Going in for a colonoscopy tomorrow morning. Getting psyched for the ‘cleanse’ that I start in a few hours. Not going to sleep well tonight. This is the first one where I will get a light anesthetic. The other ones were with light sedation which made the process quite enjoyable. I was really loopy. Guess I talked too much so now they will just knock me out.

That is what I think also. The first time, they turned the monitor so I could see. They foundone polyp that I think I named Fanks and asked if I could keep him ;-)

To protect my kidneys, I take the 4 liters of GoLytely cleanse, starting at 7 tonight. 8 ounces every 15 minutes. Then spend the night on the toilet. SO much fun

I did the horse pills. 6 at night with a few liters of water and six more in the morning with another liter of water. I was like Captain Ahab hunting the white whale…Thar she blows! I’d shout from the bathroom because I want my wife to know what I’m going through.

Marjorie Taylor Greene slams abortion rights because forced births can ‘fill jobs’

rawstory.com

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) Wednesday suggested that pregnant women should be forced to give birth to “fill jobs” and solve the “population growth problem.”

Greene made the remarks during a House Oversight Committee hearing on immigration policy.

“Sitting in here earlier, I was listening to the discussion on jobs and that the whole reason claimed by my colleagues on the other side of the aisle is that they want to bring in as many illegal aliens as possible, give them amnesty so they can fill jobs in America,” Greene claimed. “And then they talked about that we have a population growth problem in the United States.”

“Well, I think we can all say that if maybe, perhaps, 63 million people weren’t murdered in the womb, we wouldn’t have a population growth problem, would we?” she asked. “That’s not women’s reproductive rights. That’s called abortion. It’s called murder.”

Greene blamed abortion rights for slowing population growth.

“But Democrats claim that we’ve got to replace Americans with illegal aliens to fill jobs,” she said, referring to the theory that immigrants are replacing white Americans.

“That’s their solution,” Greene complained. “And take away jobs from Americans.”

As I posted before the most rabid opponents of abortion are right wing Republican Xtian women...

Karma is just so naughty when it strikes, isn’t it Bridget?

Floridians Aren’t Letting Bridget Ziegler Forget Sex Scandal

thedailybeast.com

For close to three hours, the public comment period of this week’s Sarasota County School Board meeting focused on Ziegler and her refusal to step down.

Dozens of students, parents, and members of the LGBTQ community appeared at a Florida school board meeting Tuesday to once more demand the resignation of its most controversial member: Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler.

For close to three hours, the public comment period of the Sarasota County School Board meeting focused on Ziegler and her refusal to step down amid the hypocrisy exposed by her and her husband’s three-way sex scandal.

Several students spoke of the way her anti-LGBTQ rhetoric has made an impact on them and others in the district, with one teenager at the podium saying it was their “lifeline” to pretend to be straight, so they wouldn’t face harassment and hate speech.

Another 12-year-old student, who identified as queer and binary, said they were terrified the board, under Ziegler, would continue to pass policies making it harder for them to learn “because of who I am.”

More than a few residents also took aim at Ziegler’s anti-LGBTQ views and opposition to policies supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

“If this is your approach to education, then you are unfit to serve on any board,” John Smeallie, a retired deputy superintendent of Maryland schools, told Ziegler, before adding that she’s failed as a leader by “belittling” and “marginalizing” people who are LGBTQ-plus and “creating fear among students and staff who are part of this community.”

Smeallie then called Ziegler “a hypocrite of the worst order.”

“Despite your attacks on the LGTBQ-plus community, it would appear that you are a part of it. Certainly a B, maybe a plus,” Smeallie said to laughter.

One Sarasota resident, Sarah Kessler, read aloud the lyrics to Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” after fuming that Ziegler remained on the school board, “making it about yourself.”

Tuesday’s meeting was the second time parents and advocates confronted Ziegler at a public forum in the wake of her husband Christian’s criminal rape probe.

When Trumporrhoids talk about a “population growth problem” they mean A WHITE PEOPLE POPULATION PROBLEM.

Supposedly in the last couple of years there have been more babies of color born in the U.S. than “white” babies. And that is a problem for racists, not normal people.

NY Post: * Posts Click-bait article about a dangerous-lookin COVID-19 strain in a Chinese lab *
Commenters: This can’t be true - Community Notes, make this right!
Approved CN: This is false! It’s not a COVID-19 strain, but a different coronavirus.
Commenters: That’s not what we were worried about!

Am I the only one who finds it ridiculous? Seems to me it’s not the Community Notes folks’ job to do investigative reporting, and the only note that got approved was the one that showed the obvious error (Post just had to not include the ‘19’ part in the title).

Edit: looks like the notes all got removed a short while ago, including pending. Got a screenshot from earlier though.

Although it wasn’t called the holodeck, there, and it was operated manually from a console rather than by voice command.

TBH, most everything in TOS starships was controlled with actual buttons and switches; voice control of many ship’s functions didn’t really become a regular thing till TNG (with the exception of setting the Enterprise’s self-destruct in The Search for Spock)

Intolerable cruelty - ‘pro-family’ Republican demands children be kidnapped from their parents

A preview of a GP attack - Democrats are in favor of child trafickking because they do not want families separated at the border so that it can be determined that they are really famil. This was so far out for a lying MAGA that the conservatiove being interviewed laughed. But they are deadly serious.

Sure, let’s expend countless pixels, ink, and time on television breathlessly “debating” the meaning of 100,000 fucking MAGAt goobers putting Fuckface Von Clownstick’s name in a paper bag, in a state that sent Steve King to Congress for 18 fucking years. That [speaker] Johnson and so many other American evangelicals still support proud rapist/adulterer/racist/liar/bully/crook/traitor Trump further confirms what we already knew: their invocation of moral and religious values as the basis for their political views and actions is a shameless lie. They subordinate their so-called principles in favor of money and political clout, plain and simple.

The one positive aspect of all this is that their moral hypocrisy is now so obvious no one can fail to see it. They are a cancer on both Christianity and conservatism, and men of true principle when it comes to both recognized that long ago.

Never once had a snow day (primary school days 1987-2000), even when it snowed two feet overnight. Eagle County Schools in those days were prepared. Also the district was small, a few hundred kids per school on the buses, and the drivers were excellent (most of them it was a second job, they’re first job was ranching or diesel repair). In recent years there have been more snow days. More students (thousands need to be schlepped around now) and a dearth of good bus drivers.

We went 25 days with no snow at all. Sunny blue skies and cold nights. The snow that was on the ground during that 25 days now has the consistency of sugar. And it’s being piled on by several feet of snow.

And shit like this happens later in the winter.

Avalanche forecasters have a term for this, Deep Persistent Slab problem.

Fox News really wants that confrontation so they can exploit it for all it’s worth.

re: #140 piratedan

my question is, if you have a state governor that refuses to acknowledge Federal Authority, what recourse is there to make them comply?

Well, he could federalize the Texas Military Force (I believe all are covered under the same law that federalizes the National Guard) and order them out. Failure to follow a legal order and they get court martialed.

Federalize some National Guard (or the FBI) and set up a siege around the park, not letting anything/anyone in or out. Arrest those who try.

Yeah, I was counting on no rain on Monday, as I have a doctor’s appointment.

A week ago the long range forecast for the 22nd was for no rain… now, rain is expected.

But the NWS has also said there is quite a spread in the models, as for precip amount.

And being farther south, we might end up with either no rain, or more rain, than you up in LA.

Still, the long range forecast is for being mostly dry the rest of January.

State guards/militias that are outside the federal military command structure cannot be federalized as the National Guard can be (which is how Ike was able to take the Arkansas National Guard out of the Little Rock Central High School desegregation fight in 1957, by federalizing them and ordering them to stay in barracks while he called in the 101st Airborne under the Enforcement Acts to carry out SCOTUS’ desegregation order under Brown v. Board of Education); they are fully under the control of that state’s governor and military command structure.

The Texax Military forces are made up of Army National Guard, Air Force National Guard and the Texas State Guard. The article I read said it was the Texas National Guard that was doing this so I would expect they could be federalized. But yes, Texas does have a state militia outside Federal control it could mobilize.

The Feds are being allowed access to the boat ramp, which I thought would have been the most obvious interference with Federal agents. I wonder what would happen if they cut and took down the concertina wire blocking access?

I guess we will find out what the DOJ can do?

Part of me would love nothing better than for President Biden to federalize the TXNG (which would also happen to include Nicholas Moran, whose video I posted above, who is currently a lieutenant colonel in the TXNG’s 1st Armored Division’s HQ at Fort Bliss, IIRC, when not at his day job as director of militaria for wargaming.net). However, another part of me fears that, were federalization invoked, Governor Abbott, through his control of the TX State Guard, would mobilize the State Guard against the federalized TXNG (if they hadn’t been ordered to barracks, as Ike did in in Arkansas in 1957), Border Patrol, and Coast Guard down on the Rio Grande and turn it this into a literal Mexican standoff; the fucking media, especially Fox News, would be ecstatic.

I ran into the Texas State Guard during a assignment years ago for Hurricane Katrina. This was at the old Kelly AFB in San Antone, TX. At that time, the Texas State Guard was an honorary group composed of old, white men and were all Colonels. Never saw any other rank. Liked to parade around wearing fatigues.

The bunch I saw would not be very effective fighters.

Our busy-body guest came by earlier in the shift to inform me that she’d heard what she characterized as “child abuse” and wanted to know what I was going to do about it. I tried to tell her that unless I heard or witnessed it myself then there’s not much I can do, which she found insufficient so she decided to call the cops on the room. Cop showed up, spoke to the guest in the room, and then left in under 15 minutes. Since then, she’s been by the desk twice and called me just 10 minutes ago seeking my agreement that she totally heard some kids getting beat and the other guests in the room are covering for the one responsible.

SCOTUS Extremists Are Ready To Boot Important Regulation Precedent

The SCOTUS will likely release their decision in the middle of the Presidential campaign. And the Congress and the Judiciary have no ability to micromanage any of this. They are not experts yet this ruling would allow climate deniers the ability to stop all mitigations, anti-vaxxers to prrevent new vaccines and medicines.

Lawyers I’ve read have varying opinions on the doctrine of Chevron deference, but all agree that while the decision itself may not be correct, the idea that Congress and the courts can - or will - step in to replace the machinery of the administrative state is absurd. The end result is going to be the complete destruction of the centralized federal government, essentially bringing us back to the days of the Articles of Confederation.

I didn’t know writing a book was a prerequisite for getting elected to the Presidency.

A politician seen as a potential “replacement” for aging President Joe Biden is taking another, somewhat speedy, step onto the national stage by rushing out a book, Page Six is told.

Sources exclusively tell Page Six that Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has sold a book — usually seen as a prerequisite for anyone setting out to run for the highest office in the land — that is expected to be on shelves as soon as June.

A publishing insider told us that Whitmer, “just signed a big seven-figure book deal with Simon & Schuster, at auction, for a book to be rushed out as soon as possible.”

Whitmer’s deal comes as her name is increasingly being mentioned as a top-tier contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028 — or earlier, if President Biden’s health rapidly declines — a well-connected Democratic source told us.

Call the cops and tell them who you are. Don’t scream “I MUST DO SOMETHING!” and then quietly add “But I don’t want anybody mad at me.” Make the cop’s job easier by giving him 1 or more witnesses he can ask questions and get on the record. She put me on the spot because I already had to lie to the guest about what I knew as the alternative was getting him pissed off with her, but if the cop had come back from the room and asked if I knew who made the call, it could get my ass in trouble with the law to cover for her.

DNCC and Biden campaign should be running that as an ad that runs on a loop in every red state - the GOP doesn’t want to solve immigration. They want to break it and keep it broken.

again: there are too many parties who have an interest in keeping it broken. They want it to remain illegal but still ensure a steady supply of cheap, easily exploited labor.

No one saw child abuse, but she did hear noise. The situation should have been handled as a noise complaint. That would have stopped any kid beating for the night. It wouldn’t help the kid next Tuesday.

Sadly, it’s no different than if you walked by an apartment or a house and you heard the same thing. You can call the cops, you can make complaints, but unless they’re caught in the act then there’s not much that can be done to resolve the situation.

There is also the prevailing notion that adding cops to a situation is a good way to make it worse. A victimized kid’s best hope is an alert neighbor, teacher, or ER doc.

I think what I’m getting at is getting the cop involved really accomplished little more than if I’d gone and checked on the room myself. The conclusion that’s most kind to her is that she brought the abuse to the child to a halt for the night or possibly longer, but the less kind conclusion is she let her imagination run wild and not only falsely accused a 70 year old man of child abuse but also wasted police resources. For all I know, he had the TV turned up too loudly and she overhead a scene from a movie.

Seditious treasonweasel NY Rep Elise Stefanik is busy sucking up to Trump all while floating (and having the media float) the possibility of being his VP.

She’s repeatedly regurgitated the same venomous extremism Trump spews, including calling justly and properly convicted and sentenced 1/6 seditious treasonweasels hostages, and equating the 1/6 convicts with the Hamas held Israeli hostages.

This fucker should get thrown out of Congress for violating the 14th Amendment, and Rep. Dan Goldman introduced a resolution to censure Stefanik (which will go nowhere since the GOP holds a razor thin margin in the House).

Nice….I like this part…

Over at the other end of the Capitol, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has proactively killed the Lankford/Murphy bill, even before it is finished, saying it has to be his way or not at all. The senators aren’t taking him very seriously, though, and are still trying to put together a bill that can pass the Senate with a large bipartisan majority. Once that is done, they will confront Johnson with the fact that he can’t pass any bill that has a prayer in the Senate and maybe not even a prayer in the House since what the Freedom Caucus wants is not going to get any Democratic votes and maybe not all the votes of the Biden 17.

Some Republican senators are cautiously telling Johnson to pipe down. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said: “I understand the Speaker has got a very tough job and he’s got an unruly constituency of Republicans over there, but it makes no sense to me for us to do nothing when we might be able to make things better and stem the flow of humanity across the border for the next year.” (English translation: “Johnson, if no bill passes Congress it will be your fault.”) Sen. John Thune (R-SD), the #2 Republican in the Senate, said: “It’s not like you have somebody that you’ve worked through a lot of these types of battles in the past [with].” (English translation: “Johnson is a newbie and has no idea how things get done around here.”)

Various states will quickly threaten violence against other states. I am specifically talking about Texas at least threatening California for sure. Balkanization will happen quickly with some parts of states ripped off to join other states and direct paramilitary action against other states over trade routes and water rights.

This is not dystopian fever dream. Texas has already shown in real life what they want to do with concentration camps, military action against Federal authorities and human trafficking.

If you ever want to see what the Federalist Society has been all about this whole time just wait till Trump becomes Dictator on Day 1. Members including SCOTUS will crater to his every whim in order to keep reaping all that juicy billionaire gravy.

Trump’s #1 priority is to be popular. He is a self-absorbed populist, not beholden to traditional rhetoric from Federalist Society wonks. Trump will quickly, on a second-by second basis, issue EOs to counter mundane economic complaints from Trump’s Base esp about $30k pickup trucks, $2 gas, insurance rates, interest rates, etc etc. whether or not those EOs actually are followed through on a long term basis is doubtful, but the very public display of formerly-socialist edicts will prove very popular and Federalist Society cult members will quickly drop all pretense about free market ideology if it means the white man can retain all the power in the country.

DOJ report on the Uvalde mass shooting is a damning indictment of the local/state police response, where they didn’t enter the building for 77 minutes.

77 fucking minutes. Instead of acting as though it was an active shooter situation that it was, they treated it as a barricaded persons incident, and the immediacy of responding dropped off.

Officers had many opportunities as the 2022 school massacre in Uvalde, Texas, was still unfolding to reassess their flawed response to the shooting that left 19 children and two teachers dead, the US Justice Department concludes in a damning new report.

Bursts of gunfire, reports a teacher had been shot, then a desperate call from a student trapped with the gunman could - and should - all have prompted a drive to stop the bloodshed far sooner, the Critical Incident Review released Thursday says.

Instead, it took 77 minutes from when the 18-year-old shooter walked into Robb Elementary School until he was stopped. The carnage remains among the deadliest episodes in America’s ongoing scourge of campus shootings.

Critical failures in leadership among specific law enforcement officers who rushed to Robb Elementary are blamed by the Justice Department, whose 575-page report nearly 20 months after the massacre is the fullest official accounting of what happened, though much already was known largely through CNN investigation.

Despite the billions thrown at law enforcement to train and equip for these very scenarios, we see failure upon failure.

Measles outbreaks occurring despite easily obtainable vaccines.

We can thank Trump and antivaxxers for these outbreaks. Exemptions from vaccinations in kindergarten is at record levels. Outbreaks keep popping up where vaccination rates in the community dip, and herd immunity is breached.

About one in five people in the U.S. who get measles will be hospitalized. Measles can cause serious health complications especially in children younger than age 5 including ear infections, diarrhea, pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and even death, according to the CDC.

The first measles vaccine, a single-dose vaccine, was introduced in the U.S. in 1963. In the decade prior, there were three to four million cases annually, which led to 48,000 hospitalizations and 400 to 500 deaths.

The CDC recommends that people get two doses with the first dose at 12 to 15 months old and the second dose between ages 4 and 6. One dose is 93% effective and two doses are 97% effective.

Antivax misinformation has led to a rise in unvaccinated persons, and it means greater risk of infection for everyone in those communities.

Ending Chevron deference isn’t quite that radical. The FDA will still exist, but the Justices will have the power to overrule any decision they don’t like, unless the law Congress passed is explicit and leaves no room for interpretation. The Federalist Society likes this right now because they dominate the Court, but when the Court was more balanced they liked Chevron deference because it protected the decisions of regulators in GOP Administrations.

And Habba’s off to a rough start this morning with repeatedly being shut down by the judge after Carroll’s attorney raised objections to line of questioning.

Habba is asserting that Carroll doesn’t need the money, and that she was being treated as a liar before Trump’s claims, but those were objected for.

She attempted to admit more tweets into evidence, but the judge had had his fill. Each of the objections from Carroll’s lawyer ended in her favor.

Habba continued down the line of questioning to imply that Carroll, a relationship and advice columnist, was open to discussing sexually explicit topics. Each objection shut Habba down.

“But wait, haven’t they done that already? Mark Milley posed for a front-page spread in the Atlantic. John Kelly gave a statement to CNN. Others have back-channeled their grave misgivings, off the record, to Puck and Politico.”

Exactly. Although the Confederate Army was desperate for supplies, warehouses in Atlanta were brimming with equipment which the state was reserving for Georgia regiments only.

My favorite screwup of a Confederacy vs a Federation is with the telegraph. Lincoln called in the private owners of telegraph lines and they essentially volunteered the use of all their lines. Meanwhle, states did not fight stringing new lines across state boundaries.

The South did. As a consequence, the North had a military unit that strung over 10,000 miles of wire, some during battles, that allowed Lincoln to be a real time commander in chief, directing generals from DC. Lincoln and Grant used the telegraph to discuss Sherman marching to the sea. Sherman sent a telegraph to Lincoln when he succeeded.

Near instantaneous communication that the South could never compete with. Because each state was its own sovereign and could not be made to work for the common good.

Despite the billions thrown at law enforcement to train and equip for these very scenarios, we see failure upon failure.

From the report:

“For the span of more than 1 hour, between 11:37 a.m. and 12:49 p.m., there were at least 10 stimulus events, including at least six separate instances of gunfire totaling approximately 45 rounds in law enforcement officer presence, as well as officer injuries and the presence of victims. Any one of these events should have driven the law enforcement response to take steps to immediately stop the killing,” the report says.

It gets worse for Habba - losing 10 straight objections during her questioning of Carroll.

Did she strenuously object? Because it certainly looks that way.

This is what happens when you have a completely unqualified attorney engage in a trial situation. Not every attorney does trials, and it takes certain skills and judgments to make that work. Someone can be a great trial or appellate lawyer and suck at other things, and vice versa.

Habba is a real estate attorney who has never dealt with matters like defamation or trials before. Yet she’s leading Trump’s effort.

Trump’s definitely getting what he asked for. His judgment is sorely lacking. The delay tactics are failing, and his lawyers are dropping like flies.

the power and function of the administrative state landed in the executive and stayed there because it worked/works

if it didnt, it would have been abandoned long ago for something else.

we have three branches of government
if the exec is out, then the courts? - of course not. that’s not what they do

congress taking back the responsibility is the only other option.
that means a greatly expanded apparatus behind the 535.

it would have to wind up being the same kinds of people, experts, departments, etc. probably similar structure and function to the current one.

One thing that always comes to mind when I’m reading about Uvalde, similar incidents, and the militarization of the police is this quote from General Sir John Hackett

The essence of a soldier is not to kill but to die.

Soldiers die for something. At the very least for the people in their unit.

The militarized police only want to kill. So they rarely put their lives on the line. When they hear the shots they should be thinking, “I’ve got to stop that, even if it means I die. Those kids need me.”

Instead it’s, “I’m not risking my ass. Too bad about the kids.”

Uvalde report;

Among other problems with the emergency medical response the report identifies:

• “Law enforcement (was) moving injured kids in ways that were probably more harmful,” one responder told investigators;
• Due to communication problems, an ambulance drove past an available helicopter with medics and another traveled at least 15 minutes to get a patient on a flight to a hospital;
• EMS personnel brought one victim out on a stretcher to find their ambulance was missing after a crew from another agency had commandeered it;
• Several students with bullet wounds, grazes and other injuries were directed onto buses to a civic center without having been brought to medics’ attention.

A New York lawmaker wants the federal government to push a $14 trillion reparations measure.

The measure is touted by “Squad” member Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., who wants the federal government to be held accountable for slavery and the aftermath of it, according to the Journal News.

Bowman cited the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the “space race” endeavor as examples that would make the measure feasible.

“When COVID was destroying us, we invested in the American people in a way that kept the economy afloat,” said Bowman. “The government can invest the same way in reparations without raising taxes on anyone.”

“Where did the money come from?” Bowman said. “We spent it into existence.”

Bowman is among nine sponsors of H.R. 414, which seeks to establish that the US has “a moral and legal obligation to provide reparations for the enslavement of Africans and its lasting harm on the lives of millions of Black people in the United States.”

Does military training enable you to think of others when you are in danger, or is that a quality that one has that gets one in to military training?

Some of both I think. It tends to be there if you are the kind to volunteer but the training brings it out.

Uvalde motivated a lot of people to join Moms Demand Action (for gun sense in America), but not me. It wasn’t until some of the same bullshit happened a few months later at a white Christian school, I thought, ‘It wasn’t because they were brown in Uvalde, some people really don’t care who gets killed.’ Then I joined.

When the history of 2024 is written, DeSantis will earn the distinction of having run the single worst presidential campaign of the modern era. He had all of the money and all of the institutional support, yet he bungled every strategic and tactical decision. He could not manage his organization. He did not display a single moment of competence...

DeSantis’s entire political career is mostly smoke and mirrors. He first won office in 2012 in a district that went 57.7% for Romney (and he underperformed Romney by half a percent). He won the governor’s office by less than half a percent in 2018. And then won re-election against a terrible Democratic nominee (who used to be a Republican) in an election that saw turn out drop by about 10% and saw the Democratic Party of Florida just be utterly inept. And his approval ratings are underwater in Florida.

Also, it feels like everyone that supported him early never bothered to watch/listen to him give a speech. Dude has negative charisma.

there’s some theoretical advantage to hooking up with a well known and trusted brand name. and some more theoretical advantage if you are new to the industry. but having worked for a franchisee in undergrad and having represented some as a lawyer - I would never advise someone to be a franchisee (with the super rich exception above)

During a rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Donald Trump declared that corn is not a liquid. Trump dubbed corn ‘non-liquid gold’ and took credit for the new term.

Trump: And you know, we have more liquid gold and wealth under our feet than any other nation. We have more liquid gold(oil and gas). More liquid gold. Well, I just met non-liquid gold. You know where it was? Iowa. It’s called corn. They have. It’s not liquid. You have more non-liquid gold. They said, ‘What is that?’ I said corn; they said, ‘We love that idea.’ You know, it’s pretty cool thought, isn’t it? That’s a nickname in its own way. But we came up with a new word, a new couple of words for corn.

This isn’t the first time Trump has been easily impressed with something so simplistic. During a previous speech in New Hampshire, Trump delivered a bizarre rant suggesting he was the first person to notice ‘us’ and ‘U.S.’ were similar and that no one would give him credit for that ‘genius’ discovery.

Was in a local run coffee shop today in a town about seven miles south of me. They had a poster up along with a petition regarding the former employees of a 4-store coffee chain that used to be in the area. The employees voted to unionize and the chain promptly shut down all four of their stores. Citing, of course, their current inability to be profitable and indirectly blaming the employee demands. My personal suspicion is that the unionization was a response to the management trying to squeeze the employees and/or otherwise abusing them since collective action like that does not stem from a happy workplace.

re: #378 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

Was in a local run coffee shop today in a town about seven miles south of me. They had a poster up along with a petition regarding the former employees of a 4-store coffee chain that used to be in the area. The employees voted to unionize and the chain promptly shut down all four of their stores. Citing, of course, their current inability to be profitable and indirectly blaming the employee demands. My personal suspicion is that the unionization was a response to the management trying to squeeze the employees and/or otherwise abusing them since collective action like that does not stem from a happy workplace.

A lot of business models can only work if someone (or multiple someones) is/are exploited at some point in the process.

Capitalism. FUCK YEAH!

I thought that too.

re: #346 Dr Lizardo

It’s always the ones you most suspect. That photo just screams “creepy”.

It’s always a little discouraging when creepy criminals turn out to actually look like creepy criminals. Stephen “Nosferatu” Miller would be another example. It’s as though all that high minded and sometimes difficult stuff about avoiding stereotypes and generalizations has gone down in flames and the simpletons were right all along. Otoh, there are certainly simpletons who were fooled by these two, as well as by Miller and company, so maybe their perceptions are dumb after all.

I couldn’t imagine being on the front line at 50, let alone 60.

Only Ukrainian men aged between 27 and 60 can be mobilised by draft officers. Men aged between 18 and 26 can’t be drafted, though they can enlist voluntarily.

It’s a damn good thing they didn’t block Border Patrol from the school. The rest of Texas Law Enforcement would have waited for the shooter to fall asleep.

So it took the Feds to stop it because the state law enforcement was either totally incompetent or total cowards. Texans always talk a good game, but when it comes to doing what’s right, they can be relied on to do what’s wrong, at least those who support the GOP,

re: #388 Captain Ron

Known as Hunter’s “sugar brother,” Hollywood lawyer Kevin Morris was key in procuring income sources for Hunter from China and Ukraine, among others.

“Morris gave or loaned at least $4.9 million to cover back taxes and living expenses for the now-53-year-old Hunter, including doling out $875,000 for his novice art and allegedly purchasing his 10% stake in Chinese state-owned investment fund BHR Partners during Joe Biden’s first year in the White House,” the New York Post reported.

Republicans allege that Morris was motivated by politics rather than friendship, and his transactions with Hunter amount to an illegal campaign contribution. As evidence, they point to an email Morris wrote to accountants on Hunter’s behalf, telling them to speed up their work on tax issues to avoid “considerable risk personally and politically.”

Texas has spent a lot of money to train law enforcement to respond to active shooter situations. A lot of that day’s responders had the training in recent years. It’s (past) time to look at that training, see where it failed. The children’s training worked, and it was done by elementary school teachers. Now we know who to put in charge of the cops.

Hunter isn’t running for office, so how exactly is this a campaign contribution?

It isn’t.

It’s just projecting like IMAX all while Trump took millions from foreign nationals and agents, and profited from directing the US govt to spend hundreds of millions at Trump businesses.

GOP wont indict on those emoluments, but they think Hunter is the worst crisis to ever hit the nation.

Fuck the GOP.

I believe that they’re much more cynical than that, I think that Hunter is a means by which the GOP can rail on Joe Biden and nothing more. I think that they could actually give a shit about what he’s done, because its small potatoes and they know it. Just dragging it out to feed more crap to their base and try and blur the lines on what a decent person Biden is. He does have flaws, they are very human ones and he’s learned from a LOT of his mistakes and for some reason they absolutely hate the fact that the Dems have a bunch of these folks in their ranks because it brings into contrast what a complete misogynistic crime show that the GOP is.

It’s all those liberal communist cities using all the money. //

Seriously, though, probably 90% of that is being done in the metropolitan areas of DFW, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. I know that here in the DFW area, because the cities are close enough, large incidents end up utilizing resources from multiple jurisdictions. Because of that, there’s a training that happens I believe every year that involves responders from across the entire region to ensure that they can all function together.

The first year the event occurred, out at Love Field in Dallas, it showed how lousy communications between the responders would have been in a real emergency.

Specifically, most of the law enforcement from in and around Uvalde had received active shooter training. Including the ones who should have set up command and control. Trainers market their product to anyone who might pay for it.

OK then we shall deed Trump Tower to Ms. Carroll.

I live for the possibility that an investment group, led by Oprah and Dre, forms a “Dark Money” fund that buys Trump Tower and The Donald’s apartment for a decent price (rather than a dime on the dollar, he gets 12 cents), on the proviso that he be on hand to turn over the keys to his former property with a smile on his face.

And then on the day, the limo door opens up …

… and out pops Barack Obama. Smirking as he struts up to Trump to take away his home.

Exactly. Although the Confederate Army was desperate for supplies, warehouses in Atlanta were brimming with equipment which the state was reserving for Georgia regiments only.

Sherman’s army gained significantly in numbers during the March to the Sea, the result of local Unionists and freed PoWs joining up. Sherman was able to outfit them largelt from captured state stocks, including blue uniforms stockpiled before the war.
