The death of Harry Patch leaves no known British survivors of those who fought in the trenches of the First World War. He was the last of the infantry soldiers — the “Tommies”, immortalised by Kipling — who fought and died in hundreds of thousands on the Western Front, at Gallipoli, in Mesopotamia and Palestine during the “war to end all wars”, but which led inexorably to the conflict of 1939-45. ….’
