I’m not proud to see this at the top of the “top-rated links,” because, frankly, I don’t care the slightest bit if Obama’s 89-year-old grandmother is Christian or Muslim. I did check around the internet, and this story has been reported by several independent and reputable-enough sources, so it would seem that she did indeed declare herself a Christian last year, and a Muslim this year. Did she lie the first time? Did she lie the second time? Did she change her mind in between? Who cares?

The only thing about the “Obama’s religion” issue that has ever concerned me is the fact that he himself lied during his campaign, and continues to lie, about the fact that he was raised as a Muslim boy, before he decided to became a Christian. I don’t know why he feels the need to lie about that. I don’t think it matters in what religion someone was raised as a child, before he grew up and chose another one for himself. But it does bother me somewhat that our president feels insecure enough about the issue that he feels compelled to lie about it.

In any case, please, for goodness’ sake people, let’s not let start repeating the “Barack Obama is secretly a Muslim” silliness. I’m not implying that anyone has, I just don’t want us to start.

I wasn’t talking about Obama’s religion but rather about his grandmother’s and the fact that she called the reports about her being a Muslim, “untruths”.

No doubt, either she was lying then, or she’s lying now, or she converted in the interim, which she’s perfectly free to do if she wants.

I guess I’m just saying the only reason I feel this could be remotely interesting is if it shed any light on Barack himself. And I don’t think it does. This grandmother is the second wife of Barack’s grandfather, not his biological grandmother, so I don’t think it says anything about his upbringing. And besides, I think it’s already established that Barack (1) was raised as a Muslim during his early childhood, (2) consistently lied by denying this during his campaign (I don’t know why he needed to lie — I think it’s perfectly fine that he used to be a Muslim a long time ago), and (3) has considered himself a Christian for a long time now, as evidenced by his conspicuously advertised membership in the Trinity United Church of Christ.
