The House is going to craft its own “bipartisan” foreign aid and border security bill. I am skeptical that it won’t be laden with poison pills or whether they can even craft a bill at all, but I guess we’ll see. It may be that the primary purpose of this announcement is to toss swing district Republicans a bone so that they don’t sign onto a discharge petition.

It’s to say spending starts in the House and if you don’t agree with what we wrote nothing will get passed.
And bipartisan means that both Greene and Boebert had input.
Bipartisan could also mean two partisans were involved.

Some people talk about discharge petitions as if they’re next to impossible to do, while others suggest it’s simple and why hasn’t it been done already?
So, for anyone who’s studied the issue in more depth - what does it actually require, and what’s the most significant roadblock at this point?

I just realized that the daughter of our cousin who was adopted out (long story) is turning 28 on February 29. Hunh.
You have me thinking of the Pirates of Penzance (Gilbert & Sullivan) plotline where the hero of the story has been apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. And when he reaches 21 he renounces the pirates and declares he will become a law abiding citizen.
Except it turns out he was born on February 29th so he has technically only had 5 birthdays. So he is still an apprentice.
Which leads to the question… Is she turning 28 or 7?

I like to look at it like this: it was a special election, so turnout was down. From 2022, GOP turn out was down 47%, Dems down only 28%. That’s a pretty big enthusiasm gap for an election so critical to retaining control of the House.

Remember too that the media and pundits love to proclaim that there’s an enthusiasm gap for Biden and that Democrats are on the losing side of that gap. Turns out that the claims are without substance as Democrats keep overperforming in the special elections, the midterms, and have more strength than they give themselves credit for.
Democrats have the law, facts, and reality on their side. They just need to GOTV and support Biden and Democrats on the issues - which favor Democrats. Even on immigration, Democrats can win because the GOP has decided to go full obstructionist and can’t and wont do any kind of border enforcement deal because Biden would be on the winning side of the issue. The GOP are saboteurs and obstructionists, and need to wreck government in order to stay in power.

The media isn’t really discussing it out loud, but the GQP desperately needed this special election. Not just for the seat or their majority, but because they are in desperate need of money and donors have little reason to give them any. I don’t doubt that more than one attempt to schmooze money out of their usual donors has been met with something to the effect of “If I wanted to pay for Trump’s legal fees, I’d just give the money to him directly.”

I expect the main effect of the redistricting will be fixing some of the godawful district maps gerrymandered around places like Rochester and Buffalo. I presume the district where Stefanik is around St Lawrence County and eastward into the Adirondacks will remain blocky like it currently is.

re: #42 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)
Blocky? Sure, but one could combine those districts and squeeze her out of a seat. The GOP benefited from the redistricting disaster in the state that favored the GOP and gave them control over Congress in the process.
The new maps may become available as soon as tomorrow afternoon, though it would still require the legislature to vote on the maps and the governor signing it into law. There’s a very tight timeline to get signatures for appearing on the ballots too.

If only 83% of those nutcases plan to vote for Trump, he’s toast.
Reminder:
1/6 Insurrection was a violent attack on the Capitol with intent to disrupt the certification and to do harm to members of Congress and the VP. It done so with widespread violence, firearms, and criminal intent from Trump on down.
Evidence of numerous firearms among January 6 perpetrators shows those claims to be false. A Mother Jones investigation drawing on public video footage, congressional testimony, and documents from more than a dozen federal criminal cases reveals that various Trump supporters descended on DC that day armed for battle with guns and other potentially lethal weapons. At least three people arrested in connection with the insurrection are facing charges for carrying firearms on Capitol grounds. At least eight others carried knives or tasers at the Capitol, including two defendants who allegedly committed assaults with tasers, according to FBI and court documents. Multiple others arrested downtown and in the vicinity of the Capitol had rifles, pistols, explosive materials, and large supplies of ammunition. And communications among numerous January 6 suspects detailed in court documents indicate that many of their fellow insurrectionists were armed with guns.

try buying something from Fender. They have legendarily bad quality, including managing to sell me 2 pro 2 strats once that both had exactly the same issue. the theory was they were same make and color, so likely just all the same bad batch off the line, which nobody caught. I just had to spend 14 bucks buying replacement screws for the back plate because while the American Vintage II ‘61 strat is glorious, it didn’t occur to anyone that with the tremolo bar spring-loaded in back, it takes the string-through holes off-center from the holes on the plate, which means the guitar can’t be restrung with the plate on, and yes, that is a massive pain in the ass. And of course I had the screws in a little bag that promptly got lost. (Why didn’t I keep the little screws in the bag in the hardcase? Who knows?) The person who sold me the screws, I am almost certain, was somebody high up in corporate, because they definitely did not sound like somebody making 10 bucks an hour answering the help line for a living. More like a regional manager in the engineering department who just happened to pick up the phone because he got tired of it ringing.

Unfortunately, it’s probably very unlikely that Elise Stefanik can be redistricted out: whatever the district boundaries, it’s still Upstate New York: where the skies are gray, the collars are blue, and the necks are red. It’s a pretty gritty region, and Stefanik has made a sort of national name for herself (a bad one, but her constituents are unlikely to care); so she would probably get reelected in any case.

re: #77 Scottish Dragon
Yeah, the investigation found that was reasonable on her part.
Yeah accept someone else’s assessment of a situation without actually identifying what and where you’re supposed to shoot
How about you assess the situation before firing
How about you assess whether the perceived threat to safety a minute ago is still there
How about you assess whether anyone’s life is actually in danger
A trained professional should be able to do that right quick, or else find other work
Ps. After firing all those bullets, and with no one firing back at them real time, they hit nothing.
They neutralized *nothing*

If someone had been shot, it would have just been excused as the officer thought he was in danger. In New York, that might have led to some type of compensation. In Florida, they just shouldn’t have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The squirrel has retained counsel. Of course that’s a long branch to climb.

So, the President of Poland think Ukraine is going to lose because America has abandoned Ukraine and is getting ready to grovel.
Thanks GQP.
I’m not a student of Polish politics. But as I understand it, the Polish President is from the Law and Order Party. (In Polish Prawo i Sprawiedliwość, or abbreviated, PiS.) PiS is a right wing populist party.
So yes, in theory, tfg would be a natural friend. If tfg understood the concept of friendship. And, if tfg had not already concluded that Putin had far more money than Poland could offer. For Duda (the Polish President) it’s would be a FAFO style learning experience.

A lot of Texans will appreciate it. Gov Abbot is another story.
His big gas donors pay the Texas GOP to keep this from happening.

He may have been hit by some high-speed plastic from the car he murdered.
We shouldn’t be so hard on the cop, it may very well have been an armor piercing acorn. He was pretty much defenseless.

Here in Mudville, my development has underground lines. It has significantly reduced the number of power outages created by trees falling down and taking out powerlines. Of course when the whole local grid went down after a derecho, power was out until the substations were brought back up.
And then there was the time lightening struck a tree, traveled down its roots and randomly fried random parts of an 8000 line phone cable in random spots over a 10 meter length.
It took the phone company a week to rewire most everything and get it back to mostly working again.
re: #78 Jay C
Unfortunately, it’s probably very unlikely that Elise Stefanik can be redistricted out: whatever the district boundaries, it’s still Upstate New York: where the skies are gray, the collars are blue, and the necks are red. It’s a pretty gritty region, and Stefanik has made a sort of national name for herself (a bad one, but her constituents are unlikely to care); so she would probably get reelected in any case.
Sad, really. But hey—she’s quite discerning about her endorsements. /
re: #88 ckkatz
I recently asked a ‘gun rights advocate’ how he would recognize the ‘bad guy’ in a shooting incident.
He didn’t answer, which told me all I needed to know. Specifically that they would be black.
re: #67 Belafon
Except it’s also following the pattern of every other special election.
The turnout — I just checked — was about the same ss any midterm election. Up to 2018 and 2022, for which anyone who lived through them will understand the reasons.

When I lived in a municipality with underground utilities we never lost power, I imagine if there is a mix of above ground and underground cabling then significant damage to the aboveground network could cause outages even on the underground segments, even if just due to sudden unbalanced loads at the generating plant.
re: #104 Captain Ron
Is this a scandal? If the sex worker is an adult and the relationship was consensual, it should be a non-issue beyond the typical Republican holier than thou hypocrisy.
re: #27 No Malarkey!
MAGAOP will protect him.
re: #35 A hollow voice says: Abort SCOTUS
There’s one the Senate drafted floating around that probably does what they want. Maybe they should take a look at it.
Bet you they will change the name of the Senate bill and submit it as their own, daring the Senate to sign it. And MAGA will try to take all the credit.
re: #78 Jay C
Democrats should still run a strong candidate against Stefanik. She’s not invincible and her opponent would have loads of ammunition.
So sad about the SB parade!!! I was stuck in traffic when they were running after suspects!
Horrific!!!
The Giffords shooting. There was a tackle, a concealed carry that stayed concealed, a folding chair. I thought I remembered another weapon on a civilian, but I was reading everything same-day, so there are some non-facts in my memory.
Half of a paragraph from the linked Wiki, behind a tag:
Loughner stopped to reload, but dropped the loaded magazine from his pocket to the sidewalk, from where bystander Patricia Maisch grabbed it.[32] Another bystander, Roger Salzgeber, clubbed the back of the assailant’s head with a folding chair, injuring his elbow in the process, representing the 14th injury.[33] Loughner was tackled to the ground by Bill Badger, a 74-year-old retired United States Army Colonel[34] who had also been shot himself. Loughner was further subdued by Maisch, Salzgeber and bystander Joseph Zamudio. Zamudio, a concealed weapon (CCW) permit holder, had a weapon on his person, but arrived after the shooting had stopped and did not draw his firearm.
I added the bold, which I think gives evidence of a difference between military training and civilian police training.

One may hope. Such a democratic talking point it would make….
re: #6 No Malarkey!
If this is what I heard about a couple of days ago, their ‘plan’ is to have Biden revoke IRS funding and a whole bunch of other spending cuts to pay for this ‘plan’ of theirs. They will claim that we can’t afford to spend any more money as we are too far in debt already and all the Democrats have to do is follow their simple plan and they will save the day.
IOW it’s not serious and a complete waste of time.

John Rogers coined the crazification factor at King Fu Monkey. In exciting news he is returning as the show runner for the third season of Leverage:Redemption which brings back all the originals except kinda substitutiing Noah Wylie (from Roger’s Librarians) instead of Hutton. And moving to Amazong Prime.

I wouldn’t trust anything they submitted. It would likely contain deceptive provisions designed to undermine the administration.

Yes. Not in all the episodes because of his other committments but he will be in several. And Elliot is also there.

I’ve shopped at that mall many times back in my days in PBG. We are so far from Mar-a-Lago. Closer to the rich folks at Jupiter Island.
