PBS Space Time: Interstellar Expansion WITHOUT Faster Than Light Travel

Science • Views: 14,136

In the far future we may have advanced propulsion technologies like matter-antimatter engines and compact fusion drives that allow humans to travel to other stars on timescales shorter than their own lives. But what if those technologies never materialize? Are we imprisoned by the vastness of space—doomed to remain in the solar system of our origin? Perhaps not. A possible path to a contemporary cosmic dream may just be to build a ship which can support human life for several generations; a so-called generation ship.

We just need to extend the timescales of the human life. A 200 year journey may not be so bad if our lifespan was indefinite.

“…Non-Stop is a 1958 science fiction novel by British writer Brian Aldiss. It is about problems that the inhabitants of a huge generation space ship face after an alien amino acid that they picked up on another planet triggers a pandemic. Law and order began to collapse, and knowledge of the ship and of its purpose was eventually almost entirely lost throughout the vessel.”

Yes, Biden is famously vowing to purge anyone from serving the country if they don’t agree to election lies and his party in general. He also fired the prosecutor who is charging his son. Tulsi, as usual, is just spot on.

Gabbard’s absurd take on Trump:

“…Gabbard went on to lavish praise on the former president, which was well received in the room. “I’ve had the chance to meet with him and speak with him at length, and I’ve seen firsthand his heartfelt interactions with friends of mine, veterans, and I’ve seen how he has touched their hearts and moved them to tears as he expressed his appreciation for their service and their sacrifice. No cameras, no crowds. Just that heartfelt conveyance of appreciation.”

She added: “I’ve gotten a sense for what motivates him and it’s got nothing to do with what the Washington establishment is accusing him of. This is a man who’s a fighter, his strength and resilience can only come from one place. His ability to endure this much can only come from one place, a sincere love and concern for the future of our country and his care for the American people.

Yeah, there’s no way she actually saw him act that way. I think the fact that over 40 former cabinet/administration members (including his own VP) refuse to back his return to power says volumes about what he’s “really like” behind closed doors.

Our (US) air and water are cleaner now then when our population was 1/3 of what it is now.
As economics make solar and nuclear cheaper than fossil fuels, developing economies will clean up their act. This is a phase. Earth can support many times the current population, though our population is unlikely to double from where it is today. Much of the western world has a stagnant or shrinking population if immigration is excluded.

Just before Ms. Cyborgs grandmother passed in early 2009, she wrote her then 2 1/2 year nephew a letter and gave it to us for safekeeping because the letter was not to be given to him intil he turned 18.

This week is his 18th birthday. We gave him the letter yesterday:

Most nonvoting young people aren’t people in college with foreign policy opinions.

The data also provide a profile of voting-eligible nonvoters. Four-in-ten Americans who were eligible to vote did not do so in 2016. There are striking demographic differences between voters and nonvoters, and significant political differences as well. Compared with validated voters, nonvoters were more likely to be younger, less educated, less affluent and nonwhite. And nonvoters were much more Democratic.

I’m not going to venture a complete “why” but I very much doubt it has to do with what happens on social media discourse, particularly since those demographic trends read to me like (1) successful vote suppression, (2) inertia from despair, (3) being unaware of how to access the system, than they do “people saying mean things about Biden on the Bluetweetodon.” It’s a kind of elite delusion that online discourse is a measure of “the people” when it’s a non-representative sample with the volume of opinions tweaked by algorithms that promote statements that will drive argument and frustration. It doesn’t become smart to base your assessment of people on what is dragged across one feed just because one is a liberal.

So…this is not persuading actual nonvoters, this is shaming statistically-likely voters, and some of these demographic markers on nonvoting are probably indicative not of personal failing but of how our democracy has always tilted the scales against certain types of people voting.

But this isn’t actually a rhetoric to compel young people to vote by crook, it’s a preemptive explanation for failure without even engaging with the reality of who doesn’t vote. It’s damage control, internal management rhetoric presented as an “argument” where the material issue is just a medium—people turned to pulp with high explosive for smaller and more opaque strategic gains—through which to convey the central point: fuck them kids, they’re the ones responsible when democracy doesn’t produce our desired outcomes, please don’t calculate who actually has power, money, and access.

This is especially troubling because it’s also reflects a failure to understand discourse even as they’re using discourse as a measuring stick. Social media is coarse, hyperbolic, and as a medium encourages immediate reaction…people are going to be ugly and say drastic things on social media because of a bunch of MacLuhanist aspects to how it’s designed. Add to this that it is by-design intended to elicit strong reactions because fear and anger create greater engagement, and this is simply not a medium to use as part of reality-testing.

If you’re an institution constantly in a moral panic about the dirtbags talking shit in a medium where you literally have no ability to gauge who is a person, or whether that person is speaking in good faith, or if their good faith is a momentary eruption of emotion and not a consistent mindset…you are burning time and energy best spent otherwise on an ineffectual moralism that produces no positive results.

If you’re an individual distressed by the contents of social media…do not under any circumstances assume that social media is a valid representation of anything, it is full of inauthentic behavior, literal propaganda, and also people using pseudonymity to express themselves in ways that are shocking. This is not a good reality test, especially since we literally know that people running these apps range from an actual fascist to merely a dead-eyed cynic willing to do anything for more ad revenue.

If you’re traveling abroad this summer, it’s important to know the famous rhyme won’t get you far internationally. In places like Mexico, Central America and South America there are coral snakes that actually have red stripes touching white rings and even coral snakes with red rings touching black rings.

Those snakes will still be venomous to you despite what the rhyme says, so it’s best to know what kinds of venomous snakes live in your area.

re: #16 JC1

I don’t think that we have an overpopulation problem; not even close.

One of the scariest things in modern discourse is the failure to acknowledge the gulf between overpopulation and overconsumption.

Most of crises are ones of overconsumption: most of the pollution and most of the emissions are the product of industrial activities that serve a very small segment of the total global population. To over-produce for developing worlds markets the world has to generate a lot of emissions and a lot of trash; as “development” involves the adoption of consumerism powered by overproduction, the problem compounds when more and more people want to live a lifestyle in which the measure of success is functionally the ability to waste.

The worst emissions are a tiny slice of a tiny slice—really big companies, mostly in the petrochemical sector—who could theoretically limit their externalities but have no incentive to because there’s just too much money to make from fast and dirty production. Industry purposefully lobbies for the law to reflect a devaluation of commonwealth—the air, the water, the environment—to effectively zero because it socializes something that could be a loss, were authority were to put a value on long-term quality of life for people.

This is apparently also happening in the Conroe school district, which is northeast of Houston. It would not surprise me to learn that the Klein district (where I graduated from) and the Spring district (next to Klein and both next to Cy-Fair) were doing the same thing.

But this is NOT a new thing in Texas. When I was a teenager in the 1970s, these two people, Mel and Norma Gabler, were basically in charge of textbook selection in Texas.

en.wikipedia.org

In the ’80s, I worked at a college bookstore that sold the books for accredited at-home high school that was run as a UT Austin extension. (I don’t remember the requirements, but not just anyone could do at-home high school.) Anyway, some of the books we bought (FROM THE PUBLISHERS) had stamps in them indicating that they’d been approved by the Texas Board of Education. The high school economics book’s stamp specifically said that the book taught capitalist and free market principles.

So yeah, this is not a new thing at all. Still disgusting, still annoying. I really doubt they’d let us read “The Crucible” today.

Operation: Kalua Pig - The wrap up

Wins:
I got bone in: I have big ass bone for future stock
I got a local Kiawe liquid smoke, probably reduce to 3 tbls from 5 next time: strong!
I made Kalua Pig with cabbage/onion, then I have two bags of shredded meat in freezer
I have some strong rendered ju with separated fat for flavoring in future
used taro and ti leaves adding authentic flavor
Tasty!

L’s/changes:
I got to temp of 203 on one side and 190 on the other: I need to hold it longer to get super tender
Probably can reduce salt about 25% or more
Will wrap tight in foil next time: didn’t use foil inside my dutch oven
Will go at lower heat for longer: 325 instead of 350, or go to 325 after an hour

All in all, good to practice as we are going to do this for TGiving. I’ll probably do it a day before then process the meat/ju/fat/veggies

My high school biology teacher basically said that we weren’t going to talk about it, let’s move to the next chapter.

ETA: This was also an easy way to avoid discussing the Civil War in college. Every.Single.Textbook we sold in the 1980s was a two-part set because it was a two semester course series. Part 1 ended in 1865, Part 2, started with 1866 and Reconstruction. Basically, the run up to the Civil War got covered, but not the Civil War itself.

Good to see you!! What about Dan Osborn? He was sending me requests for money(just like several dozen others throughout the country, many of whom I never heard of). So he’s not in the race for Senate? I tend to be reluctant to contribute to primary out-of-state candidates since I think that residents in the state should decide which Democrat is best for them.

Dan Osborn is running as an independent in the Senate race for Deb Fischer’s seat.

He was seeking a Nebraska Democratic Party endorsement, but has now rejected the idea. He says he’s not going to “suck up” or “schmooz” to any party.

nebraskaexaminer.com

Kerry Eddy also ran in the Legal Marijuana Now Primary, beating her opponent 679-309. She said she ran to support Osborn. In the run-up she said she would drop out after the primary, drawing the ire of LMN Party faithful. Her opponent said he would seek the nomination to replace her if she does it.

Osborn did not have to run in a primary as an independent candidate. He has about 1/20th the money on hand that Sen. Deb Fischer does.

You actually don’t want to be near the ground when your helicopter has a problem, because you need to fall quite some distance before enough excess energy is stored in the spinning blades that you can yank up on the collective at the last second and translate that stored energy into lift to pad your landing. Basically if you’re below 500 ft you’re fucked.

Yeah, the guy who called us “suckers and losers” were moved to tears (she even talks like him). The guy who insulted a new Gold Star Mother when her son was killed in Chad. The guy who didn’t attend the 100th anniversary memorial service of WW1 because it was raining.

Yep, a musician with a phd in astrophysics, Anton is a teacher with a masters in education. He is a great science communicator, but he is still not an astronomer.

Coincidentally, I was looking for something to watch and found Queen in Montreal video on Disney from their concert there in 1981. I’ve seen their LiveAid performance, which was one for the ages, but this shows the band at the height of their power. May is one hell of a guitarist and Freddy, well, he’s Freddy and all that implies.

Walking the boys this morning and I was wearing a tie dye SF giants hoodie because fog…and half way through the walk the damn sun pokes through and suddenly I’m all hot and shit…but I didn’t come here to complain…

After some well deserved beach play because they’re good boys, we were walking back home along the bike path and I see a couple of young women with a toddler (barely walking) and he’s pointing at us…I assume he means the dogs so I shorten their leashes in case he decides to grope at them…but he doesn’t.

As we pass he sings, “Let’s go Giants!” And I sing it back and he looks at his mom in amazement. She says, yes, he knows that song too!

Good fucking vibes on the trail.

Rfkjr claims his voting address is 84 Croton Lake Road In Katonah NY, though he is not the owner of the million-dollar property-in-arrears, does not show up in resident searches for it, and some longtime neighbors — and even local authorities — were shocked at the notion it’s his home.

Brian Glenn, the boyfriend of a certain “bleach-blonde” U.S. representative, shocked devotees of the MAGA YouTube channel Right Side Broadcasting Network (RSBN) on Saturday as he declared his sudden departure from the outlet.

The announcement came at the beginning of RSBN’s coverage of the NRA Convention, where the network had dutifully followed its idol Donald Trump to his planned speech. Glenn opened his broadcast with the news.

Did he leave…or was he fired…Inquiring minds want to know!

Rubio refused to commit to accepting the results of the 2024 presidential election and repeated conspiracy theories about the 2020 election

He deflected follow-up questions by falsely claiming that Hillary Clinton had denied her loss in 2016.

Marco is spineless.
Here’s how you do it:

I trust the system. It’s how I got elected. No matter what any other dem or rep did or does or thinks. I trust the poll workers and the tabulators. This is the United States and we have a good system overall.
