James Taylor: “Angels of Fenway”

Music • Views: 13,671

One of the greatest songs ever written about baseball.

James Taylor’s tribute to the @redsox from the 2015 album “Before This World.”

LYRICS
86 summers gone by
Bambino put a hex on the Bean
We were livin’ on a tear and a sigh
In the shadow of the Bronx machine

Man, you could feel it smolder
Whole town had an attitude
Tend to get a little chip on your shoulder
Say something that’s downright rude

Damn them Yankees
Outspending everybody 2 to 1
Picking up on the cream of the crop
Stealing everyone’s favorite son

Angels of Fenway – hear our prayer
We have been chastened
We have been patient

Grandmama was a Fenway fan
Even after grandad died
I still remember her holding my hand
Takin’ me along for the ride
She was born in 1918
Last year that the Red Sox won
Back then when they sold the Babe
Something that they never should have
Ever have done

“Hey Nanna can I have another Coke
Here comes the hot dog man
Look at that! His bat just broke
Gee, that’s got to kill his hand”

Riding home on the Green Line
Watching the town go by
Nanna made another Red Sox fan
‘Til the day I die

That was back in ’65
Doesn’t seem like a long time ago
Grandmama keeping hope alive
Watched them win in ‘004

Oh my god, it was beyond belief
Down 3 needing 4 in a row
Holding on by the skin of our teeth
Like a hungry dog on a bone

Angels of Fenway – give them peace
They have been patient
Red Sox Nation

The whole world held its breath
People got down on their knees
Ready for the sudden death
Praying to heaven for hell to freeze

Nanna watched from her hospital bed
She was there ’til the end of the race
I couldn’t hear the last words she said
But she was lying there with a smile on her face

Just a little smile on her face
Doesn’t feel like a long time ago

I think my favorite song about baseball would have to be John Fogerty’s Centerfield.

I made cake today:

recipe:
French Apple Cake

Ingredients
Cooking spray
1 1/4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
2 large eggs
1/2 c. (1 stick) butter, melted and cooled
3/4 c. plus 1 tbsp. granulated sugar, divided
3 tbsp. dark rum
1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
3 medium sweet-tart apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped

Directions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350° with a rack in the middle position; lightly coat an 8” round cake pan with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
Step 2
In a large bowl, whisk eggs until foamy. Add melted butter, 3/4 cup sugar, rum, and vanilla and whisk to combine. Add dry ingredients and stir with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until evenly incorporated. Fold in apples. Transfer batter to prepared pan. Sprinkle top with remaining 1 tablespoon sugar.
Step 3
Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean, about 55 minutes. Let cool 15 minutes before inverting onto a cooling rack to cool completely.

All the updings for Angels of Fenway—not only the song but the video as well. I play it about once a week for smiles. My favorite line is “praying to heaven for hell to freeze ” which so well captures the 2004 Sox/Yankees series.

I tell the tale that my Boston born and raised parents were born in 1919 and died in the late 1980s, so lived their whole lives without seeing a Red Sox world series won

Maybe but there are also 5 jurors who are either lawyers or have family members who are lawyers. They might be able to keep the jury from running away. They might also be able to tell a judge that a juror lied to get on the jury and get an alternate to replace.

This song could have been written about my Nana. Red Sox fan her whole life. Listened to every game on the radio. Made the several trips to Fenway Park every year. Knew all the stats about every player on the roster every year.

Unfortunately she passed away in 1962 and never saw them win the world Series.

When I was in Jr High, the local Chevy dealer had the Town’s school bus contract. In appreciation, every summer he would buy a block of tickets to a Red Sox game and invite any student who wanted to go to the game. This included parents if they would help usher the kids. He also provided each person with a ticket for a hot dog and soda.

It was always a fun day. I even got to see Ted Williams hit a game winning home run over the Green Monster.

It’s a testament to Ukraine’s resolve and fortitude that they have managed to hold the line this long despite deliberate efforts by the GQP to sabotage the war effort. Assholes who are deliberately holding up funding not because they have some ideological opposition to the war or “better” plan, but because they genuinely believe that they will score brownie points with a certain branch of voter if the war effort ends in a Russian victory of one degree or another.

[Take Me Out to the Ball Game]

My father was a devoted member of Barbershoppers, singing lead tenor in a regional chorus and in quartets. He had outfits and hats, and wore makeup, and had a wonderful time. His devoted family (wife and two children) toughed out a lot of rehearsals and concerts, but the one quartet that we always loved my father did not belong to. Their specialty song was Take Me Out to the Ball Game, but after a slightly confused start, they would sing the whole thing one syllable ahead of the proper wording. They had a great set of expressions as they kept trying to get back with the music, but always failing. I used to be able to sing it, even being unable to sing it correctly after a time. But now, years later, I can’t seem to get started on it “wrongly”. Ah, the memories!

I will not celebrate until the foreign aid packages pass the Senate. Given the GOP allegiance to Trump and the way he torpedoed the immigration legislation, I retain the concern that Senate Republicans who previously supported the bills will suddenly show their cowardice again and do a 180. At this point, I suspect most of the moves left are parliamentary in nature, that they’ll follow the usual script: first try to delay it however they can, then they try to poison it with amendments, then trying to scare enough votes against it to sustain a filibuster.

just having a bit of fun

i was on the road for weeks and months at a time in all kinds of weather.
i had a 6 man domed tent, in case i was stuck inside for an extended period of rain
i needed to carry food - dry and cooled, a one burner stove, etc.
clothes, of course, plus rain gear.
and a sub-compact laptop computer (1992!)

pre-trailer it was awkward. way overloaded and top heavy.

i fell over from a standing position /not moving. my leg just gave out. somewhat gracefully it kind of eased over like a horse going to lay down. i needed help to pick it up.

happened one more time and that was it.

the trailer has an ice chest on the neck. upped my cuisine game.
i could carry a snowmobile suit so my range increased dramatically too. plus frivolities. books, more camping comforts etc.

i love being on the road

Are there any considerations for new Nuclear plants there?

Two EPR1600 reactors are being built at Hinkley at the moment but their capacity (3.2GW total) isn’t going to replace the capacity of the existing Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGRs) as they are all heading for shutdown and decommissioning over the next five to ten years with some of them already in decommission at the moment. There’s a single 1100MW PWR that was built in the 1980s that’s good for maybe another forty years or so depending on licencing and upgrades. The plan was to build more of them using the skillset acquired from its construction but instead there was a “dash for gas”.

There are advanced plans to build two more EPR1600s plus some blue-sky PowerPoint presentations about small modular reactors and magical thorium designs but nothing shovel-ready, never mind poured concrete and bent metal. Mostly it’s being kicked down the road into the future for other people to deal with.

Ain’t that a shame! The Jesusbots fail to put an abortion ban on the Colorado ballot!

Colorado organizers fail to gather enough signatures to put anti-abortion measure on the ballot

Colorado organizers who sought to put an anti-abortion initiative on the ballot this November failed to gather enough signatures in time to qualify.

The proposed measure from the Colorado Life Initiative sought to declare “a living human child must not be intentionally dismembered, mutilated, poisoned, scalded, starved, stabbed, given toxic injections known to cause death, left to die of the elements for lack of warmth or nutrition, used for experimentation, or treated in any way inhumanely to cause intentional physical harm leading to intended death or intended to cause disability to otherwise healthy and functioning parts of the body of a child.”

For the purposes of the group’s initiative, a “living human child” exists “from the moment human life biologically begins at conception,” according to its website.

The group needed to collect 124,238 signatures by the April 18 deadline. Faye Barnhart, co-sponsor of the measure, told CBS News that the group had collected “tens of thousands of signatures,” but fell short.

In a press release, the Colorado Life Initiative blamed abortion opponents they deemed “ProLife In Name Only” — even calling them “PLINOs” — as well as insufficient publicity and recruitment for its failure to obtain enough valid signatures.

Or maybe - just hear me out on this - your policy is so unpopular that nobody, not even your rabid right-wing evangelical buddies, wants to bring it to a vote. Funny how abortion bans don’t make it on ballot initiatives, but amendments to protect the right to an abortion do.

This just shows what a flawed model of government we have when we cannot trust Voters and States Rights to force people to Vote The Right Way.

The one downside is the whole TikTok ban thing that got attached to it. I’m thankful that we’re (probably, after some Senate shenanigans) going to support our allies, and it makes me glad to hear how they are encouraged by that news, but that amendment is going to have some serious ramifications in the near future.

So maybe they’ll sell it to Mark Cuban or Mercedes Bezos. Or a consortium headed by Taylor Swift and Jay-Z. Keep hope alive. (If Musk or Zuckerberg puts in a bid, the FTC can scream “monopoly!!” and refuse them permission.)

China may not permit the sale because they don’t want the underlying algorithm to go to another country.
There is also a chance that the demand that it be sold is unconstitutional anyway.

re: #122 retired cynic

You need to start 2 syllables ahead. See the second version here (starts around 0.55) after the proper version.

I’ll have to pick up some popcorn, too. Trump’s gonna be fartin’ up a hurricane tomorrow, LOL.

I had a dream last night about having a newborn baby, and calculating that by the time the baby turned 18, I would be 79 years old.

By the time Robert De Niro’s youngest turns 18, he’ll be 98.

An abortion rights group, Coloradans for Reproductive Freedom, appears to have been more successful in its signature collection efforts. It hopes to put a constitutional amendment enshrining the right to an abortion on the ballot and submitted 230,000 signatures to the secretary of state’s office on Thursday. The group’s signatures must now be validated by the secretary of state.

In the words of Han Solo, “Well, that’s the tricky part, isn’t it?”

It’s funny because it’s an ugly kludge for a part was absolutely prime for an interference fit. Just make the pedal plate with a minuscule amount of allowable flex at the bottom edges and a couple of tiny indents on the bottom sides that dig into divots in the pedal body, then slide them together until they snap in place.

Not exactly.

Burgess Meredith was born Nov. 16, 1907, and was 52 when the “Time Enough At Last” episode aired (11/1959). He died in 1997, aged 89.

Maybe not so tricky: Colorado’s SoS, Jena Griswold seems to be a good Democrat, so the likelihood of her office trying to slow-walk or scuttle an abortion-rights amendment seems fairly low.

We’ve had ‘personhood’ on the CO ballot several times already and managed to vote to down. But they keep hoping if they get the language juuuust right it will sneak through. I see they’re going for the graphic horror appeal for the signature collection, though I’m sure the usual deliberate obfuscation is planned for the final ballot language.

You need to start 2 syllables ahead. See the second version here (starts around 0.55) after the proper version.

They did a different version, one syllable off. Amazing you found this.

Maybe but there are also 5 jurors who are either lawyers or have family members who are lawyers. They might be able to keep the jury from running away. They might also be able to tell a judge that a juror lied to get on the jury and get an alternate to replace.

(Ianal) you have to negotiate in the jury room in good faith. You can’t just sit there with your arms folded and say not gonna convict no matter what no way no how.

You have to be reasonably intelligent to pull that off without tipping your hand to your real motive
