to run for legislature and say, ‘I want to know what your worldview is. I want to know what, to know what you think about the Christian heritage of this country. I want to know what you think about God’s design for society. Have you even thought about that?’ If they hadn’t thought about it, you need to move on and find somebody who has…We have too many people in government who don’t know any of this stuff. They haven’t even thought about it.”

OK, Christian nationalist lunatic.

Don Jr. having fun in court today.

Trump Jr. seemed relaxed on the witness stand, as the AG’s office questioned about him about his professional background and his understanding of various financial terms related to real estate.

He said he was aware of what GAAP is — “generally accepted accounting principles. It was accounting 101 in the late 1990s” — but other than that, “I know nothing about GAAP.” He said he leaves details on matters like that to his accountants.

Trump Jr. also said he was not familiar with ASC — accounting standards codification — and whether it applied to the statements of financial condition he signed off on at the company. The judge then asked him if he had any understanding of it. “I have no understanding,” he said with a laugh.

It’s all well and good to let your morality guide you when it comes to making decisions of government. It is literal insanity to mandate that everyone must follow your specific interpretation of one specific religious text because you think that’s what the book is telling you to do.

93
Hecuba's daughter  Nov 1, 2023 • 1:21:47pm

After much consideration, my opinion is that the most consequential election for a 21st Century president was 2000, where the GOP riot successfully interfered with the process of counting the ballots, the GOP Supreme Court then stopped a recount in Florida, bad ballot design robbed Gore of a clear victory in Florida, and the “progressives” encouraged voting for 3rd party candidates.

All the evils that befell us since would likely have been avoided, including 9/11, since the Democrats would have been far more concerned about the warning of a Bin Laden attack. There were some good things Bush accomplished — Medicare Part D and the worldwide effort against AIDs — but the evils that he unleashed overwhelmed the positives. This all led to the forever wars, large budget deficits, and a Christo-fascist SCOTUS. We may never recover from the damage. The election of Trump in 2016 was the second most consequential election because it has put us on the potential fast-track for an autocracy aligned with Putin, powered by a cult worshipping this racist grifter.
