Well, this is something new to me.
My 15 year-old nephew has his first ever girlfriend and things have been steadily progressing.
He’s a smart kid, but obviously 15 year olds don’t always make smart decisions.
He doesn’t have the best relationship with his father, so his mother has asked me to have a man-to-man with him about certain important things now that he is having regular involvement with the opposite gender.
I’m not worried about it, it’s just uncharted parenting territory.

TL:DR - we are making some progress but will it be enough?
WRT per capita carbon emissions. We are not doing too badly
Here are the per capita CO2 emissions for many countries/regions. As you can see, per capita emission levels similar to Europe looks like it might be possible (5-7 million tonnes) . Even with China. We need to think of people living at EU levels not US/Canada, which I think that even the World Bank would be happy with.
And US/Canada per capita levels are dropping, a lot (this is likely what is freaking out the fossil fuek companies). In fact, their drop in emissions are keeping the overall carbon emissions growing very slowly, if at all, the last few years. (Compare rate of increase in 2000 to today)
We have a long way to go. But it the US can drop its per capita down to EU levels, which should be possible by 2040 at current trends, we may be able to level off total emissions.
Then we need to really accelerate methods for removing CO2 from the atmosphere and bring the overall levels down. Because even if we level off emissions, it is not likely that overall we will see atmospheric CO2 levels drop. There is a lag because GHG stay in the atmosphere for some time after emission. As we can see below, holding emissions at about today’s level (the yellow line) and then dropping to zero by 2100 (what I think may be the most likely scenario), we will still see CO2 levels rise to almost 50% more than today (to about 600 ppm).
Removing CO2 may may still not be enough. You can see that even getting to negative emissions by 2040 (the blue lines), we cannot get CO2 levels down to ‘normal’ levels until 2100.
We are still in trouble, but we have made some progress. Our great grandchildren will be the final judges.

Probably a good thought. We didn’t think about it in 1979~1982 and I later learned our luck had more to do with my case of measles at age 4 than anything else. Does nasty things to male fertility. Neither set of parents would have been stupid about it in our case but we still didn’t need the headaches.

Absolutely right. We have already fucked things up and they cannot be unfucked. But I was surprised at how much the global per capita emissions are leveling off without any real authoritarian global push. Individual efforts are having an impact, particularly in the US. Green energy costs are dropping so fast. This is one reason we need to destroy the GOP who are hell bent on changing these trends.
Because if we do not keep fighting, global emissions will drop only because there are less ‘capita’ than today.

I’m hoping the Biden plan wrt fossil fuels is to undercut OPEC and others, allowing our Green energy policies to eventually overwhelm them. Nobody now produces more crude oil than the US. No other country, not even the Saudis can produce 13 million barrels per day. I’d expect this to reduce the global effects of the OPEC cartel, which is good, as our production levels are greater than our consumption.
Under Biden, for the first time, we are a net exporter of all petroleum products. This puts even more pressure on the Saudis and lessens their leverage. Biden wants the Saudis off of oil and has an economic plan to do just that, Something they have signed onto.
So, if he can get that overall plan accomplished, it creates an easy path for the US to just slow producing oil, but at a rate that does not hurt other countries.
And since 70% of the oil produced goes to driving ICE, Biden’s movement of the US to EV should have a positive effect here.
We shall see.

You are right. I was trying to only the oil we refine and export but yeah, there is a huge amount of obfuscation going on all the time even with legitimate sources (ie barrels of oil vs BTU).
I was simply suggesting that the increase in US oil production may be to create a better transition to green energy, one with less price dislocations, than relying on OPEC’s choices. As green continues to rise, we can control global oil production easier by ourselves. It is a thought.

That’s a good point about the dark money ocean. However, that ocean may become quite shallow if it starts to look like the Republicans are gonna lose, and lose badly.

What, aside from pasta noodles, could be more quintessentially Italian than pizza? We all know the basic formulation: a thin base of wheat dough, a smearing of tomato sauce, cheese on top of that, and then a few choice morsels scattered across the cheese: perhaps ham, olives, or thin slices of sausage. A great many people therefore insist that putting pineapple on a pizza is sacrilege, an offense against gastronomy and a sure sign the offender lacks any understanding of authenticity.

Which is hilarious, because pizza itself is a recent invention and in no way authentically “Italian” at all. The tomato base is only possible because tomatoes came from the New World during the great Age of Discovery when wooden ships explored the globe and brought back amazing things like saffron, potatoes, and tomatoes. As for the other supposedly “authentic” Italian dishes, we need only remember that pasta noodles arose because travelers like Marco Polo brought back tales of the rice noodles found in Asia. Lacking rice, Europeans used what they had available (wheat) and so by this roundabout route we eventually get Spaghetti a la Bolognese, the primary ingredients of which (noodles and tomatoes) aren’t Italian at all. The same goes for that other supposedly quintessential Italian dish, rissoto. Rice, like the concept of noodles, came from Asia. And the saffron with which many rissotos are enhanced (along with Spanish pallella) comes likewise from the East.

Alas, we will not do so for our brains are not evolved to perform thinking tasks. In fact, the situation is quite the opposite because during 99% of our evolutionary history calories were scarce and uncertain and so our behavioral repertoire is adapted to these conditions. Any attempt at thinking requires the utilization of too many calories, and for nearly all of our past such calories were needed to power our muscles instead. Thus we will continue to blindly obey “rules” because we imagine them to be immutable rather than transient and arbitrary and because we imagine they will “keep us safe” despite all too often there being clear evidence to the contrary.
It turns out that when we stop to look at the origins of many of our supposed “rules” we find not reason and order but arbitrary invention and unsupported assertion. Speakers of English, like speakers of all languages, naturally worry about comprehensibility. Language exists primarily to convey information and only secondarily as a means to send signals regarding one’s place in society. Getting these priorities the wrong way around leads to well-meaning but utterly moronic actions like inventing and then promoting Eubonics or pretending that ghetto slang is “equally valid” compared to Standard English. Given that much of our modern-day communication prior to the invention of the Internet and its endless short-form content used to be via the written word, it’s natural therefore that we’d be concerned about spelling.
Alas, spelling has always been, and always will be, in flux. Indeed, much contemporary English spelling is the result of a ludicrous imposition made by a few dunderheads whose enthusiasm for the newly rediscovered Classical Greek texts in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries led them to impose Greek conventions on the fundamentally Germanic language we know as English. This is why, for example, we see ph replace f in certain words (like phonetic). An obsession with Greek and Latin also led to the tiresome claim that one should not split infinitives in English despite the fact in English the infinitive is generally formed by means of a conjunction of a preposition (to) and a verb (run). In Greek and Latin, as with many of the languages that evolved from Latin (French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian), the infinitive is a single unit (courir, derived from the Latin curr). Thus we have supposed “purists” claiming that the famous opening voiceover in the childrens’ TV series Star Trek is “wrong” and one should not ever try “to boldly go” anywhere. In reality, English infinitives are frequently split in order for the sentence either to flow more easily or for its meaning to be made more clear.
There’s obviously more, and some his points fall flat, but pineapple on pizza wars forever.

The union I belong to is a little weird. They are in favor of the Kroger buy out of Albertsons. They like the planned sell-off of many northwest stores to a different company.
Another weird thing they did was gather enough signatures to have a recall election on a state rep. The rep was supported by a lot of other unions, and won the recall election with more than 90% of the vote.
Last time I was a member, the local rep came and introduced himself right away. This time, I’ve not seen her. And we no longer have a shop steward, that I know of. (The old rep was from my store originally, so not a fair comparison.)

My Dad reminded me that I was there at the meeting with the WF bank manager eight years ago when he added his savings account, because was a prerequisite of getting the line of credit he wanted at the time to avoid exceeding his RMD over the holidays. That manager made all kinds of nice smalltalk about guns (it’s long established that I come from weird gun people and to an embarrassing extent am one) and didn’t mention one fucking goddamned thing about the POD. No attempt was made to transfer over the beneficiary line from his pre-existing, linked, checking account. Meaning the account he dumps his entire RMD into every January would have been locked up in probate if he’d died immediately after.
And the kicker is the ONLY way to have known that is to have known that the absence of a POD line below his name on the Savings account monthly statement he has almost no reason to ever look at meant there was no beneficiary attached to that account.

My parents were from the old country and didn’t take Identification management seriously. So nearly every early 2000 era document had errors

I have to publicly declare that this was not the case in my family. My wonderful sister who, because she lived much closer to my parents, took on most of the work handling affairs with my parents as they got older including arranging nursing home care and funerals. She had every right to feel entitled to extra compensation (and deserved it too).
About a year after my father passed, she mentioned that she wanted to close the joint checking account he and her had set up to handle his payments. I told her to just keep it, thinking it’s only a checking account and it was all legally hers because it was a joint account, but she insisted on splitting it. Turned out to be a rather substantial amount more than I expected. A less sweet, wonderful sister wouldn’t even have mentioned it.

I’m no longer surprised/shocked by peoples’ political choices these days: MHO is that Kennedy is a fringe crank who shouldn’t get more than a couple of thousand votes (if that) - but (sadly, unsurprisingly) he keeps getting talked up by the media as something like a viable third-party spoiler. I’m pretty sure I read somewhere that a remake was planned, but it’s been stuck forever in development hell.
OTOH, I’d love to see a remake of The Black Hole - but this time, as a sci-fi/horror film. Drop the silly kiddie elements and thematically speaking, lean into Event Horizon.
I’d keep the design of the U.S.S. Cygnus pretty much the same, the robot Maximillian is iconic, so no changes there, and for the role of Dr. Reinhart, I’d like to get Christoph Waltz.

It was Radio City, which seats 6,500.Though I’m pretty sure this lineup could sell out MSG pretty easily if they wanted to book it; maybe later in the year. They wouldn’t even have to add Springsteen to the lineup to fill the place, if they add him they could sell out Yankee Stadium.
Or they could go west — the Los Angeles Coliseum holds 77,500; Dodger Stadium holds 56,000; the Rose Bowl holds 89,700.
Sure they could fill those venues, but the real test is…could they draw a crowd to Four Seasons Landscaping?
